love that you ship sayosuki, but i’m curious. why sayosuki? i just mean that natsuri seems like the more popular ship even though (i think) that sayosuki is better

Oh boy, this is gonna be a long answer. I hope that’s alright

Sayosuki is by far my favorite DDLC ship (surprise!), one of my favorite ships ever and if I ever had a “comfort ship” it would be the one. I’ve had Sayosuki brainrot since I was obsessed with the game in 2018. Of course on the surface level there’s the “cute pink girls are cute together” angle and that they’re my favorite characters and those are certainly components but why  I love it so much runs deeper than that. To me, I think Sayori and Natsuki suffer the most over the course of the game. Not to say the other characters have presidential pardons from the pain train, but the story of the game highlights the innate tragedy present in both of these characters. Sayori believes herself to be undeserving of happiness or care from others while paradoxically craving those things and puts up a carefree mask to distract others from it. Natsuki goes through it during essentially the entirety of Act 2, as she gets neglected by her father, Monika, Yuri, the player character and from a meta perspective: the game at large. (Natsuki in Act 2 in general is so interesting and I may or may not have an Act 2 Sayosuki fic in the works). Ironically while these characters are at their lowest, it’s also when their most admirable traits are presented. Sayori’s self-hatred is contrasted with her genuine care and love for her friends. When Natsuki drops her abrasive mask, she’s actually a very kind and empathetic person (showcased in her cupcake date at the end of Act 1 and in her note about Yuri’s behavior in Act 2). I think these traits compliment each other well and I think they would bring out the best in each other.

I like to imagine a post-game scenario where these two broken girls who acknowledge and love these parts of each other and could support each other and help each other heal after all the shit they’ve gone through. Natsuki would admire the way Sayori makes everyone happy and I think she would try her best to make her happy as well. Sayori would provide a space for Natsuki where she would be accepted for her interests and would love to hear her talk about them. And maybe they could share some cookies along the way.

Not to mention how hyped I was for their sidestory when DDLC Plus was announced and how I was smiling and kicking my feet the whole time when I played it. I loved enthusiastic Sayori was to get closer to Natsuki (and she says she loves her ahhhhhh) and how they communicated at the end was so sweet.

I feel like there’s a lot more reasons why I love it so much but this response is already long enough as it is, I hope that satiated your curiosity anon :)

(These are well-founded things, so I’ll both try to explain myself, but also see if we have a good idea how long baked goods even last. If they WOULD last long enough to stay fresh for the next day, it could be tonight, we’ll go with that. If not, then it’d have to be the next day.)

(In the game, Sayori did bake eggs and toast for her breakfast. Perhaps Japanese schools are different? Or it’s a quirk of the game? Let’s also account for the fact this would be based off of how it was like in 2017.)

(By the way, I was referring specifically to the baked goods meant for the club itself, not the stands. Those we already established would indeed be in the afternoon, though likely that afternoon and not this one, if the club’s ones were first. We are not making stands in the morning! There really is not enough time for THAT! Just ”making” a batch of cookies that can be split across the club members. I don’t know THAT much on baking, but I do know a whole batch can be done at once, so you don’t have to bake separate times for every club member. And again, depending on how long baked cookies can stay fresh for, it might get to happen this afternoon after all. If only we had an actual baker among the two of us…)

(Not using that image for Monika’s bedroom does make sense too. In fact, while it was made in the DDLC reddit, it wasn’t posted by Dan Salvato, it’s made by one of the users on that subreddit for a mod they were making at the time. So actually… it’s NOT real! Reusing assets from other areas of the game does work fine anyway now that I think of it, though. This is supposed to be a video game, and Monika’s room has no art in the game. So any other houses just using the same generic background elements we could consider an actual part of the game’s logic. The game doesn’t even draw cookie sprites, after all. So if it doesn’t match something Monika has, it’s just the background not matching what’s in there, call it one of the game’s limitations. There doesn’t need to be much effort there, the player isn’t supposed to get a good look. Monika doesn’t have a route in the game after all.)

