When a thump sounded loud somewhere out by the porch, Monica frowned. Her first thought was Colin had woken up, but it wasn’t right above them, like it should have been for that.

“Oh no,” Becca said, looking at where the thumping had come from.

“What? What is it?” Rose asked, wide eyed.

“Ron Swanson’s on the roof.”

Monica groaned. “Not the goat. Please, not the goat.”

“That’s what that sound is. He’s up there.” Becca looked imploringly at Monica. “You have to get Rasputin.” Becca’s rooster was the only thing that could ever get Ron off the roof. “I mean, I could get him, but I’d need someone to hold me upright, as the world’s kind of spinning.”

Monica wasn’t exactly steady on her feet, but she wasn’t going to send a pregnant woman or a completely loaded woman to do the job. Which meant it fell to her. She pushed to her feet. “Rose, I hope your retroactive bachelorette party doesn’t involve goats or roosters.”

“From your lips to God’s ears,” Rose returned as Monica pulled on her winter gear. She lost her balance a bit but caught herself by leaning against the wall as she pulled on her second boot.

“You okay there, champ?” Rose asked with some concern.

“I think a little drunk is necessary for me to even attempt to touch that rooster.” Monica pulled on her hat. “If I’m not back in twenty, send a search party after me. I imagine the rooster has pecked my eyes out.”

“Rasputin wouldn’t do that. Not both eyes anyway.”

“Uh-huh. I’ll be back.” Monica stepped out into the icy night. As she stepped off the porch, she looked up at the dazzling sky above. Stars twinkled everywhere, and the moon’s light bathed the snowy ranch in silver. Becca had strung Christmas lights all over the house and barn, so red and green cut through all that white.

Monica took a deep breath. Oh, it was beautiful. How lucky she was to have come here, to get to experience this.

Then she remembered herself and turned to look up at the roof. And there was a goat, munching on a wreath, while red and green lights sparkled around him. She doubted very much that many people got to experience this.

She pulled her phone out and took a picture of Ron Swanson on the roof, chuckling to herself. Before she could head for the barn to get Rasputin, she heard a truck rumble in the distance, then saw headlights cutting through the dark.

When the truck came to a stop, Jack slid out of the driver’s seat and glared up at the roof. “Damn goat.”

“I’m on my way to get Rasputin. Unless, as the only sober one, you want to handle that for me.” Monica smiled winsomely.

Jack grimaced. “Oh, fine, but keep an eye on those two. They’re going to need help getting to the bunkhouse. Just keep them inside the truck till I’m back.”

“Sure.”

Jack strode to the barn and Monica peered into the truck. She thought both Gabe and Alex were passed out, until the back door swung open.

Monica jumped, taken aback as Gabe stumbled down from the truck. Monica waved a hand in front of her face as the smell of alcohol and bar hit her like a punch. “Dear Lord, how much did you have to drink?”

“S-still conscious s’apparently not ’nough,” he said, falling to a knee, then getting back to his feet and brushing the snow off his pants.

“Jack said you’re supposed to stay in the truck.”

“Jack ain’t never been my commanding officer, and he’s not starting now.” Gabe took a step toward her, stumbled again, and she reached forward to try and help keep him upright. Except then they were both somehow in the snow, Gabe something like half on top of her.

He didn’t get up, and she was shocked enough to just lie there in the cold, icy snow with his dark eyes assessing her.

“You smell pretty.”

Monica laughed in spite of herself. “You need to work on your drunk compliments.” She pushed at his chest. “Get off me.” Good Lord, it was a hard chest. Even under his coat and heavy shirt, she could feel the strength of him.

But Gabe rolled off her and got to his feet. He held out a gloved hand, and she let him pull her to her feet. But then he pulled her closer, not letting go of her hand. His head tilted down to her ear, much like it had in the bunkhouse the other day.

“I doubt you want to hear my other compliments, s-sweetheart.”

It was a slur more than a stutter, and he was falling-down drunk and foolish, so she did not shudder at that. Not at all. “Don’t let alcohol put words in your mouth, Gabe.”

He kept his grip on her hand, pulling her so close their bodies touched. It shouldn’t have mattered. They were both wearing enough layers to ward off the cold of a Montana winter night. She didn’t feel cold. Shivery maybe, but not cold.

“Oh, I have those words when I’m sober too. I’ve just got enough sense to keep them to myself.” His lips barely touched her ear as she spoke. “Sparks, remember?”

