Chapter 1: Tit Punching And Lemonade Mouth
The creak of the wooden floor boards makes my limbs tense with each step. My dad and I’s new-ish house was definitely less than great, but it was something at least. We had moved to Somerville at the beginning of the year. The beginning of my senior year of high school.
I hadn't made many friends, well any friends for that fact. It was difficult trying to make friends when I was practically a parent to my own father. He’d calmed down with his drinking habits slightly, getting better as more time passed.
“Fuck-I’m sorry, honey.” My dad exclaims. He jolts up on the couch immediately regretting the movement as his face grimaces in pain.
It had only been a week since the last time I had walked down the stairs, into the living room, to find this. Not all progress was linear, I guess.
“It’s fine. I have to go to school, your lunch is in the fridge.” I explain while pointing to the refrigerator that was barren all except for one container holding a sad looking sandwich.
There was only enough for one sandwich. I didn’t want to be selfish and take it for myself. Especially not if it meant him drunkenly stumbling into the living room at an ungodly hour of the morning.
I finish putting my shoes on, leaving and locking the door behind me. I start walking down the familiar sidewalk, the sun coming up in the blue sky.
_
It wasn’t a short walk, but it wasn’t necessarily long either. It gave me plenty of time to think, plenty of time to fill my head with anxious thoughts. Most surrounded around my new schedule for the semester.
We only had a four block schedule. My classes were Literature 213, History 410, Math 322, and Writing 200. Nothing crazy or special. The classes didn’t worry me, the other students in the class did.
Well, and the teachers. I had the same teacher for Literature and Writing, Mrs. Evans. She had been a friend of my moms, and she knew about my ‘situation.’ It was embarrassing.
She knew enough to the point where she was genuinely concerned and I hated it. She made sure to talk to me every once in a while. I reassured her every time, lies spewing easily from my mouth from practice.
I couldn’t tell if she bought it or not, she was hard to read. Either way, she never pushed more which I was grateful for.
_
“Y/n?”
“Here.” I respond, raising my hand as Mrs. Evans takes attendance.
She let her students choose their spots most of the time, but not anymore. The seating chart had been displayed on the board. My seat had thankfully been in the back corner, by the door. The tables sat two people, the seat next to mine being empty.
She continues calling names. The door opens and shuts as a bag is placed on the seat next to mine. I look over from the corner of my eye, seeing him.
Matt Sturniolo.
A popular jock who didn’t really talk much. He had tattoos, he constantly ditched, and he was honestly a model. Bad boy persona was his motto, and girls drooled over him.
He wasn’t like other jocks with girls from what I could tell. He didn’t have a new girl hanging on his arm every week. He had only previously had two short relationships according to school gossip.
He had dated Madison at some point, but it ended nearly as quickly as it started. The second one had been the news at the beginning of the year. Anna, one of the cheerleaders, had gone to prom and dated him. From the rumors, they didn’t last very long either.
Other than that, no girls had been rumored to be with Matt. Although, plenty of girls swarmed around him, constantly trying to get his attention. They usually swarmed him and his brother, Chris.
Chris really was your stereotypical jock. A new girl every week, maybe even every day at times. He looked sweet, but looks can be deceiving. The amount of times I had walked into the girl’s bathroom and seen a girl bawling her eyes out from him dumping her was unfathomable.
“Matt?”
“Here.” He says. He raises his hand as she makes eye contact with us.
Why did she sit me next to him out of all people? I thought she liked me, this is going to be awkward. I knew her, she often did table partner work for assignments. How was I supposed to work with him?
The class continues as Mrs. Evans reviews over expectations and the curriculum.
Not even five minutes into the lecture, Matt gets up from beside me and leaves. Nobody bats an eye, almost expecting it from him.
_
I arrive at my second class, sitting in yet another assigned seat. This seat is in nearly the complete back middle, only one desk behind. The class is set up with the individual desks.
A couple minutes pass by as I hear the thud of a backpack next to me and behind me. I look over as I see blue eyes already staring back at me.
“Hey, I’m Chris. This is history 410, right?” He asks.
“Yeah, I’m Y/n. Have you ever had this teacher before?” I reply.
He shakes his head, looking behind me. “Nope. Matt?”
Matt. Of course.
I don’t hear anything from behind me. “Well, I guess we’ll all find out together then.” Chris says.
The teacher walks in and starts taking attendance. The class starts running smoothly as I zone out, not paying attention to the meaningless syllabus.
_
“Don’t touch her!” I hear someone whisper-yell.
Before I know it, I feel a hand shaking my shoulder. I raise my head, observing the history classroom. The teacher is still talking. I look over to my right, seeing Chris leaning over with an outreached hand. His arm falls back onto his desk.
“Sorry, you were asleep.” He says.
