Chapter Ten Summary

Diced Junior

The big day had finally arrived for Dulce to compete on Diced Junior. This was the cooking competition for young chefs, where four contestants battled through three rounds: appetizer, entrée, and dessert.

She had to go up against three other talented kids. There was Rubiya Jabal, a fellow peer from Tartosa Middle School. She was a humble, yet incredibly smart and competitive girl who excelled at spelling bees. Then there was Lewis Mack, a Scottish farm boy who loved to use fresh ingredients and collect trading cards. Lastly, there was Alex Marino, a quiet skater kid who wrote for the school newspaper.

The panel of judges was impressive, featuring Mia D’Angelo-Ramirez, a Michelin-starred chef, restaurateur, and main judge; Carlo Mancini, a stern executive chef and food entrepreneur; and Sofia Bjergsen, a Grammy-winning pop star with a background in culinary arts.

As the competition began, the first mystery basket was revealed. It had merguez sausage, veggie flatbread, pea shoots, and shakshuka sauce. Dulce decided to make pizza wedges, Rubiya strove for spaghetti, Lewis tried a pea shoot salad, and Alex went for a raclette.

When time was up, the dishes were judged. Lewis’s vinaigrette was praised, but the burnt croutons were a major flaw. Dulce’s pizza wedges were flavorful, though some judges felt they were too heavy for an appetizer. Rubiya’s spaghetti impressed everyone, but the meatballs were slightly dry. Alex’s raclette, while enjoyable, lacked creativity.

The atmosphere was tense, and the contestants were sent to another room while the judges made their final choice. The four kids acknowledged the bond they had already formed and exchanged contact information. Then, they were called back to the judges’ table.

A bigger issue than burnt croutons had surfaced. Turns out, Lewis had failed to fully follow the rules by not using the vegetables from the flatbread. Since his croutons were so burnt, the mistake had gone unnoticed until a producer pointed it out. The judges encouraged him to audition for Diced in the future. Lewis accepted his elimination and said his goodbyes.

The entrée round began. The three chefs were given baskets containing jicama, hatch green chiles, goat chops, and chana masala. Rubiya decided on chana masala goat tacos with a green chile salsa and a jicama dip. Dulce aimed for a tomato soup with goat, chana masala, hatch green chiles, and a mix of vegetables. Alex chose to make an egusi soup using cubed goat meat, hatch green chiles, spiralized jicama, and chana masala.

As they cooked, the judges analyzed their strategies. They noted that both Dulce and Alex had opted for soups, which would lead to direct comparisons. Dulce worried about the flavor balance and decided to add red chiles for more depth. Rubiya struggled slightly with the jicama, while Alex remained intensely focused.

As they worked, confessionals of what they’d do with the prize money were shown. Rubiya wanted it for culinary school. Alex planned to donate it to the ALS Association. Dulce wanted to support her mother’s bakery and talked about “people who… took advantage of certain things, so the bakery suffered for a long time.”

With time running out, the tension escalated. Dulce and Alex accidentally collided, causing an awkward interaction. The final seconds were a whirl of plating and last-minute adjustments. Dulce, unable to taste her dish, could only hope that her soup had come together. Being a baker's daughter, she knew she could nail the dessert round if she made it there.

The young chefs felt discouraged after facing setbacks. Sofia reassured them, reminding them that they had been chosen for their talent and potential. Then, each chef presented their dish. Rubiya’s flavorful tacos were praised, but the judges said that the tortillas had become soggy. Alex’s egusi soup was rich, yet lacked balance. Dulce’s tomato soup wowed the judges with the flavor combinations; however, the dish was too spicy, overpowering the other flavors, and the meat was too tough.

After careful deliberation, the judges made their decision: Dulce was eliminated. Alex and Rubiya struggled to process it. The judges explained that while Dulce had raw talent, she needed to refine her technique and be more mindful. They advised her to continue learning, emphasizing that small details could make a big difference. Dulce was disappointed but took their advice to heart, realizing she got too ahead of herself.

After her elimination, Dulce reunited with her family, who greeted her with love and pride. They reminded her that being selected for the competition was an achievement, and they couldn’t be prouder of her efforts. She began to see this as a valuable learning experience.

Before leaving, Mia approached Dulce. She wanted Dulce to know that the judges' praise wasn’t just for the cameras. They genuinely believed in her potential. She said she’d keep an eye on Dulce’s career and cautioned her to make smart choices moving forward.

Dulce left feeling grateful for the opportunity. She shared photos of her day on social media, including a group picture with the other contestants. Although she didn’t win, she was determined to keep improving and continue chasing her dream.

