I’ve discovered my favorite genre of Bagginshield art is where Thorin is a lovesick idiot who is Losing It and Bilbo is unbothered or oblivious to Thorin’s suffering LMAO
#thorin oakenshield#bilbo baggins#bagginshield#if anyone has more please send it to me I have like four rn#I know I made a post a while back talking about how I wish there were more posts that focused on each of their lives outside of each other#and I still stand by that but I also can’t deny the fun in a Important Dwarf like Thorin turning into an idiot around Bilbo#tbh this works even platonically. this guy has friends bc he’s lucky not bc he’s actually friendly#so I can imagine becoming friends with Bilbo is like ‘fuck now I have to be nice bc he WILL actually leave. uh. oh god’#love men who are grouchy and offputting <3#and Bilbo is oblivious not as a flaw but bc he’s just not wired that way and he’s just accepting that Thorin is weird#bc he has no basis of which to assume he isn’t just Like That sometimes same way the dwarves don’t know shit abt hobbits#and it’s not as like. Bilbo being extremely innocent either he’s just not thinking about it LMAO#and Bilbo Also doesn’t have a ton of friends (different reasons but he IS also grouchy and petty) and he’s just ‘?? ok’#they’re both fucking stupid and everyone around them is dying and in anguish#I particularly enjoy when a character who is emotionally constipated and stoic and whatever just starts losing it#not even necessarily in a sappy or angsty way just. those emotions gotta come out eventually#so for a guy like Thorin who takes himself seriously and is very closed off emotionally it’s fun to just imagine that facade cracking#meanwhile Bilbo is just like ‘you ok??’#Bilbo himself has some emotional issues so it’s double the entertainment

So let's talk height.
(Image taken from gamibuzz.com)
So the average human height in our world is a little difficult to ascertain, but in 1996 was thought to be 5'7" for men, and 5'3" for women. Now, I don't think that the devs have coded in the gendered height difference to Veilguard, so let's just average that out to 5'5" and apply that to this image. (Very Scientific I know, I've not even accounted for the fact that human heights have increased over the last 200 years on average.) Assuming that all these characters are set to 50% in the character creator (very scientific) that means the human man here is 5'5". After doing a little screen measuring and maths, that means that the average height of a qunari is 6'2", elf average is 4'11", and dwarf average is 4'2". Obviously, these are averages, so there will be taller/shorter people. Also, I'm doing a lot of rounding and conversion because I hate the imperial system, so I may be a little off. What's the range of heights available in the character creator, though? Not sure, I'd need to be able to measure the difference. Expect a more accurate update when I get ahold of the character creator!
#dragon age#datv#dragon age the veilguard#unnecessary math#elves and dwarves worked out way shorter than I thought! although that's probably because of the average I decided to work from#if you were to work from the human male average 5'7“ they work out at 5'0.5” 6'4“ and 4'3.5”#why did i do this? I'm supposed to be working?#i would guess that ancient elves have a similar height average to humans but honestly who knows#only thing we know is that they are taller than modern elves#my 4'11“ lavellan craning her neck back to look at unnecessarily tall Solas#seriously I'm going to update this with higher accuracy once the game is finally downloaded onto my pc#and that's the last you'll ever hear from me

Bad and naughty LotRO players who try to walk into Mordor one week after the Legendary server opens get sent to Archet to think about what they've done
#lotro#in all seriousness they probably just sent me to my characters origin point in the world#this is where humans spawn in after the intro#hobbits would probably go to little delving#elves to celondim#dwarves to thorins hall#humans are the only ones who have to stare at coffins immediately upon entering the world#theres probably something there if i thought about it hard enough

something i'm really excited about re: veilguard is that all the stuff so far has been very very open about the evanuris and elgar'nan and ghilan'nain and their whole deal, which makes me think that there's going to be a bigger lore reveal/twist that they HAVEN'T shown us, which is to say TITANS TITANS TITANS TITANS FINDING OUT HOW THAT TITAN GOT BLIGHTED LACE HARDING WIELDING TITAN MAGIC TITANS TITANS TITANS
#how to fight evanuris: forget the orb. go to the source. make friends with the titans. lace harding messiah. who said that#dragon age spoilers#dragon age 4 spoilers#datv spoilers#da:tv spoilers#sort of ??? but to be safe!!!!!#seriously we KNOW from trespasser that the ancient elves did war on the dwarves#and that solas's orb probably came from a titan heart#and we know from descent that they are still PRESENT and so are the ancient dwarves who were tasked with protecting them#and we know from DAGNA that lyrium is living matter (TITAN BLOOD) and red lyrium is blighted#and that dwarves can still potentially tap into/connect their consciousness to the titans . which we also know from valta#all i'm saying. all i'm saying!#sandal valta and lace should have a group chat . dagna honorary member#geo rants

