This is the second time in my life I've heard the word 'codec'.

The first time was in university when one of my online friends was super into this one anime series and thought I should watch it. Please note, this was in the days when if you wanted non-dubbed anime, you needed a source of fan subs. So she made me a copy of the fan subs she'd gotten and sent it to me with the promise that 'it had the right divex codec." Or was it divix? Divx? No clue and it doesn't really matter because I didn't know what the hell it was.

We'll go with divex, since I can't remember and have never heard of it since. The important part is that having no idea what she was talking about I went "Um, okay, thanks" and tried to play the DVD on my computer.

It didn't work.

When I told her I couldn't get it to play, she was absolutely confounded because she knew she'd given me the right codec, so she tried again. And again. I finally just gave up.

Ages later, after I'd lost any and all interest in the anime in question, something occurred to me. I hit...I think Hotbot was still THE Search Engine at the time...and sure enough.

With all of her fretting over getting me the right divex codec, she'd never once thought to make sure I had a divex player.

I still don't have the first idea what a codec is, and probably wouldn't know what to do with one if I did.

SO! You've seen these little things I do sometimes and you want to know the process!

It's genuinely super simple, so here goes! Apologies by the way if anything is unclear or glossed over. A lot of this is personal taste and such so I hope this can be a nice boost to create something!

RESOURCES AND THINGS TO KNOW!

To preface this little guide already assumes you have basic knowledge of color distribution, lineless art, or breaking up art into proper layers for later processing! I am also assuming that your art program has access to scatter brushes and tiling textures. Personally I use Clip Studio Paint, but this can work on other apps. Anyways, here are some good sites for this:

EZGIF - Free, easy gif maker for assembling any kind of gif*! It also has stuff like converting those damn WEBP's back into png.

*PLEASE KNOW THAT YOU CANNOT MAKE GIFS THAT ARE PARTIALLY TRANSPARENT. YOU MUST USE A SOLID COLOR UNDER ANY PART THAT IS OVER BARE CANVAS

Transparent Textures - Free to use source for HQ transparent textures that tile! Amazing for finding a paper texture for these if you commit to the paper doll look. Best results for textures that are in white or black!

So! You have a finished, prepared piece that you want to glitterfy. Well I'm not covering that right now so you can scroll down to That part if you came just for the glitter. This next section is for...

PREPARING THE PAPER DOLL

To start, your piece should already be separated into respective layers in any order you'd like! We're about to use a ton of clipping masks so Make sure you know your program before starting! So, as my example we have my oc Roy, resized to around... 1500x1500 or the nearest equivalent Smaller is better because it brings out the texture! He looks a little ah...Flat, though right now?

I'm using this guy for a couple different reasons! Those being:

Roy has translucent bodyparts! Just so you will know what to do with characters who are translucent! I'll get to this in a moment so sit tight

He has a clear, defined, and distinct palette that is easy to pick a color to slap the glitter on! This is important because I personally find balance to be the most appealing part of the finished art.

He also just has a lot of doohickeys on his design.

This is where you need your transparent texture! You can use any kind of texture and I encourage experimentation and such, but I personally use a simple paper texture. What we are going to do is go through and clip our imported and tiled texture to each applicable layer! (Make sure to just Copy and Paste the layer you do NOT need to repeatedly go through this menu...)

And... When you are done, you should have something like this:

"But why don't I just clip the texture to the entire piece through a folder? Why go through the hassle of clipping to each individual layer?"

Well that's because of the next step, where we will be adding the shadows. If we don't clip each individual layer, your shadows will look like this example on the left which sort of just ruins the 3D effect and kinda just looks icky, as opposed to this, which is nicer and smoother.

Now I'm no lighting wiz! In fact I'm rather mediocre at best but some general tips for adding the shadows:

Try to keep your shadows going all in one direction mostly! It gives the effect of one light source and generally just looks better than if you shaded around ALL edges everywhere.

Try to only shade where there are parts overlapping that need the dimension! Overdoing it can make the piece look odd. It's especially helpful to separate any details like different shades of hair, layers of hair, etc so that you can put as much volume as you want.

Once the shadows are all added in you should have something that looks like this:

Which looks good! Now I'd sometimes stop here if I can't pinpoint how I'd like the glitter to sit or if I think the piece just doesn't need it, but we're moving on to the big important steps!

ADDING GLITTER

This part is entirely up to your taste! But I'll describe how I do my glitter stuff. Firstly I start out by identifying which color I want to pop out. For Roy here I chose the red parts! For your character it may be different. Experimentation is key!