Anyways the DC canon full names are so generic its like infuriating to me so here are my alternate full names names with some explanations:

S1:

Jake: Jake Kuroda

Meaning: First of all I’m keeping his full name as Jake instead of making it short for Jacob because I just don’t like the look or sound of the name Jacob. But second of all I chose Kuroda because it’s a Japanese surname that means black field (or black rice paddy). I thought it tied back to his association with death and graveyards in season one (lost his grandparents, lost Miriam and Ellie in apocalypse episode, biggest fear was graveyards, has skulls on his clothes, etc).

Tom: Thomas Velasco

Meaning: Velasco comes from the Spanish surname Vela, meaning watchman. I felt like it both fit his past as a spy and his present as team leader, both in seasons one and three.

Ellie: Elliott Gray

Meaning: Elliott fits her best out of all the Ellie names in my opinion (Elizabeth, Elaine, etc). I do like the surname Parker but think Gray is more suitable since it ties back to her design and her morally gray nature.

Gabby: Gabrisya Malinowski

Meaning: I don’t hate Nowak as a surname for Gabby but Malinowski is slightly less generic and I think it suits her. It means raspberry and was used to describe people who lived near raspberry fields, which both connects to the red in her design and her love for nature. Also I think the inclusion of Mal- in her surname is nice since it hints towards her future status as a villain. Also she’s sweet like a raspberry :) Blorbo from my show.

Miriam: Miriam Foster

Meaning: I actually really like Foster being Miriam’s surname, it’s less on the nose than something like Baker but still hints at how she fosters her skills and how she sort of fostered Jake and Tom (I miss their friendship so much man).

Alec: Alec Çelik

Meaning: Once again I actually like Alex’s surname, it means steel which I feel fits him as a strong villain.

Fiore: Fiorella Ricci

Meaning: Third time in a row; Fiore’s surname doesn’t really have an applicable meaning here but I just really like how it sounds and looks idk. I did consider Orsini (“little bear”, since she’s small and fierce), D’Angelo (“of the angels”, both since she looks innocent and as a tongue-and-cheek nod to her being a villain; also ties back to her being Catholic), or Abbandonato (uncommon surname meaning “abandoned/forsaken”, since she loses all her friends/allies by the end of season one and also since it’s kind of implied that her parents don’t care much for her), but I feel like Ricci sounds and looks the best, meanings aside.

Lill: Lilliana Park

Meaning: Park is a common Korean surname, which fits with my headcanon for Lill, but I chose it mostly because of the English connotation of…a park. And she spends a lot of time in nature and with her Girl Scouts in presumably city or national parks.

Will: William Greene

Meaning: Green. Like his shirt. Idk, society if Will had better characterization before he was booted.

Nick: Nicholas Gould

Meaning: He is not related to Dakota I don’t believe that. Anyways Gould like gold the previous metal, I don’t like Nick I don’t care if his last name is good society if Nick never existed.

Ashley: Ashley Hayes

Meaning: Graham is also good ig but Hayes like hay is funny to me.

Dan: Daniel Dressler

Meaning: Dressler is a common Ashkenazi surname that means to turn or spin, which I feel fits his habit of turning or changing who he voted with in most eliminations.

Drew: Andrew Leclair

Meaning: Leclair means bright light in French, which I feel fits since he illuminated Tom’s secret to Grett and since he clarifies himself in writing.

S2:

Aiden: Aiden Cadena

Meaning: Cadena is a Spanish-speaking surname that means chain. I picked it because he’s like, an e-boy. You could also get symbolic with it, like his fears chain him back? Idk

James: James Castelo-Domingos

Meaning: James’ Tik Tok handle in season two was JamesCDofficial so I figured his last initials were C & D. Castelo means someone who lives near a castle and Domingos comes from the word for Sunday or the lord’s day, and I figured those both hinted towards his massive online empire and him being the last person in the game in season two— the conqueror and the last one at the end.

Lake: Lake Müller

Meaning: This one’s been canon for years I’ve just accepted it already.

Ally: Allyson Valentine

Meaning: I feel like this is like a perfect online screen name, Allyson Valentine sounds like a real streamer name to me, but I mainly picked it after Jill Valentine. Like the Resident Evil character. She’s a gamer bro.

Hunter: Hunter Keyes

Meaning: I had a couple different ideas for Hunter’s surname, I wanted to go with Turing for famous codebreaker Alan Turing or Vigenére for the Vigenére cipher, but I felt like Keyes worked best when referring back to his interests in puzzles and his strategic skills, both because I think it goes better with his first name and because it has more Celtic origins since I headcanon him to be Scottish.

