I saw this mentioned as a bit of an aside on another post but since it was a little bit besides the point of that post decided to make my own post about it instead of derailing that one.
It IS very interesting how in Lord of The Rings orcs are the soldiers of a (compared to the rest of the world) highly industrialized and technologically advanced military force, yet pretty much every high fantasy media that has borrowed the concept of orcs since then has instead given them the "tribal savages" treatment, and i don't know how I failed to realize that difference until I saw someone else bring it up.
Like of course this is not saying that the depiction of orcs in LoTR is not problematic for a lot of different reasons (there have been years of discussions unpacking that) but it IS an interesting change and I think a pretty ideologically loaded one.
Thinking about it makes me remember this article I read a few years ago about how, regardless of genre trappings, a lot of high fantasy (especially in ttrpgs and videogames) actually has a lot more in common narratively and thematically with wild west ""cowboys vs indians"" films and shows than it has with its aesthetic inspirations. Like once you look at it with that lense in mind it becomes really conspicuous how much these works like giving the "tribal savages" treatment to any sapient creature that exists for the heroes to fight.

can you explain how suits is a piece of fascist propaganda? i havent seen love death robots since the first season dropped so i dont remember much about it but i wanna hear your two cents about it if you dont mind!!
ok, the premise begins essentially as this very videogamey tower defense setup, there are farmers in cool mechs fighting against a spontaneous faucet of baddies that simply appear through holes in reality. this is already a little bit fashy, hordes of disgusting insects crawling at the border, one character seemingly tortures and kills them for fun, but also i'm not such a spoilsport that i won't let you have your simple video game enemies that crave blood so you can justify mowing them down with your cool mechs. the problem is in the twist ending, when we zoom out and discover that the earth setting is actually a small terraformed dome on an alien homeworld and the humans are colonizers. It recontextualizes everything, like I can't even feel good about the simple monsters being killed because they're just aliens and they'll necessarily appear monstrous to humans and also they're terraforming their fucking planet which is a terrifying thing to imagine from their point of view. the overwhelming rural south motif doesn't help either, it's cowboys vs indians but the indians are disgusting bug monsters.

my notes on operation message aside from "this episode is anti-native in that it's a parody of dances with wolves/it plays on the typical stereotypes + the cowboys vs indians westerns"
sauerbraten was justified in getting mad at hoagie for starting an Actual Campfire in the school hallway actually. but also he only threatens him with detention. where is the line drawn coward
i love that you never actually see hoagie pick up the note while it's on-screen. i think that was clever. i like the few occasions in knd where you can take note of something like that upon rewatch. no pun intended
hoagie almost hitting passerbys with his horse. ironic for the ex-hall-monitor
six gum gang being neutral here. i guess if you hire them or ask they're just like ok i'll do that and then steal a kid's lunch money while i'm at it. otherwise they would've just been standing around in the halls doing nothinggg
multiple little gags that would've been funny had they been rephrased/reworked for a plot without these elements (ie. "my dad knows his dad")
i love that eggbert tells muffy about the splinter cell for some reason. though i guess maybe it has to do with keeping the peace between grades and how the knd help the school in general or something. i have no idea
the comic (note) was better on account of being so short and lacking the tribe stuff entirely

get this woman a dramaturg because starting "but daddy i love him" with a reference to how the west was won, a western in the classic cowboys vs. indians, manifest destiny sense, is bizarre and just short of an imperialist dogwhistle, i already hate all her world war-themed lyrics and the "ours" MV, how does she find a way to make it even worse? maybe she confused it with all quiet on the western front

Hey so, recently McPig outed to be kind of a bigot? Like he said a lot of F and R slurs and also said some n*zi jokes. And when there was a buzzword about the whole Native Cheese debate and that his apology just felt dishonest. Have you heard?
i'm assuming you're asking this in good faith so i'm just going to answer this as politely as i can and publicly so nobody else asks me about this
for the record; i am autistic. i am bi. this means that i can speak on the faggot and retard slurs. i am white, so i cannot say much about the indian/native cheese issue.
the slurs were years ago and were back when anti-sjw humor was a lot more common. yes, it was 2018/2019, but even i was still in that type of humor back then. it takes a while to grow out of it. not to mention, queer people work on pizza tower. multiple queer folk do. this is objectively a fact. if they were uncomfortable with this, they would have spoken out about it. they haven't, and are still friends with him.
the indian/native cheese shit is not my territory, so i'm not going to comment on that outside of i'm confident mcpig meant well considering he has stated he based it off of "indians vs cowboys" like in old cartoons
his apology felt honest to me. it genuinely was old humor and an old mindset, and he has admitted he's not proud of it anymore. therefore, it should be left in the past. not to mention, that old stuff was only brought up after pizza tower released. so to me, the callout itself feels dishonest and disingenuous.
that's my feelings on it. tl;dr i don't really care since he isn't like that anymore and didn't actively hurt people