Would have been cool if they had gone with their original idea of Galerius becoming an evil centaur Unicorn while Alain becomes a Unicorn with his chosen maiden riding him.
I think this would have needed too many rewrites of the plot to go anywhere lol
But now I'm imagining maiden-Mordon riding Unicorn!Alain and I can't ignore it anymore
From what I could understand (and what I put through the GT lens, this artbook has so many stuff I want to understand lol idk where to start!) some ideas from the beta version was about having an unit called "unicorn knight" - whose model was later re-used to make Virginia/Ilenia and Alain - but idk if the main lead - they designed the "prince" unit, that was re-used for Gilbert! - was able to turn in an unicorn, like proto-alain, or if it was from another scrapped draft thing.
They also had ideas about adding monsters on the fields, but dropped it so the only "remains" from this idea are the bones from Drakengard and Baltro's ominous lines.
TBH... I don't know if I would have appreciated this "monster" inclusion given how Fodlan completely botchered it (but then UO seems to have been designed with more care than Fe Fodlan so...) but if they went through the "and Baltro resurrects long dead/forgotten monsters to fight against the party!" it'd have been to reminiscent of a FE game where a Gharnef like resurrects "dragons" to fight/use against the party lol
Galerius' evil centaur thing, like him having a second transformation/phase would have been neat, and yet, I still think painting him as a "red emperor" was, despite the ties to FE, really nice, in the sense that Galerius is Alain's foil and would be a "him" that didn't bother to read to the plot, thus gets fucked by it at the end (Baltro doing Baltro things once again, since it was his idea in the first place to kill an unicorn!).
But then, I suppose if centaur!Galerius and unicorn!Alain were kept in the final product, VW would have found a way to write them in an acceptable plot so, who knows?
#zeroabyss#unicorn overlord stuff#I'm glad they dropped the 3D models/renders for the units on the map grid/map when you pick them to give them directions#they aren't horrible but I really prefer the 2D ones#I always knew something was odd with Galerius' pony#maybe it was a leftover from the centaur thing#like his horse is 3 meters tall what the eff is this#is it some kind of special Zenoira breed of horses? it dwarves ours#now important question#was the horse also incarnated using Ilenia as a medium or was it a real horse?#after the pokemon leaks I can't read the 'Alain turns in an unicorn' things seriously#the rapidash one was... well I want to forget it lol

diggy diggy hole was written by a human, is generally hated by dwarves, and becomes an absolute smash hit among gnomes. a disgruntled dwarf bard, in turn, writes a song about how gnomes have thirty-seven names and silly hats; this also becomes an instant smash hit among gnomes
#'why are you so mad anyway! it's a banger and it's almost entirely complimentary!' 'it's taking the piss >:(' 'yes?? so???'#it is unfair and untrue to say that dwarves have no sense of humor but they DO have a great deal of personal and cultural pride#I mean so do gnomes but for dwarves it tends to manifest as Taking Themselves Seriously#anyway this post brought to you by how many times in the last week I've listened to diggy diggy hole for ???? reasons#aside from that it's a banger#silliness#gnome stuff#worldbuilding

