Gah, all this shout out stuff I'm seeing for my artist mutuals is so cute and deserved so lemme also do it cuz i love them 😔✨💛💛💛 [I actually have SOO many people i love and adore its ridiculous, but i'll keep this "short" by shouting out the very small circle I followed when i first started to make fanart 👉👈]

And by "Short" i mean im gonna add a cut cuz i never shut up :3c @booigi-boi ~the~ #1 Ted spankofski artist [no room for argument, this is just factual.] The way they draw face's and poses, and hair, and clothes, and joey in general is just absolutely incredible!!!! [The moment I saw her art I was just awestruck, and so ridiculously inspired to start drawing again that it's ended up with me right here now... so if you hate me blame her /J] She just has such beautiful line-work and an ability to create such expressive fun pieces, along with having such a talent of using minimal shading and yet making every art piece look totally decked out. Just!!! its literally all so beautiful. incredible. amazing. [Imagine this goes on for way too long and its incredibly obnoxious.] 🐐💛✨ [She's also just a very neat person in general]

I love the bold line work they often use, along with their coloring and just gah! everything made by this person makes me so happy every time it pops on my dash, i feel like it has to be impossible not to fall in love with their work! [Also have you seeen how they draw curt mega and all of his characters? god they are so brilliant and fantastic]

To me, a majority of their artwork comes off so warm and... nostalgic?[Granted it is probably because of the beautiful use of warm colors and also the time period that comes with Curtwen mostly... but still.] And just, i dunno man. i just really fricken adore this persons art. I remember one of my first thoughts being how much it made me think of those really beautiful short-film animations, usually silent except for some gorgeous instrumental soundtrack in the background... and, just, wow... anyway ~

@its-short-for-jackalope this person is SO passionate! Their support towards the things they love, such as tinlightment and Pulp musicals, is everything. I also absolutely love the way their art manages to have this beautiful yet adorable style all while managing to capture the resemblance to the actors they are referencing perfectly! From their simplest drawings to their bigger pieces, i think they are all absolutely wonderful~ These people are just so crazy talented and i appreciate them very much 😔

Character ask 1, 6 and 21 for Curt!

1. Why do you like or dislike this character?

I love that the hero of the story is a hyper whiny loser who just can't get it together until the last twenty minutes, and even then "getting it together" is killing his ex-boyfriend and quitting his job – all the things that make him suck also make him so fun.

Also I'll be honest with you, the first time I saw the show just the real CM's delivery of "are you ready to share that with the world?" took me out because of the unspoken "because I'm not". It's the whole flipped circumstances, right? The whole narrative says Curt is reckless and Owen is careful but in the end, when it really mattered, Owen was reckless and Curt didn't give them up for anything! The tint of him being a gay man during the Lavender Scare and the way that colors his relationship to secrets and what he stands for as a person despite the goofy campiness of the musical is just like, ugh, chef's kiss!

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

I always joke the reason I'd be a terrible spy are all the reasons he is too - we're both very loud and fidgety and being bored feels like someone is peeling your skin off.

21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?

Like, my favorite thing to do as a writer or to do in the story? Writing-wise, I tend to listen to a lot of The Mountain Goats and also a Curtwen playlist I will post one of these days. Stay away from whiskey love and stay away from men!

Storywise, I love putting him in situations where he has to be real, despite his emotional constipation, because Owen certainly isn't going to be! And I think he knows on some level they're doomed so he has to try because he doesn't quit easy!

trick or treat!!

This one is part of a set! In July, on one of my Hadestown periodical obsessions, @samuelandthesun and I wrote two spytown inspired pieces: he started one of curtwen as Persephone and Hades while I started the Orpheus and Eurydice one. This is the latter.

Curt and Owen had shared their first drink not long ago, and ever since then they had been inseparable. There was something magnetic about the artist, something in his music that seemed to make the world turn around, or at least that’s how it was for his partner.

“Say, love,” Owen said, with his usual sarcastic tone, “how will you fill the dishes if we wed? There’s not much to choose from, and even less we can afford.”

Those kind of questions were usual at the beginning of their partnership. Curt, however, never backed out.

“Well, beloved, know that when I finish my song, we’ll have plenty of food. Trees will grow everywhere– This bar will be a forest, and we’ll gather fruit from it.