Jokes aside, I’d argue Belos isn't openly homophobic because there's no point to it; There's no point in trying to 'redeem' witches and demons by changing their lifestyles if he's convinced himself they're all going to Hell anyway, so the only thing he needs to do is kill them. "Why bother teaching them anything if you can just wipe them out?"
Belos only changes aspects of witches' lives that are directly necessary to his plans; In this case, applying sigils by justifying the lack of them as 'wild magic', and then keeping magic divided with different covens so they can't easily rebel against the system that's applying sigils, thereby allowing it to keep doing that and marking as many targets as possible for the draining spell. It's really quite simple. That's why he'll refuse to replenish the Palistrom forests but then promote women like Hettie and Terra to coven heads; Because Hettie and Terra will be killed by the draining spell anyway, but Palismen won't be.
And let's be real... He's a Puritan white guy. He absolutely believes that queerness is inherently a threat to society not just on a spiritual level but a biological one, because it discourages people from making babies because they're more focused on partners of the same sex they can't reproduce with. He probably thought Boiling Isles queerness was contributing to an inevitable decline that he merely hastened and that's why he allowed it. And Belos can't be openly bigoted because people wouldn't listen to him that way.
He's also definitely racist. Belos making an 'exception' for Luz is totally meaningless because white racists make exceptions for brown and gay folk all the time, while still clinging to their beliefs. Luz just happened to be the only human around since centuries, and that's better than no humans because the lowliest one is still above the greatest demon. And he still tried to murder Luz when she didn't flatter his white savior complex, and didn't adhere to his idea of what a proper human should be.
Even if Belos didn't try to kill Luz... Genocide isn't just murdering people. It's also erasing a culture, such as when white people assimilated Native American children, forcing them to convert to Christianity and dress like white people and speak only English, under the claim that they were 'civilizing' them. So even if they were alive, it was still genocide and it was still racism in the form of the White Man's Burden.
He was a white boy raised in a colony, everyone would've taught him that the indigenous people were 'savages' and Philip not only devoted his life to exterminating an entire culture he deemed evil and demonic, but actively enjoyed it too. Why would he stop at brown humans, unlike Caleb who already unlearned one major prejudice of his. If he never learned of the Boiling Isles, he'd have gone after women in Gravesfield (which would've been misogynistic in practice regardless of Philip's intentions), and probably Native Americans too because his witch hunting games are no different than Cowboys VS Indians.
Like I dunno man these white racists do have fellow white people they care about, and are willing to make exceptions and humor brown women too. But they're still racist and will refuse to listen to those people when called out over their bigotry, and ultimately choose that. Any argument that Belos wouldn't be guilty of other human prejudices is purely wishful thinking, and fairly contradictory to his characterization and whole narrative.
And we can wax poetic about why Belos doesn't openly disparage Luz for being brown, queer, and/or a girl, but we know the real reason why; It's because Disney censors would throw a conniption over portrayals of bigotry, and the show was already shortened for 'not fitting the brand'. Look at how Texas banned critical race theory. They think discussing racism is inherently racist, kinda like Twitter users. But with the added difference that they know it's a callout of the people running corporations and the government and investors (AKA themselves) and they hate that.
This kinda gets me back to an earlier point I made; I think the fundamental disconnect fans have with the show over Belos is that Belos stans (not necessarily fans) recognize their character's backstory and motives are something gross that can't be romanticized, and that's why they work so hard to reframe the focus towards Philip's dynamic with his brother Caleb, emphasizing codependency, and religious suppression and guilt. Because they can romanticize that, but not the intentionally pathetic core of Belos' character (itself a satire of certain subgroups).
They're seething over the reminder that their sexy aesthetic will always be second-banana to a 4channer complex, and salty that the crew chose to discuss something topical instead of making a sexyman villain, because their complaints can be boiled down to tastes and preferences, not actual objective critique. That's also why they claim the finale 'retconned' Belos and stripped him of nuance, because all the show really did was just frame and acknowledge his desire to be right as cowardly and selfish, instead of flattering him with tortured abandonment angst over a brother he never cared enough for. As if we didn’t have the ghosts in the previous episode for that purpose.

