I know nobody cares, but...
Marvel picked MY fucking short story, "Lost Cause," to be the official excerpt for the updated announcement of the Captain America: The Shield of Sam Wilson anthology.
No, really, look: https://www.marvel.com/articles/culture-lifestyle/captain-america-the-shield-of-sam-wilson-features-original-short-stories-excerpt-cover
Tumblr media
I'm fucking shocked they picked mine. What a tremendous honor to represent our boy. <3
On the off chance someone cares, info below!
Tumblr media
As a Black man in America, Sam Wilson knows he has to be twice as good to get half as much credit. He must be a paragon of virtue for a nation that has mixed feelings towards him. In these thirteen brand-new stories, the all-new Captain America must thwart an insurrectionist plot, travel back in time, foil a racist conspiracy, and save the world over and over again.
As the Falcon, Sam Wilson was the first African American super hero in mainstream comic books. Sam’s trials and tribulations reflect the struggles many Black Americans go through today, as Sam balances fighting supervillains and saving the world with the difficulties of being the first Black Captain America. This action-packed anthology inspired by the Marvel comic book universe, will see Sam team up with familiar friends like Steve Rogers, Redwing and Nomad, while fighting HYDRA, Sabretooth, Kingpin, and other infamous villains.
These are stories of death-defying courage, Black love and self-discovery. These are the stories of a super hero learning what it means to be a symbol. These are the stories of Sam Wilson.
Release date: January 14, 2025
Pre-order now in ebook, hardcover, or audiobook: https://www.amazon.com/Captain-America-Shield-Sam-Wilson/dp/1803363878
And can I pretty please get some notes? PWEASE? Struggling indie black author here, just saying.

if you want people to get into the canon comics and lead everyone away from fanon misinterpretation (which is a losing battle because there will ALWAYS be this) then why not be helpful instead of being a dick about it 🤨
the comics are hard to get into because it's hard to know where to start, and there's so much content that people are able to fill themselves in by reading fanfic or watching something on tiktok or seeing posts about it on here. perhaps instead of telling people they're stupid for not realizing your favorite character is being mishandled by others, you could write up a list of your favorite comics and/or how, if you could read them for the first time again, you would order your favorite comics to get the best reading experience. and also write your own fanfiction and draw your own fanart or make a passionate post, answer questions politely

I can't believe i'm saying this, but modern DC does have one small leg up over Marvel: they have imprints for all the different age groups. DC has a middle grade imprint, which significantly helped me make my reading list. Because all I want out of modern comics are the silly ones. The middle grade stuff. The stuff that doesn't take itself too seriously. Because if you're not going to have the fantastic prose of the 60s, 70s and 80s, then you don't deserve serious storylines. Serious stories deserve to feel serious. They deserve to feel like novels.
But humour? Humour can be light and short on words. So humour is the only genre that works in the modern format. So I need directions to Marvel's humour stuff. I can't look up an imprint, so i'm turning the question over to everyone on here. What marvel stuff from at least 2010 onwards (maybe the 2000s and 90s too) is fun and silly enough to meet my classifications? I'm talking stuff like Tiny Titans, all the Batman tv show tie-in comics, the DC Zoom imprint stuff, etc. What is there in that ballpark at Marvel?

I would curse the name of Gerard Way for getting me into the hell that is understanding the basic chronological order of comic books but I can’t pretend it wasn’t a canon event