She could only stare at him, and she didn’t feel all the icy wetness on her back or the frigid chill of the air around them. She only felt his big hand holding on to hers and, somehow, all that heat emanating off him. “I remember.”

He leaned closer, so close his cheek actually pressed to hers. Everything inside of her rioted to some sparkling life. A feeling so long forgotten it was almost foreign, centering itself low in her belly.

“Drunk enough to make a bad decision?” he asked in a low, rough voice.

She paused. Even knowing it should be an automatic no, there was that foreign part of her tempted. A bad decision with him sounded enticing instead of wrong. Something she deserved instead of something she should avoid.

But he was drunk. She was a little too. That was all that foreign part was. The loss of sense and control, and she’d never let herself give in to that. “N-no.”

He grinned, pulling back, all wolfish in the silvery light of the moon. “Too bad.” Then he was striding…well, stumbling, toward the bunkhouse.

Major League Baseball roundup: Mariners sweep Royals

Canadian left-hander James Paxton pitched eight scoreless innings on Canada Day as the host Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Sunday, completing a sweep of the three-game series.

The Mariners won their season-high seventh consecutive game.

Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth inning for his major-league-leading 32nd save of the season. The Mariners are 39-0 this season when Diaz enters the game with a lead, including 21-0 when he’s summoned with a one-run lead.

Paxton (8-2) allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out 11. It was the seventh time in 18 starts this season that Paxton has posted a double-digit strikeout total.

Giants 9, Diamondbacks 6

Brandon Belt and Joe Panik each had two hits and drove in two runs and San Francisco pounded out 16 hits for a victory over Arizona to complete a three-game sweep in Phoenix.

Nick Hundley had three hits and an RBI, Brandon Crawford and Austin Slater had two hits and an RBI, and Hunter Pence had a two-run double for San Francisco, which has won three in a row and 10 of 12.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer and Jarrod Dyson had two singles, two stolen bases and two RBIs for Arizona, which was swept at home for only the second time this season. The Diamondbacks have lost three in a row after winning seven of eight.

Aaron Hicks hit three homers as New York rolled to a rout of Boston at Yankee Stadium.

Hicks hit two of New York’s six homers off David Price (9-6) while batting from the right side of the plate, a two-run homer in the second and a solo drive in the fourth. The switch-hitting center field added his third homer in the eighth off Hector Velazquez while batting left-handed.

It was New York’s first three-homer game by one player since Alex Rodriguez on July 25, 2015, at Minnesota.

Colin Moran’s second grand slam of the season was one of three homers allowed by Tyson Ross as Pittsburgh won the rubber match of a three-game series at San Diego.

Corey Dickerson and Elias Diaz also homered for the Pirates, while Hunter Renfroe homered for the Padres in a 3 1/2-hour marathon that numbered 13 pitchers, 18 hits, 10 walks, five mound visits, 16 stranded runners and two errors.

Reliever Kyle Crick (1-1) was credited with the win for the Pirates. Felipe Vazquez was credited with his 17th save.

Cleveland’s offense vented two days’ worth of frustration, producing 15 runs and 20 hits in a sweep-preventing victory at Oakland, Calif., that snapped the Athletics’ six-game winning streak.

After being held to a total of three runs in narrow losses during the first two games of the series, the Indians got home runs from Francisco Lindor and Edwin Encarnacion in the seventh inning before blowing the game open with an eight-run eighth in which the first 10 batters reached base safely.

Avisail Garcia had four hits and scored three runs, and Matt Davidson added three hits and three RBIs as the White Sox avoided a three-game sweep. Chicago won for only the 13th time in 40 road games this season.

Rougned Odor went 3-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Rangers. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Texas, which has won 11 of 14.

Cubs 11, Twins 10

Jon Lester homered and won his seventh consecutive start, and Ian Happ homered and had three hits as Chicago completed a three-game sweep of visiting Minnesota.

It was the fourth straight game in which Chicago scored 10 or more runs, the first time since 1930 that the Cubs have accomplished that feat. Chicago, which has also won four in a row, scored 35 runs and belted out 46 hits in the three-game sweep of Minnesota, which lost for the ninth time in 11 games.

Lester (11-2) moved into the National League lead in wins. He left after five innings, having allowed four runs (two earned). Lester smashed a three-run shot in the second inning, with his second career homer giving the Cubs a 3-1 lead and highlighting an eight-run inning for Chicago.

Braves 6, Cardinals 5

Freddie Freeman hit his 16th homer to highlight a five-run rally that propelled Atlanta to a win at St. Louis and a sweep of a three-game series.