I just want to tell you guys that I'm really excited for this game. I've always been fascinated with the western frontier as a kid (my first taste being the movies Spirit and that An American Tail movie where Fievel and his family move to the west) as well as the several wild west oldies that gets played in channels when we only had cable). As an adult, my fascination and love has just reignited.
I feel like wild west as a genre that we knew had considerably dipped in popularity in the current times, only being put back to the spotlight due to Red Dead Redemption 2 and such. But apart from that, my only other exposure to the genre was the, uh, thick 80s romance novels my mother owned.
So y'know, it's great to see people dipping their toes in the genre with a fresh take apart from the usual formula I see in the genre back then (sheriff vs bad guy, bad cowboy vs good cowboy, cowboys vs Indians because imperialism is cool apparently, etc).
Also, without spiraling into a huge wall of text, I just want to express my appreciation for the fact that you included the Chinese and black diaspora in your game. They were the backbone of the true wild west, after all. On a similar note, will we have Mexican vaqueros and Pueblo Natives here too?
Thank you for the comment, happy you like it :D
As for the question: I dunno if you would/can count Isaac (he's Mexican-American), as I'm earlobes deep in research on various cultures of the time and the general area, so I'm not daring to dip my toes in too deep.

💀HELP ME FIND A Kakashi x Iruka FANFIC💀
hey sorry but i would really like help finding a fanfic i read like 4 years ago. might have been made in 2011 it was 7ish chapters on wattpad and followed kakashi because the elders wanted him to find a “mate” to carry on his blood line. tsunade made it into a game show based on the batchlor and took betts on who kakashi would pick out of all the girls.
iruka was kakashis like assistant making sure he did everything and looked good. each chapter was a new day with an activity, the ones i remember were a simple date, casino, meeting the family of the girl, beach day, and “cowboys vs indians”. hinata was a contestant and iruka was throwing hands because she was her student. pakku also told kakashi to pick iruka.
kakashi and iruka visited kakashis dads grave
after the game show ended kakashi got his shit together and picked iruka and made people suprized but genma (i think) was like give me my money bc he wrote that kakashi would pick iruka.
i know it was a bit problematic for the “cowboys vs indians” but i remember really liking it but i simply can’t find it anymore
i’m also writing this at 3am bc i just thought about it

Finally done with my holiday break. And what did I DO on said break you ask? Loads of stuff, but these are my first painted miniatures of 2024! A unit for Silver Bayonet, the Napoleonic gothic horror skirmish game.
I present to you the crew of the Nancy, ably led by Captain Mackintosh, semi-reluctantly roped into supernatural horror-hunting by the reactivation of his naval officer's commission, and his crew of definitely stalwart and upright seamen (as well as a couple Royal Marines on loan from the Admiralty. Just to make sure none of the Navy's orders are mysteriously lost in transit and that all the financials stay present and correct.) These lads are mostly Perry Miniatures with a single representative from North Star along with various conversion bits sourced from all over, as well as my first foray into simple sculpting with green stuff epoxy resin. Also the most intensive basing that I've tried yet, to look like ship's planking. I'm quite happy with how they turned out.
Tumblr media
The individual shots of figures and descriptions are under the cut:
He's Alexander Mackintosh, nephew to the laird, and he does disdain men who are vain, the men with powdered hair!
Tumblr media
Mr Stanhope, the Marine Officer is the captain's right hand man. As mandated by the orders of the Admiralty. But he's a demon with a sword in his hand and that's quite welcome, given that there might be some actual literal demons to fight at some point or another. (He's dispensed with his normal hat plume in deference to the Captain's insistence that despite being dragooned into the King's service this IS ultimately a civilian ship.)
Tumblr media
Mr Gatkins the Royal Marine. A taciturn fellow, he shoots first and asks questions only when specifically ordered to do so by his officers.
Tumblr media
Mister Lannis is the ship's master gunner (Artillerist, in game terms) and his jaunty straw hat is very nice, thank you! (I included a chest of powder and shot from Mantic Games because I had to come up with something to denote who he is during gameplay)
Tumblr media
Dr Phillips the ship's Doctor/surgeon, and a quick and dirty sculpt of my own for his bonesaw (again, had to differentiate this guy on the tabletop. I think it's a decent job. Bonesaw with a cutlass hilt, he's a real combat medic this chap.)
Tumblr media
The venerable and curmudgeonly Mr Elms, the ship's carpenter (a Sapper, in game terms). This was the most intensive work of this whole lot: I started with a metal Perry Miniatures sailor figure, lopped his arms and head off, grabbed a pair of arms from the Oathmark Dwarf Light Infantry box and a head from the regular Dwarf Infantry box, then I sculpted an apron (luckily for me aprons are just flat sheets so it's not THAT hard) and then I grabbed a free musket from the Wargames Atlantic Afghan Tribesmen box. Whew. I think it ended up looking quite nice. Very characterful.
Tumblr media
Able Seaman MacWhorter is along for the ride and excited to show off his swordsmanship against all manner of supernatural toffs.
Tumblr media
And last but not least we've got Mr Harris, the local guide and scout. He's a crack shot and he's worth his weight in gold when the shore party is trying to keep themselves oriented on land. (This model is from North Star Military Figures and I have to say I love that most of their native american models are like this: this is just a guy, not a fantasy cowboys and indians pastiche.)
Tumblr media
Issues with this team are that the vast majority are using pistols, we've only got three muskets in the unit, that's not a lot of long range shooting, might make things difficult vs a more musket heavy warband. But ah well, it just calls for a bit of aggression, doesn't it? Get in on 'em, as I always say!