I didn’t get much sleep babysitting a drunk man. I nod, muttering a thanks under my breath as I fix my hair.
The class ends with a ring of the bell.
_
The math classroom was a distance from the history one. I could hear him, Chris and Matt. Well, mostly Chris yapping about nonsense as the walked in front of me in the hallway.
Arriving in the classroom, we get to pick our own seats. However, with the long walk, the classroom was mostly filled. The tables were grouped in fours. Chris and Matt sat at a table, sitting next to their other brother, Nick.
I look around, realizing there are only two chairs left. The one next to Nick, across from the other brothers, or one on the furthest side of the classroom, far away from the door.
I hated being far from the door. It made me anxious, like I was trapped. Plus, the seat was surrounded by guys who were constantly high. The three guys, Jerry, Thomas, and Eli, were known as skater-stoners. I could practically smell them from across the room.
The bell rings as I sit down in the seat next to Nick. “Is it okay if I sit here?” I ask. Nicks nods, not wanting to talk over the teacher while giving me a slight smile.
Nick was a wildcard. He seemed friendly, but I had heard the rumors of how he had punched a kid before. He wasn’t in any sports, he definitely wasn’t your typical jock. Other than that, I knew nothing about him.
I look across the table to see Matt staring at me. His eyes widen before he averts his gaze to the teacher.
I couldn’t help but take in his appearance. His jawline was perfect, his hair like silk, and he just looked cool. The tattoos peeked out from underneath his sweatshirt. I notice him grab the sweatshirt pulling it down further.
I look up, noticing his eyes on me with a dirty look smothered across his face. Fuck, I was starring. I move my eyes to the teacher, drowning out my thoughts with the boring lecture of rules.
_
The math lecture had ended by our lunch dismissal for our group. There were multiple lunches, we happened to be the last which meant we headed straight to our next class afterward. It was slightly longer given the time between classes.
However, we still had another five minutes before we could leave for lunch. Chris filled the silence immediately.
“If you have a kid with someone, you’re technically related.” He states.
I look over at Nick who just shakes his head. “Chris, you’re gonna scare her off before she’s even said anything.” Nick says.
Nick turns his body towards me. “Sorry, he’s fucking stupid sometimes. Well, most times.” He says. I nod my head, giggling slightly in discomfort.
Nick taps his pencil on the desk impatiently. As he looks back up at the clock, the pencil flies out of his hand and towards me. Before I can even react, a yelp in pain. “Got it! Fuck-sorry!” Nick yells.
“Nick!” Chris and Matt both yell, eyes widened as they watch the scene unfold before them. Nick profusely apologizes, rambling. “I didn’t mean to, sorry-fuck I didn’t mean to touch your tit, I mean boob, I mean-fuck, I’m gay!” He confesses, holding his hands up in defense.
I cross my arms over my left breast, holding it in pain. The man literally just punched me in the fucking boob.
“Nick, I can’t believe you just punched a girl in the tit!” Chris exclaims, laughing. Matt lips are pulled in a tight line, his elbow nudging out and hitting Chris in the ribs. Chris shuts up immediately, breaking out into laughter not even a moment later.
“Nice? I don’t really know what to say to that.” I confess.
What do you tell someone after punching you in the tit and telling you that they’re gay?
I finally let my arms fall on the desk, letting out a sigh of relief as the pain subsides. Chris is still trying not to laugh as Matt avoids looking at anything but his phone, typing profusely seemingly.
Nick slaps my arm. “We should all go to McDonalds or something! My treat since I…well yeah.” He says. Matt looks up through his hair, his eyes piercing into mine. I feel my hands start to get clammy. I shift in my seat, rubbing my palms onto my thighs.
“I’m down.” Chris replies. Matt nods in agreement, setting down his phone and looking over at Nick. His hands resting on the table showcase his hands, silver rings adorning his fingers. I watch as he spins the one on his pinky around.
Nick looks over at me. “You down?” He asks. Free food or starvation? “Yeah sure.” I shrug.
I feel my mouth water at the thought of food. I couldn’t remember the last time I had food, or a real meal. But, I was never gonna go crazy on someone else’s dime.
The teacher dismisses us as we all start walking towards the parking lot. Nick walks by my side as Matt and Chris walk in front of us. “I’m really sorry by the way.” He expresses.
I laugh, shaking my head. “Dude, it’s fine. If I get free food, I couldn't care less honestly.” I admit.
“You can sit in the back with me.” Nick says. He climbs in the back of the car as I get in on the other side. I slide into the seat, placing my bag in between my legs. I settle in but as I look up I see Matt’s eyes staring at me through the rear view mirror.
His eyes move to the road as he starts driving. I bring up my phone, checking if I have anything on my face. Nope. Maybe he was upset because he didn’t want me to come?
Chris starts blasting music, a loud rap song that makes me jolt abruptly. I place my hands over my ears instinctively.
