WHEN BLACK-MEN RULED THE WORLD
Some Things You Did Not Know About the Moors of Spain
1. The Spanish occupation by the Moors began in 711 AD when an African army, under their leader Tariq ibn-Ziyad, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from northern Africa and invaded the Iberian peninsula ‘Andalus’.
2. A European scholar sympathetic to the Spaniards remembered the conquest in this way:
a. The reins of the Moors horses were as fire, their faces black as pitch, their eyes shone like burning candles, their horses were swift as leopards and the riders fiercer than a wolf in a sheepfold at night . . . The noble Goths [the German rulers of Spain to whom Roderick belonged] were broken in an hour, quicker than tongue can tell. Oh luckless Spain!
Quoted in Edward Scobie, The Moors and Portugal’s Global Expansion, in Golden Age of the Moor, ed Ivan Van Sertima, US, Transaction Publishers, 1992, p.336
3. The Moors, who ruled Spain for 800 years, introduced new scientific techniques to Europe, such as an astrolabe, a device for measuring the position of the stars and planets. Scientific progress in Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography and Philosophy flourished in Moorish Spain.
4. Basil Davidson, one of the most noted historians recognized and declared that there were no lands at that time (the eighth century) “more admired by its neighbours, or more comfortable to live in, than a rich African civilization which took shape in Spain”
5. At its height, Córdova, the heart of Moorish territory in Spain, was the most modern city in Europe and the world. The streets were well-paved, with raised sidewalks for pedestrians. During the night, ten miles of streets were well illuminated by lamps. This was hundreds of years before there was a paved street in Paris or a street lamp in London. Cordova had 900 public baths – we are told that a poor Moor would go without bread rather than soap while the then
Queen of England never had a bath!
6. The Great Mosque of Córdoba (La Mezquita) is still one of the architectural wonders of the world in spite of later Spanish disfigurements. Its low scarlet and gold roof, supported by 1,000 columns of marble, jasper and and porphyry, was lit by thousands of brass and silver lamps which burned perfumed oil.
7. Education was universal in Moorish Spain, available to all, while in Christian Europe more than ninety-nine percent of the population were illiterate, and even kings could neither read nor write. At that time, Europe had only two universities copied from Spain, the Moors had seventeen great Universities! These were located in Almeria, Cordova, Granada, Juen, Malaga, Seville, and Toledo in which the majority of the lecturers were women.
8. In the tenth and eleventh centuries, public libraries in Europe were non-existent, while Moorish Spain could boast of more than seventy, of which the one in Cordova housed six hundred thousand manuscripts.
9. Over 4,000 Arabic words and Arabic-derived phrases have been absorbed into the Spanish language. Words beginning with “al,” for example, are derived from Arabic. Arabic words such as algebra, alcohol, chemistry, nadir, alkaline, and cipher entered the language. Even words such as checkmate, influenza, typhoon, orange, and cable can be traced back to Arabic origins.
10. The most significant Moorish musician was known as Ziryab, the Blackbird who arrived in Spain in 822. The Moors introduced earliest versions of several instruments, including the Lute or el oud, the guitar or kithara and the Lyre. Ziryab changed the style of eating by breaking meals into separate courses beginning with soup and ending with desserts.
11. The Moors introduced paper to Europe and Arabic numerals, which replaced the clumsy Roman system.
12. The Moors introduced many new crops including the orange, lemon, peach, apricot, fig, sugar cane, dates, ginger and pomegranate as well as saffron, sugar cane, cotton, silk and rice which remain some of Spain’s main products today.
13. The Moorish rulers lived in sumptuous palaces, while the monarchs of Germany, France, and England dwelt in big barns, with no windows and no chimneys, and with only a hole in the roof for the exit of smoke. One such Moorish palace ‘Alhambra’ (literally “the red one”) in Granada is one of Spain’s architectural masterpieces. Alhambra was the seat of Muslim rulers from the 13th century to the end of the 15th century. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
14. It was through Africa that the new knowledge of China, India, and Arabia reached Europe. The Moors brought the Compass from China into Europe.
15. The Moors ruled and occupied Lisbon in Portugal (named “Lashbuna” by the Moors) and the rest of the country until well into the twelfth century. They were finally defeated and driven out by the forces of King Alfonso Henriques. The scene of this battle was the ‘Castle of St. George.’
Beginning in the 12th century and continuing for hundreds of years, the Inquisition was infamous for the severity of its tortures and its persecution of Jews and Muslims. Its worst manifestation was in Spain, where the Spanish Inquisition was a dominant force for more than 200 years, resulting in some 32,000 executions.

THE MOORS By: Dr. Leroy Vaughn, MD, MBA. A Dynamic, Honest and Powerful View of Black History.