I think it's a little silly to get mad at people being worried about the event's theme. When I saw it, I got a jolt of 'Oh, no...' because when I think of westerns, I don't usually think of outlaws and trains. There's a longstanding history of racism in the genre. However, it's also too early to call racism with the event. The staff seem to be going more towards the pony express and gill rush than towards cowboys vs 'indians'(in quotation marks because that term is both incorrect and also vague considering the amount of indigenous cultures that exist in the americas alone). All we can do is wait and watch. And so far, they're just focusing on the wildlife found in the southwestern united states. You can acknowledge that the theme can be iffy while also acknowledging that they're trying to make sure that the event itself isn't racist. They're not exactly equipped to give history lessons and if they were going that route then they'd definitely end up handling something terribly.

Roy has a windmill made of matches. What is the punishment for witches? Death by fire.
We are the spark, that'll light the fire, that will restore the Republic. The spark is that the Resistance must survive. That is our mission. Now go back to your stations... and may the force be with us.
It also looks like an Indian headdress. Is Roy the Indian now? About to get a taste of manifest destiny. The FBI boss is Indian. Cowboys vs Indians.

What're your favorite books?
Is this real, or something Tumblr just does? 🥴 If one of y'all asked me this, thank you!
My favorite sentimental books are:
The Road by Cormac McCarthy
IMO the most "accessible" book by the author I look up to most. I picked it up in the book store, read it IN the book store, bought it, and have given it to several readers since. It's devastating, quick to consume, beautifully written (McCarthy was a genius), and it never leaves you.
The Call of the Wild by Jack London
Jack London is a top favorite author, too. This book is important to me because as a Girl Who Loved Wolves, it was what I wanted to write when I was a kid. I remember buying it at a book fair when it was waaaay above my reading level - but that never stopped me from trying. I was so proud when I finished it. A few years ago I read through it in one sitting, and laughed at what a simple book it actually is. It's a great adventure novel, though. If anyone enjoys Jack London's (very fun) writing & wants to read about human characters, I recommend Sea Wolf.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
My introduction to Jane Austen. Not my usual cup of tea, but I cannot put anything she writes down. I feel like this lady really understood the human heart - and she awoke something in me and every other reader in the enemies to lovers department with this novel.
A Separate Peace by John Knowles
Read this one when I was very, very young and will never forget it. The bond between the main character and his friend continues to be a major influence in the way I have my characters interact. The story is heartwrenching. The dark academia vibes are awesome. If you like Saltburn and would still enjoy it with 800% less weird sex stuff (not that I am complaining about the weird sex stuff in Saltburn lmao), I think you'll enjoy this classic novel.
Since those are classics and kind of obvious, I'd like to throw in a few things I've read recently that I'd recommend - not permanent favorites, maybe, but still good reads:
Knockemstiff by Donald Ray Pollock
I do not recommend this one to folks with strong triggers, or anyone who is squeamish about reading some bleak, FUCKED UP shit. It's fucked up, but this dude's writing is stunning. The happenings in this vignette about an Appalachian town are a train wreck; horrifying, but you cannot look away.
Gentlemen of Space: A Novel by Ira Sher
It's been a couple years, but I found this book in a beach house and read the first few chapters there. I was mesmerized by the premise (boy's father is an astronaut who goes to space then cannot get back, to keep it short & simple), and the haunting prospect of the two "communicating." If I recall correctly, it got little attention and poor reviews. While none of the characters particularly interested me, the prose was so good I bought another book by this author. I think this one is aesthetically fascinating and would love to hear others' thoughts on it.
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
I am not actually finished with this one, yet! I'm listening to the audio book, and Spotify only lets me listen to so much a month. I am kind of enjoying the fact it's forcing me to slow down to absorb and anticipate the next installments, so I'm not paying extra. Plus, wtf, Spotify. You cost enough money already. Anyway - this book is SO slice of life at times. So wholesome and enjoyable and pleasant. Then, when it isn't wholesome, enjoyable, or pleasant, it's absolutely horrifying. I can't speak to how politically correct it is. It's a Western, published in 1985. There's "cowboys vs Indians" stuff in it. If that's not something you feel you can enjoy reading, I cannot recommend this one. But! if you want to take your time and really indulge in a pretty slow paced but still fascinating Western, this one is brilliantly engaging.

