Nato a Parigi nel 1840, Claude Oscar Monet crebbe in un modesto ambiente borghese. Il commercio di generi coloniali del padre peggiorò a dismisura, tanto da imporre alla famiglia di trasferirsi a Le Havre.

Never have I imagined a world without poets and artists. It's scary.
When no one is a poet, the world is silent. When no one is an artist, the world is bland. Their art is what makes the world an interesting place to be. The poet's prose might be something to live for for the disturbed and the artist's piece might be something to hold on to for the troubled. They color the world with their pens and brushes. We often take it for granted that's why it's scary to imagine a world without poets and artists.

My version of Woman with a Parasol.
This painting has lived rent free in my mind for awhile now, so I figured I could draw my take on it. My first thought was 'lesbians+longing' as a different spin on the original.

Claude Monet
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a French impressionist painter who transformed modern art with his emphasis on light brushstrokes, bright colours, and uncluttered nature. Famed for his landscapes and series of paintings that captured the same view in different momentary atmospheric conditions, Monet is heralded as one of the greatest and most influential artists of all time.
Early Life
Oscar-Claude Monet was born in Paris on 14 November 1840. The job of Monet's father, Claude-Adolphe, is not known except that it was a humble one and that the family often struggled financially. In 1845, the Monets moved to Le Havre on the northern coast of France where Claude-Adolphe worked in his brother-in-law's thriving wholesale grocery business. Oscar-Claude's favourite subject at school was art, and, fascinated by the boats in the busy harbour, he often sketched them. From 15, he made money by selling caricatures, some of which were displayed in a local shop window each Sunday, which became a minor local attraction. Monet's aunt, Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, was an amateur painter and she encouraged Oscar-Claude, introducing him to the artist Amand Gautier (1825-1894).
Another artistic influence was the landscape painter Eugène Boudin (1824-1898) and the pair went painting together en plein air (outdoors), as opposed to the traditional method of painting in the studio. Still only 17, Monet produced his first outdoor painting, View from Rouelles, in 1858. Monet later described the experience:
Boudin put up his easel and set to work…for me it was like the rending of a veil; I understood; I grasped what painting could be…my destiny as a painter opened up before me. If I have indeed become a painter; I owe it to Eugène Boudin…Gradually my eyes were opened and I understood nature.
(Hodge, 15)
In April 1859, Monet gathered together his savings from his caricatures sales and went to study art in Paris. He enrolled in the unconventional Académie Suisse and started to make friends with artists like Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). More caricatures helped eke out his savings.
In June 1861, Monet's studies were rudely interrupted by conscription into the French army. Joining the African Light Cavalry, he was shipped off to Algeria. The bright colours of North Africa left a lasting impression on the young artist, who continued to sketch when he could. Then, after contracting typhoid in 1862, Monet was invalided back home. Six months later, Aunt Marie-Jeanne bought her nephew out of the army. Now 22, he dropped the Oscar from his name and began to paint again. It was at Le Havre that Monet met the Dutch artist Johan Barthold Jongkind (1819-1891), whose work he already admired for its broad and bold brushstrokes and which captured effects of the weather on seascapes. As Monet noted, Jongkind "became from this moment, my true master; and it is to him that I owe the final development of my painter's eye" (Hodge, 19).

Naturalism x Realism✨The Crux of Emile Zola’s The Masterpiece✨ (mostly text) mini zine. I felt compelled to make this because my interest in Zola began with Oscar Wilde, then extended to Vincent Van Gogh, Jean Luc Godard, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s calling Godard’s Life is Life a masterpiece ft the main character Nana, Claude Monet’s connection to Edouard Manet who did the painting entitled Nana.
So, serendipitously/synchronicity. It’s all very artful