“Shut that shit off.” Matt curses in the now empty car. I pull my gaze up, seeing his hand on the radio button, turning it off.
“NOOOOO PLEASE!” Chris whines. He pulls his hands in the praying motion, giving Matt puppy eyes as we sit at a red light.
“Fine. Quieter and it has to be my playlist.” Matt commands. Chris giggles like a kid on Christmas, pulling up his phone and turning down the volume.
“If you say so…” Chris says.
A quiet, but hype beat starts to play. I don’t recognize the song, furrowing my eyebrows as I watch their reactions. Chris immediately starts singing along as well as Nick. Matt’s cheeks are cherry red, his eyes wide as his lips pursed together.
“DON’T YOU WISH YOU WERE US!” Chris and Nick sing. Chris looks behind, stopping the music completely. He stares at me with his jaw on the floor practically.
“WHY are you NOT singing along?” Chris exclaims, waving his hand dramatically. I shrug at him, “I’ve never heard this song before.” I answer.
All eyes are on me as soon as the words leave my mouth.
“WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN? YOU HAVEN’T SEEN LEMONADE MOUTH?” Nick screams. I shake my head in response, watching his jaw drop impossibly further down.
“YOU’VE SEEN LET IT SHINE AT LEAST, RIGHT?” Chris adds, raising his eyebrows. I lick my lips, sucking them in as I shake my head from left to right. Chris lets out a scream, placing his hands over his face. Nick stays in the same shell-shocked position.
I look up, meeting Matt’s eyes that are also wide, in the rearview mirror. “How have you not seen the best Disney movies of all time?” He exclaims, his voice slightly higher.
His soft tone brings a swarm of butterflies into my gut. I didn’t know he could sound so…friendly?
“I um…I’ve never really seen many Disney movies.” I say.
I could never really afford it. Even when my mom was still around, it was a struggle with bills. Her health declining brought more bills, starting as soon as she got pregnant with me. I was the reason behind her suffering, I watched as she suffered, straining everything to care for me.
But, it wasn’t enough in the end.
Her body simply wouldn’t move, her mind giving out completely. She couldn’t remember me at times. She was forced to stop working as my dad tried to solely support us.
But, it wasn’t enough in the end.
Nothing was ever enough. It was my greatest fear. All I wanted to do was to somehow make it out, become a person with a life revolving around things that mattered to me. Would it ever happen though? I don’t know.
I just want to be enough to make her proud. Be enough for her.
“How?!” Nick’s voice brings me back to reality as I just shrug my shoulders once more. “Just never had Disney, I was honestly on YouTube more than anything as a kid.” I say.
They all exchange looks. “What?” I ask. “We have a YouTube channel actually.” Nick remarks. I’m taken aback by his statement. “Really? What do you do?” I ask.
My eyes dart around, observing. Chris is happily looking out the window, Nick is smiling at me, and Matt is fisting the steering wheel with white knuckles. Is he angry? Is it at me?
I look at his face through the rearview mirror, trying to analyze his face. He’s biting his lips, his eyebrows furrowed with…concern? His eyes shift, meeting mine as his face seems to relax.
I watch as his shoulder fall. I look at his hands, watching his grip loosen.
“What do you want? I was gonna get chicken nuggets, fries, and ice cream.” Nick states. “I’ll just do nuggets and fries, please.” I remark.
Matt pulls up as Nick’s window starts to roll down. I furrow my own eyes, watching as he starts to order. Why is he ordering instead of Matt? I mean, it’s not against any rules.
We continue through the drive thru, Nick handing out the food as we park in the parking lot of the McDonalds. He hands me chicken nuggets, fries, and an ice cream.
“I didn’t get ice cream.” I point out. Nick shrugs, “I punched you in the tit, it’s the least I can do, honestly.” He replies, taking a bite out of a couple of fries.
“Damn, if you weren’t gay I probably would’ve just fell in love.” I joke. The chorus of laughter brings a smile to my face.
Nick’s laugh was reassuring, Chris’s laugh was contagious, but Matt’s laugh…was something else. It was softer than either of the others, a slight squeak at the end of each laugh.
_
We had eaten our food in a fit of laughter. Chris and Nick had bickered nearly the entire time. Matt’s boneless laugh was a sound I could listen to endlessly. We were already driving back to the school, walking out back into the building.
“What class do you have next?” Chris asks, slinging his arm around my shoulders. I let out a surprised noise from the unexpected action. “Chris! Get off of her! Sorry-he knows no boundaries.” Nick exclaims.
Chris moves his arm off of me, huffing in annoyance. We walk further towards the building. “I have Writing 200, and he’s fine. As long as people don’t mistake me for one of your girls, I don’t want that kind of attention.” I joke.
