Gaz is a fish person.
His collection was truly impressive before he joined the SAS and now that he's in the 141 with a semi permanent home base he has a few tanks in his room(2 planted 10gals and a blackwater 5gal, for a small community tank, a copper plakat Betta, and a mustard gas Betta).
When Price finds out about the fish he gets Gaz a goldfish(a little calico from the local Petco/smart/whatever they have in that barbaric country) and Gaz dies inside while trying to gently explain just how big of a space goldfish need to his CO (also the fact that it's a Coldwater fish and that he values the plants in his tanks thank you). He puts her in a bowl for the time being until he can return her in the morning but he wakes up to an exhausted Price telling him to go the rec room. Lo and behold there is a brand new 75 gallon tank with a huge canister filter and the highest quality Goldfish pellets money can buy.
Eventually Gaz gets three more goldfish for the 75 gallon in the rec room(once it's cycled and he's sat the team down to explain the nitrogen cycle, proper maintenance and "for the love of God let me add any fish").
An old oranda that someone was looking to re-home named Cap.
A ryukin with a ridiculously tall fin named Dawn.
And a giant black moor named Spooky.
The little calico? Her name is Monster.

Referring to your recent post, would love to see some of the fun things you’ve bought! You have the best taste 😊
Aw thank you.
So the main categories of things have been home stuff and fashion stuff. I do have a tag (of course) but haven't posted everything so to summarize...
Home stuff
Living room: The swan table (an icon, a queen, the inspiration for the room), the insane green velvet chair (we love her, gotta keep it eclectic), snake rug (hiss hiss), a fundamentally impractical sofa (Ikea, concessions had to be made somewhere. I'm going to restuff to make it look more fluffy and expensive). I'm keeping my vintage curio cabinet, 1960's referencing 30's circular bar cart, black arched lamp, and big rubber plant. The inspiration is somewhere between this 1930's Thorne miniature room and hummusbird. I need some paintings, a little table for under the window to display a great vase (got this one in ivory, tbc if it's the right size), and some big new throw pillows (I'm thinking dusky pink). Oh also I'm getting a fish to go in the bookcase (I wanted a white Betta but my dad has said that's a bad idea and suggested a gold fish instead).
Kitchen: An oval marble topped cast iron bistro style table. Keeping my black bistro chairs (2x) and will also use 2 of my armless ghost chairs (like these). Likely to get a small floating island to get a little more counter space. Also bought an insane copper kettle ala my man Rajiv recently.
Main bedroom: I've got a new headboard for my bed (this one), I'm getting rid of the wardrobe in there (using the one in the 2nd bedroom) and will replace it with a vintage dressing table and mirror (I do like this one but would rather not spend that given... everything else) to display my great great grandmother's silver mirror, brush, etc. Need some big Euro shams and perpetually looking for a navy woven blanket that's big enough (I want it like, almost duvet sized).
2nd bedroom: Currently is an office / video game room, turning into a proper 2nd bed. I'll use my meh existing bed, need bedside tables, maybe a new desk chair.
Fashion stuff
It's been a lot of big skirts (my love the Prada one, a really full white canvas-y one, this crazy pink one, a beige cashmere Theory one), a set of heavy ribbed tops with high necks in black and browns (for autumn, this is one of them), a few cropped cardigans (can't find any specific ones that I've bought right now, but short enough to wear with the skirts), a totally sheer cream colored top (that is proving surprisingly versatile already), two cheap Zara wrap vests that I'm waiting to arrive (one in cream and one in black, we'll see the quality when they get here), a Victorian gold charm bracelet (+ a charm of a monkey holding a pearl), a pair of really gorgeous silver and mother pearl earrings from the 50s, some rag and bone soft leather mules, some baby blue Mary Janes, and a set of tiny kitten heels that I really like but am not sure I'm keeping (they're a little narrow but I think I could stretch them). I think there's more but if I think too much about it I'll be stressed (rip my budget). Pro tip: Laura Riley has an incredible fashion newsletter that rounds up what's new and what's on sale -- I've gotten almost everything I've bought on 50%+ off.