Our paradox of memories
As odd as it may sound, Oscar sold memories in his small cafe-looking shop. Memories he had were from people who gave it to him willingly or who have passed away. It’s really not that hard to find those small capsules; a compartment behind your ear should have differently labelled memories housed in capsules, pill capsules if you will. They sell well for a price of $2500, notwithstanding the memory. People in desperate need of money would go to Oscar’s shop and sell their memories in hopes that they could make a new one with the cash in their hands. He supposed that if people were comfortable with their wealth from selling their memories, they wouldn't need them. Oscar would gladly delegate the aftermath to the new owners with each purchase.
The golden sun spun a circle in the sky, its light dimming. The golden sun supplied the world with light and warmth. No one could see it, however, but everyone knew what it was and what it did. The silver moon was another aspect of their sky. It only came out at night, casting a low, dull light on the world. They were a force to be reckoned with.
Knock-knock, knock-knock, knock. People in this city has an odd way of inserting rhythms into their tapping. “Welcome to the Paradox.” Oscar repeated it like a radio host, repeating their introduction every session. The man walked in, shutting the door lightly with a jingle of the bell. With a definite smile, his lips curled downward, paired with a nod, before he wandered around the shop. The man looked through the years one by one, fiddling with each label on the capsules. “Can I help you?” Oscar suggested as he walked away from the counter.
The lights were too dim.
Clearly shocked, the man took a step back. “Well,” he said, opening his mouth, but nothing else came out. Was it his ear? Oscar’s expression must have been obvious because the man’s face flushed red. “I just lost this memory, and I was hoping it’d be here. I obviously don’t remember, but something is nagging at me to find it.” hands weaved around; perhaps it was trying to crochet.
“If you sold it, it has most likely been bought. From there, I can’t help you.” The man looked more perplexed the more Oscar spoke. The capsules stayed in their confines, almost bursting at the seams with a new customer, hoping that he would buy them. “No, no. It was stolen. I just need your help to find it, please. I know it’s not far from here. You're the most experienced person that I can go to.”
Did Oscar ever say that the man’s eyes looked like the pond of waterlilies from Claude Monet? Or that his hair shone as brightly as the golden sun? His mind yearned to fill this in a capsule for him to view over and over again and to no one else. What is there truly to lose when Oscar gets to spend more time with the good looking man?
Yet before Oscar could mutter another word, his precious glass door was slammed with much force. A woman in her mid-twenties had ripped out the capsules from her compartment in record time. The capsules in piles were enough for Oscar to realise that there were numerous capsules. Way more than one should have. She turned to Oscar with a desperate look in her eyes. “Please, just watch one of them. I beg you, wake up from this nightmare." The woman pleaded with unshed tears that clung onto her eyes like a lifeline. She casted a quick glance back at the two men before rushing off, once again harshly shutting Oscar's glass door.
What the fuck?
Oscar looked back at the man, who looked as confused as he was. The man huffed out a laugh as he walked towards the counter, towards Oscar. For once, Oscar felt relieved, like a puppet without its strings. “I’m Logan." the man held out his hand tentatively. "Oscar," and who was to reject such a man's warm hand? The golden sun spun again, dimming its light once more. But it never felt so bright in Oscar’s life before.
Usually, it meant no harm watching someone else's memory. So why was Oscar feeling as if he was going to pop like a cork on a shaken up champagne bottle? He gripped one of the capsules in his hands as he looked back towards Logan. The light shone onto his face, bringing more shadows that brought out the colours of his eyes. "Well, even if it was barely 1 hour of meeting you," Logan spoke, his hand twirling his half of the capsule. "It was nice to spend my time with you."
"Even if I didn't help you find the boy?"
"Even if you didn't help me find the boy."
Logan's seemingly golden hair shimmered for the last time. If they were unlucky enough to be killed by this capsule.
"Even if you were the boy himself." Logan muttered, his voice barely audible to anyone else. His breath fanned over his knuckles as he held the capsule tightly. "What?" Oscar turned to him. He never changed at all. Logan shook his head and gave his all time smile.
Once the capsule was inside their compartment of memories, they found themselves floating almost. It was never like this when someone rewatched another person's memory. Never. Why were they feeling as if they had been thrown back? Maybe they should have just stayed in the shop and ignored the woman's request. If only Oscar had closed the shop earlier, he didn't have to feel as if he was nearing the doorstep of death.
And, if-
Huh.
"What was I going to say again?" Oscar muttered, his head pounding and so was his heart. Something clawed at his mind of remember something, something important. Was it a memory or a thought? Either way, it must've not been important if he had forgotten it in the first place.
His sole collided with the asphalt, nearly tripping. The smell of rubber filled the place with engines roaring to life. Tires left imprints on the track, engraving their existence into the ground, reminding that they could not be defeated easily. The karts laid proudly on the ground, zooming off into the distance as they conquered each lap. Oscar looked up as he barely caught himself.
Logan.
The American boy who was stealing Oscar's attention from the start, ruining his focus on each race in the track. Oscar would gladly be last if it meant that he could see Logan thriving. Wouldn't it be a good time to make friends with him?
Oscar ran as fast as his feet could take him, which was relatively slow, towards Logan. Maybe it was just the lighting but Logan's eyes seemed to grow brighter when he took notice of Oscar.
"Hi, I'm Oscar. You're Logan, right?" Oscar asked, his hands reached out in hopes that he could form a bond that transcends through time and reality. "Yeah." His stupidly yet adoring American accent warped its way through Oscar's ears and brought a tune sweeter than sugar. His hands were outreached and soon, his hand was sort of in a hug with Oscar's.
"Have we met before? You seem familiar." Logan grinned, shaking their intertwined hands up and down like a ride in a theme park. "Maybe." Oscar replied, his hands going numb. Logan did look familiar, as if Oscar had talked to Logan before. Even if it was the case, Oscar didn't mind meeting Logan again and again and again.