“I have my class right next to it, let’s walk together?” Nick suggests. I nod my head, walking side by side as Matt joins on my other side. We wave goodbye to Chris who pouts leaving.
“I have Writing 200 too.” Matt says.
“We have the same exact schedule then, huh?” I remark.
He looks down at me questioningly, “You didn’t see me? We literally are table partners in English!” I exclaim. His mouth gapes open in an ‘O’ formation as he nods his head.
“Sick, I guess so.” He responds.
He doesn’t explain any further. Why did he leave this morning? I stop myself from asking the invasive question as we wave goodbye to Nick. The classroom is nearly empty except for Mrs. Evans.
“Y/n! Matt! Good to see you both! Please, take a seat. I only assigned seats in the first class because of how many underclassmen were in it, please, feel free to sit wherever!” She exclaims.
Matt gestures to the same table in the back. The same table I started my day with next to him. “Wanna sit together?” He suggests. I feel my stomach clench, my toes cracking as I shift between my feet.
He wants to sit next to me?
“Yeah.” I reply, setting my bag on the same chair as earlier. He places his stuff down, sitting in the chair as I take a seat next to him.
More students start rolling in, filling the seats until it’s nearly a full classroom. Matt suddenly nudges my arm with his elbow, holding out his phone. Ms. Evans is talking, taking attendance.
I read the screen, seeing a groupchat of him and his brothers.
[Nick: invite her over tn for Disney movie plsss]
[Chris: or at least get her number :)]
Chris’s text rolls in fresh, Matt snatching the phone back with a pink hue coating his cheeks. I bite the inside of my cheek, suddenly jolting at the tender pain. He’s staring down at his phone.
I try to get his attention, waiting for him to look back up. His fingers type furiously in his lap. Do I tap him?
I reach out, tugging lightly on his sweatshirt sleeve. His eyes meet mine. A shiver runs down my spine at the lack of distance between us. Pine and spices fill my nose, a scent that makes me want to breathe deeply.
“I’ll come.” I mouth. He nods in response, a tight smile tugging on his lips.
I turn back to the front of the classroom. I desperately want to be closer, smell the relaxing scent of pine and spices once more. I loved perfumes and colognes. I had always wanted one, but it wasn’t a need so I never got the luxury of having one.
No amount of money I could make working a job would amount to a scholarship. I focused completely on school, earning grades while spending hours on schoolwork each night.
Having no friends made that easier, but it was lonely. Although, I had never run into anyone I really wanted to be friends with. The only time I got asked to hang out was getting asked out on a date.
One kid in particular, Jeffery, on the hockey team was super annoying about it. He had asked me out at least five times, never taking a simple no for an answer. I knew I wasn’t ugly and sometimes free food sounded tempting, but I knew what he was really wanting.
I had overheard him talking about how he was ‘definitely gonna get me in bed.’ Long story short, I was never and I’m still never gonna let that happen.
It was different with them. Nick had been so welcoming, Chris had been so happy, and Matt…Matt was Matt?
I wanted to hang out with them, laugh like we did in the car more. It felt like something had clicked into place, teaching me what true fun was. My inner child has been long dead. But, laughing like that made me feel like my younger self would be proud of me.
_
The same, boring lectures ensued about rules and policies. Matt was glued to his phone that was propped in front of his backpack on the desk.
The bell rings as everyone basically starts speed walking-nearly running-to escape school. Matt waits as I finish gathering my stuff as we start walking back to the parking lot.
“Wait, sorry, one second.” Matt says. He stops in his tracks as soon as we stand on the cement outside. He takes a couple of steps sideways as I tilt my head. “What are you doing?” I ask.
I peep over his shoulder, seeing some sort of animation game. “Oh! What is that?” I exclaim.
He looks over, realizing I’m able to see his phone screen. His cheeks are tinted with red as he pulls the phone to his chest. “Pokemon-Go, sorry. We can go.” He mumbles.
He walks slightly in front of me as I struggle to keep pace. Arriving at his car, we hop in, waiting for Nick and Chris. I pull out my phone, opening an app that looks similar.
“Is this it?” I ask, pushing the screen on the console. Matt looks at the screen and then twists his body to look back at me. “You’re serious? I thought you were mocking me, not gonna lie.” He says.
I shake my head, immediately starting to download the app. “No, hell no! It looks fun as fuck! You’re teaching me how to work this though. I’m already confused.” I say.
He laughs as Chris and Nick pile into the car. “Will do.” He responds.
Chris connects his phone to the aux, his phone playing the same song as earlier where it had left off. The next song starts to play as I clap my hands. “Oh my god! I love this song!” I exclaim. It’s Bags by Clario.
Chris snickers, “So does Matt.”
I look up, seeing Matt already staring at me through the mirror. His eyes are wide. “You have good taste.” I compliment. His eyes relax, becoming less visible as a smile spreads across his cheeks.