(One last thing. Flowey has some good ideas, and this definitely fits him in-character. Though I’ll likely have Monika explain that she really meant not to just go around the windows or go somewhere where it’s clear she’s staying at Monika’s. Thankfully, houses have things called walls. Also thankfully, Monika can send them both directly to Monika’s house. So long as Flowey doesn’t go around drawing attention to the fact he’s there like go around waving out the windows, it’ll be fine. But hey, who knows, maybe some of those makes it more likely nothing goes wrong and works as a backup, as Monika could likely convince people this other person that definitely isn’t Buttercup is definitely someone she’s known for a while! That shouldn’t need to happen, but… better to have a backup plan. But of course if he didn’t know about the conflict the game entities might have if they get conflicting ideas on who was in that house after Ivan comes back, since if Ivan was supposedly there the whole time, Flowey couldn’t have also been staying in the same house that Ivan was literally living at. Hence the idea that nobody should make that conclusion. Of course I’ll tip the scales in their favor too, but I’m not telling them. ;) Soon I’ll work on my in-character response. It’s clear we aren’t getting any askers in this last chance before they enter the actual gameplay world right now, so I might as well just have things progress. Plus, we did work out asks can still come in as long as neither Natsuki, Yuri, or any of those in-game entities that aren’t exactly characters are there to see it. You guys still have some time. And guys, don’t try to tell Monika about Flowey’s poem before it’s actual sharing time if you see it and she doesn’t. Or I’ll have to start blocking things from her like Nat does with Flowey.)

(…Okay, so I’m sure you aware I save these posts somewhere so I don’t lose it while I’m making them, right? This sometimes means I can look into things while I’m making this. So I tried looking into this, and yep, they could definitely last, they actually stay well for a couple days. Not sure exactly what the quality curve is, but yep, they can last. So yep, we can have them “bake“ this day and not the next morning. It shouldn’t be that noticeable in quality compared to the next morning, since they’d get served at clubtime, which is after school. (they would have cooled down by then anyway, so it’s just based on whether it’d be stale. And nope!))

(I remembered because Flowey isn't actually attending any classes- (Or maybe he can? But everything would likely go over his head, and he isn't registered as an actual school visitor.) -so he would be able to bake them while everyone else is at school if he isn't going until the club meeting starts. (If anyone realizes Flowey was living in the same house as Ivan, we could say Ivan was away visiting family or something for a bit. The house was rented out and Flowey's family took it for the little while he is staying.

OKAY so basically ddlc is this psychological horror that takes on the initial form of a high school dating game. You meet four different girls. Sayori, aloof, cooky (Your first friend, neighbour), Natsuki, sweet, cutesy (A really stand-offish girl), Yuri, deep, brooding (Bookworm who is introverted and depressed), and Monika, brains, beauty (A seemingly normal girl, smart, the club leader of the literature club).

You, as the only male in the club, write poems by choosing words when prompted. This will guide you towards the dating path of one of the girls, resulting in different dialogue, scenes, and prompts. There's also a school fair coming up that the group is preparing for. You notice that Sayori is getting awfully distant with you, and soon you find that she's depressed, in love with you. You have the choice to either turn the confession down (when she does eventually tell you) or accept it.

Either way she hangs herself. The game glitches out and restarts, from the very beginning, this time, Sayori seemingly having been deleted. You notice that Yuri is acting more obsessive towards you, and Natsuki less angry. The latter confides in you that Yuri is acting weird to you, but the game glitches and "Natsuki" tell you not to worry about it. Yuri then stabs herself three days before the school fair.

When Natsuki and Monika discover Yuri's body, Natsuki goes to throw up and Monika seems eerily calm abt it. Shocker she actually is altering the game code to force herself to be the only option for you to pick. She's aware she is a game, but loves you regardless. The only way to beat the game is to delete her file from the game coding. Then the game will restart without Monika.

