I saw a discussion happening the other day and wanted to throw my two cents in. If you have livestock then you probably have feedbags aplenty. And some of our bags are made of pretty tough material that I was looking for a way to reuse. We never seem to have enough baskets for eggs around my house, so I started cutting feed bags into strips and weaving my own. These are zero waste projects made from bags with a woven core rope made out of even more bags. If they get dirty you can fully submerge them in hot soapy water and then just set them someplace to drip dry.
[These are very time intensive to make. Please realize that the cost reflects the number of actual hours spent cleaning and cutting materials and weaving them.]

There's a huge dirth of information on the internet for finger weaving. I could find some stuff, but there's one thing I'm trying to figure out. A chevron in the middle with a solid color down the side. I can make them both separate and then kinda sew them together, but how might I just do it all as one weave? I want it to be grey on the sides of the whole weave and then a chevron pattern of red, white, and green in the middle.

tips for branch weaving:
test the strength of a branch by lightly squeezing the "V" together. You want it to be firm, flex a little, but not snap with light force. Remember, you're going to be putting it under tension with the warp and it'll not be fun if it snaps immediately.
you can strip the bark if you want/are able to (though some bark will be easier to strip than others). Cutting the branch while it's green (on the tree) will make stripping it easier.
I cut the edges off and sand them for a neater look, but this is personal preference.
if you know how to crochet a chain, you can make the warp set-up a little prettier (see above pictures): crochet a chain in your desired warp (I use cotton/wool blend) to match the length of the shortest branch, slightly stretching out the chain to measure and leaving generous tails at both ends. Use that number of chains to make a second one. Secure both ends to the branch, leaving the chain facing inward. Take another piece of warp thread and loop through each chain with a darning needle. Secure loose ends at each end (I use fray stop glue to make sure no knots come undone). Now you have the loops of the crochet chain to thread the warp through!
I personally like warping through the back chain loop as it looks nicer to me (the top loops lay down on the branch better). Do what feels best to you.
can't crochet? No worries! Tie one end of the string around one branch of your "V" and start looping around the outside, keeping the distance between each loop as even as possible. Note that this may not work as well on stripped branches as the wood underneath is too smooth for the string to catch. Tie off at the end when you have the number of warp threads you want.

Finished this just in time for an 85°+ week ahead. At least the yarn is appropriately named “heatwaves” 😅. It soften up a bit when I wet finished it but I’m still going to machine wash and dry it to maybe get it softer. I should have my new 10-dent reed today or tomorrow so I can use my bamboo yarn and I’m so excited!

Kagome weave with dandelion stems - interplay of the fragile and the robust
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, yesterday I plucked some dandelion stems and wanted to tinker something with it. My first attempts with these fresh dandelion stems included different kinds of braids: The material is too fragile to handle such heavy twists. Hence I decided to try the kagome pattern, as the curving/bending/twisting of the kagome pattern is very light and does cause few stress on the material. Additionally, as I wove I realized again the advantage of this pattern: While it is also simple and elegant in its simplicity, it has practical aspects as well, as it gets its stability from the whole it forms. Each stem alone is not responsible for the stability of the woven piece.
But as network of entangled members supporting each other, the kagome weave stands out with its rather robust kind, despite being built up by rather fragile members.

My basket is done!!!!! She looks a little wonky but that's okay :)
I might make a lid for it
[Image ID: a picture of tightly rolled plastic wrapped with light brown yarn, forming a coil basket. Every inch or so the yarn is wrapped underneath the previous coil, anchoring it to itself to give it it's shape and hold it together. The basket is about the size of a ceramic bowl. End ID]

I made a stereographic projection by weaving paper strips!

Here's a Julia package for the computation of the shapes of the paper strips.

First Time Weaving
So I felt the siren call of the fiber arts and NEEDED a loom. Ended up making one out of wooden skewers shoved into the edges of a cardboard box. My shuttle is two wooden party forks taped together. My warps are loose, my selvedge is too tight and I keep missing stitches, but I'm weaving!!! It's so much fun too!! :D