“Wow, so your solution to feed us is to leave someone out of business and make everything free? It’s not a bad idea, honestly, it would work.” Owen said, satisfied to see his lovers face sadden. Curt looked out of the corner of his eye to the waiter who was smiling, amused by the couple’s conversation.

“No, I mean, the trees and the bar can coexist- And we’ll take our share, but so will everyone else. It will be for everyone.”

“What a pity, I thought you would create a whole world just for the two of us.”

Owen looked amused, but his eyes were sincere.

“Don’t you think we should create something for the whole world if we could?” Curt said, his eyes too shining to notice his partner’s sarcasm.

That shine, that innocence, was what made Owen go back to Curt’s arms again and again. He didn’t understand it: how could he keep dreaming in a world as arid as theirs? It was something that fascinated Owen, something he tried to understand.

“And how would you do it? You don’t have the resources, nor the money… Unless you’ve been hiding your fortune all this time.” Owen laughed, hugging his boyfriend.

“The only fortune I have is surrounding me with his arms right now” Curt said, leaning on the tender hand that caressed him. Then, Curt leaned forward until he was buried into his partner’s chest.

“Hey, don’t lean without warning– I won’t be able to catch you one day” Owen said, but his laugh betrayed him. He held his partner in his arms, and squished him agains him as he retuned the hug. “What will you do, then, when the world turns against you when winter comes?”

Curt’s warm hug surrounded him as the sunbeams hit his face. It was funny: ever since he was with Curt, Owen had stopped being cold in the streets.

As they laughed and hugged, the artist answered. “That’s why I’m working on a song: once it’s finished, seasons will be as they used to be. Winter will come, yes, but it won’t last forever.”

A new laughter, although this one was longer than the others. Curt separated from his lover, trying to reproach his beaming partner.

“Your song? Fixing the world? Please! Dreaming is good, but you should also try being realistic, love.

“But it’s true! The song will be able to do it!”

“Prove it.”

Curt said nothing, slightly shy. “It’s not finished yet.”

“Well, it will be a preview, then.”

Then the young man stood from his partner’s lap. Curt took his beaten-up guitar and started tuning it in clumsily. Owen looked amused but interested at his precious partner.

Owen Carvour had lost hope some winters ago: too many long nights out in the open, too many days clacking his teeth, too many nights with an empty stomach. He was empty, in and out. A silly song, even if it was full of love, would not be able to change something that had been set in stone ages ago.

And then, Curt started singing. His voice was higher than Owen expected, echoing more than seemed possible in the den they were in it.

It was then when Owen heard it.

“La, la, la, la, la, la, la…”

The grass that was hidden under layers of snow, the sunbeams that barely came through the gray clouds, the cold wind that guided Owen to cruel lands… It was as if all of those things kneeled under the voice of his lover. It was as if the whole world had listened his declaration of love and was answering with the same joy, bending all laws for them.

Curt looked at him in the eye, with eyes full of love that had paralyzed him since the day they met. And then his love, with his beautiful mouth that had sung that miraculous song, smiled. His words weren’t as clear, his tone as celestial, as if the world had stopped listening. It was worth it, though, to smile at his lover.

“It’s not finished, but…”

“Curt, what are you saying?” Owen said, with regained hope that had been crushed many years ago. He run towards his lover. “It was–“

They held hands. It was then when Owen noticed something between them: a lonely flower, a red carnation, brighter than blood or their passion. Stronger than love or death. Owen looked at it, then raised his eyes, illuminated by a determination brightest than any flame.

“You have to finish the song.”

The pain and anger and emotion in owen's voice when he yells "I AM GOING TO SINGLE-HANDEDLY DISMANTLE EVERYTHING YOU'VE EVER BELIEVED IN" at curt just fucking Gets to me okay!!!!!! his voice is so raw!!! thats him letting out everything ges feeling, him dropping the cool facade and the one-step-ahead mask for a moment to let his rage and hurt out!!!! Because he's not just trying to get revenge, he's making curt feel everything owen felt.