Re-intro

Heya! We’re the Riptide system, a 15 y/o white-bodied polyfragmented DID system of over 100 alters! We’re introject, protector, and symptom holder heavy! We’ve known we’re a system for slightly under a year now, and a lot of things have changed during that time. We only speak English right now, but we want to learn Japanese, French, and Chinese in the future (I still hate french people BOO FRENCH PEOPLE /j)

We collectively go by Riptide or Rye, and they/them if referring to us plurally, he/they if singular! Our Singletsona ID is transmasc genderqueer + queer + aroacespec. Some of our current frequent fronters are Childe, Venti, Haven, Aether, Tal, and Rosaria.

We’re ND, severely mentally ill, and physically disabled. We’re autistic, schizophrenic, maladaptive daydreamers and have ADHD, OCD, Tourette's, NPD and BPD traits. We also have C-PTSD, major depressive disorder, social anxiety, generalized anxiety, acrophobia, and conduct disorder with limited prosocial emotions. We don’t know what’s wrong physically but are currently waiting for our next doctor’s appointment to start doing labs to try and figure it out.

We’re currently a freshman in highschool, and we’re taking our district’s math class below pre-calc, the name is all fucky but it might be the equivalent of algebra 2 or algebra 3-4 + statistics and geometry, theatre design, art I, graphic design I, and just basic classes otherwise (English, physics, social studies). Our favorite class so far is math & theatre design.

We’re all atheists, agnostic, or pagan. Some of our fictives also believe in source religion, and there may be a few other exceptions. Many of us dislike Christianity due to what I believe to be obvious reasons, and also the fact we’ve had religion focused OCD around Christianity despite not believing the religion. We don’t dislike most Christians, we just have some inherent distrust! Talk about organized religion in general makes us uncomfortable, so please avoid it where possible.

Our political beliefs are all leftist (with shitty exceptions like Luna), but some of us are in different branches of that and most of us are just anti-capitalist. I think Venti, the most political of us, considers vespself a communist, but ly never seems to have the time to research where hy is within that.

Our common introject sources are Genshin Impact (we have almost the full cast I think), MCYT, and our original characters! We also have introjects from various other media and places, such as the introjects of our friends, MHA, and PJO. We also have some song introjects!

the laptop shakes a bit as sean drops into the shot, with a mug and a tired grin. “hey guys…” his hair is a tousled mess and you can see the glint of the screen in the flash of his brown-green eyes as he trails off, eyes drifting from the camera to the corner of the screen.

“say hello to mackenzie and pals…” he reads, waving a little. “hello!” he scans the live chat for a minute, settling back in his chair.

“it is i, your anxious boy, who plays an even more anxious boy. here to pester you all and waste your time for the approximation of an hour.” he threw up his hands with a crooked little grin, he read for a little bit longer. “how are you?” he paused to consider the question, “i’m alright i guess, as usual, here i am at —fuck, it’s four am. when did it get so late?”

he sighed, mostly at himself before grinning at the camera. “one day i’ll learn.” in the shot behind him the light flickered on in the kitchen, his best friend ambling in and digging through the fridge, sean turning around to look. “hey j.”

his friend turned from where he was pouring a glass of juice, squinting at him in surprise. “farley?” his voice was rough with sleep as he padded over. “thought you were sleeping, the hell are you doing?”

“livestream,” sean answered with a laugh. “couldn’t sleep so i figured i’d talk to the internet. wanna join? s’cool if you’re going back to sleep.”

“nah i’m…” jamie paused to yawn. “awake. lemme grab a blanket and pull a chair over.”

“‘kay.” sean turned back to his laptop and the consistently running stream of chat comments, snorting at the insane amount of comments that were simply farmie in some form or jasean, that or an artful keysmash. he scrolled for a while, alternating between answering questions and drinking his mug of tea.

jamie settled in beside him, blanket around his shoulders as he leant forward to squint at the still running chat box. “hello people of the internet somehow awake at the same godforsaken time as my bro.” he greeted the camera with a yawn. “what are we talking about?”

“currently… gaming.” sean said, sneaking a cookie from the tin sitting on his brother’s lap. “you know about that.”

“i do.” jamie said, tugging his cookies out of sean’s grip with a half-sincere glare.  “what game are we talking about?”

“doki doki literature club. you know anything about that?”