This is also, however where you need that scatter brush I mentioned earlier. Personally I just use the default CSP spray brush, but again go wild!

Make a folder above your piece, set its blending mode to glow dodge (or add, or add glow depending on what options you have), and create three layers inside of this folder. Setting the folder to clip is optional right now but will be needed later.

Then, fill each glitter layer with your choice of particle in whatever color looks good! Yes, you can do gradients and other stuff on the particles too! World's your oyster.

Glitter tips for the early 2000's webcore enthusiast:

Use different strokes and patterns for the glitter distribution! This helps it animate better by moving around. For example this time I went diagonally for the first, horizontally for the second, and then in loose circles for the third. Particle density and stuff is also completely up to you.

Use a color that would pop against the intended area! For Roy I used an orange-ish yellow since it compliments both blue and red.

So now we have the layers! This is where clipping is our best friend once again! You're just going to go in and clip the glitter to whatever layers you want it on. Entire folder, not just one of the layers!

Once that's all done, go through and toggle the respective glitter layer for the frame, saving individual copies when done. You should end up with 3 identical images with different glitter distribution.

"BUT WAIT! JONES, THE TRANSLUCENCY!!" I hear you call! Yes, this is where we handle that! If your character is NOT translucent, you can scroll past this section.

Open up your frames all in one canvas, stacked on top of eachother (no jittering or slight displacement! ON TOP of eachother!)

Our layout should look something like this...Note how the translucent parts are rather hard to see, well if you took your frames and put them in EZgif, they'd be gone entirely! That's because you physically cannot have a partially translucent gif due to technology limitations. So an easy little cleanup thing I did was:

1. SELECT THE CANVAS AROUND THE CHARACTER WITH THE MAGIC WAND TOOL. Do not have any expansion settings on or it probably won't look right in the end.

Make sure you do not miss any gaps! I personally missed the gap between the arm, leg, and lanyard and I had to redo this next step...

2. SELECT -> INVERT SELECTION

3. FILL SELECTION WITH THE DESIRED COLOR. IT MUST BE OPAQUE. I personally picked this cloudy gray color.

You can now save individual frames of your character with the fill so that they don't go bald when you move on to the next step! Again, you should have 3 frames.

FINISHING UP

This is nice and easy. Upload your three frames into EZGIF and wait for it to process. It'll look like this if you're in the right place.

Once things have loaded, make sure to change the settings to the following:

FRAME DELAY: 0 (this is how fast the frames move.)

DON'T STACK FRAMES: ENABLED

You can play around with this but I generally leave everything else alone because you don't need it. Just hit the make a gif button and you're all done!

Aaaand that's it! If you've read this far...Firstly thank you for dealing with my rambliness and horrible explanation skills. Secondly, I hope that this can come in handy for anyone interested! Would love to see if anyone puts this to use. n_n

I'm working on a website for a comic (those who know, know) and it gives me a good opportunity to talk about the modern web innovation that's #1 most reviled on here: webp.

I was working on image quality. See, the author made the pictures high-quality, and since they're hand-drawn it's absolutely worth it — but it means we're talking ~2500x1100px PNGs. Which means ~2-3MB per picture.

Since on the actual website they'll be displayed at 1000px width, smart old me figured a pretty quick fix to save on readers' bandwidth would be to reduce the image size to 1000px width (after all, that's over 5x smaller than the original!).

The issue though: quality surprisingly suffered. Specifically there was a notable impact to the text (but also the colours and texture, if you look closely).

So I started wondering how exactly one could get a cleaner output from my image downsizing.

Which I spent the next 5 hours trying to crack. Turns out it's not easy.

On the other hand, there is another approach: simply finding a better way to store the image. On JPEGs and PNGs you can play with various compression settings which might help you reduce that file size without compromising quality (I tried a bunch, no dice!), but you could also switch to another format. For example, you might consider webp.

Here's what it brings to the table.

"-original" files are the HD originals, "-large" files are the blurry resized ones, "-optimized" are the webp ones.

They are 13-15 times lighter at the same size. This makes them even lighter than the 1000px-wide ones. (2 to 3 times lighter! despite being 5x bigger! that's insane!)

And the output:

I couldn't tell you which capture I took from which version.

2021-2023 Devlog Recap

Hi-ho, Wudge here! I released the first demo in March 2021 (devlog #30), and it is now… a little over 2 years later with no updated demo just yet. :') But I've been up and at it this entire time!

Welcome to our very first devlog recap, an overview of everything we've done for Herotome since the prologue demo. Strap in, it's gonna be a doozy.