During the European Dark Ages, between the 7th and 14th century AD, the Moorish Empire in Spain became one of the world's finest civilizations. General Tarik and his Black Moorish army from Morocco, conquered Spain after a week-long battle with King Roderick in 711 AD. (The word tariff and the Rock of Gibraltar were named after him). They found that Europe, with the assistance of the Catholic Church, had returned almost to complete barbarism. The population was 90% illiterate and had lost all of the civilizing principles that were passed on by the ancient Greeks and Romans. The Moors reintroduced mathematics, medicine, agriculture, and the physical sciences. Arabic figures including the zero and the decimal point replaced the clumsy Roman numerals. As Dr. Van Sertima says, "You can't do higher mathematics with Roman numerals." The Moors introduced agriculture to Europe including cotton, rice, sugar cane, dates, ginger, lemons, and strawberries. They also taught them how to store grain for up to 100 years and built underground grain silos. They established a world-famous silk industry in Spain. The Moorish achievement in hydraulic engineering was outstanding. They constructed an aqueduct, that conveyed water from the mountains to the city through lead pipes from the mountains to the city. They taught them how to mine for minerals on a large scale, including copper, gold, silver, tin, lead, and aluminium. Spain soon became the world centre for high-quality sword blades and shields. Spain was eventually manufacturing up to 12,000 blades and shields per year. Spanish craft and woollen became world famous. The Moorish craftsman also produced world-class glass, pottery, vases, mosaics, and jewellery. The Moors introduced to Europe paved, lighted streets with raised sidewalks for pedestrians, flanked by uninterrupted rows of buildings. Paved and lighted streets did not appear in London or Paris for centuries. They constructed thousands of public markets and mills in each city. Cordova alone had 5,000 of each. They were also introduced to Spain's underwear and bathing with soap. Their public baths numbered in the thousands when bathing in the rest of Europe was frowned upon as a diabolical custom to be avoided by all good Christians. Poor hygiene contributed to the plagues in the rest of Europe. Moorish monarchs dwelled in sumptuous palaces while the crowned heads of England, France, and Germany lived in barns, lacking windows, toilets, and chimneys, with only a hole in the roof as the exit for smoke. Human waste material was thrown in the streets since no bathrooms were present. Education was made mandatory by the Moors, while 90% of Europe was illiterate, including the kings and queens. The Moors introduced public libraries to Europe with 600,000 books in Cordova alone. They established 17 outstanding universities in Spain. Since Africa is a matriarchal society, women were also encouraged to devote themselves to serious study, and it was only in Spain that one could find female doctors, lawyers, and scientists. Moorish schoolteachers knew that the world was round and taught geography from a globe. They produced expert maps with all sea and land routes accurately located with respect to latitude and longitude; while also introducing compasses to Europe. They were such expert shipbuilders that they were able to use their geography expertise to import and export as far away as India and China. It was not by accident that a Moor named Pietro Olonzo Nino was the chief navigator for Christopher Columbus on the flagship Santa Maria. He is said to have argued with Columbus as to who really discovered America. One of the worst mistakes the Moors made was to introduce gunpowder technology from China into Europe because their enemies adopted this weapon and used it to drive them out of Spain. #Africa

The Exes: Trystan & Carolina Edition
Fandom old-timers may remember this template from the summer of 2022 (or was it 2021?); it was created by @jamespotterthefirst as a tool to help us delve into our characters' histories a bit more. Since I plan on expanding my HC for Trystan and Carolina in the near future, so I pulled it out, and once again, it really helped! (Thanks, Bree!). Relationships should never define us, but our actions in and surrounding them say a lot about who we are, and if we let it, they teach us about ourselves. Further, the way people treat us absolutely impacts us, sometimes temporarily, sometimes for good. So, I think exploring helps us get to "know" our characters better.
I highlighted 6 exes for both Trystan and Carolina. I imagine they had many more dalliances, flings, and one-night stands between them, but these are relationships that shaped them in some way - for better or worse - and played a part in bringing them to where they are today as individuals.
I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed creating it.