06/05/24 // Something nice. I (impulse) bought two 3D printed fidget toys from a garden centre. I was going to go for a walk with my parents but it was raining so we went there instead. An axolotl (yes blue is hardly accurate but it was the only colour) and a shiny copper snake (it has the proportions of an earthworm but oh well, I love how it shimmers). The garden centre had both a reptile shop and an aquatics shop where I saw amongst other things live axolotls and one of the most beautiful shimmery betta fish I have ever come across (described as iron ingot). I didn’t take pictures because I didn’t have my phone.

Looking for fish recommendations for a somewhat experienced beginner
I've had a five gallon for a few years now that's currently sitting empty, save for the live plants. I'm moving in two days and after we get settled, I'm gonna take the plants, décor, filter media, and some of the gravel from the five gallon and use that to start a ten gallon. I've only ever owned bettas (to pretty good success), since that's pretty much all that can live in a five gallon lol. Bettas are nice but it's hard to find small-finned individuals in stores (which is kind of necessary for their QOL because the filter for that tank is fairly strong :c) and I don't want to deal with ordering fish in the mail.
ANYWAY that's not my point.
TL;DR: I've got a java fern and an anubias nana (iirc, it's a small anubias in any case) that need a new home. I want to branch out beyond keeping a betta. What fish should I look at?
I haven't had the chance to test the water at the new place myself but I did find these data online for the area:
Water hardness: 180-200 mg/L
Copper concentration: 0.07 ppm or less
Unfortunately I couldn't find a pH value anywhere, so for now let's pretend pH isn't an issue. I can narrow down people's recommendations after I figure that out.
P.S. If I get a school of something (and therefore probably a breeding population), am I supposed to do any population control? Or will the population naturally find a balance?
(Also, I'd of course be buying more plants, I'd just feel really bad if I threw out the ones I already have)

A New Journey
Y'all, I'm so excited to start my journey in the world of freshwater aquariums and aqua scaping! I started out with a 5 gallon tank with some Neon Tetras when I was a kid, then grew out of it for several years, and now I'm getting back into it. I have been wanting a Betta for a while now and was in the process of budgeting for a 10 gallon aquarium setup with live plants and everything when my fiancés great aunt was getting rid of her 5 and 10 gallon tanks and everything that came with them! I had hit the jackpot!
So I got everything back to my house and set up (with the help of my wonderful fiancé) and high tailed it to the nearest pet store! I went to PetSmart in our town and was looking at all of the Bettas. I had done so much research on them from water temp to food source and decided what variety of Betta I was looking for.
I knew I wanted to have a community tank and first thing I wanted to do was pick put my Betta and let him decide who he wanted to live with rather than picking out some fish and him accidentally eating all of them 🙄. Anyway, I'm looking at all of the Bettas in the store and this one catches my eye. He's red, white and black with the most beautiful pattern on him. I look at his ID on the cup and he's a Copper Koi Betta! He's following me around and interacting with my fingers, so I pick him up and take him around the store.
I'm FALLING for this Betta fish and I name him Jeffery (yes after Jeffery Dahmer, I have a messed up sense of humor). I take Jeffery up to some of the other community fish and he's flaring his fins, buffing out, and making himself look like a big bad fishy 🥰. I get some Platinum Guppies for him and take everyone home. I honestly thought he was going to kill the guppies, but he eventually took a liking to them and just chased them around for fun.
Now, Jeffery and the Guppies sit on my desk while I'm doing school work and watch me while I study my butt off for Finals Week.
Join me, Jeffery and my Guppies on our journey through this thing called aquatic life!