howard the duck (1976) #10
#coming for spider-man's life i see#sci talks comics#howard the duck#spider-man#yes. i am reading the entirety of howard the duck comic canon from the beginning thank you for asking.#i had read the most recent two howard the duck series and i enjoyed them but now? reading the classic stuff??#dear god the new stuff doesn't hold a candle.#sighs. howard is just like every marvel character. lost his edge.#marvel stop forgetting the entire point of your characters in order to babify them to appeal to wider audiences#seeing how counter-consumerist the early howard books are and how cynical and honest the writer is..#it's a little heartbreaking what he's become#here i was thinking he was just a funny duck.#kind of sad that howard's entire existence now is reduced to “remember when we wrote about a talking duck?”#“hheeheheahahahohoh what a funny thing that was. a talking duck. could you imagine! what a silly time that was.”#“what an embarrassing time for marvel”-– shut UUP this is so interesting and sincere. that duck is really interesting and sincere.#i love you howard.#i even like your weird movie.#fun fact: howard the duck was one of the first movies my dad ever watched in english#and it was this movie that he always tried to describe and try to find because he loved it but he didn't remember the name#he said it's a movie about a duck who gets stuck in the human world#and eventually i got into marvel and was like wait. howard the duck? is the movie howard the duck???#he loves that movie. well. the first half of it. and me too i also love the first half of that movie.#love you howard!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just as god intended right on my friend you're doing everything right and don't let anyone tell you otherwise
#snap chats#the key to reading comic books isnt to read them in order or even all of them just the ones you like#until eventually someone tells you some wack as hell fact about an issue and then you go read that one#many such cases why do you think i picked up onslaught revelation. cause that fucker is back#why do you think i picked up wolverine number 3 because my beautiful wife is hammered for two pages in it#brother was just talkin to me casually bout onslaught one day and i was like NO FUCKIN WAY thats how you do it !!!!!!!!#like the first krakoa story i read technically was resurrection of magneto followed by the trial of magneto#clearly we see i had an agenda vjALKJKLAJ BUT STILL#it was STILL a really good run ... i could piece together enough of the background before then and really enjoyed it on its own#with that said tho it was very cool/funny to see crumbs Of trial of magneto in way of x#BUT NOW I HAVE LEGION OF X HAHAAAA i cant wait to properly sit and read it ..... after i get through my New Mutants issues ....#i got those a while ago but i kept putting off reading them ... oops ..... i read the first one at least#i was gonna say something but i forgot. oh no i didnt i remember thats what i love about comic books#because theres So Many and so many timelines and stories it invites a lot of community interaction#just to be like 'oh hey did you know This happened in This issue you should check it out'. thats beautiful#even if. its to talk about utter dog shit like she lies with angels BUT STILL ITS COMMUNITY !!!!! we can be lovers AND haters together <3#its why i love getting physical comics too. i mean i dont have friends or people who visit me LOL#but i like the idea of bringing up what i have and letting people borrow it. community ......

Batman Reading Order
I finally got my friends to start reading Batman, but now I need to give them a reading order. The thing is, I’ve mostly read whatever I could get my hands on, based on recommendations from people online and with a focus on Tim. So I’m not really sure what to recommend.
They know almost nothing; just last month, they found out there was more than one Robin and that Batwoman and Batman aren’t the “parents” of a family or something like that.
What would be a good reading order to get someone into Batman? Assume the person knows absolutely nothing about it.

I love this little scene from the Star Wars Legends Epic Collection Volume 1: Dawn of the Jedi: Force Storm #1.
For context, the Je’daii Master has just told these younglings the history of Queen Hadiya, who began the Despot War against the Je’daii. But she ultimately failed twelve years ago (from the standpoint of this scene) and was killed and the war ended.
Tumblr media
The way the Je'daii Master handles the situation is so different from what we would expect of the Jedi of later generations.
The Jedi of later generations would tell their students to let go of their anger and their hatred, that these are trappings of the Dark Side. However, the ancient Je'daii Order of 25,800(ish) BBY champion balance above all else, and so they recognize that hatred and anger are a natural part of being alive. They are not dangerous emotions, so long as you do not let these emotions consume you.
"To understand Hadiya, I must find where she lives in my heart, how I am like her."
Also, I absolutely love this quote which so beautifully displays the radical compassion of the Je'daii.
You can buy Star Wars Legends Epic Collection Volume 1 here on iBooks if you have an Apple device, that’s where I got it. I could only find it for over $200 on Amazon so this is the best I got. I'm sure you could find it on eBay though?

ok so i have a slight confession to make
as obsessed as I am with spider-man I have only read a handful of comics, having sort of avoided it because theres SO much content and my comic reading list is already insane (i'm still stuck in 2012) i do know things from other media and just learning but again have only read a handful of spidey comics so now i'm out here asking – if I want to get into spidey comics, what should I read? as a young avengers and ikol loki fan etc (new-ish characters) most of my reading list is comprised of every-single-appearance-of-x-character, and I just can't practically do that with massive heroes that have been around for 60 years and make tiny cameos in many comics (i have a loki list like that and it is long but not as long as a peter parker one would be)