After Ozzie Albies opened the sixth inning with a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, Freeman connected against John Gant (2-3) for a two-run shot to center field. The Braves went on to get RBIs from Charlie Culberson, Dansby Swanson and pinch-hitter Ryan Flaherty.

It was the first three-game sweep for Atlanta in St. Louis since 2012. Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz (6-4) pitched five scoreless innings and allowed only one hit and three walks. He struck out nine.

Phillies 4, Nationals 3 (13 innings)

Pinch hitter Andrew Knapp hit a game-winning solo home run with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning, and Philadelphia rallied to knock off visiting Washington.

Knapp hit his third home run of the season on a full-count fastball from Washington’s Justin Miller, helping the Phillies take three of four from the Nationals.

Matt Harvey threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings before rain cut his outing short, and Jose Peraza hit a grand slam as Cincinnati beat visiting Milwaukee.

Peraza hit the slam off rookie right-hander Aaron Wilkerson, just recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs, to cap a five-run sixth inning. It was Peraza’s fifth home run of the season and his third in his past five games.

Harvey (4-5) gave up two hits, didn’t walk a batter and matched a season high with six strikeouts.

Rays 3, Astros 2

Matt Duffy deposited a two-run single down the right field line in the seventh inning, and Tampa Bay rallied for a victory over Houston in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Duffy hit a two-out, two-strike bloop hit, driving home Adeiny Hechavarria and Joey Wendle to erase a 1-0 deficit. Hechavarria scored with ease from second base, but Wendle crossing home from first was a surprising byproduct of Astros right fielder Josh Reddick inexplicably holding the ball in foul territory, apparently unaware that Wendle was on base.

Astros starter Charlie Morton (10-2) allowed six hits and issued two walks over 6 2/3 innings while striking out 11. The rally made a winner of Blake Snell (11-4), who allowed one run on four hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings.

Mets 5, Marlins 2

Steven Matz and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as New York overcame three errors and recorded a victory at Miami.

The Mets reached the halfway point at 33-48. It is their worst record through 81 games in a non-strike season since losing 103 games in 1993. New York also won for only the second time in 12 games, the sixth time in 29 games and improved to 16-39 since April.

Matz (4-5) allowed an unearned run on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He lowered his road ERA to 2.25, third in the National League.

Tigers 9, Blue Jays 1

Nicholas Castellanos hit a grand slam, Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven strong innings, and Detroit ended an 11-game losing streak with a victory at Toronto.

Castellanos capped a five-run fifth inning with his fourth career grand slam and 13th homer of the season against J.A. Happ. His heroics give the Tigers a chance to gain a split in the four-game series when the teams play the series finale on Monday afternoon.

JaCoby Jones hit his sixth homer of the season for the Tigers, a two-run shot in the ninth against Preston Guilmet.

Orioles 8, Angels 2

Mark Trumbo homered twice to lead a four-homer attack, and Kevin Gausman threw eight innings as Baltimore snapped a seven-game losing streak with a victory over visiting Los Angeles.

Trumbo has seven homers in his last 14 games. Manny Machado and Trey Mancini also went deep for the Orioles.

Gausman (4-6) gave up two runs on six hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Major League Baseball roundup: Mariners sweep Royals

Canadian left-hander James Paxton pitched eight scoreless innings on Canada Day as the host Seattle Mariners defeated the Kansas City Royals 1-0 Sunday, completing a sweep of the three-game series.

The Mariners won their season-high seventh consecutive game.

Paxton (8-2) allowed only two hits and two walks while striking out 11. It was the seventh time in 18 starts this season that Paxton has posted a double-digit strikeout total.

Giants 9, Diamondbacks 6

Brandon Belt and Joe Panik each had two hits and drove in two runs and San Francisco pounded out 16 hits for a victory over Arizona to complete a three-game sweep in Phoenix.

Nick Hundley had three hits and an RBI, Brandon Crawford and Austin Slater had two hits and an RBI, and Hunter Pence had a two-run double for San Francisco, which has won three in a row and 10 of 12.

Yankees 11, Red Sox 1

Aaron Hicks hit three homers as New York rolled to a rout of Boston at Yankee Stadium.

It was New York’s first three-homer game by one player since Alex Rodriguez on July 25, 2015, at Minnesota.

Colin Moran’s second grand slam of the season was one of three homers allowed by Tyson Ross as Pittsburgh won the rubber match of a three-game series at San Diego.