Owen believed in spying; he believed in the spy agencies; he believed he was making a difference in the world; he believed he was doing the right thing and being the good guy; he believed he was saving the world through spying; he believed in curt, and that all got shattered. he almost died, he fell and got caught in an explosion because of curt's careless mistake, and curt ran. he abandoned him and left him there to die. that's owen's point of view. all his morals, everything he believed in, got ripped apart in that moment, his foundations were shattered. and then chimera came along and saved his new disillusioned self, and he held onto that pain for 4 years and took it out on the one solid target he had available--curt.

So he dismantles all curts beliefs. Curt believes owen's dead; owen's going to let him feel that grief and guilt for years then shatter that knowledge in the worst way. Curt believes owen is good; well not anymore, owen rips that version curt has of him in his head apart. Curt believes spies are forever; owen's going to make an entirely new system and put an end to spying forever. Owen wants to tear apart everything curt believes in because thats what happened to him, and it was curt's fault.

curtwen music headcanons (modern) because i’m hyperfixating on SAF

• Owen definitely likes The Smiths, The Cure, and The Beatles. He doesn’t really like much modern music

• Curt prefers music like Royal Blood and Fall Out Boy, he also likes musicals but would never admit it

• They both love Queen and Frank Sinatra

• Curt can play guitar, really well

• Owen has the voice of an angel but rarely sings

• Curt’s favourite song to play is Little Lion Man by Mumford & Sons, Owen loves that song and he’ll sing along. It’s kind of their song

Feel the Beat

Curtwen bodyguard AU in which Curt Mega is a ragingly famous singer whose life is constantly under threat due to his outspoken political stances and willingness to tell off literally anyone who pisses him off, foreign dignitary or not. Owen is his newly appointed long-suffering bodyguard. It is the 1980s, and the music business is booming.

Curt Mega is a political nightmare. He says what he means, talks candidly, laughs loudly. He doesn’t lie or play coy- he even tells people mid-interview about his plans for the next album. Everybody knows that if you’re looking for the truth, you go to Curt. Also, if you’re looking for a bop. Because Curt can back up his talk with enough talent to knock you over. This means he is regularly being targeted by people carrying deadly weapons and barstools.

While Owen might admire Curt’s willingness to put his life on the line for what he believe in, but it definitely doesn’t make Owen’s job easy. As Curt somehow manages to dodge every pressing danger and attempt on his life throughout his international tour, Owen is forced to admit that despite his better judgement, he’s quite fond of Curt. In fact, he might even like him. This is made complicated by the fact that it’s actually Owen’s job to kill Curt and he’s just delaying it at this point, five months in.

Still. It would be a damn shame to leave the tour unfinished, wouldn’t it? Owen has managed to delay the inevitable for another three months- until the final concert in London. Curt and Owen grow closer, against their own wills, and find themselves spending most evenings in Curt’s hotel room, playing cards and drinking whatever shit whiskey Owen wants to torture him with that night.

About halfway through their tour route, there’s an attempted (and by attempted I mean they aim for Curt and hit Owen) shooting and Curt and Owen have to hole up in a small East German hotel for a weekend. Curt patches up Owen’s bullet wound and they exchange longing looks and tender touches until they finally succumb to their feelings for each other and spend three days feeding each other strawberries and having altogether too much sex.

The next weekend Curt drags Owen to a tiny disco, where Owen sighs and hems and haws... and turns out to be a better dancer than Curt, because of course he is. They kiss on the dance floor- if this was a film there would be a conspicuous pan to reveal a paparazzi taking photographs of the kiss while everyone around them continues dancing. This is not a film, so I’m just telling you- photographs are taken.

Curt’s career is ruined, his face is everywhere, and Owen still has to go through with the job. Cynthia, Curt’s manager, bawls them out something fierce. Curt just laughs. He tells Owen he plans to skip right to the last concert in London, crash the venue and give one more good performance before he’s forced to retire. Owen, painfully aware of how little time he has left to figure out how to save Curt, just kisses him.

The trip to London is tense, but tender. Owen tries to strain every last ounce of kindness and affection into his relationship with Curt, despite, or perhaps because of, the ticking time bomb in his pocket. The day before the concert, Owen breaks. He tells Curt the truth, and they have a terrible, distressing falling-out. Curt believes that Owen used him, Owen believes that Curt hates him, and neither of them is at all alright.