“you dork, stop acting like we haven’t already beat it.” he bumped his shoulder against sean’s, making the other snicker in delight before he turned back to the camera. “and you lot can stop acting like it’s harmless now, we know all of DDLC’s secrets.”

“don’t expose me.”

“sorry, it’s my job.” jamie leaned against him to read again, both watching the influx of excited comments streaming past them so quickly that they can hardly read. they do love messing with the fans.

“your job is acting.”

“i’m allowed to have more than one.”

they pick up one comment, asking about the line of ink curling up the column of sean’s neck. “this one?” he traced it with his finger, “ha yeah this is from my latest tattoo. i’ll probably show you guys at some point.”

“sean’s almost as tattooed as finn, honestly.” jamie chirped. “he loves his ink.”

“i do, though you’re not any better really. i’m thinking i might get one on the back of my hand this time next time around.”

“yeah?”

“yeah, i don’t know though, that could change by the time i actually get it. anyway…” they returned to reading the comments, sean spotting one about his nails.

“oh, these? i painted them yesterday! i was marathoning criminal minds and figured it was something to keep my hands busy.” he waved his fingers at the camera and then in jamie’s face with a cackle as his brother grimaced. his nails were cut low and neat painted in wine red. “like them?” he said with a grin as the comments screamed about how cute he was.  

“i was there while you painted them, the hell do you mean?”

“so is that a yes?”

“… yes.”

“he’s just jealous because his nails aren’t that pretty.” a new voice said, causing both men to jump. lucia waddled out of the shadows, blanket wrapped as she toddled over. “hi.” she waved at the camera as the comments once again exploded, all of them some version or another of lucia!!! my queen or something else. “why are we up at the ass crack of dawn?”

“blame farley.” jamie grumbled. “he decided that it was a good idea to livestream at 4 in the morning.”

“we are not blaming farley. no one is forcing you to sit,” sean said back unable to stop himself from pouting. “i even said it was fine if you went to bed.”

“yeah but—” he frowned as though trying to think of some way to put something into words. sean jostled him with a gentle nudge.

“you worry too much,” sean said with a hint of exasperation, not meeting his friend’s eyes. the words had a curl on them like it was an old argument, one that they’d had several times and had yet to resolved, if it was ever going to but before it could continue and in front of a live audience, none the less, the other redhead in their group wiggled her way in between them with an over-loud yawn.

“really?” she said, tossing her blanket over herself and sean. “i think he worries too little.”

sean cracked a tiny grin at that, “that too.”

“i spend my time worrying about stuff that matters s’all.” jamie said, ever easygoing.

at that, the light expression dropped from his friend’s face to be replaced by something more frustrated. sean looked like he wanted to argue more (and he did), but lucia spoke up instead again, replying to some comment on the stream that sean had admittedly forgotten about,

“me?” she snorted. “oh i just woke up, came outside to get a drink of water and found these two heathens sitting in front of the computer and figured i’d join them.”

like always around her, the bits of tension between the brothers dissolved and for a while, that’s how they sat...occasionally answering questions and talking to each other. it was a syrupy sleepy kind of getting along that settled the quiet anxieties that had kept sean awake and as the morning dawned, the stream came to an end with the three of them snoozing quietly against each other, sean’s laptop finally running out of battery as the screen went black.

Doki Doki! Literature Club AU

Summary :

All the corrupt! versions (C!Dings, C!Chara, C!Frisk, C!Aster) somehow ends up in the same void and Corrupt!Chara take it upon them to make up a world for them to settle without stressing them out and lessen the corruption.

Until they realized they are in a dating sim game and the protag is here to ruin everything

Details :

Okay not intentionally ruin everything but still

All the corrupted characters always goes up and fight each other whenever the corruption rises and things are awful

C!Chara noticed that the corruption tied strongly to their emotion so C!Chara sets em up to another game/world setting where they can..technically lived normally without dealing the stress and isolation in the Void. The game they picked up is apparently a dating sims game.