Dahlia Aceves: Dahila grew up in the same Bronx neighborhood Carolina did, but they only met at 16 because they attended different schools. They became fast friends when Dahlia transferred to Carolina's high school. Dahlia was a bit closed off from others, and while she was generally liked, she didn't have a "clique" or fully fit in. Carolina was similar in those regards, and that drew them to one another. Shortly thereafter, their relationship also became sexual but neither had any desire to be in a relationship, so their friends-with-benefits arrangement began and remained on and off for nearly a decade. Everyone knew there was "something" between them, but no one dared to pry. At times, Dahlia was a fixture at Carolina's place, and she still pops by to see Tommy to this day. While neither woman even envisioned a "serious" relationship together in the future, they both thought (to different degrees) that their arrangement might just go on the way it had indefinitely. (Of course, it didn't). Carolina still sees Dahlia around the neighborhood, and they're friendly but not exactly friends. Dahlia never warmed up to Trystan and she tends to ignore him or give him an attitude when she bumps into him. (FC: Lee Rodriguez)
Marcos Candella: Carolina cannot remember a time when she didn't know Marcos. They played on the streets together as kids, went to school together from K-12, and always had each other's backs. When her father was murdered, Marcos checked in on Carolina daily, dropping off some of her favorite treats prepared especially for her by his mom. Their connection was always platonic, but that changed briefly after HS. Carolina was confused about her sexuality. She always believed she was bisexual, but at that point in time, she had only been with other women and felt like she couldn't fully make that determination unless she gave men a shot, too. Also, she also couldn't understand why she enjoyed sex and comradery with partners but couldn't form a romantic attachment to anyone, so she decided to try dating Marcos. The physical attraction was real, as was their long-established bond of friendship, so it was much more than a meaningless fling. When they reached the 6-month mark, Marcos asked her if she felt they had a future, and she said only as friends. She was happy to see he was relieved about her answer. They are still friends to this day and always have each other's backs. They usually forget this brief part of their life together ever happened. (FC: Ismael Cruz Cordova)
Josh Bowlan: After graduating from Hostos Community College, Carolina began working on her bachelor's degree in criminal justice at John Jay College in Manhattan. It was the first time she was outside of her Bronx bubble on a daily basis, and that changed her life drastically. Her on-again-off-again thing with Dahlia was in an off spot after the two women had a big spat, and Carolina was 100% single when she started at John Jay. Josh was the guy everyone wanted to date, and when he pursued Carolina, focusing all his attention on her, it was a bit intoxicating. Despite a little arrogance, he was a good guy and treated Carolina very well, even though they were far from a perfect match. She was still confused about why she couldn't "feel" the same feelings her friends did when it came to relationships, so she mostly played along because she didn't want to feel different. She liked Josh; she enjoyed his friendship, the intimacy, the sex, but that butterfly, I need you and never want to be without you feeling... it just never came for her. Josh sensed it but tried to ignore it. He assumed it would happen in time. Just shy of their one-year "anniversary," Josh stopped by Carolina's place unexpectedly and found her with another woman. He was furious that she was "cheating" on him; she reminded him that they never once said they were exclusive, so she hadn't done anything wrong, but Josh felt it was just "understood." Hurt, he broke things off, and they only saw each other when their paths crossed at school, where things were contemptuous between them. Most people "sided" with Josh, though Carolina's real friends had her back. (FC: Logan Schroyer)
Kayla (Kai) Sato: After Josh, Carolina was pretty certain she wanted nothing to do with relationships. She and Dahlia started up again; she had many short flings and ONS, but for years, relationships were a no-no, and she ran anytime a lover suggested they take things further. That changed a little when she met Kai at a fundraiser during Pride. The two women had many friends in common and were passionate about similar causes. Carolina was drawn to Kai's creative nature, and Kai found Carolina's practicality settling. They started a passionate affair, and Carolina began to think the infatuation she was feeling could be something more, but for Kai, there was no confusion. She was head-over-heels for Carolina from the start. When she told her that she loved her, Carolina chose to be honest. She explained she cared for her and enjoyed being with her, but love wasn't in the equation, and she wasn't even sure it ever could be. Kai said that was fine. She insisted it would come in time, and until then, she "had enough love for both of us." Carolina told her she couldn't make any promises, but Kai chose to live in denial. A few months later, Kai asked Carolina about becoming exclusive, and when Carolina declined, Kai was furious. Shortly after that, Carolina ended things, knowing they wanted very different things. (FC: Karen Fukuhara)
Raul Montes: Enter Raul. Raul was one of Carolina's father's best friend's sons, and they had known each other forever. He also lived in the Bronx as a child but moved away for college and never came back. Six years her senior, Carolina was only 12 when he moved away, and neither gave each other any thought. When Raul moved back to NYC for a career opportunity, he settled on the Upper West Side of Manhattan but would visit his family in the Bronx several times a month. It was on one of those trips when he spotted Carolina, who was in the middle of a spat with a street vendor who was trying to rip her elderly neighbor off. Raul's interest was piqued, and they began talking. When he asked her on a date, she felt something and accepted. It was only in retrospect that she realized that feeling was solely because Raul had a connection to her father, and that was something she desperately craved. Raul was 30 and wanted to find a wife and settle down... and the thought of that alone terrified Carolina, but then again... he knew her Dad. He loved her Dad. Blinded by this, she