Is anyone else obsessed with poetic compliments?
Like… not just calling someone pretty but…
“His hair was like snow and his skin like frost. He looked like a creature made of porcelain moonlight with eyes like glistening stars. Words could not describe how ethereal he looked when basking in the moon’s gentle glow,” she spoke softly.
“And I remember him that way. A man made of stardust, a man who looked to be the very moon itself...”
“I find him in the moon because that was always what he was to me. The moon, soft and gentle. He was brighter than anyone else, as if he belonged in the heavens not on earth as a man, but in the sky as a celestial body.”
“He is the moon in the sense that his pure and beautiful…”
She swallowed thickly, voice soft and tender as she spoke again. “And he is the moon in the sense that he is far out of my reach,” she whispered, a single tear falling from her eye.
And not just saying you like someone’s strength or that you think they’re handsome but…
“You say that as if you don’t look like a fallen star.”
“What do you mean by that?”
She smiled softly, kissing the tip of his perfect nose as her hands moved down his neck then to his shoulders.
“Dark,” she whispered, kissing his jaw, “perfect,” she kissed his neck, “and pure,” she kissed his throat softly.
“It’s as if the sky fell onto earth,” she whispered, her lips ghosting along his throat as her hands skipped over his wounded chest and gently moved against his stomach.
“A man made of steel and rock, my own meteor,” she breathed against him, kissing his collarbone.
“My own piece of heaven.”
Cause shit like that just makes me 🫧🫧🫧🫧🫧 frreeal

Your family have something precious.
Someone comes and kills your family and steals your family’s precious thing.
You try to get it back but you can’t they are too powerful
Then someone else comes and beats the bad guy and takes the precious thing.
But they will not give it back to you.
Their argument is they did all the hard work. They risked their lives. They lost their friends and family to fight Evil while you tried but failed.
Surely they deserve a little piece of rewards?
Also, they said you do not own that precious thing to begin with. That thing is too good and must be shared with everyone for maximum benefit.
But you grew up with that precious thing in your home and lost your family over that thing and you want to keep it. You dead family will want to have it back.
Of course your family did not make that thing out of air. But your family were the ones to reshape it on so something fascinating, something precious.
You want your family’s precious thing back, and those heroes of the stories ignore your pleads.
Your probably think this is about Silmarils.
But this is also how a lot of Sindar elves think about their lost lands.
—————
Imagine you are a Sindar elf that goes back to where your hometown was after the Long Piece started.
Noldor has built a new city in their own style over the ruin of your home
And they welcome you to stay offering citizenship like they are the owner of the land
They imposed new laws, that are different with laws of you people, and they called their laws advanced and right
If you don’t like the laws, you have the “freedom” to leave. They built this place, after all.
You look at that hill over there. You know the name of that hill. Your father brought you there on your begetting days and planted trees.
Your father was abducted by orcs when the Constrainer came from the west. You don’t know if he is alive or not and you don’t know which is the kinder fate.
Now the trees are gone and there are Noldor houses over the hill, and they gave the hill a new name you do not like.
You want to ask if the trees were burnt in the war, or cut down to make places for the house. You kept your questions to yourself.
They came to fight the dark enemy and they brought back your lost homeland. They do not deserve that hostility.
So you live at their city, learn their language, follow their laws, and in your head you call that hill by its old name.
Then one day the words reached you, and you lost it, you went to your Noldor neighbors to ask is that true is that true you came on ships stained by blood of my own people across the sea
They did not look at your eyes, and you know the rumor is true.
But they had no problem looking at your eyes before. They only show guilt after you find out their crimes
You followed their laws.
But what laws did they follow killing your family to steal their ships?
Had circumstances been difficult, would they kill you to steal your land?
But you will not know. You will not afford to find out.
#tolkien#silmarillion#the silmarillion#silm#silmarillion headcanon#silm headcanon#I know this take is probably ooc#but yeah Thingol’s Quenya ban was widely effective#people followed voluntarily and Noldor had to learn Sindarin and translate their names#that’s very impressive#there must be some reason#silmaril#sindar#of course Sindar elves are not wholly innocent#they did fuck up petty dwarves and never mentioned it#like Turin grew up in Doriath but he did not know that#definitely not in their textbook that they committed genocide#but yeah I seriously think Eol’s opinion was a common one among those who did not live in Doriath in the beginning#became war refugee and when you came back to your homeland it was already occupied#if you were lucky it would be Turgon and he was at least nice#Nevrast seemed to have many Sinder elves#and they liked Turgon enough to follow him to Gondolin#if you were unlucky you get Celegorm and Curufin#kinslayer#not apologetic#will abduct your princess and try to force her into marriage#good luck for that