I feel my own lips curl in reaction. I bob my head to the beat slightly, watching as Matt’s ring-clad fingers tap on the steering wheel.

here’s the OTHER leaker translation I would explode out of existence
listen.
I know, okay?
I know everyone loves this. I know everyone lost their shit for it. But I hate it.
I will admit honestly that it is 70% abject fury over the misuse of one word. Another 20% is frustration over how the fandom reacted to the official translation with such vitriol and how the leaker fueled it with their smug comments. That final 10% amounts to what some might consider pedantic or nitpicky. But I don't care.
This translation sucks. It doesn't sound cool, it doesn't sound threatening, and the leaker's rookie mistakes ruin what makes this moment great for me.
Allow me to elaborate.
The emphasis is on the wrong part
I’ve talked about some of the pronoun differences in this line before, but did you know Katsuki also changes the particles every time?
‘Cause I sure don’t think the leaker noticed. Grammar particles are what determine the relationship between words in a sentence. They pack a lot of punch, denoting subject, object, indirect object, purpose, location, time, origin point, direction of movement, means or method—and a bunch more shit that can be hard to describe.
Word order and particles work together to direct our attention to specific parts of a sentence, emphasizing the importance of what is being said. They are some of the most difficult parts of Japanese for learners to grasp and use with the same ease that native speakers do. I’m acutely aware of this weakness, so I often pay particular attention to them. Let’s break down how each iteration shifts the meaning and emphasis of the base sentence.
First time
Chapter 322 おまが拭えねぇもんは俺たちが拭う omae ga nuguenee mon wa oretachi ga nuguu
Katsuki uses ga with both the second person pronoun for Izuku and the first person plural pronoun for himself and Class 1-A. Ga emphasizes the word that comes directly before it, so this focuses not on the verb itself, but the persons doing the verb. Katsuki's first person plural pronoun oretachi of course means "we," but if you wanted to highlight his literal meaning, he's saying: "the things you cannot handle, me and the people with me will handle."
Second time
Chapter 323 てめーが拭えねーもんはこっちで拭う temee ga nuguenee mon wa kocchi de nuguu
Here, Katsuki retains ga for Izuku’s second person pronoun, but changes both his first person pronoun and its particle, giving us kocchi de. This shifts the implication of who is doing the act—the first time, Katsuki's "we" pronoun highlighted the classmates who accompanied him and acted with him to help save Izuku. But by the time he says this line again, a number of people outside their class have stepped forward to defend Izuku’s return to UA.
Unlike distinctly singular pronouns like ore, kocchi both refers to oneself and something greater than oneself. By switching to this, Katsuki expands that narrow “me and the people with me” into “our side,” presenting the people who support Izuku as a unified force.
You see, kocchi de subtly shifts the verb to being executed by subject(s) defined by a specific characteristic or condition.
Explanations of particle de from Mainichi Nonbiri. The heading and explanation read, "Subject: 'De' is used to denote the subject who deals with or engages in the action expressed by the predicate."
The first example uses jibun de (by oneself) to describe the conditions under which the listener is asked to execute the verb. The third uses gikai de (in the parliament or by the parliament, as a governing body representing many people) to explain the plurality and nature of the subject executing the verb.
The second example uses socchi de, which is the second person "you" version of kocchi, meaning your side. With this, you can see the purpose is to highlight division: "you did that over there on your side of things without any input from me."
Kocchi de as Katsuki uses it likewise creates "sides" by highlighting connection.
These details emphasize Izuku as the person who cannot handle these things and the relationship he has with the people supporting him, a collective Katsuki aligns himself with.
If we maintain this emphasis and the conditions in a literal way, we have: "The things you cannot handle, our side will handle for you."
Third time
Chapter 405 OFA(あいつ)に拭えねーもんはこっちで拭うってなあぁああ!!! OFA (aitsu) ni nuguenee mon wa kocchi de nuguutte naaaa!!!
I want you to look really close at the particle ni.
Then look at the way the first word balloon ends with the particle wa.
And hear me when I say that this does not emphasize Izuku.
Ni is not a particle for emphasis. If Izuku's personal inability to handle AFO were being highlighted, Katsuki could have used には, which I talk about briefly in this post:
The combination of the two particles ni and wa are used to emphasize, compare, and contrast. This is extremely telling just on its own. Izuku is emphasizing the fact that, compared to everyone he could possibly tell, he cannot tell Katsuki this. He might be able to tell other people, but when it comes to Katsuki, he cannot. Ienai does not specify where the limitation stems from, but ni wa sure implies it.
If Katsuki wanted to disparage Izuku in comparison to himself, like "that guy obviously can't handle you, so I'll do it," he would have said something like this. He even could have slapped his own singular pronoun and ga in there (俺が拭う) to emphasize himself as an individual actor. But that's not what he did.