fish update:
shrimp tank is thriving after the move. i drained about half the water out into a bucket with a tight lid, and drove bucket and tank over to my new house. both the hanging and sponge filters were sitting in tank water. set the tank down, poured the bucket water back in, and plugged in filters + lights (no heater in this tank). i've seen multiple amanos and the ghost shrimp, and no pinkish corpses so i think we still have everyone! BEAUTIFUL copper and bronze ramshorns.
i moved colgate toothpaste's tank the same way. he's still very active, eats, pesters his snails, etc. manicured his plants to give him more wiggle room. his fins are growing back well from when he tore them a while ago. metallic brown ramshorns.
steve rogers is...well. he got fin rot, and i started treating him, but i feel guilty i didn't notice fast enough bc he lost a bit of his tail fins :( he swims around more now, he seems more responsive to his environment. however he's having some kind of buoyancy issue where he can't swim downward much. he doesn't *appear* bloated, but i'm hesitant to cut back on food bc he seems to have pepped up after eating more. gonna buy some daphnia and soak it in garlic guard and cross my fingers. i think i culled the ramshorns??? there are only bladder snails and a nerite in this tank.
clive barker is SOOOO lively!!! i swear i saw him trying to blow bubbles earlier. he's a tiny lil man but he loves flaring at his ramshorn snails for no reason. always poking his head around every corner of the tank, coloring looks great, definitely recovered from the fungal infection he had earlier in the year. ramshorns are brown + heavily dappled with white.
haven't been as attentive to my 10 gal fish lately. i maintain the tank, obvi, but i haven't kept up with the behavioral quirks of the platies and endlers like i do with the bettas. i have 2 platies and 4 endlers now; one day one of the yellow endlers disappeared and i never found the body. :/ tiny lil SOBs. the ramshorns in this one are bronze-brown, some with spots.
everyone is the 29 gal is healthy and happy!! the cories and b.n. pleco are chubby and frisky, ember tetras are good, danios are zippy and nippy, but their attention is divided between all 6 tetras, and there's a lovely understory of cryptocorynes and hygrophila for hiding spots. again i haven't kept up with the fertilizer schedule so i lost some tiger lotus + sword leaves, and i've given up on getting the lloydiella to look right. the impeller in the 90 dollar u.v. HOB filter is jacked up and i don't have the patience to fix it rn so i got a penguin filter on sale. when i have the energy after it's moved i need to do a deep clean of the plants cause the dwarf hygro is choking out everything else. shimmery brown with dark brown spots re: ramshorns? there aren't as many as you'd think; my theory is the rabbit snails have a monopoly on snail food supply, and there's also 6 bottom feeding fish to consider.

What in the name a' hell did I stumble-feck my way into this time.
Anyway have a palate-cleanser:
>It's LEMMIGAN! The boy looms large at his full size, fully 40' from snoot to tail. Somewhere between a worm on a string, a dragon, and a betta-fish, Lemmigan's a six-legged work of art, even among his own extinct kind. An ancient forebear breed of his own kind, he strikes a regal figure, with golden eyes and flickering-white pupils, as if lighting itself was trapped in his gaze. His mouth tapers off, a bit like a crocodile, with short, sharp teeth that could crack nearly any shell, wrapped in a soft sort of hide that seamlessly gives way to a copper-blonde mane of wild hair, the exact same color of his mother- Merc.
>The flowing and sea-salted dried mane tapers off and runs the length of his noodly body, so thick that Merc's lanky legs couldn't hope to fully close around it. There's a gap, right behind the end of Lemmigan's mane, where a custom saddle's been fitted to Lemmigan's body, equipped with Saddlebags and stirrups, but no reigns; Mercury St. Germain Nuage's familiar needs no such guidance.
>And beyond the saddle emerges the first Lemmigan's spines, jagged, natural crystals the color of sandy mud, with a deep yellow hue within, offset by a white inner light. They're long, as long as a human arm or leg, and emerge from the thin strip of Lemmigan's mane as if they'd burst forth like a petrified strike of lightning. His scales are a burnished bronze color, somewhat like sand, but too-metallic and edged with a natural blackness that just looks dangerous to be hit by. Patterned like a betta-fish's scales, but as wide as a human hand and as sharp and hard as steel blade, and almost shiny-smooth from his time hunting underwater caves and burrows.
>Two PAIRS of thick shoulders are the anchor points for the harness, and four fore-legs, the kind that could easily push down any of the towering jungle trees behind him, are posed with tension, two bent inward and two flexing up and outwards in a sort of body builder's pose. Each paw is a terrifying thing, three massive digits with a pair of articulate thumbs on each side, all of them equiped with muddy-brown talons, made white and scuffed at the tips from every stone and bone Lemmigan's scraped them over; each talon is nearly three or four inches long, and thick enough to not just cut a heart out, but squish it in the process.
>At the other end, before a nearly fifteen-foot long tail gives stops producing spines, a pair of powerful hindlegs, identical to Lemmigan's forelegs, are poised, betraying a tension that his silly pose tries to hide. Lemmigan's tail is curled into a wide circle around his back, a fully-articulate thing that ends in a wild, puffy burst of more copper-blonde hair. In the oppressive heat of the jungle depression, though, the tail-tuft hangs limply, revealing a single, supremely-sharp spike, like his own spines in composition, but this one's clearly a stinger.

