ok the thing about cas' final speech (love confession) to dean is that he said everything dean needed to hear. he told dean who he was - a man who did everything for love. he is not a blunt instrument, but a man with a beating, loving heart. Cas tells him: that is who you are.

Dean, who believes himself so worthless, was loving enough and brave enough and caring enough that he has changed an angel for good.

But dean can't process the meaning of what cas is saying, he can probably barely hear it, because all he can think about is how this sounds like a goodbye. all he can focus on is how he's losing cas, how he's losing a part of himself that can never be replaced.

and it makes it all so much more heartbreaking.

If nothing else, as a historian every time I get scared at the state of the world I have to remind myself that "uninteresting times" is a myth.

The world has always been in the throes of chaos and violence and fear, just in different ways and to different degrees. The anxieties of the past are no less real than our own, and we can learn from them. Normality and peace are fleeting, but we can always strive to increase those moments. We have to keep hoping and working for a better future. It's all we have. We may not succeed, but if we don't try, what are we living for?