That night, as Curt walks onstage, Owen refuses to take the shot. He keeps refusing, and doesn’t answer the many, many calls from his employer. He just waits, watching the man he loves put on a damn good show. Just as Curt finishes singing, still dazed and upset, he turns and sees Owen waiting in the wings. He smiles at him, and Owen smiles back, apologetically. Curt starts walking towards him, but Owen is walking out to him, and they just sort of collide in the middle in an awkward, gentle hug.

“I’m sorry,” they say at the same time.

“I love you,” Owen says, and this time, Owen is the one to initiate the kiss, in front of thousands of people and hundreds of cameras, in front of the person who hired him to kill Curt in the first place. Who promptly gets the message that should he send anyone else after Curt, they will be returning to him in a body bag.

Curt writes three albums of love songs within the next year and makes a comeback with aplomb. Owen is still his bodyguard. He just gets better benefits, like health insurance. And a partner.

Favourite Character: Owen Carvour, babyyyyy! This might be somewhat inspired by the way fanfics and such portray him pre-Russian affair, but I just really like his character. I like that he’s so complicated and so conflicted with himself. He makes horrible decisions, but I think there are a ton of redeeming good qualities about him that we didn’t get to see that would make him such a compelling figure. I mean, Curt fell so in love with him that he spent four years drinking himself into a grave. There had to be reasons we did not see that made him incredible. Also his accent my god. I love Curt with all my heart, but something hits different about Owen.

Least Favourite Character: Um probably the informant? I loved a lot of his jokes, but he just seemed like an extra character. I would have been more content giving some of the time spent on him to seeing more of Owen pre-Russian Affair, or having more time to see him post-reveal. 

Favourite OBC Cast Member: So I’m gonna take these two questions to just scream about Curt and Joey individually because there isn’t much of a different cast and they are legitimately my two favorite people. ANYWAY:

Curt is the sweetest, most selfless person I’ve ever met??? Legitimately??? He puts so much of himself into everything he does and genuinely strives for greatness. He played Agent Mega so freakin well, and you can just see when he’s performing (as him or any other time really) that he is having the best freakin time of his life. It brings so much happiness to me. Honestly, how he hasn’t been snatched up and put into something huge astonishes me. Also his voice makes me cry it’s so damn good- ANYWAY

Favourite Current Cast Member (If Applicable): Ok so now Joey. Joey is JUST AS MUCH the nicest person out there and is so freakin funny. I don’t know how one person managed to capture my humor exactly, but every single thing he’s in and has his hands on makes me laugh like an idiot. He’s incredibly talented in such a criminally amazing way. I really think Spies is the best he’s ever sounded vocally, and it shows his acting range so beautifully. Each time I watch, I don’t see Joey, I just see Owen. I am forever in awe of him. Softest boi rights!!!

Favourite Song: This changes every damn day omg. The one I keep going back to however is One Step Ahead. Maybe it’s because there’s so much backstory and emotion packed into one song. Maybe it’s because it’s one of the few times we get to see Curt and Owen actually interact in the show. Maybe it’s because Curt and Joey’s voices have never sounded more incredible. Whatever it is, I absolutely am a huge fan of it. Such a powerful and intense song.

Least Favourite Song: Honestly? Probably Eyes On The Prize I. I freakin love Lauren with all my heart (if I could give her more money on Patreon my dumb ass WOULD), but the song itself just doesn’t do much for me. Eyes On The Prize II has the intensity and depth I think the song needs. With Susan’s ‘you gotta’s (though funny), it just kind of loses it’s weight for me. Lauren’s voice is godly no matter what she sings, but I think a hard-nose character like Cynthia deserved a song more along the lines of Linda’s solos in Black Friday than the lighter of the two EOTP jams. It would have fit better.

Favourite Act (If Applicable): THIS IS A HARD QUESTION UGH. As a whole, I’d probably have to go with Act I. It’s got the best jokes, the story flows well, there’s a lot of intrigue and angst™. I love getting to know Agent Mega and see him trying so hard to bounce back. I also love the DMA. Aside from Vanger (god I love him), Doing This, whatever background dance Curt does in his seat during One More Shot, parts 5 & 6, and Spy Dance, Act II doesn’t do a ton for me. 