i messed up
I named a bunch of the betta fish at work and now I'm sad whenever one of the ones I've named gets taken home
Like I'm happy because the conditions in the pet store are terrible.
But only my favorites have names
The prettiest ones
They're my babies :(
Today two of them got taken home: Penny, who got his name because he looks like oxidizing copper, and Gabriel. We have three white bettas so I named them after the three archangels. Gabriel had a slightly pink hue, Michael had a slightly blue hue, and Lucifer had a slightly yellow hue. But they were all white.
My absolute favorite who I hope gets a home but I'm also going to be crying when he gets adopted is Aurora. He's light pink and blue, and it reminded me of sleeping beauty so I named him aurora.
My second favorite is Andromeda. He's mostly black, but with red and royal blue on his fins. It looks a bit like a galaxy, hence the name. I was thinking about using Milky Way but I liked Andromeda better
The third is Firecracker: he's red and blue and it reminded me of Firecracker's costume in The Boys
Oil Spill is really unique. He looks kinda grey/brown but in the light you can see a whole rainbow of colours and he's super pretty
X-Ray is all black but his fins are tipped with a bright blue and he has a little of the same blue on his body
Sal is a bright salmon color
December and Holly are both silver with red fins, but Holly has a little more red on his body
Crowley, who also was adopted, was black and red
there's one that's pink and royal blue with red tipped fins. I haven't thought of a name for him yet, but he's really pretty

And last pet post I swear 😂
☹️ but my indoor corydora’s had ich go through the tank and I lost copper and panda (but panda I think was genetic he’s had swim bladder issues sinc with got him sadly and never reached full size) but everything is all good now I treated them for two months straight and was extremely careful but I alternated meds/herbal/salt baths and at the end of it I scrubbed out the tank and replaced everything with rock and got a few new corydoras (three still waiting for pick up I try to do rescues) since my remaining three were depressed. They’ve since perked up. I also replaced the rock and soaked the decor in salt water at 120 degrees.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also during this whole ordeal with my indoor fish I ended up taking in a betta that wasn’t wanted. Kids got bored. So I set him up his own tank. But since I started treating him with fin repair and aintibiotics hes gotten a lot better and is more confident. I named him Takeda (Tauk-E-da) after a famous Japanese samurai cause of his little attitude. The first and second pics are then vs now (the then picture is after a week of having him when he started getting his color back cause he was mostly sickly white and pink he had ammonia burns and fin rot) I wasn’t sure if he’d make it at first and I hope this doesn’t sound cold but I didn’t want to get to attached cause I take it hard with any pet death. The third picture cause the loaded back wards is him coming up to visit and the fourth picture of him flaring is what he used to do when I got him, he’d flare and hide but now he’s out of hiding all the time and I haven’t seen him flare since.

Oh, don't worry, friend! I always love getting asks from you!! Omg, that's a whole saga with your fish! I'm sorry for your losses, but I'm glad there are new fish buddies for you to love! You've put a lot of love and care into those little bbs, I can tell!
OOOOHHH look at that beautiful betta!! His coloration is absolutely stunning! 😍💖💜💙 I had a betta when I was growing up that was a mid-to-deep blue sort of color. I love the fade to pink in this little guy, though!! What a cutie pie!!!