wanted to see if she could make it work. By this point, Carolina knew she was demiromantic, and when Raul wouldn't slow down the relationship escalator, she explained this to him. If he wanted things to work, he'd have to be patient. She wasn't going to jump into anything just to satisfy him. Raul didn't even know what demiromantic meant, so he did some "research", but ended up mostly on information that suited his needs. On their next date, he told Carolina that he had looked into it, and she was honestly impressed, thinking he cared enough to try to learn more and understand her better, but those hopes were quickly dashed. He told her his "research" found there was really no such thing as being demiromantic. Obviously, she just had commitment issues stemming from her father's murder. He encouraged her to get more "help" so they could move forward. Not wanting to make a scene in public, Carolina smiled curtly and attempted to change the subject, knowing this was their last date. But when Raul didn't take the hint and kept pushing the issue, Carolina told him he was an ass. He smugly replied, "No, I'm not Carolina. You're just confused." She proceeded to pour a pitcher of sangria over his head as a string of Spanish curses fell from her lips, and she walked out, never to see him again. (FC: Anthony Ramos)
Daphne Miller: After Raul, Carolina went into a serious "fuck relationships, fuck people, I want none of this" period. Sex and her friendships more than satisfied her need for intimacy, and she had no desire for anything more. One of her lovers was Daphne, a fellow detective in the NYPD. They worked well together... on cases and in bed and in life. Their shared passion for their jobs, the NY Yankees, and just living the best life they could brought them closer. Daphne loved Carolina very much and would have pursued more with her, but Carolina was upfront about her wishes, and Daphne respected her boundaries. While they were together, Daphne, who was polyamorous, moved in with another one of her partners, but her affair with Carolina continued as it had before. But when Carolina was forced out of the NYPD, it caused tensions in their relationship, eventually leading to its end. At the time, Carolina felt Daphne was being disloyal to her; in hindsight, she can tell that Daphne was just in a terrible position and trying to make the best of it. They had no contact for a long time after their split, but in time, they became casual friends again, sometimes even going on double dates where Daphne often challenged Trystan to drinking match-ups, which she almost always won. (FC: Kim Delaney)
Irena Baciu: As the heir apparent, Trystan was expected to court women from the finest families in Europe and find a suitable wife as soon as his formal studies ended at seventeen. His lack of interest in doing so was of little consequence to his family. After having a bevy of lovers, both public and in secret, he and Irena came up with a pact. A wealthy heiress from a traditional family herself, she was in a similar situation, so they pretended to court while secretly seeing others as well. It got their family off their backs, and the tabloids got a "darling" couple to focus on. It was a win-win. But, they found that they enjoyed each other's company, so their ruse turned into a no-strings relationship. They both knew it wasn't going to last, but they enjoyed it while it did. They remained friends, and Irena was among those who always believed in Trystan and stood by him after Juliana's death. They're still friends to this day and she totally shipped Trystan and Carolina. (FC: Anastasia Kuchinskaya)
Juliana Georgescu: When Trystan refused to find a suitable bride on his own, his family took matters into their own hands and arranged a political marriage with Juliana. It was good for their families and good for Drakovia. Trystan didn't have the will to fight it; if he was going to be stuck in a loveless marriage, he could do worse than his childhood friend, Juliana. They had known each other their whole lives, and he believed they were still friends. He didn't know that Juli had been having a secret affair with his half-brother, Vasili, and she believed Trystan to be a hedonistic, self-entitled lout. Still, she accepted her fate as his future wife because she felt it would be best for Drakovia and would allow her to enact positive changes in the nation. As time progressed, she got to know Trystan better and discovered he wasn't the man she thought he was. Under Juli's influence, Trystan matured and began to take his responsibilities more seriously, and in time, the two fell madly in love with one another. The engagement was no longer solely a political match, and the two looked forward to marriage, starting a family, and ruling Drakovia as husband and wife until that fateful night. Heartbroken, guilt-ridden, and devastated over his true love's death, Trystan was forced into exile and began a new life in New York. (FC: Isla Fisher)
Daniel Berger: When Trystan's abject depression over Juliana's death morphed into plain old depression, Trystan chose to soothe his pain with a hedonistic lifestyle. He didn't believe he was worthy of love, so living the life of excess expected of a rich playboy suited him well. Daniel attended one of Trystan's lavish parties, and the attraction between the two was instant. Their passionate love affair began that very night, and before long, Daniel had a key to the prince's apartment - with strict rules about what days he could use them. It was all about sex and fun at first, but Daniel was a sensitive soul and could sense the pain Trystan was in. He was there for him, and his tenderness, warmth, and understanding soothed Trystan's mind, body, and soul. Before long, they were exclusive. But Trystan was not out yet, so their love had to remain a secret to most. Just shy of a year after dating, Daniel was offered a lucrative position in Paris. Knowing Trystan couldn't leave the States, Daniel told him he'd turn it down in an instant if they had a future, but Trystan wasn't prepared to be open about his sexuality. Further, Trystan still didn't feel like he deserved real love, and he knew he might not be able to give Daniel what he so richly deserved, so they parted tearfully but amicably and remain close friends to this day. (FC: Chris Salvatore)