Favourite Ship: NO QUESTION AT ALL -- Curtwen. Seriously. I love everything about them and forget so often that we only really see them as “them” in about three parts of the whole show. There’s just two really complex and complicated characters who you can TELL loved each other and had something so serious going on before everything fell apart. My heart aches whenever I think about just how much they had had to love each other for their dual reactions to have occurred. I love them so freakin much.

Least Favourite Ship: I literally stay away from so many other ships because I’m just really into Curtwen lmao, but I guess Owen & Tati? It’s fine if it’s as a joke or for a mission, but like...they ain’t it if it’s for real. 

If There is Something I Would Change about The Musical: Oh boy, I’ll give you my top five:

1) GIVE US MORE CURTWEN BACKSTORY!!! I just want to know more of their time pre-Russian affair. I want to see why Curt was so crushed and why Owen became so spiteful. There are reasons, and maybe TCB has a thing in mind to show us those reasons, but damn I would’ve loved to know more. Even if we didn’t “see” it, just having Curt talk about it. Man.

2) Speaking of Owen, TELL US MORE ABOUT HIM! I felt myself craving more information about him and his character. All we learn about him personality wise is through Curt’s fondness in Spy Again and in the bits about him in The Coldest Goodbye. But I want to know more about him. How was he in private? Why was he so absolutely against secrets that he was willing to commit himself to Chimera? To the Baron? Curt hints that he used to lift Curt up. I would have loved to see a bit of him doing that so we could see even more prominently how big of a contrast Chimera!Owen was, why Curt was so willing to shoot him. I feel like we got tastes of him, but not anything super concrete. I wanted more.

3) I wish we had gotten a serious scene like we did with Curt and Tati with Curt and Barb. The ending scene with them is cute and sweet, but I think Curt apologizing to her or even possibly confessing he can’t ever love her the way she wants, but can love her as a friend as much as she needs, would have been wonderful. God, it would have been wonderful. She just deserved better than to be dragged along. 

4) During One Step Ahead, instead of having the pause be so we can check in on Barb and Tati, I would have loved pauses where Curt and Owen were firing back and forth trying to stop each other? Talk things out? And this isn’t just me being #1 Curtwen stan over here, trust me. I think it would have been interesting to see more of their emotion carrying through the chase and not just assuming it was emotional through the song (though it does a very good job). It could have added to the suspense and buildup, and contrasted well against the sillier aspects of their modes of transportation. We could have had the Barb/Tati scene fit in there still, but a few pauses in the song to have Owen and Curt speaking and Owen being like JUST SHUT UP CURT, YOUR WORDS MEAN NOTHING while Curt’s like BUT IF WE JUST TALK IT OUT. Idk, I want it.

5) PUT COLDEST GOODBYE REPRISE ON THE SOUNDTRACK PLEASE AND THANK YOU

Ratings: 9.5/10, this show took over my life. I stan it so hard it’s not even funny.