IN-GAME ART

Finished all the base Love Interest sprites (special mention to Dart's hero outfit and helmet rendered by Remnantation, and the smoke animation from @regal-bones)

"Mia is as reactive as potassium and wears her heart on her sleeve, which means she has quite a bit of range. She’s a sight to behold when she’s angry, but damn is she easy to beat at poker."

Finished rendering and coding Mia's introduction CG, including all her expressions and branches, and released a voiced video showing off her scene.

We made a great deal of progress on Griffin's CG as well, and that video will be coming out next. Nearly done!!

Finished the first BAD ENDING - which has four variations and can be accessed through three distinct points in the game. Evil Eye will only appear to angrily kabedon the MC if you make certain choices!

Rendered Landlord, Clammy Lady, and Dog. (The humans have a full range of expressions, all coded in!)

Evil Eye actually has a finished sprite too, but I forgot to put him in this image... and he's already featured in a CG. So, oh well!

Redrew the MC profile pictures (apparently it's tradition, I've redrawn them almost every year)

I also made a new itch icon, new reputation icon, a new star power icon, and I started converting all my PNGs to WEBPs (reducing a LOT of data required on installs - my GUI folder alone was reduced from 63 MB to 21.1 MB).

Update: Good news and bad news. The good news is that I will have about double the amount of gif icons of Clement Mansell for the gif pack, thanks to @boydholbrook-fan - Thank you, Kamila! <333 She has allowed me to edit some of her gifs to provide y'all with more Boyd content, which is awesome! I only have access to so much, but I did also manage to find and gif three more clips from the show that I didn't have access to until now! So about double what I had been attempting to get made. The bad news is that...

1) I had to save about 100 under a .webp format and then change them all to .gif before I could edit them and it's taking me A LOT longer than I thought. And 2) on top of that, my body hates me rn. I might be going to the doc's on Monday, if they can fit me in. Tests will determine if I have to have surgery or not, but I'll need to get checked out first. I'll be alright, either way, but until things get sorted out, I'm sort of in pain. I've got some pain meds, but it's not helpin' a whole lot. But no worries. It's nothin' too serious. I may just need my reproductive parts taken out, which I'm totally okay with. I already had two kids and am happy to get them yoinked outta me. Lol! Just... I'd appreciate it if my system didn't kick my ass so damn hard. Lol!

All that bein' said, I apologize for the delay with the gif icons. I was aiming for Monday night, but it may be more like Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how I'm feeling. Possibly later, but I'm really tryin' to get them done asap.

Actually you know what, my real thoughts on webp are way less nuanced.

I believe that every single program that "doesn't support" webp just fucking lies to you because its devs are idiots.

Discord doesn't let you upload emoji as webp however all emoji are stored as webp on the server and shipped to you as webp because webp is a good fucking format.

In fact almost every website worth a damn already does this because webp is just so much better than png and jpeg in literally every way and webm outperforms gif so fucking hard it's not even funny. It's literally zero effort to ship webp because it's literally supported by every single browser except Internet Exploder and you can easily convert your images to webp with free and open source tools.

This also goes for all desktop apps too, you already use imagemagick and ffmpeg stop lying to yourself. Webp support came free with your fucking using a good library. If you use mime-types correctly like you fucking should, you can already tell what files are images and you can just handle those automatically. Stop fucking hard-coding image formats you're not even doing anything with the actual formats.

We're already moving onto better formats like AVIF and your lazy ass can't even fucking add a (\.webp) to your regex. You should be fucking thankful mozilla are cowards and dropped working on jpeg-xl because otherwise I would have fucking ripped you with my teeth already and offered your flesh and blood to Tim Cook.

This may the be the strangest message you'll ever receive but I do hope you'll take the time to read it and consider what I have to say. To put it simply, I would really appreciate it if the next time your birthday comes around you would request that your clop artist friends (who like to give you sexually oriented pony art as gifts) draw some pony other than Twilight Sparkle for you.