Augustine "Gus" Riccio: Trystan let Daniel go, but his loss impacted him more than he had anticipated; he found himself sad and lonely. Most of his nights were spent with a bottle of whisky and memories of Juliana and Daniel; he was beginning to spiral. That's when Gus stepped in. One of Manhattan's best-known party planners, he made himself indispensable to the wealthy prince. Planning one huge bash after another. Their business arrangement quickly turned into a personal one, and Trystan allowed himself to believe it might be real. Eight months after they began dating, Trystan received an envelope containing compromising photos of him and Gus. The sender threatened to out Trystan unless he transferred a large sum of money to an offshore account. Using his connections, Trystan found out that Gus, who was pretending to be outraged by the blackmail, was actually the one behind it. With proof in hand, Trystan tossed him to the curb and threatened to make his life unbearable if he went to the press. (FC: John Mayer)
Alicia Porter: Trystan was done—more than done at this point. Worried about him, his sister Marguerite began dragging him everywhere she went, including plenty of fashion shows. At one such show, he was introduced to Alicia, one of the newer models, and sparks flew. Trystan made it clear, he wasn't looking for love, just a lover and sometime companion, and Alicia was fine with that. They partied, traveled, and slept together; the fun and levity were just what Trystan needed. Six months after they met, Alicia told Trystan she was pregnant and planned to have the child. He wasn't thrilled but wasn't about to back away from his responsibility. He suggested Alicia move in with him, and that they should try to see if their relationship could be more for the sake of the child. But, at minimum, they could raise their child together. Unfortunately for Alicia, her acting skills weren't as good as she believed, and before long, Trystan realized she wasn't pregnant at all. She had been hoping for a lump sum payment to "take care" of the non-existent "situation" and go away. Of course, they were over at that point. (FC: Millie Lewis)
Lucas Bernard: After Gus and Alicia, our poor prince was 150% completely done. He trusted precious few people, but among those few were his good friend Lucas. He met Lucas years before when he first moved to NYC. Lucas was kind enough to show him around and let him know he had a friend in his new hometown. Their friendship had deepened over the years, and Lucas was there for him after Daniel and Gus, and he was there for him again after Alicia. Their long talks led to the two men developing deeper feelings for each other and they embarked on a very close friends-with-benefits relationship. Lucas wasn't interested in settling down with anyone, and Trystan wasn't interested in anything more at that time. While neither expected the relationship to last forever, that doesn't mean they didn't take it seriously. It was filled with trust, kindness, compassion, and love. It was during this period that Trystan found the strength to be open about being bisexual. The two men briefly discussed more of a future together, but neither took the conversation too seriously. After about a year, they decided to remain just friends, but Lucas had helped Trystan heal and realize everyone wasn't to be mistrusted; there were still genuine people in the world. Lucas has since moved to LA, so they don't see each other as often as they might like, but they still consider each other dear friends and will always be a part of each other's lives. He and Carolina get along famously. She teases that she only adores Trystan a little more than Lucas. (FC: Keiynan Lonsdale)
Carolina would gladly save any of her exes - even Raul, who she doesn't care for one bit; she's just not that kind of person. But she took the assignment seriously and limited it to one. She chose Marcos because he's been a friend since they were children and has been there for her even in her darkest days.
Trystan may no longer be with Daniel or Lucas, but he considers them to be two of the most important people in his life, so it was an easy answer (though he wouldn't leave Irena out to die either!)
They both dislike Raul the most of Carolina's exes, while Trystan dislikes Gus and Alicia equally; Carolina gives an edge to Gus.
Carolina is still friendly-ish with Dahlia too, but since she can't stand Trystan, it causes some friction.
Who the family liked the most was a no-brainer for Trystan. After all, they didn't even know about most of his lovers. It was slightly more difficult for Carolina to answer, as she hadn't been terribly serious with any of her exes, and her family didn't get to know them well, but Marcos was beloved by them on his own, so she picked him.
"Happiest with" was also a no-brainer for Trystan. After all, if Juliana hadn't died, he had hoped to spend his life with her. It was a much harder question for Carolina, but she selected Daphne because Daphne loved and respected Carolina for who she was and never pressured her to become or give more.
But Daphne was also Carolina's most difficult break-up. Partially because it was tied into her departure from the NYPD, but mostly because Carolina really liked and cared for Daphne and missed her when it was over.
Trystan selected Gus as his worst break-up because he felt so betrayed. He thought Gus cared for him, and the realization that he was being used all along hit him like a ton of bricks. It made Trystan doubt himself in ways he hadn't before.
Carolina realized none of her exes was particularly funny, but that's OK. Trystan makes up for it in spades. Daphne was sharp as they came, so she was the smartest. Marcos was the kindest to her.
Juliana was easily the funniest and brightest of Trystan's exes. He would say kindest, too, but Daniel had an edge because his love and kindness to Trystan were so selfless. He gave without expectation or agenda from the start, and he was always honest & trusted Trystan. While Juli was very kind, and their love grew, their relationship didn't have all of those elements from the start.
Why Dahlia and Daniel for kiss? They'd both say because they were fucking great kissers. Marry was easy for Trystan, but Carolina was surprised to find her visceral answer was Daphne. Carolina chose Raul for kill, making it clear that she really wouldn't kill him, but maiming didn't sound so bad. Trystan chose Gus and said killing seemed perfectly suitable.
They both meet their exes, who remain friends in their lives. Marcos and Daphne both liked Trystan, and Dahlia tolerates him on occasion when needed. Irena, Daniel, and Lucas all get along well with Carolina, but she and Lucas are the closest of the three.
Thank you for checking this out and if you have any questions about this, feel free to shoot me an ask!