On the first day of the Hayward Open, 9 holes of play was able to be completed due to weather constraints. On Sunday, tomorrow, we are anticipating our regular Sunday format of 27 holes. Tee times are below. Championship and 1st Flight – Stroke play. 2nd through 15th – Match play.

AP-NORC Poll: Most Dislike NFL Protests _ And Trump Comments

WASHINGTON — Most Americans think refusing to stand for the national anthem is disrespectful to the country, the military and the American flag. But most also disapprove of President Donald Trump’s calling for NFL players to be fired for refusing to stand.

The NFL protests began last season with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who knelt during the national anthem to bring more attention to the killings of black men by police officers. The protests spread this season, as the former San Francisco 49er was unable to sign on with another team, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett said he was racially profiled by Las Vegas police and then Trump sounded off.

According to a poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, 52 percent of Americans disapprove of professional athletes who have protested by refusing to stand during the national anthem, compared to 31 percent who approve. At the same time, 55 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s call for firing players who refuse to stand, while 31 percent approve.

In the poll, African-Americans were far more likely to approve of the players’ protests.

“I don’t see kneeling while the anthem is being played as being disrespectful,” said Mary Taylor, 64, a retired law librarian from Olympia, Washington. “Somebody has to stand up. Right now, it’s black football players.”

Taylor, who is white, said she supports police but understands why players are protesting. And her personal politics also factor in.

“I’m for it because Donald Trump is against it,” she said.

The form of the protest seems to matter. The poll found Americans are more likely to approve than disapprove of players who, instead of kneeling, link arms in solidarity during the anthem, 45 percent to 29 percent.

“People don’t want to be confronted with their racism in any form. If they are confronted with it, they want it in the mildest form possible,” said DeRay Mckesson, a Black Lives Matter activist who has protested police actions since the 2014 killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

The NFL protests got more attention and morphed into a bigger debate about patriotism after Trump told a crowd at an Alabama rally last month: “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now! Out! He’s fired. Fired!’”

That prompted dozens of NFL players, and a few team owners, to join in protests. They knelt, raised fists or locked arms in solidarity during pre-game ceremonies when the anthem was played.

Broken down by race, 55 percent of African-Americans approve of players refusing to stand for the anthem, and 19 percent disapprove, the poll found. Among whites, 62 percent disapprove and 25 percent approve.

Seventy-nine percent of blacks disapprove of Trump’s call for players to be fired, while just 8 percent approve. Among whites, 48 percent disapprove and 38 percent approve.

Thomas Sleeper of Holden, Massachusetts, said he considers the protests to be freedom of expression protected by the First Amendment — and pre-game protests are likely the best stage for them because “individually protesting is not going to get as much press.”

“They want people to know that the country isn’t living up to its full standard,” said Sleeper, 78, who is white. “This is a way to get noticed, and possibly get some action taken.”

Chandler, Arizona, business owner Larry Frank, 67, said the protests are inappropriate and disrespectful to military veterans. Trump’s response, he said, was “dead-on.”

“We should keep politics out of our sports,” said Frank, who served in the Air Force. “We pay them to come out and play games and entertain us. Using this medium is not the right way to do it. Do it off the field. Let’s not interfere with the process of a good business and a fun sport.”

The poll shows that overall, about 6 in 10 Americans agree with the assessment that refusing to stand for the anthem is disrespectful to the military, and most also think it’s disrespectful to the country’s values and the American flag. About 6 in 10 blacks said they did not consider it disrespectful.

Just 4 in 10 Americans overall, and about half of African-Americans, think refusing to stand for the flag can be an act of patriotism.

Frank, an avid Arizona Cardinals fan who is white, said he plans to boycott watching football on Veterans’ Day to show his disgust with the players’ protest, part of a larger campaign being promoted on social media.

Thomas Peoples of New Brunswick, New Jersey, said the protests are a personal decision for each player. He doesn’t think their actions are meant to disrespect the country or the military.

Still, he would not participate in such a protest.

“It’s not my approach to resolve a problem,” said Peoples, 66, who is black. “I’m not a protester. But they’re expressing their feelings about how some Americans are treated in this country.”

The AP-NORC poll of 1,150 adults was conducted Sept. 28-Oct. 2 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for all respondents is plus or minus 4.1 percentage points. The poll includes a total of 337 black respondents, who were sampled at a higher rate than their proportion of the population for purposes of analysis. The margin of sampling error among blacks is plus or minus 5.7 percentage points. For results reported among all adults, responses among blacks are weighted to reflect their proportion among all U.S. adults.
