Screen-free Saturday
Blocked off Saturday until 4:00 as a screen-free zone. Very relaxing. I did productive home things and napped. I made mocha cinnamon ice cream and strawberry ice cream, plus stacks of wild blueberry buttermilk/buckwheat pancakes for the freezer. I am still living off the meals I prepped before surgery, but think that making more dim sum dinners would be nice. Might do that tomorrow.
The nurse has come, been, and gone with the incision closing well from the inside out. It's scary. All of the incisions went right to my left lung - camera, operating tool, and drain tube. If the infection had not encapsulated then broke open in the right direction, I would have been in serious trouble. As it is, the CT scan from my ER visit noted plural effusion - that the chest tube was supposed to prevent.
I think screen-free Sunday could be a thing.

we (wife and I) started up a huge pot of barbacoa this morning, still tweaking the recipe so we doubled the lime juice. I love how it adds a nice zest to it. Fresh tasting? I dunno how to describe it. But now we wait 6-8 hours while it percolates. gonna try to make some quesabirras i think once it's done

Art haul! And by that I mean I went to my parents house and took some paintings my great grandmother did lol

(the only ones with dates are the big square one 1949 and the small middle pink flowers one 1953). My favorites are the oval one and the two smaller framed ones. Unclear how I feel about the unframed ones, I'm not as big on the colors?
Also, my mother has gotten rid of most of her own old art because she painted them as a moody teenager obsessed with The Doors and says they "aren't her anymore" but I still like them
This one is called The Highwayman and she painted it on a headboard

Help me figure out how to plan my new desk area.
I have:
a corner desk that I intend to use for my gaming computer and, you know, everything that is fun and free time related such as writing, streaming stuff and chatting with you lovely people;
an adjustable sit/stand desk that I bought specifically for work. I don't need to stand for things other than work, but I don't stand all the time (I just like having the option)
These two desk are going to be in the same corner of my room, with my chair between so I can swivel around when swapping tasks. They do not fit next to each other, because one would end up sticking out and blocking the way into the room. So one of the desks won't be facing a wall but rather the passage into the room.
Below is a crude drawing of the two options for how to place these desk.
Option one has the corner desk facing the wall, and the work desk facing the passage. Advantages of this is that the work desk has considerably less cables. Basically the printer and the laptop charger and eventually a second screen and everything else is wireless, so when coming through the passage I wouldn't see a mess of cables. The disadvantages would be that if the desk was in standing position, it might feel too tall if someone else comes through the passage,
Option two has the corner desk facing the passage, and the work desk facing the wall. Advantages/disadvantages of this are basically the opposite of option one.
The corner when empty:

So, which would you do?
Options that are not options:
putting the desks elsewhere
keeping it all on the same desk
getting another desk

The upper part of my stairs used to have all the maps that came with TES games framed and hung up. But I have never played any TES games besides Skyrim and I don’t really like them. They were put up by my ex and I just hadn’t taken them down yet.
So I’ve been finding maps for things I DO like and swapping them out! All the maps I got are for book series so I put the books up too! And I also put up a nice wallpaper accent to make the whole thing less beige!
Anyway my slow transformation of my home is ever continuing and I’m loving every little change.

Saturday!
I had my main thyroid cyst closed yesterday and today it looks as if someone tried to strangle me. I go back in a month for an ultra sound to make sure it's staying closed. The fluid and a scraping of the walls of the cyst was also done for biopsies. It's nothing alarming, I have had these cysts and nodules before, but it's as if cancer treatment put the pedal to the medal. The endocrinologist said that you can't zap the human body with radiation, even a refined and targeted bean of radiation, without aftereffects.
Today is for cooking, and my body wants Autumn Food. I managed to get some duck legs, actual mutton (!), and other goodies for my Big Cook. I like to make big batches, then freeze. I have brisket, duck, pork shoulder, and am smoking my first batches of elk sausage. A lot of people advocate uncured meats but here's the problem with that.
The curing of meat is to prevent the growth of organisms in the meat such as botulinum. Curing meat is a practice that goes back to Mesopotamian civilization, and possibly long before. Mesopotamians preserved meat in salt and sesame oil. Salt draws out the moisture and the bacteria with it. If you remember biology lab in junior high, you remember what happens to cells when you salt them. Nitrites can be naturally occurring, so something like Eco-Cure needs to be handy unless you want to play Russian roulette with botulism. It's a one-to-one substitute for Prague Powder #1 - that's the stuff that makes ham and Spam pink.

In kitty news, I have found a new hack! All the little catnip toys get lost under furniture, and regular catnip gets all over the place. I used to use up unmatched socks, but those get gross with cat drool. So, I had a batch of wool laundry balls - extras. I ordered some that never got here, so I cancelled the order and bought from another source. What shows up six weeks later?
Now I have twelve big felted wool balls, and the babies were fascinated. Why? Lanolin. It makes them go full baby, and some even nurse because the scent reminds them of mama cat. I tried lanolin therapy with Dusty the Anxiety Kitty and it worked really well - she was weaned off the anxiety meds.
Lanolin and catnip spray have proven to be a natural! The balls are too big to disappear under everything and the girls love them. Three are coated with a little lanolin, the other three get a spray of catnip. Happy kitties.