SPIES ARE FOREVER; favourite character: depending on my mood, it’s either tatiana or curt. curt is a major comfort character for me, but tatiana is honestly just so intriguing and interesting that i love her for the same amount, but for different reasons. right now, i’m in a tatiana mood. honestly, rewriting that one shot sounds really appealing and i might go do that after answering this ask. least favourite character: the n*zis, but then again, i don’t consider n*zis human beings, so perhaps the informant, because he doesn’t sit right with me on how he was written in certain parts. favourite OBC cast member: since all of them were OBC, either mary kate wiles (because her singing is literally a gift from heaven) or curt mega. favourite current cast member (if applicable): honestly, i’ll take this as “if COVID didn’t happen and the SAF 54 below concert was still a thing” question, because if so i would’ve made a blood sacrifice to see britney coleman sing live. oh my god, oh my GOD. favourite song: the title number! or eyes on the prize II. i don’t know, man, i have weird taste when it comes to my favorite song in this song, because on exception of a few i loved ALL of them. torture tango is way up there, probably third, along with spy again.  least favourite song: eyes on the prize I seems. off. to me. i can’t explain it. also, while the n*zi songs are clever satire they’re musically kind of in the low middle of my ranking list. and the spy again reprise is alright, i guess, but also very low. favourite act (if applicable): act one! it’s got some of my favorite scenes and jokes of the musical, plus the story really just punches there. mostly, it’s where i can, yknow, NOT feel sad and be ignorant about how this musical ends. favourite ship: curtwen. because i’m a dumb butch, forgive me. tatibarb is inch resting and i have been looking respectfully on occasion. least favourite ship: anything, like, comphet? or meg*big, because that EXISTS and i pray to god everyday that it didn’t. guys it’s so bad, just- we’ve been cursed with a sin. me and my homies hate meg*big. if there is something i would change about the musical: *cracks knuckles* alright, here’s my opinions. get ready. the show is already so solid on it’s own. really, a lot of the issues i have with it are things i’ve personally just found irksome or off, and not a lot of the core aspects of the musical. for now here’s a bullet list; 1. barb wasn’t written very well. i get that her dialogue was supposed to be funny and such, but some jokes just didn’t hit right and more of her was played off for laughs, which made me a little disappointed. fanon barb is written well (for the most part, some people are just idiots), and if they ever DO have a sequel (or when they release the rights) my only request is for her to be written better. give some justice to the funky lil bi scientist. 2. they would have NOT gotten away with the n*zi satire if they had written the musical today. while it is very good satire, i remember them talking on the livestream about how if they released it today they wouldn’t have gotten away with it. perhaps it might be changed when they release the rights? i’m not sure, but that’s my take on the whole thing. other than that, it is actually good satire. 3. one step ahead could’ve been staged differently/less for comedy. i don’t know, i can’t take it seriously (even though i still love it) during the context of the song. not BETTER, just.. yknow, differently. this is more of a “not something i would fix” but “something i would like to see if it could happen” bullet point. 4. short answer to a hefty question; what do i think about one more shot? i like the song, i interpret it as a “last chance before we all die, let’s go out with a bang” drinking binge. irrational? yeah, but they all though they were going to die, so in their minds what did they have to lose? idk, i’m on the fence but the song slaps. 5. the ending dragged a little too long, maybe? idk, i’m trying to find small things without going into the bigger core aspects because those are still really, really good. 

ratings: 9.5/10 (i’m afraid to give it a 10/10, although i love this musical to bits and that would be my knee jerk reaction if someone random asked me on the street, i actually thought about it and landed with this.)

Unfinished and Probably Never Going To Be Finished Curtwen Oneshot

“You never said you were afraid of a bit of bad weather, Curt.” 

Curt Mega grumbled, pulling his blankets tighter around him as yet another rumble of thunder shook their loft, rattling the windows. A few moments passed, then lightning lit up the sky—causing Curt to flinch. “‘M not scared.” His voice was muffled due to the blankets, and Owen just chuckled, sitting down next to him and wrapping his arm around the lump of blankets that was Curt.

“Sure you’re not, love.” Owen murmured as Curt leaned into his side. He could tell that Curt was shaking, no matter how much the other man denied it, and when yet another crash of thunder erupted in the air, Curt involuntarily yelped, startling. Owen pulled him closer, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “What can I do?” 

“Music?” Curt whimpered, moving an arm out of his blanket burrito to gesture to his phone on the other side of the bed. “Headphones are on the nightstand.” Owen reached over, grabbing the phone, and scooted over just enough to grab the noise-canceling earbuds Curt had requested. He handed them to Curt, who unlocked his phone and began searching for the playlist he wanted.

Once Curt was situated with music, Owen stood, much to Curt’s initial dismay, and walked to the window, shutting the blinds and pulling the curtains shut, doing the same on the other side of the bed before going to sit next to Curt, who leaned into his side. The two sat in silence for a few minutes; the only noise between them was Curt’s occasional humming along to whatever music was playing. Owen smiled, wrapping an arm around him and pulling him a bit closer. 

He placed a soft kiss to the top of Curt’s head, who leaned into the touch, pressing closer to Owen, if that was possible. Curt just smiled, sighing contentedly, and closed his eyes. “I love you, hon.” 

Owen smiled, brushing his fingers through Curt’s hair, and kissed his head once more. “Love you too, darling.” Curt smiled in return, turning his head and kissing the crook of Owen’s neck.