The particle wa tells us what the topic is. Neither Katsuki nor Izuku are the topic in any iteration of this line; they are subjects engaging with the verbs. The topic is "the things OFA (that guy) can't handle."
Now, because every other time Katsuki said this line had ga in it too, wa wasn't quite as strong as it is this third time. If ga emphasizes what comes before it, then wa emphasizes what comes after. It tells us, "this is the topic, now hold onto your seats."
Katsuki is emphasizing the predicate and the verb. What's gonna happen and how it's gonna happen.
He's saying, "our side is gonna fucking crush you."
The wa particle and the separate balloons build tension, suspense, and excitement—which the leaker instantly deflates. By front-loading Katsuki as both topic and subject ("I'm the guy"), the emphasis is no longer on the promise of destruction he will deliver on.
The emphasis is indisputably on the part after the balloon break, so the mention of Izuku ("when that nerd can't handle it all on his own") reads weirdly like an insult. Hell, most of the words the leaker uses are about Izuku's inability to handle the situation, which bloat the second half of the line and effectively kill the momentum.
Fumbling the flow of a line is a common mistake for amateur translators. Sometimes, it's hard to avoid because Japanese grammar is often the inverse of English grammar; maintaining the original order may render it awkward or even unintelligible.
But that is not the case here.
pikahlua's literal translation
There's no reason to reorder the clauses. You can spruce up the wording, but the lines are perfectly understandable and effective in this order even at their most literal.
The leaker chose to reorder the lines this way, and their translation is worse for it.
Viz Comparison
Official translation by Viz
After what I've said about particles, pacing, and emphasis, I think you can plainly see that the official translator understood these details and made his own choices to highlight them.
Any time you get text with furigana (explained here), you have to decide how to incorporate those dual pieces of information into the text. He could have translated this as "that guy couldn't keep you in the ground," but instead he prioritized the reference to OFA.
By doing this, Viz's translation avoids the implication of insult towards Izuku that the leaker falls prey to.
He also made the choice to translate kocchi as "we."
First, I’m bringing this post back around to remind people that kocchi is a pronoun of ambiguous plurality. This means that an interpretation of “we” is just as correct as an interpretation of “I.” Readers may interpret it differently, but on simply linguistic grounds, they are of equal validity. You will often see this kind of ambiguous language used in Japanese, even with characters that are forthright. The reason is one part cultural expectation that the listener will read between the lines, and one part a willingness to accept two things as simultaneously true. This exists and is frequently found in English as well, there just isn’t a direct parallel for kocchi itself.
A number of people were infuriated by this, because they felt some sort of bkdk moment was erased by Katsuki saying "we" rather than "I."
Yet it seemed like these same people were also mad one week prior when the leaker and the official translator worded Katsuki's rallying cry slightly differently.
Chapter 404. Leaker, left. Official, right.
The claim there was apparently that the official translator was ignoring Katsuki's character development.
And like, which is it, guys? Do you want him centering the collective or himself?
The fact is that the official translation's characterization of Katsuki in the final battle is internally consistent with itself, while the leaker's is all over the goddamn place. Let us never forget that the leaker was just straight up WRONG here while the official got it exactly right.
Chapter 408. Leaker, left. Official, right.
People were losing their shit that Viz made Katsuki "insult himself" and "expect failure" as though he's never used temee to refer to himself self-deprecatingly before.
And then the leaker just had to pretend that didn't happen in the next fucking chapter, while the official got to correctly reiterate their interpretation like they were taking a victory lap.
Chapter 409. Leaker, left. Official, right.
All of this makes it unbelievably rich for the leaker to go and say shit like this:
The leaker is an amateur translator. They spent ages stealing an artist's work and releasing it illegally for a profit with shoddy translations and misleading, even outright false "summaries."
Based on the nature of their translation mistakes, it is obvious to me that they are not fluent in Japanese, yet here they are bragging about their inability to understand how kocchi could mean "we."
Right before the line in question, Katsuki emphasizes himself as an individual in declaring himself to be the final boss.
Chapter 405 俺がラスボスだ AFO!! ore ga rasu bosu da AFO!!
And then, by using ってな, Katsuki is basically quoting himself.
"I said we were gonna handle what that guy couldn't, didn't I!?"
This suggests he is repeating the established meaning for emphasis, not changing it. If kocchi was plural when he said it in chapter 323, it's reasonable for it to still be plural here. Katsuki is not ignoring himself as an individual by doing this; he is rubbing it in AFO's face that neither he nor Izuku are solitary actors fighting this battle alone, they both belong to something greater than themselves.
I'm gonna step up on a soapbox for a bit.
