The climate worldwide was getting colder and colder and the sky was turning violet. Later on, news stations started reporting that there were clouds at ground level. Turned out this was all happening because Earth somehow went out of orbit.

Last month, Russell Vought sat in a five-star Washington, DC, hotel suite, bowing his head in prayer with two men he thought were relatives of a wealthy conservative donor.

Vought, one of the key authors of Project 2025, a right-wing blueprint for a second Trump term, expected the meeting would help his think tank secure a substantial contribution. For nearly two hours, he talked candidly about his behind-the-scenes work to prepare policy for former President Donald Trump, his expansive views on presidential power, his plans to restrict pornography and immigration, and his complaints that the GOP was too focused on “religious liberty” instead of “Christian nation-ism.” But the men Vought was talking to actually worked for a British journalism nonprofit and were secretly recording him the entire time. The nonprofit, the Centre for Climate Reporting, published a video of the meeting on Thursday – offering a window into the thinking of one of the top policy minds of the MAGA movement, who’s been floated as a possible White House chief of staff. Trump has publicly rejected Project 2025 as Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has sought to tie him to some of the plan’s most extreme proposals. But in private, Vought said that those disavowals were merely “graduate-level politics.”

Vought said his group, the Center for Renewing America, was secretly drafting hundreds of executive orders, regulations, and memos that would lay the groundwork for rapid action on Trump’s plans if he wins, describing his work as creating “shadow” agencies. He claimed that Trump has “blessed” his organization and “he’s very supportive of what we do.” “Eighty percent of my time is working on the plans of what’s necessary to take control of these bureaucracies,” Vought said. “And we are working doggedly on that, whether it’s destroying their agencies’ notion of independence … whether that is thinking through how the deportation would work.” In discussing Trump’s plan to carry out the largest deportation in US history – which the former president has called for publicly – Vought said the expulsion of millions of undocumented immigrants could help “save the country.” Once deportations begin, “you’re really going to be winning a debate along the way about what that looks like,” Vought said. “And so that’s going to cause us to get us off of multiculturalism, just to be able to sustain and defend the deportation, right?”

The video is the latest example of secret recordings exposing political figures’ private comments. The tactics used by the Centre – which created fake websites and a fake LinkedIn profile to deceive Vought – are typically rejected by mainstream American news outlets. But using hidden cameras and deceptive practices in reporting is more common in the UK, where the Centre is based, and it’s been on the rise on the fringe of the US media as well. The conservative group Project Veritas has long conducted sting operations and published selectively edited videos, and earlier this year, a liberal activist released audio recordings of conversations she had with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito and his wife, as well as Chief Justice John Roberts.

An elaborate ruse

Vought served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget under Trump, where he made a name for himself as a policy wonk committed to the MAGA movement. In public, Trump repeatedly praised Vought for doing an “incredible” and “fantastic” job at OMB. After Trump left office, Vought started the Center for Renewing America, a nonprofit that describes itself as the “tip of the America First spear.” CRA was one of many right-leaning groups that partnered on Project 2025, a more than 900-page blueprint for Trump’s second term that was led by the Heritage Foundation. Vought personally authored the project’s chapter on the executive office of the president, and his group contributed to several other chapters of the plan as well. Vought also served as the policy director of the Republican National Convention committee that rewrote the GOP’s official platform this year – a sign of how central he is to Republicans’ policy goals. 

Last month, Vought’s team was approached by employees with the Centre for Climate Reporting, which has previously published investigations into climate negotiations and Saudi Arabia’s energy policy. The Centre spun an elaborate fiction, with a journalist and a paid actor posing as the brother and son-in-law of a reclusive New Mexico investor. The nonexistent patriarch had watched Vought’s appearances on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” show while recuperating from an illness – and wanted to make a seven-figure contribution to CRA after previously focusing his philanthropy on classical music, they claimed. The meeting took place on July 24, the week after the Republican convention, at the presidential suite of the Rosewood hotel in DC, where the Centre had placed several hidden cameras and microphones, Carter said. After the Centre’s employees suggested starting the meeting with a prayer, they peppered Vought with questions about his work and views, the video shows.

Episode ideas for my "Lydia and Beetlejuice are rival newspaper reporters" TV show concept:

-A hybrid lab creature escapes from a top research facility and the race is on to recapture it. Lydia and Beetlejuice both attach themselves to separate search parties in pursuit of the creature. Though they're both chasing the same story, they end up having to protect each other when the creature is found and goes feral on its pursuers. Upon further investigation, Lydia and Beetlejuice discover that the creature was horrifically mistreated while in captivity and together expose the facility's abuse. The creature is found suitable foster parents that treat it right.