General Pride Parades
By 1971 lesbians were taking public stands and boycotting Pride over the attempted inclusion of males in their definition and spaces. This continued into 1972 where there were attempts to get women on side and fears were still being expressed that lesbians would boycott. Indeed, in 1972 ‘lesbian separatism challenged the gay movement at Christopher Street West’ New York. While the transsexual Angela Keyes Douglas reported regarding the 1972 San Francisco parade that ‘According to statements appearing recently in the gay press, gay women have generally denounced the parade as being “male-oriented” and are not in support of it’. Douglas downplayed and omitted the role of transvestites/transsexuals/drag queens in the lesbians’ decision. We find evidence for this in later reports although the women’s voices have mostly been removed from the historical record. The inclusion of heterosexual males mocking women’s oppression or claiming to be women in a gay pride parade had not always been accepted. Douglas related that ‘In the earlier parades, both in New York and in LA, many gays demanded that transvestites and transexuals not be permitted to participate, and led to the formation of transvestite and transexual militant groups’. Douglas indicated that from the beginning saying no to transvestites and transsexuals had led to threats of violence and armed gangs. Still, transvestites/transsexuals/drag queens ignored requests from pride organisers and Douglas detailed how ‘In New York, although transvestites/transsexuals were NOT permitted to march by parade organizers, Lee Brewster’s Queens Liberation Front marched anyway’.
Douglas dismissed the role of lesbians such as Storme DeLarverie’s in sparking the Stonewall riots and claimed that ‘Ironically, the Stonewall riots were fought mostly by transvestites and transexuals—the “effeminate” types. At one point, queens wrote “butches, where are you now that we need you?” on the sidewalks during the riots. (They come out once a year on June 25…)’. The removal of women from history and re-writing of events had begun swiftly. One way a group is oppressed and exploited is to remove their history from them. Like the current corporatisation of Pride, ‘opposition to the parades [was] also; coming from some elements of gay liberation, who feel that the parades this year co-opt the “spirit” of the Stonewall Rebellion, and are being commercialized’. Pride, under exclusively male direction, was rapidly monetised and the original spirit neglected.
Los Angeles Pride Parade
Nevertheless, Jeanne Cordova, a supporter of transsexual inclusion in lesbianism and feminism, claimed that many women participated while also alleging that numbers were low and women did the work of the parade such as monitoring but did not feature such as on floats. She recounted that at the 1972 parade starting at Christopher Street in Los Angeles, ‘in the assembly area, this year for the first time, there is a large assembly of women gathering. Last year’s parade was marked by a feeling on the part of women of male dominance and so they stayed away from the parade’. She repeated that ‘a very large contingent of women have shown up here, gathered on Hawthorne Blvd’. Again she stated that ‘there’s a hell of a lot more women, five or six times more women’. This repeated focus on the number of women attending may be indicative of the fear of female protest of Pride and the desire to use women as a resource. Natalie Harory, member of the monitors Steering Committee, claimed that “women played a key role in planning the whole demonstration today and organizationally in terms of getting the publicity out and organizing monitors. We leafleted a lot more women’s bars and women’s organizations and gay women’s groups. So I do think we reached out to them more than we did last year.” This is in direct contradiction to what Robert Humphries, co-chairperson of the Parade, had said and the fears articulated by Douglas. Notice how Harory dismissed women’s boycott of the 1971 parade as a matter of them not knowing about it. Still, Cordova noted that there was a ‘significant difference between the men’s participation and the women’s’. Out of the twelve or thirteen floats none of them are sponsored by or participated in by women except for the MCC women’. It appears the women were literally on the side-lines for the Pride Parade. Cordova complained that ‘I hate to be giving such a male dominated report on this parade, but in terms of the parade participators at this point, that’s what’s happening. Most of the women acting as monitors have since moved on’. This seems to contradict her previous statements emphasising the number of women involved and their centrality to the Parade.
San Francisco Pride Parade
A report by the Gay Sunshine Collective indicated that lesbians were involved in disrupting and protesting the San Francisco Parade, rather than just monitoring it. A news release related how ‘San Francisco’s Christopher Street West Parade, held Sunday, June 26, was marred by two incidents of violent conflict between parade organizers and a group of lesbians from San Jose’.
‘The first incident took place before the start of the march near Pine and Montgomery Street in the city’s financial district. The women, members of the San Jose Radical Lesbians, reported that they approached Rev. Raymond Broshears and an unidentified man in a grey suit. Broshears, a G.A.A. member of the parade organizing committee, argued loudly with the women that the sign they were carrying (“Off Prick Power”) was obscene and that they would not be permitted to carry it in the parade’.
In 1972, ‘after [the] verbal altercation, the women walked away. Later, as the women were standing on the sidewalk deciding what to do, Broshears and the grey-suited man came up to them and warned them not to carry their sign in the parade. When they attempted to discuss the matter, the two men grabbed the sign and tore it to shreds, shoving one of the sisters in the process. Broshears then called over four policemen who confirmed his opinion on the sign’s obscenity and told the women they would not be permitted to carry the sign’.
Some men have always supported and aligned with their sex class, not their sisters in the struggle for gay and lesbian rights. Male, gay or straight, policing of women’s speech has continued for over 47 years.
There is an unbroken chain of women, and in particular lesbians, across the decades standing up to male colonisation and intrusion. Just as there are women willing to say ‘no’ to men, there are men willing to try and silence them and commit acts of violence against them. Pride shows how this is not reduced by sexual orientation, gay men belong to the same oppressor class as heterosexual men, just some choose to imagine the world differently and stand side by side with their lesbian sisters.