C!Chara puts em up in where the girls would be : Aster as Yuri, Dings as Sayori, Frisk as Natsuki, and Chara themself as Monika, where they can took control as the admin of the world

Dings is Sayori so the protagonist’s childhood friend, and practically the one that keeps everyone in check.. in a way. Dings keeps Frisk in check by.. probably fighting / arguing with them a lot? It keeps Frisk from getting their violent tendencies to the other or sth like that? And he make sure Aster takes good care of himself and stuff. Dings and Chara is generally good pal so yeah?

Aster is Yuri so he acts like.. well regular nice and calm Aster~

Frisk is Natsuki except they are 2x more likely to fight you because they can.. probably not bring cookie but idk?.. tbh Frisk would just waves those ilegal manga like hey bro bro ya wanna read some manga i got them good ones and its totally allowed in clubroom join us

Chara is Monika but still a pretty chill dude? Monika has somekind of strict aura coz she’s the president but Chara more like ehh ok you can join the club, or not, please don’t.

The Protagonist of course would enter the world at some point and it throw a wrench on the whole “safe and normal” settings chara has been trying to keep. Because, being a dating sim, the protag would definitely go for romance and love... and none of the characters are ready for that kind of emotion yet lol

So first part of the game goes normally like how DDLC goes, they all join the same club, get together, read poem, yada yada yada romance. Except here Chara is trying so hard to keep you from romancing the other characters.. like.. at all. But being a player on a dating sims, they gonna try anyway.. which will go the same way as DDLC goes, and ends the first part w/ Dings’ death

Second part starts and it goes normally except Chara is now even MORE determined to not have you there. (So I guess either the others invite you or you were checking clubs and stumble the one here and got caught in Frisk offer for free manga read) And during the glitched part, Chara would ALSO starts to glitch because of the stress and will start blaming you like “What have you done!?” “What part of DON’T GET TOO CLOSE TO EVERYONE DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND???!!”

the thing about Aster is that when he’s corrupted he is incredibly manipulative on keeping people to stay with him and very possesive too

Like Yuri lol

Aster would redirect you into going through his route no matter what

but unlike Yuri he would still look as calm and polite as he always is

Until that last bit

And also probably do that suicide thing Yuri does

I forgot what Frisk would do here but Frisk and Aster fight would not be pretty it would be incredibly awful and Aster would be the first to throw the awful degrading words first which is.. ya know.. incredibly out of character but dang he would

By the end of this part, depending on whether or not you heed Chara’s warning or not, they going to react to it and it will affect their involvement in the next part

If you heed their warning and not actively going through the romantic route, they would settle down and explains things as they are. And how you can possibly help them fix things up in the next run (because the stone has rolled on this one you have to restart regardless)

If you still stubbornly try to romance everyone or exhaust their glitchness to the fullest, Chara would just throw the towel and say FUCK IT YOU WANT TO MESS UP EVERYBODY SO BAD?! BE MY FUCKING GUEST YOU ASSHAT! And just... leave you alone through the new part

Third part the game would glitched so bad you end up in another game intirely. A murder mystery game. Your childhood friend has been missing for a long while and no one have any clue to their where about. Until you suddenly saw them on your way to school. You try to stop them but before you can get to them they were  gone.. again. You go back on your track and go to school.

There, Chara invites you to the Literature Club, only to stop you halfway to the clubroom, and depend on the result you get on the last one, Chara would either inform you about how to makes things better for the other (as in genuinely just going through friend route and not try to romance anyone please) or just “Have fun you asshole” and leave you alone in the clubroom filled with... Frisk, Aster and... Dings!

You tried to talk to Dings like where have you been what happened to you and Dings just look at you like you’re the dramatic one. “I know we’re not on the same class and club but jeez chill! I’ve always been on the club after school, guess that’s why we never catched up to each other.” And just.. goes on normally. The club goes as it is with everyone introduce themself and you get home with the poem homework

The next day you come to school and there’s rumors that some students are suddenly missing too. Another day goes and out of curiosity, you try to ask around to Aster and Frisk’s classmates (you know they are on the same grade and upperclass) and you find out... they both also have disappeared for a while. You ask to Dings’ classmate and they answered no, Dings has not, in fact, been to class since... months ago. Despite him always constantly in the clubroom. Another student also missing too today, one of your classmate. You decide to approached all of them about this