I am kinda tired of people calling Japanese vague. I often see it used to imply Japanese is inherently hard to understand or that it doesn't have the capacity for specificity. Like any language, Japanese can be used to express specific, clear, and direct information. While it is true Japanese culture values indirectness as a way to maintain harmony, I would like to challenge the ethnocentricism I feel sometimes goes unaddressed in this topic.
Japanese is less tolerant of repetition and verbal excess than English is; information that has been established should only be repeated for a purpose. Japanese speakers expect their conversation partners to maintain awareness of context, social expectations, and specific interpersonal information to grasp the intended meaning of their words. Specificity is doled out when it is warranted or desired.
Specificity divides one thing from another, drawing lines in the sand and saying "this is this, and that is that." English often requires repetitive specificity to even be grammatically comprehensible. And while this might not be directly related, many English-speaking countries tend to have a more individualistic outlook on society than collectivist countries like Japan.
To me, "vague" often smacks of a value judgment: "there should be division here, and there isn't."
I said earlier that kocchi creates division by highlighting sides, us vs. them, but when people press on and ask, "but did he say we or I? which did he REALLY mean?" I just want to say that really? truly? he meant both. all of the above.
I think it is unproductive to think of Japanese as vague just because it doesn't exclude possibilities as often or as strongly as English does. I think it is a lot more useful and interesting to think of Japanese as expansive.
Why should there be division between Katsuki and the people fighting by his side? Why should he separate himself from the people who saved his life and risked their own in relentless pursuit of their common, heroic goal?
Why is it unacceptable to imagine an "I" belonging so sincerely and wholly to a "we" that their voices are one?
Katsuki's words reflect the fact that this fight being fought by a collective, a team.
In this context, OFA is a weapon in their arsenal, just as Katsuki himself is.
He is a force of nature, an agent of their willpower.

Chapter 404
He rode upon the winds of their prayers, ushered on by Izuku's hopes
and his own regrets,

to change the course of fate itself.
For much of the series, Katsuki is our beacon of individualism, of defiant refusal to bend to the will and expectations of others.
But Katsuki is also our image of victory. He shows us how to face our failures and change our hearts. He is our proof that rejecting others only hurts us in the end—his love for Izuku and Izuku's love for him is the story's greatest proof that as human beings, we are not better alone, we are better with each other. Other people change us, inspire us, and we do the same for them.
We need each other. We belong to each other.
It is in this final battle where Katsuki becomes his truest self, overcoming every obstacle in his path, making up for every painful regret in his heart, and utilizing every single thing in his grasp to save and win.
If Katsuki ever truly belonged to something bigger than himself, it is in this moment right here.
English divides the one from the many, and while that has its benefits, I think there is real, honest beauty to be found in a word that smooths those lines in the sand until there is no distinction at all.
That's who the fucking "we" is, rukasu.
Now onto my next gripe.
Katsuki is supposed to sound badass here
Frankly, the fan fury surrounding Viz's use of "we" completely overshadowed the fact that the phrase "One For All couldn't keep you in the ground" is fucking metal.
It rules. I'm fucking jealous I didn't write those words. It is such a good translation and it packs so much punch and I wouldn't have thought of it in a thousand years.
The official translator focuses his efforts on genre-specific tone translation, and sometimes he really nails it. I will freely admit that I find his style grating or overwrought at times, and indeed, one of his key weaknesses is that the flavor of comic-book dialogue he pulls from can sound one generation too old to be cool.
One of the most damning examples of this is him having Katsuki utter the word "bub"—
Chapter 406
—which I think no English-speaker under the age of 30 had actually heard before Deadpool & Wolverine came out.
Honestly, if you just read Wolverine comics from the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, you can see the character archetype he leans into for Katsuki's dialogue. 405's tagged-on "—and then some!!" is straight out of American action movies.
But the main point here is that Katsuki is taunting AFO and threatening him. He blows up AFO's face, announces himself as the final boss, then vows to kick his ass to death on behalf of everyone. It's amazing.
The line sounds cool as fuck in Japanese. The "naaaa" flourish at the end is nearly untranslatable in any direct way that still captures the appeal and impact of it.
I tend to think of sentence enders like this as flavor text or tone tags. To properly convey them in English, you may have to add a bunch of words, and you have to choose them carefully.
All of this is to say, the official translation tries pretty hard to make Katsuki sound cool. Do they succeed? I think to an extent, they do.
I actually think it's possible the translator did recognize the callback, but wasn't satisfied with the effect of repeating it. You can see that "finish the job" is supposed to link Izuku's actions to theirs, while also sounding grandiose and final.
The Viz translator might've simply prioritized showcasing the cool-guy threat while maintaining the collectivist angle, rather than matching the callback word for word. I don't really think that's the best choice, but I can see why it might be made.
The leaker's translation doesn't make any real effort to up the ante. Maybe this line is cool to somebody, but it ain't me.