Okay so maybe, possibly, perhaps, I may have done too much worldbuilding and lore for this whole thing
Like, too much too much
Like, what was the story about again? Kind of much
Like, this protagonist is too small for this kind of story too much
Like, the last few thousands years lore and wars and evolution kind of too much
Like, hey, maybe I should make this a little smaller and focus on the story kind of too much
Yeah I gotta focus on the future more than the past of this world
#seriously#I have angels and demons pacts#I have sirens and vampire creation#dwarves and elves in many tribes#fauns and their wars#mermaids and their frankly small history#(you will get this later)#orcs and the radium against them#humans and magic origin#I think I should backpedal a bit#I think I should think through the present more#and decided on a path for the future#high guardian herbs#high guardian spice#high guardian spice reboot

Idk how to put this and also I only know things about this game second hand so far, but as someone who had bg3 pitched to me as "if you love old dragon age you'll love this!" I do find it kind of disappointing that the game seems to be just 1-to-1 replicating dnd world building.
#Origins was at least kinda /trying/ to subvert dnd & classic fantasy tropes. yk.#like a little? especially with what they were doing with having the high elves be really past tense.#and some of the things they tried with the dwarves before they started ignoring them#idk. as someone who never had the life experiences necessary to develop an attachment to dnd a lot of the things im hearing about bg3#are just. boring.#and in some ways the comparisons aren't quite giving old da the credit it deserves.#also its past my bedtime so dont take this too seriously <3

Having a single moment of realization that the common denominator for literally ALL your characters (not only the MAIN ones who are just... queer and have a visceral need to be useful and therefore surely also liked) is that they all struggle to figure out who exactly they are after some non-canon event made them realize that what they previously thought to be their identity was merely a restrictive illusion imposed upon them from an outside source... really hits different a few minutes before midnight.
Like at this point I'm unsure if that's just a common narrative theme for any character, or if I should go back to therapy asap.
#personal#seriously. Arvid is no longer just a priest or soldier.#which kind of fucks him up because he never THOUGHT he could be anything else#Iona is struggling with her whole life getting upended.#Ray is fundamentally shaken in all his beliefs.#Leena is widowed; she struggles with that- Harwen is dealing with a massive culture shock and how he doesn't really feel dalish anymore#Adela is literally the best adjusted and she was actually just a straight-up criminal#and the only one of these that was written FOR me was Arie no longer being in Orzammar or a princess#and needing to figure THAT out for herself somehow#they didn't technically NEED to need therapy#yet here we are#nobody MADE me do any of this#(side note I want to either draw or commission like... a dwarf gang and an elf gang)#(Arie Arvid and Vogar for the dwarves)#(and Leena Harwen and Iona for the elves)

i cannot emphasize enough how much roland and lacklon mean to me
ofc i expect queer characters in da, but in film and tv etc, i'm so used to queercoding or accidental tension. this applies across the board, but it's being fulfilled more often as time goes on. so infrequently with mlm relationships.
i wasn't surprised when miriam and hira kissed - it was a pleasant affirmation that the series wasn't chickening out or being pressured out of rep for purposes of the show. and we've had a handful of canon wlw relationships in da, of varying visibility and relevance. celene and briala (ech), vaea and charter, sera and dagna (conditionally/in the bw canon timeline), branka and hespith, maybe others, that's just what's been in the media i've consumed.
mlm-wise, with named characters, there's dorian and bull (conditionally), karl and anders, and zevran and taliesin (and rinna).
out of these, branka and hespith, karl and anders, zevran and taliesin are are completely off-screen, all being in the past, and the latter two are conditionally revealed to the player.
anyway i fully expected roland and lacklon to just be awkward teasing through the end, one-sided and miscommunicated, maybe lacklon was actually straight, whatever. and they actually fucking kissed and . sdkghsdkgsdhf. jesus christ. jesus CHRIST
meaningful. i can't do analysis or anything here i'm forgetting how to type. your honor i love them they are so important
#also lacklon is one of three dwarves in romantic relationships w non-dwarves#the others being mae's husband and dagna#which is also significant considering gaider's distaste for the idea of them being seen as desirable#by which i mean *drumroll* his ableism#like seriously what a hill to die on#also no wade and herren aren't canon that's fan interpretation of the darkspawn chronicles#da absolution#absolution spoilers#roland#lacklon#rambles#da#meta