Hey! :) I’ve really been wanting to get into reading comics but I have no idea where to start 🥲
Do you have any recommendations or references for how to start reading about different dc characters? I mainly want to start reading about batman and the rest of his clan but I want to branch out to other characters as well
hi!! i've gotten this question a lot and i'm so sorry it's taken me so long to answer all of y'all! but i wanted to make sure if i made a list, it would be with the best references i could find, and that it made sense for even a beginner
what i've found is that... there's apparently no right answer? mostly, you'll find people recommending you to start with their favorite collections, like Batman: Hush, etc etc. from what i've been able to tell, getting into comics is about choosing one that sounds the most interesting to you, and going from there. if you like the collection you've picked up, then someone will recommend another collection, so on. a lot of people recommend that you start with a certain character, someone that you really like. so if Tim Drake is calling to you like many... many people, then you can find a reading guide for him and pick and choose from a collection. like this one from this blogger that helped me. one of my favorite characters is Cassandra Cain (though I don't write her as often, which kind of happens when I really like a character?). she has a Batgirl run!! Batgirl #1. (((please note that this link takes you to readallcomics.com, which you should use an adblocker for if you want to use this website. however!! it is very different from readcomics.com))) look how cool she is!!
Tumblr media
however I personally like to try and read in chronological order because I don't like missing out on anything. in my search, i found an amazingly ordered, extensive website called comicbookherald.com
i started using this because they have a list in chronological order for many, many, many characters in the DC universe:
https://www.comicbookherald.com/reading-dc-comics/
one of the very first options on this list is Batman (listed in alphabetical), and when you click on him, you'll find exactly what you're looking for:
https://www.comicbookherald.com/reading-dc-comics/batman-reading-order/
Tumblr media
the links on the actual titles in the list will take you to Amazon to buy the comic, but there are other ways to find these comics either online (like seen above with Batgirl #1) or through your local library (recommended). if your library doesn't have them, you might be able to find them at a nearby one or you can ask the librarian how a request works. they'd probably be happy to get it for you (support your local libraries!!!) you might find that you prefer going to a comic shop, and that's great too
i also looked up the publication history of the Batman comics using Wikipedia, just to make sure that I knew what i was doing, and i started with the very first on the list: Detective Comics #27. this is Bruce Wayne/Batman's very first appearance.
i also found some helpful videos that i personally have tried to follow:
"BATMAN 101: A GUIDE TO HELP YOU START READING BATMAN COMICS!" by History of the Batman
"Where to Start Reading Batman Comics | Best Batman Comics for Beginners in Collected Editions!" by Near Mint Condition
the issue is that it's pretty hard to read all of the characters at once and stay in order, which means you'll probably want to stick to reading one character at a time and piecing it together like that. but if you're feeling brave, i'd cross reference the years and publication history and go by the order of when each character shows up: start by reading Batman, and when Dick Grayson appears, look up his list and see how the publication history looks, and i guess start trying to read them side by side? the same would go for when Jason appears, then Tim, etc etc. but this might be VERY difficult, so i am very much recommending beginners to start by reading Batman's and branch out from there
my personal favorite right now is Batman & Robin: Year One because Dick Grayson is in it and he's so cute here in his Robin days
edit: adding on this ask i got about hoopla

I recently met Jennika in the idw comics and now i have Family Web thoughts.
(i had said a while ago that i probably wouldn't add Jennika or Venus until i knew more about them. Well here we are. for jennika at least. Still haven't met Venus (if she's even in the idw comics. everyone else is so i kinda expect to see her at some point) but i have a way of adding her in as well, which i might do regardless.)
I'm not sure i have words enough today to explain my entire thought process on Jennika here, but i'm going to certainly try. under the cut b/c it might end up rambling
Jennika is the turtles' bio little sister born months after their disappearance. I'm not sure if Lou knew about her before everything went down (i'm thinking not since i'd imagine it was fairly new news to even Mama and she just didn't have the time to tell him.)
Her Spider traits are visibly subtle unless she is actively showing them off. Her eyes are red (and can be entirely red w/ a bit of a glow like mama's spider eyes) and her teeth are pointed. She can also stick to surfaces (which she does a lot) and she might do webs like mikey (i'm still debating that one.)
Jennika grew up fairly isolated b/c Mama already lost her other four and she didn't want to risk loosing Jennika as well. She had tutors for everything. She excels in dance class and when she showed interest in martial arts, she was given a teach and excelled in that too.
She idolizes her mother and, having grown up being told about her older brothers (and promises that they would be reunited one day) she idolizes them as well. Well, she idolizes the versions of them she's mentally imagined over the last 12 years. So meeting them in person would be a bit of a shock since she was expecting four perfect brothers and, instead, got four goobers who think that even frozen pizza is a delicacy.
She can already use her mystics pretty reliably (via a mystic conduit like the boys' weapons). Hers is basically just shadow clones that she can (maybe) mystically switch places with when needed.
She usually hangs out on the ceiling of mama's office when she's not in classes. But, once she turned 13, was finally able to convince Mama to let her help a little more directly. Since then she has posing as Mama's assistant (though mama insists that she must use a clone if the task is anything other than standing next to Mama. Jennika doesn't always listen to this rule.)
I might have more, but i can't think of it right now. so just enjoy some concept art for the turtle's little sister, i guess.