Reverend Raymond Broshears was not one of these men and always put male interests above others. Broshears, who helped organise the San Francisco Pride march, was co-founder of the Gay Activists Alliance, founder of the Lavender Panthers (an armed gay group) silenced and then assaulted lesbians who opposed transvestites and transsexuals in the march. After the parade one ‘of the lesbians, Chris Nunez, attempted to gain access to the microphone to ask why the sister had been shoved previously. She was prevented access by Broshears in spite of demands by many in the crowd that she be permitted to speak’. A little later Broshears attacked the women.
‘Broshears appeared extremely agitated. He shouted stridently that the women had not participated in the planning stages of the parade and knew nothing of the rules laid down. Suddenly, without provocation he sprang himself forward, launching himself bodily into the midst of the women, striking out furiously in all directions’.
The women, by daring to question the men, had broken the rules laid down by men which justified violence according to a man. Still, ‘members of the crowd rushed forward to pull Broshears and the women apart, but not before two of the sisters had sustained minor bruises’. It comes as no surprise that Broshears decreed ‘no debate’, and that he ‘did not stay for any further discussion but was quickly ushered through the crowd by a little group of henchmen’. Nevertheless, ‘crowd reaction was divided. Some of those present called the women “sick bitches” and accused them of “spoiling our parade”. But in the early 1970s reason still prevailed amongst many and ‘most of the bystanders seemed shocked… called him a “fascist pig”. The lesbians had attended the parade to try and get assistance and support from their Gay brothers but when ‘asked if the parade seemed male-dominated, one women replied, “Oh god, is it ever!”. This domination and control is not something the men would relinquish over the next four decades and appears to be getting even stronger.
Under the leadership of Winston Leyland, The Gay Sunshine Collective who had editorially criticized the parade as sexist and male-chauvinist in their June issue released a statement supporting the lesbians. They asked if the sexism and chauvinism of the ‘gay movement and the rank and file [could have] been more apparent than in this incident’? They stated that ‘the male chauvinism demonstrated by the parade organizers and by many participants is too obvious to require detailed analysis’. The gay collective were ‘disgusted by the Rev. Broshears’ conduct and would remind him that all the parades in the world will produce no sexual liberation as long as men persist in this sort of behavior toward women’. This is what it looks like when gay brothers stand with their lesbian sisters. The Gay Sunshine Collective asserted that they had ‘long believed that the parade was dominated by a bankrupt “leadership” thoroughly out of touch with its constituency. This physical assault on gay sisters confirms our opinion’. They were scathing of Broshears who they claimed ‘reminds us of a character in Oscar Wilde’s play Lady Windermere’s Fan, of whom another character remarks, ‘He thinks like a Tory and talks like a Radical, and that’s so important nowadays’. As early as 1972 some were noticing that traditional, institutional values were being presented as change. The Gay Sunshine Collective went so far as to ‘call upon the sponsoring organizations to repudiate Broshears’ sexist behavior (as well as to examine their own behavior toward women) and to issue an immediate apology to the San Jose sisters’. The Gay Sunshine Collective could imagine the state that we are in now, with lesbians being commonly attacked and excluded, the corporatization of Pride, and they called ‘upon our gay sisters and brothers to stop acquiescing in the state of affairs which presently exists in the Bay Area gay liberation struggle. If we continue to remain passive, we deserve to be under the leadership of this bunch of male-chauvinist Machiavellians with their paper organizations and authoritarian neuroses.”

@guttcrson said: you’re gonna be real happy you didn’t kill me.
finger on the trigger, the agent stared down the man standing across the street from him, closing the distance. “the fuck does that mean?” he barked, lifting his finger and pointing down the muzzle as he saw a flash of the man’s badge. the agent dropped his arm and concealed his weapon into his back pocket, pressing the safety on.
while unease sat in cordova’s bones, there was something in the man’s behavior that told him that he wasn’t a criminal at least - and at the moment, that was enough for the agent to relax. slightly.
exhaling a deep breath, willing the adrenaline to die out, cordova got his breath regulated just enough for one question: “who the hell are you?”

bexley thorn - witch ( the vampire diaries oc )
woah! was that BEXLEY THORN walking down main street? i heard they’re not actually from ivy cove but come from THE VAMPIRE DIARIES (OC). they’re 30 and live in CORDOVA GROVE but watch out because they can be ERRATIC + MEEK but are actually BENEVOLENT + ECCENTRIC. despite them HAVING memories, you’ll always think of HANDS THAT CONSTANTLY TREMBLE, DARK SMUDGED EYESHADOW FROM THE NIGHT BEFORE, TENSING AT THE SMALLEST SOUNDS, AN AWKWARD LAUGH PAIRED WITH A NERVOUS SMILE, when imagining them. / imogen poots, she/her
backstory:
bexley was once a witch born into a prominent coven, and her life wasn't much complicated other than the usual antics of the supernatural world. well, that was until a certain hybrid entered into her life. she loathes to admit it, but somehow she fell for him instantly. perhaps they became too close far too quickly, because she suddenly found herself devoted to finding a way to break the sire bond that plagued him. she was always a talented witch, strong and lethal in her own ways, but that sort of magic was simply out of her league. in a moment of weakness, she turned to magic that was heavily forbidden within her coven, attempting such magic nearly came at the price of her own life -- once her coven had found her and managed to save her, they promptly became aware of what she had done. they had no choice but to remove her completely from their coven -- with the threat of grave consequences if she ever tried to turn. not only had she lost her coven while completely failing to get the answers she was so desperately seeking -- the hybrid that started this whole ordeal had simply vanished. the last words he ever said to her was the promise of returning to her within a week...only to never to return as her life burned down around her.