Tess: Teresa Hyun

Meaning: First of all, ONC can rip Korean Tess from my cold dead hands. But second of all I think Hyun works because depending on the hanja used to write it, it can mean dark/mysterious and worthy/virtuous, both of which fit Tess at different points in the series.

Maggy: Margaret O’Connor

Meaning: I honestly picked Maggy’s surname mostly for the sound and look; O’Connor allegedly means something along the lines of “hound of desire” or “lover of wolves”, which idk if you really stretch you could talk about how she desires companionship or how she’s been a lone wolf her whole life, something like that— but I just kind of thought it Worked more than anything. O’Connor is a pretty common Irish surname and I headcanon her to be Irish so that was also a factor in choosing it.

Kai: Kai Setiawan

Meaning: Setiawan is an Indonesian surname which means “loyal friend”, which I thought suited Kai since he’s loyal both to his friends (Maggy is a good example of this) and his beliefs.

Connor: Connor Boutella

Meaning: Boutella is an Italian surname that means “father of the hill”, which I feel suits him as the oldest member of the cast in season two and the leader of the heroes in later season three.

Karol: Karol Aguilar

Meaning: Karol is both a nature lover and a strong, conniving, and assertive antagonist, so I thought Aguilar (“haunt of eagles”) was a fitting surname for her.

Riya: Riya Varma

Meaning: First of all while I know his posts aren’t technically canon, I could’ve sworn Riya’s surname used to be Varma instead of Sharma in an old Ordartz post? So I kind of got attached to that. And second of all Varma just fits her better I think; the V sound is a lot sharper than the Sh sound which I like for her, and also Varma allegedly means “armor” while Sharma means something along the lines of “joy” or “bliss”, which I think suits her better since Riya is clearly a very armored person who’s afraid to be authentically kind since it’ll destroy her image.

Rosa María: Rosa María Amador Ortiz

Meaning: Rosa María is very loving and kind, and also very willing to stand up for her loved ones, so I figured Amador (“lover”) and Ortiz (“brave/strong”) fit her well.

Oliver: Oliver Bennett

Meaning: First of all idgaf about Oliver enough to find him a new surname but second of all I think Bennett is an ironic surname for him since it supposedly means “blessed one” and he was so unlucky in season two like all the time.

Yul: Yul Sunwoo

Meaning: This was another one that I picked mostly for the sound and look of the letters; I couldn’t find any reputable websites with a meaning for the name but it seems that every website I did find consistently insisted that Sunwoo had a positive connotation so I think it would be funny if that was Yul’s last name considering that he’s fucking terrible.

If you have any other ideas or notice something I got wrong with the explanations lmk, I just like coming up with character names. Yeah <3

A few of my favorite songs and artists

As an artist, I am heavily influenced by music that I like and I feel that those songs for the good or the bad are heavily ingrained in the music that I make. I definitely like the style of certain singers, bands and producers and I aspire to be like them in some aspect. Maybe an element from this song, a drum pattern like that song and a vocal style like another song. Because I heard and listened to certain songs growing up and others when I was able to seek and define my own musical identity any of these elements can contribute to what impact I will pull from my musical arsenal. I like certain piano riffs from Frank Ocean and Eric Roberson, and certain Drill Beats from 03 Greedo.  I like to create my own sound that pays homage to an element that I may hear as I am listening. I think much of the music that I made in high school has a heavy Tyler the Creator and Frank Ocean influence, but also has a heavy keyboard influence that is uniquely my own. I believe the music that I am making now is influenced by the transitions and lyrics of The Dream, along with people like Ant Clemons, and Teddy Walton. But at the same time all of my favorite artists are weaved in and throughout whatever I am working on.  I am also heavily influenced by the music that my relatives liked during the time I was growing up. Artists like Frank McComb, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Will Downing, Anita Baker, the Temptations, Babyface, Najee, Phylis Hyman, Prince, Chante Moore, Angie Stone, Joss Stone, Teena Marie and so many others. I have always admired the songwriting skills of Babyface, and I study his songwriting skills and approach. I have a personal goal to take songwriting courses and improve my style and approach, which I believe will greatly enhance my productivity and performance as an artist. It will also allow me to branch out and be able to write songs for other musicians and artists. I would really like to work as a songwriter behind the scenes while crafting myself as an artist. This way I will be established and validated through my work with others and well known for my work with others and my own projects.
