which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

i've covered this for dumbledore, merope gaunt, and percy weasley so far, but let's go - for round four - for... harry himself.

i'm always surprised by the sheer number of people in this fandom who are resistant to the idea that harry can be... kind of a dick - and, above all, that he has a tendency towards self-centredness, obsessiveness, and impulsivity which cause problems for him and affect his relationships in the canon series.

and which are things he's going to need to work on after the series is over. one of the things which i think it's most fascinating to explore when it comes to harry and ginny's post-war relationship is how harry learns to always see ginny as an equal - having spent most of deathly hallows thinking of her as someone he has to keep safe, and whose feelings on the matter are less relevant than what he thinks should be done - and i must say, i fear, that a "omg nooo this is romantic! harry did nothing wrong!" interpretation of this is always a clear sign that the fic isn't going to be interesting reading...

but before the "hinny is a flop" girlies start feeling smug, harry needs to grow as a person regardless of what pairing he's in - and, indeed, if he isn't in a relationship at all - because the entire point of him as a character is that he's ordinary and human, and yet is still able to do incredible things - and defeat a villain who is extraordinary and inhuman - where others have failed.

and, in being human, harry is flawed and complicated and messy. and he's much, much more interesting when these sides of his personality are taken into account, rather than him just being a quiet, meek, perpetually lovely angel who just needs to receive a kiss on the forehead from every other character in the series.

which character is way hotter than everyone else seems to think?

Just a Rant about Slytherins in Harry Potter

I just watched this video on YouTube about the depiction of Slytherin House in Harry Potter. I agree with a lot the creator said, but I'm not going to recap the video since you can watch it. However, I do want to talk a little about Slytherins. And of course, this is just my opinion and I don't mind if people disagree respectfully.

One thing that I don't like about Harry Potter and ultimately the reason why I'll never love it as much as The Hunger Games is because of how one-dimensional it is. This aspect reminds us that at the end of the day, Harry Potter is a series for children. It has themes that are more complex and maybe not appropriate for kids, but I think a lot of fans forget (especially adult fans) that Harry Potter is a kid's book. I fall victim to this as well because I became a Harry Potter fan as an adult. Fun fact: I've only been a fan for 9 months; I can't claim I was a fan since I was 8 years old like some long-term fans can. Anyway, a lot of things in Harry Potter are seen as a dichotomy. Most characters are either good or bad and all houses are either good or bad (and the synonym for "bad" in this case would be Slytherin).

I think the reason why Slytherins are seen as bad is because the Harry Potter series defines "bad" as anyone who's a murderer, prejudiced, and/or has a hand in murder. Just as the video pointed out, the only (slightly) significant Slytherin character who mostly goes against this definition is Slughorn. But think about all the murderers in Harry Potter; perhaps the only Harry-Potter-defined "bad" person who isn't in Slytherin is Peter Pettigrew.

We see plenty of characters that aren't completely good (and of course, no character can ever be a saint 100% of the time) and unlikable that aren't in Slytherin. Lockhart was annoying and stuck up. Marietta Edgecombe betrayed the DA. Zacharias Smith was a pain in the ass. Cormac McLaggen was arrogant. Percy Weasley betrayed his family for a while. What do most of these characters have in common? They're arrogant, but they aren't seen as bad as Slytherins. The sin of arrogance is not nearly as bad as the sin of murder, so of course these characters are going to be put on the back seat in comparison to the Slytherins. Nonetheless, why do we see Slytherins as inherently bad while we see these other characters as just a few bad seeds in an otherwise good apple?

But if you ask fans who their most hated character is, most are going to say Umbridge. Umbridge could've killed Harry when she released the Dementors in Little Whinging, but she isn't a serial killer like Voldemort or Bellatrix. I'm not sure where I saw this, but someone said this is because not many of us know a serial killer; however, many of us know an Umbridge. And let's not forget to point out that she's a Slytherin.

And while I'm not here to say that we should hate serial killer Slytherins on the same level as arrogant Gryffindors and Ravenclaws, I still don't think it's fair to villainize Slytherins. I also am not sure where I saw this, but someone once said to imagine this scenario: you're an ambitious eleven-year-old who's excited to attend Hogwarts! You get sorted into Slytherin because you're ambitious, but then everyone outside your House hates you. Why are we villainizing little kids? It's because a lot of them are going to grow up to become bad. However, this is mostly because Slytherin House reinforces blood-purist ideals.

Another thing that the video pointed out is that Slytherin traits often align with traits of the other Houses, except their traits carry a negative connotation. Intelligence and cunningness are very similar traits, except being cunning is seen as a bad thing. Being hard-working and being ambitious often go hand-in-hand, except ambition can cause you to lose yourself. So why even have a Hogwarts house that breeds blood purists, has students that can fit into other Houses, and has been seen as evil for centuries? I'm not exactly sure.

Small Introduction:

Hey there! I have done many iterations of this and honestly I just miss it! I hope you all will take the time to read this over as i spent a lot of time on this and it's not fun when people don't read everything.

Plot:

This does go chronologically through Harry Potter's years at Hogwarts and the struggles he deals with as well as his friends and enemies at school. But not only will we be following Harry Potter but some other characters.

My main character, Catalina Thorne, has gone through quite a lot. Not by any means as much as Harry Potter, The Boy Who Lived. But she has dealt with things her classmates and friends could scarcely ever go through. She had to watch her life unfold as a lie and had to lie about the true death of her family. She has to keep a secret of the family safe. The one person she shouldn't trust her secret to is the son of a death eater. But Catalina, the shy sweet innocent girl that she plays, goes and gets a crush on the worst person she can, Draco Malfoy. Can she manage to keep her family secret when her boyfriend's family is one of the darkest wizarding families? Find out!

Rules:

2. Sexual activities must happen in a private channel and with the proper procedures. The students can only do this if you are in year 5. Younger years are allowed to do hand holding and kissing and the like.

let's start with characters we can pull from the series for ireland's six superior counties, shall we...

antrim = oliver wood

a county full of lads who've never met a spivvy tracksuit they don't think is the height of fashion, and who have a vastly inflated sense of their success at sports.

armagh = tom riddle

armagh has a [deservedly] bloody reputation. he could settle down in the murder triangle. he'd like that.

down = draco malfoy

people who live in co. down really like thinking they're better than the rest of us just because it's easy for them to get to belfast [lads, how's that something to boast about?], so they have to be the series' whiniest flop.

fermanagh = rubeus hagrid

fermanagh is full of docile lads who build things, in my experience.

canonically gorgeous, gorgeous girlies live in this fine county - by which i mean, of course, that i do. we deserve to be represented by the series' most gorgeous girly. and a ginger sweetheart with six siblings [so you know which side of the sectarian divide his parents are on...] would go down a storm with our mams.