-A famous horror film director is holding an exclusive one-night-only screening of a never-before-released film he's made. Beetlejuice and Lydia both sneak into the event in disguises. They instantly recognize each other but, out of professional respect, don't blow one another's covers. They watch the film, but something is very off about it, and the way the audience is so totally absorbed in it, like they're being hypnotized. As it turns out, they are being hypnotized, and the film's spell possesses everyone but Beetlejuice. The evil director has used the power of movie magic to turn the audience into his personal slaves, and Beetlejuice must find a way to break the spell (and save Lydia) before it's too late.

-Delores's cult is rapidly growing in influence and power and both Beetlejuice and Lydia are assigned to investigate and report on what's going on. However, there's a problem. The cult only accepts married couples, so Beetlejuice and Lydia are forced to make a truce so they can go undercover. They pretend to be a happily married couple indoctrinated into the cult. The ruse is surprisingly easy to pull off, except for when Beetlejuice invents outlandish stories when the other cult members ask them invasive questions about their intimate life, much to Lydia's embarrassment.

-In this AU, Rory is a smarmy politician running for senator, whose publicity campaign revolves around raising awareness for mental health issues and improving treatment/conditions for diagnosed people. When Lydia interviews him, he tells her the sob story of his dead fiancée and a part of her (the experienced journalist part) can tell that he's lying through his teeth for voter sympathy. But she can't prove it. In private, Rory believes that all mentally unwell people should be "locked up forever like they used to be" and has grand plans to that effect. Lydia and Beetlejuice work together to expose this slimeball before he gets elected.

-Lydia's co-workers Barbara and Adam Maitland go on vacation, and Lydia is assigned to take over Barbara's "Ask Mrs. Maitland" column for a few weeks. It starts with Lydia receiving an completely unhinged ask letter that she correctly guesses is a prank from Beetlejuice. Answering the real ask letters goes well for her at first, until Lydia gets a letter from a teenage girl who's getting bullied at school. Lydia advises the girl to "assert herself" more, not knowing that this girl has Carrie-esque powers. Lydia's encouraging response inspires the girl to go on an epic rampage of revenge against her classmates. Lydia has to stop her before she completely obliterates her entire town.

Umbrella: Abortion Funds

For the past three years, FTH has supported one “umbrella” cause: we invite participants to donate to their own local grassroots organization, while also suggesting a handful of exemplary organizations working in in communities where the need is especially acute. This year (like last year) this umbrella category is abortion funds.

Abortion funds are grassroots nonprofits dedicated to supporting reproductive justice in their communities. These organizations provide financial, logistical and emotional support for people seeking abortions, and work to build collective power to create political and cultural change around reproductive freedom.

Our 2023 selections for the umbrella group was compiled with assistance from Kiki, a digital engagement manager for an abortion support nonprofit and the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the (now-defunct) site The Learned Fangirl. Meet Audrey Cerdan, climate editor-in-chief at France Télévisions who changed the weather report

It lasts only a few minutes, but the weather report brings its own kind of atmosphere to France.

Every evening at 8pm, a familiar anchor from state broadcaster France Télévisions steps into people’s homes with “a warm hello” and tells them about tomorrow. 

Televised forecasts have been a staple of daily life since the 1940s; changing such a trusted format is no small matter. But the way the climate crisis is disrupting our weather demands innovation, so last year the broadcaster turned its traditional report into a climate change-informed weather report, Journal Météo-Climat.

“We see it as the weather being a still image, and the climate being the film in which this image is featured,” explains Audrey Cerdan, climate editor-in-chief at France Télévisions. “If you just see the still image, but you don't show the whole movie, you’re not going to understand the still picture.”

Cerdan was the journalist tasked with overseeing this transformation. She has just been crowned one of three ‘Journalists of the Year’ for 2024 by Covering Climate Now - an organisation that celebrates the best of climate journalism.

Last Thursday I had an exclusive interview with Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel. We stood and talked in the great greenhouse in Kew Gardens. Victoria had a laugh that I wore both a fluffy vest and a winter coat. I am a person who is always cold. The Crown Princess is a person who is always warm. [...] Victoria and Daniel joke and laugh a lot. The Prince first ended up behind a large palm leaf that insisted on laying itself over his face. There was a lot of laughter. But when the interview starts, it gets grave and is taken with seriousness. Not least because my questions dealt with major topics such as the war in Ukraine and the climate crisis. It turned out to be an exciting conversation.