Everyone thinks you are crazy and also reads too much of that mystery novel Aster gave you. Poem exchange time. Another time and place puzzle, this time you realized there’s also people appreance description there, that... strangely fits so well with your missing classmate! If you choose Chara last (and also Chara helping you in this route), they would invite you to walk home together. If you choose Chara first, they would ask you to “keep a close eye on the poems, you might find some hidden symbolism in it”. you go home together regardless, and Chara pulls you aside and ask if you figure out the clues yet. You both them put the puzzle pieces together and follows the directions. You find out where your classmate are. Dead. You called the police and ambulance and they go to the scene and question you for information. Chara answers most of the questions to make sure they won’t go to suspect you nor everyone in the club... yet.

Revelation moment, turns out Dings, Aster, AND Frisk are the ones behind the students disapperance and Frisk is the head of the operation. Later on finds out that Dings and Aster are actually ghosts who’s gone crazy and winds up killing people. even later on you finds out that Frisk was actually the one who killed them in the first place but they couldn’t remember Frisk’s face so they just go around in rampage

Ludum Dare 40 - Clicker Village Post Mortem

Ludum Dare 40 results just came out, so now would be a good time to examine the game we produced and analyze what went well, and what failed. I haven't written anything of this kind of length for a while, so bear with me if it fails to flow well at points :).

The theme this time around was "the more you have the worse it is". This theme was a bit of a hard one for us, in no small part due to our excitement for one of the other possible topics, and following disappointment. Luckily, there was an idea that had been kicking around in my head for a while that fit the theme quite well. Sometime earlier this year I'd been thinking about the techniques used by clicker games to maintain the interest of their audience, things like the sunk cost fallacy and feelings of false achievement. If you've ever been playing a clicker game and become frustrated and almost quit, but decided to keep playing because of the time that you've already invested, this is the sunk cost fallacy coming into effect. This gave me the idea of creating a clicker game that chastises you for playing it, with the intention of commenting on the effectiveness of such psychological methods by testing whether they can make someone play something actively unenjoyable. If you think about it, "the more you have the worse it is" technically fits any clicker game, as the more you play the game the deeper you are sucked into the psychological traps which make you unable to stop playing. I had also recently played Doki Doki Literature Club, so this kind of parody meta experience was fresh in my head(If you haven't played DDLC yet I highly recommend it, especially if you have a lot of experience with visual novels. I might write about it in a post later). So, we settled with a self aware clicker game, which we later named "Clicker Village".

I'll split up the bulk of my analysis into two headings, the game and the message, just to make it easier to follow. Of course these two things are closely intertwined, and (should) support each other, but for the purposes of this post a separation along this axis will be satisfactory.

The Game

There were a couple key areas in which we failed here, however overall we didn't include enough of the tropes of the clicker genre to really succeed as a parody of said genre. One key feature we missed out was upgrades, the kinds seen in cookie clicker’s store. This severely reduced the number of options available to the player, and made the progression a lot more boring than it should have been. While the message was the main attraction of the game, the game failing to be engaging means that few people will get to experience the message, as they lose interest too fast. This was reflected in some of the comments we received and our final result, as many people failed to see how it fit the theme. It also undermined our message significantly, as the whole point was that clicker games are only engaging because of their use of manipulative techniques. Of course, if our game fails to use those techniques appropriately then this message falls flat.

This was compounded by our pacing being a little off. We modeled the costs and incomes of each building on an exponential curve, with each building’s cost and income being 10 times that of the previous building. This runs contrary to mainstream clicker theory, as most clicker games start off with small gaps between building prices early on and larger gaps later, with the idea of sucking the player in with rapid achievement early on before spreading the content later to pad out the experience and heighten the false sense of accomplishment when a new tier is reached. This would have been a relatively easy thing to fix, since the costs were tied to single variables in the code, but a lack of testing was also a problem that we faced due to time constraints, so small adjustments couldn't be made.