ive cove:
life was simple here, comfortable even. she had a decent job as a bartender, learning the trade of mixology rather quickly to her surprise, and despite her nervous demeanor, speaking of the patrons of the bar wasn't so bad. in fact, at times she found herself enjoying it. however, as the fates had decided to turn her life upside down, she was suddenly haunted by the memories of the life she really lived. the memories were beyond painful -- but the worst of it all, despite her memories coming back crystal clear...her magic has not yet to return. something the witch is certain that her ancestors are doing to punish her for her betrayal.

Canada Place is a building situated on the Burrard Inlet in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is home to the Vancouver Convention Centre, the Pan Pacific Vancouver Hotel, the Vancouver World Trade Centre, and the virtual flight ride FlyOver Canada. The building's exterior is covered by fabric roofs resembling sails. It is also the main cruise ship passenger terminal for the region, where cruises to Alaska originate. The building was designed by architects Zeidler Roberts Partnership in joint venture with Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership and DA Architects + Planners.
Canada Place is accessed via West Cordova Street and near Waterfront Station, a major transit hub with SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express connections.
The structure was expanded in 2001 to accommodate another cruise ship berth. During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada Place served as the Main Press Centre.
Canada Place was built on the land which was originally the Canadian Pacific Railway's Pier B–C. Built in 1927, its primary purpose was to serve CPR and other shipping lines trading across the Pacific Ocean.
In 1978 Federal, Provincial and Municipal governments commenced planning for development of convention, cruise ship and hotel facilities. Four years later, the Government of Canada created a crown corporation, the Canada Harbour Place Corporation (known as Canada Place Corporation until 2012), to develop the Canada Place project on the Pier B–C site. Construction began when Queen Elizabeth II arrived on the Royal Yacht Britannia with Pierre Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada and William R. Bennett, Premier of BC to initiate the first concrete pour.
During Expo 86, the Canada Pavilion at Canada Place was opened by Prince Charles and Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister of Canada. Among the largest and most elaborate pavilions presented by any nation at any World's Fair, the Canada Pavilion hosted more than 5 million visitors prior to the October 13, 1986 closing date.
Canada Place Corporation (CPC), a Crown agent, continues to act as the coordinating landlord for Canada Place facilities.

THE MOORS
They produced expert maps with all sea and land routes accurately located concerning latitude and longitude; while also introducing compasses to Europe.
Europe then took the 700 years of civilization and education re-taught to them by the Moors and used this knowledge to attack Africa. While the Moors were re-civilizing Europe, great empires were thriving in Western Africa and frequently traded with the Moors.
These included the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, which prospered between 700 AD and 1600 AD. Africa was not a dark continent awaiting European civilization. In fact, Black African Egyptians and Black African Moors are credited with civilizing Europe."

Shenanigans, Bullshit, and Fuckery
I was supposed to have today off.
I want to make this clear: I was not on the schedule for today.
So let's freezeframe rewind for context.
(yes the clock is going forward no i do not care it's a clock my point is made)
Due to All Companies Requiring Infinite Growth, payroll is Inevitably Cut. My employers had the absolutely fucking brilliant idea that the best way to save on payroll is to have one store lead work for two stores. Everyone knows this is stupid and it's the B stores who suffer the most. Guess who works at a B store.
ANYWAY. We actually did have a good lead, who put as much care into us as she did her A store. So of course they took her away in order to save on mileage because fuck us i guess, never mind that both stores were thriving.
Our current lead is okay? But her A store is at a mall, which is very different from a strip. Also she's temporary. Three months tops. So everyone at my store is pissed because what the shit is this?
Bullshit happened, ThisIsFine.jpg, but one of the results is that two SLs and an ASL are all quitting. At the same time. And in the lead to that, our ASL is calling out every time she has to work with the temp lead. Which gives me hours but also i was supposed to be off todaaaaay.
But.
TODAY.
Today was a double-whammy in terms of street dates: Both SW Jedi Survivor and the Tears of the Kingdom OLED dropped. And ASL calls out, lelaving SL to call me in but also be fucking flustered. And so, Mistakes Were Made, in the key of "accidentally handing Deluxe editions to people who preordered the standard edition." I was one such lucky person but, you know, it's my fucking store also i'm not playing Jedi Survivor this year. So SL nearly has a breakdown because that's fucking bad, and she knows it's on her, because nobody said anything and I didn't notice until we discovered our shortage.
Luckily for us, a different store got two dozen extra deluxe editions. BEtween the one i still have unopened andtheir extras, we have enough to cover our remaining preorders. SO. Guess who gets to drive to work, clock in, and then immediately drive to Rancho Cordova tomorrow?
shoulda let us keep dare you penny-pinching fucks.