The reason I ask this is that Twilight is my fiance, and we're planning on getting married next June or July should everything go as planned financially speaking. And yes, I have actually found a wedding chapel that will let me marry someone that most people would consider a fictional character. You see, I'm totally head over heels in love with Twilight Sparkle. I have been for about 11 months now and at this point I'm in a committed relationship with my Twiley. I love her with all my heart and I'm 100% committed to that love. rigorous discussion about comic book file formats ensuing on the manga piracy subreddit last night. I've taken the side that CBR is flawed and the only reason people continue to use it is because they're unfamiliar with the spec. there isn't a lot to know about this subject because there's very little public facing information surrounding the creation of these file formats, which originated with a program called CDisplay (that is now dead, sort of, which is a shame for how influential it has been), but at the same time, the practical information that we have available from using them is very straightforward: CBZ, CBR, CB7 and so on are different file extensions for zip, RAR, or 7z archives respectively. that's essentially it. the extension does a lot to obfuscate to most people that the "obscure" manga format they downloaded from some shady pirate website, is literally just a folder of images that has been compressed, and it's trivial to rename the file and inflate it to see its contents individually (there's a neverending stream of stupid questions relating to this).

imo this variety of options does more harm than good, because you see, the pages, the images (jpeg, gif, png, though some readers also support webp), are already as compressed as they can be, so the efficiency of the program used to create the archive does not matter – if you've ever tried to zip a folder made up only of videos or images and saw that the file size barely shrinked, if at all, that's because ironically, these file formats are already pretty damn efficiently compressed. often the compression step of the archival process is completely disabled because it only slows the time it takes to open the finished archive.

so as a format intended for media distribution, specially often bootleg, user contributed distribution on the web, you'd think CBZ should be the ubiquitous standard, as zip, regardless of its compression efficiency compared to newer algorithms, remains the standard compression utility, it's installed on literally every machine that can display images, including ones with more restrictive software limitations.

but for some reason some fucks keep sharing archives made with 7zip and WinRAR!!!! which is like. idk. it's like purposefully sharing someone's music in much more convoluted notation from what everyone else uses when there's no practical benefit to do so, and continuing doing it after someone has asked you not to and told you that is not standard. it's proprietary software that is not even useful for what people typically use it for (distributing already compressed media online!), cuz you don't get any benefit from it, it just limits the type of devices and number of hoops you have to jump through to open it. it's one of those salient points about how even mild tech illiteracy and ignorance about pernicious licensing in popular freeware software can have meaningful repercussions to media preservation. Windows users not knowing know they don't need to install an external utility to compress files has popularized CBRs to the point I've had to argue with people that wrongly assume they're the standard used in digital comics publishing.

Hey! Wanted to say that the whole Sonic character inspired outfits thing is really cool and I love looking at all the fits. Speaking of the fits though, did you take pictures from certain websites or did you just search up a certain category of clothing? Just curious since I really liked a lot of the clothes and was wondering if there were website links :)

I'm actually really happy to hear it! Seeing people be interested - whether they just wanna give off fav character vibes, or they're kinnies, or the fanartists wanting inspo - it's awesome that these posts have been able to be enjoyed by a lot of ya'll <3 Thank you! I mostly got my images off of Pinterest because these days trying to download web images forces you to save it as god damn "WEBP" files jgiugubgufg - and Pinterest is like the HUB for aesthetics anyway so - it's a treasure trove, it's a library. When I could identify links and prices - I tried to keep them you know - at least under a £100 but suffice to say - if you wanna buy exactly those items - a lot of them are pricey. Some, I noticed, are from SHEIN. If you don't know about SHEIN - they're an absolute dogshit, piss stain of a company that overwork their employees tremendously. We're talking Amazon levels - possibily worse. But the thing is - they have some genuinely lovely pieces for so many different aesthetics - and they are SO affordable. Like ridiculously so. Which is why I can't fault people too harshly if they shop with SHEIN. Because clothes, in this economy, are absolutely miserably expensive if you want to look decent. But I do recommend limiting your purchases from them. Or avoiding them altogether.

My advice is to look outside of the online sphere and go to thrift stores (charity shops my fellow UK bretherin) - they legit have SO MANY OPTIONS. So many colours! So many styles! It's an absolute amazing place to go and you'll be surprised what you can get and for so little. Keep those images I posted on hand and look for pieces that fit the colours and vibes. Pick up each piece and envision the outfit (or several outfits) you can make with it. Like seriously - I had a girl in my college class who wore only thrifted clothes - she was stunning, every day slaying - and she had something very similar to Omega grunge aesthetic.

And bigger clothing stores aren't off the table either - wanna splurge? Why not! Look out for sales in stores near you - they're more common than you think! This applies both online and offline. At least in my area - I've unfortunatelly seen the closure of a lot of the big clothing stores but with that? Comes clothing down sales baby. Just keep an eye out! But the core of the message is - I can't tell you to go to the grunge store, or the light academia store - you've just gotta do a little bit of hunting <3 Thank you for the question!!