Our pacing was also off, in that the game was likely too short, so much so that the "time wasting" nature of clicker games could never really come into effect, as the game did not take enough time to finish. This is also connected to the nature of the game as being a game jam entry though. Making long jam entries is often a very bad idea, since many people are there just to play and rate the game and want the time gap between playing and rating to be as short as possible. It also would have meant that even less people would have gotten the message, as more people would have dropped off before reaching the end. Still, a longer game likely would have been much better at conveying the message we intended to show.

The Message

Outside of the previously discussed failings, the mechanics we used to directly convey the message worked out quite well. We had time to implement letters which would appear based on certain criteria, for instance obtaining a certain number of a certain upgrade. These letters contained for the most part messages from the townspeople and had no direct effect on the game, serving instead as a way for us to speak directly to the player. These were well received by the players in the comments (on average), and helped greatly to communicate what we were trying to get across. These letters also added to the sense of discovery and anticipation, serving as a kind of unlock system, however there wasn't really any indicator of when these letters were appearing so this aspect of the system was a little underwhelming. It would have been better to have some kind of log or something where you can read previously discovered messages and see a list of undiscovered messages, possibly with hints for how to unlock them. We also could have subverted this later by having undiscovered messages that cannot be unlocked, taunting the player.

We also had a system where the soundtrack would become progressively more distorted and corrupted as you obtained more money. This served to add to the feeling of growing dread and the uncanny. While it could have done with some tweaking, it didn't line up sometimes with other uncanny aspects of the game, but for the most part it worked well and helped to build up the atmosphere.

Overall, while our message was relatively well delivered, we neglected to build a good enough game to support the story elements. Yet another reminder that any game aiming to be thematically interesting must stand out from its peers even when ignoring the message delivered. I may return to this idea later on and see if I can produce a more fully featured self aware clicker game.

The Technical

This time around I worked as part of a team of 4 people, and didn't do any of the programming. As a consequence of this we also used unity instead of Löve2d which I have made all my previous entries in. I mostly worked on the graphics and the writing, as well as the design which we all had a part in. Because of this larger team size we could be far more ambitious than I was ever capable of working solo, and this increase in quality was reflected in our results. For any of you participating in Ludum Dare next time around (it's in April or August I think), I highly recommend working with a team. It really helps to relieve the stress of the whole thing, and having someone to talk to while working can be a huge motivator. Being able to concentrate on a single aspect of the project instead of having to split your time between all the content also greatly improves the quality.

As far as tools used go, unity worked well and allowed us to easily port to WebGL. I'm not sure how much of an effect this had on our ratings, but I think it did pull in some more traffic than we would have received otherwise. I used Paint.net for all of the art, and it was as good as it always is. I am starting to notice that it slows down significantly on large canvases though, so it may be time to look around for another program.

The results we received were pretty good, this ranking in “overall” is a new record for me. Innovation being very low was not unexpected, as we didn't really innovate on the clicker formula at all. Theme being quite low was disappointing, but also not that surprising, since our connection to the theme was very much hidden in the later part of the game and was not super obvious. Again, the connection would have been more apparent if our game had of included more of the elements we were intending to parody. Humor being our top category is a little weird, especially as it was above mood. Most of the writing was very dark, and there wasn't really any traditionally humorous elements, so perhaps people just find clicker games funny? Mood being high indicated that a large number of people reached close to the end of the game, which is good. It would be interesting to see a more detailed breakdown of each category, possibly a median view or an exact number of each rating we received. I have a feeling that the ratings on some of the categories, Theme especially, would be split between very low and very high, with virtually no middle ground, as people who finished the game would get the connection and people who didn't would find it completely unrelated.

Also related to our results were all the comments we received. These comments were for the most part very good, most people praised the atmosphere of the game and the message. Some people seemed to really connect with the message and really enjoyed the experience, which was nice, and showed that even a clumsily delivered idea will still affect some people. There were others who didn't like the amount of writing, and mistook the letters for an extended tutorial system. I don’t know what we could have done about this, I guess some people just don't like reading. Once again, a lot of people praised the humor, which was weird. Overall I would call this a successful Ludum Dare. We learnt a lot about the importance of having an engaging base when trying to convey a message.