Der Schuh des Manitu is a German western. It’s wildly racist (“cowboys vs. Indians” with no native actors. Just a lot of brown makeup.) and it’s homophobic in a very specific 2001 way. I can’t speak to the original script and acting but the version dubbed in English is so bad it’s one of the best movies ever made.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ highly recomend

I’m probably late in suggesting this but… King James I published a whole book about witches, a guide of sorts, called Daemonologie. Published in 1597, it saw another reprint when he became king in 1603. James was said to have a fascination with witches and demons, to the point that it’s claimed Shakespeare wrote in an additional scene with the witches in Macbeth to pander to James’ tastes. The thing is…
James thought witches were evil. And his Daemonologie book explained how to recognize witches, how they worked, the animal familiars they used, all that stuff, ultimately to give witch-hunters an idea of how to find and kill them; Because the main solution to witchcraft in this book was execution. Daemonologie was meant to expose the existence of witchcraft to the common people, and prove it.
Philip and Caleb Wittebane entered Old Gravesfield in the year 1613. Just a decade after the Royal Re-Release of Understanding Witches (So you can kill them). Philip documents a lot of the stuff he sees in the Boiling Isles, to a scientific degree, cataloguing, categorizing, etc. And in the first diary entry we hear, Philip ruminates on how he wishes humanity could see the Boiling Isles and understand…
Tumblr media
@fermented-writers-block already suggested this to me a while back, the idea that Philip initially wrote his journal as proof of witchcraft and especially the demon realm’s existence, so he could convince people to help him eradicate the alleged threat, and/or prove he went on a successful crusade that saved the world. Granted, the people of Gravesfield seemed like earnest believers by that point, but I can imagine Philip taking real-life inspiration from King James I to convince others around the globe, who may not be as receptive to his claims.
Anyhow, I think it deeply re-contextualizes our understanding of Philip’s diary entries in a complete 180 way; Most of us were under the initial impression that Philip’s fascination stemmed from a place of genuine wonder, curiosity, and appreciation for the Boiling Isles. But knowing he’s a witch hunter, it seems his interest came from a place of condemnation; Wanting to understand the witches so he could kill them. Whether James actually believed in witchcraft, I’m not sure, but to Philip, it was lore contributing to his favorite game of destroying the Bad Guys; Cowboys VS Indians, basically. The Collector accuses Philip of having fun destroying Grimwalkers, and they’re not even his main target.
It’s a borderline fetishistic attitude towards witches; Philip is enamored, he wants to know and understand and figure them out. But he’s so deeply committed to dehumanizing and hating them, wanting their utter annihilation. Witches exist as the enemy NPCs in a video game where Philip immerses himself into their lore and in-universe dialogue, even as he slaughters them in droves. It’s a sick and sadistic pleasure at the expense of others he loathes, paradoxical in the way fetishization is; Philip’s previously-shown interest is not a contradiction, at least not from a writing perspective.
It works as a way to trick the viewer while still making total sense. A brief outside glimpse might suggest to the unsuspecting that Philip DOES like witchcraft, but no, he’s an objectifying colonizer who wants to own and appropriate, not learn and engage with on the same, humble level as a learner. Philip sees himself as a conqueror looting knowledge instead of riches from his victims, and he gets just that from people like Luz and the Collector.
He doesn’t really understand what he’s playing with and he doesn’t want to; He’s the White Dude who indulges in ethnic stereotypes and cuisine, in the tourist-y commodification of cultures, while at the same time voting for minorities to be outlawed. I would even compare Philip to a trophy hunter, knowing all the stuff about his prey, writing comprehensive guides… all for the purpose of how to kill and destroy them, as part of some big game.
I get the feeling that Philip ultimately WANTED witches to exist; Because if he was truly genuine about saving the world, about protecting people, it’d be a relief to find out there was no threat after all. But Philip wants for there to be a threat, never mind what it can pose to others, because then he gets to be the hero!!! He gets to be chosen one who goes on a sick adventure beating people up! He goes on rants about a hidden threat beneath our very eyes, not because Philip actually wants to warn people, but because he sees this as his opportunity to be the savior; So really, Jacob Hopkins IS Philip, isn’t he?