In fact, are we ever gonna acknowledge that the leaker's translation just scoops up most of its wording from the official release of chapters 322 and 323?
"I'm the guy who steps in when that nerd can't handle it all on his own!!"
The leaker was not responsible for these translations, but just look at how other people tried to grapple with Katsuki's metaphor.
In fact, the only person whose choice of words prophetically matched Viz was pikahlua, four days before the official release:
And even then, you can see that "step in when" is unique to Viz.
I'm not saying that similarities in translation are unacceptable or that directly referencing the official release is bad, but I do find it truly incredible they had the gall to shit-talk the official translator after cheating off his damn homework.
The leaker basically contributed six words: "I'm the guy who" and "that nerd." I personally disagree with "the guy who" as a translation addition, just because I think it too strongly isolates him in a way that using "I" and "I'm" by themselves do not, but it wouldn't have been terrible if they had also maintained the original clause order: "One For All couldn't handle you... but I'm the guy who—", something like that.
This brings us to my final gripe.
Katsuki did not say “that nerd.”
The leaker made that shit up, they inserted it for no reason and ignored the two pronouns the original text actually provides, OFA and aitsu (that guy).
In the manga, Katsuki has never called Izuku a nerd to villains, not once. It is rare for him to use it while speaking to someone other than Izuku, period. It’s an insulting pet name he uses towards Izuku or while muttering angrily to himself about Izuku.
To be clear, the narrator who uses "shitty nerd" is not Katsuki, they merely validate the accuracy of his nickname for Izuku. Yes, I just linked to my tag for the whole damn 348 chapter, because I've argued against this theory a lot, just read 'em all, it's a good time.
By my count, he only uses it once while talking to Todoroki in chapter 42 and once to Ochako in a 5-page bonus chapter for the first character guide, set shortly after chapter 65. Both take place very early in the series and both are examples of his intense grudge against Izuku.
Did you know that the last time Katsuki uses "nerd" towards Izuku directly is in chapter 320?
Who's ignoring Katsuki's character development again?
The fact is the word doesn't exist in 405's text, and there just isn't precedent for him to say it to All For One.
Trash-talk doesn’t work if your opponent has no clue what the hell you’re talking about. AFO would have no idea who “that nerd” is even supposed to be, because they were not already discussing Izuku, unlike both canon instances of Katsuki using it in conversation with others. The audibly-pronounced aitsu just means "that guy over there (physically near neither you nor me)" and you could argue that is unclear, too, but it's relatively neutral and context clues everyone in to the fact that he means Izuku, with whom he just did an explosive, flying duo move.
I think some bkdk fans were keen to see him use the tsundere insult we all love so much, but it just doesn't read right to me. Writing an insult towards Izuku into this kind of line, even an affectionate one, misdirects the aggression and fails to highlight how Katsuki makes a mockery of AFO during their fight.
I really do think it undercuts how, in his big moment of taunting the greatest villain in history, Katsuki brings up making good on a vow he made to Izuku.
And let's not forget that there is a definitive moment where Katsuki references his relationship with Izuku while taunting AFO:
Chapter 406
To roast the villain for his stupidity in misidentifying him, Katsuki loudly announces himself to be Bakugou no Kacchan.
Katsuki proudly identifies himself with the cutesy nickname his childhood friend has used for him their whole damn lives. That's a far cry from somebody who'd insult Izuku just to hype himself up.
So, no, I don't accept "that nerd." I think the leaker just added it to make their translation sound cooler, but they did so at the expense of Katsuki's character. It's tacky, cheap, and not based in any honest reading of the text.
Put the nickname in your fanworks however brings you joy. Really, go for it, I know I sure do!
But let's not pretend Katsuki said it here.
In conclusion
Katsuki's dialogue offers a unique array of challenges to translators. I would never argue that he is easy to translate, and so much of his characterization is expressed in the minutiae of what he says. Much of his dialogue contains layers of meaning, and any translator is going to have to make a call about how to interpret those layers and what to highlight.
I made this post to say my piece about a translation tons of English-speaking fans love. In the process of dissecting what frustrated me about it, I researched and studied and learned so much.
And to be honest with you, I don't know that I have a solution for this line. I thought of a ton of options:
One For All couldn't keep you in the ground... but we're here to step in and finish the job once and for all!!
I promised we'd step in when that guy couldn't handle it on his own... and I fucking meant it!!
After all, what One For All can't handle... he's got us here to handle for him!!
One For All couldn't stop you… so it's a good thing that guy's got us here to step in and finish the job!!
If the guy with One For All can't get it done alone... then we're here to take you down for him!!
Maybe One For All couldn't handle the job alone... but our side is still gonna kick your ass!!
Some of them are very fun, and each highlights a different set of priorities: collectivism, connection, coolness, intimidation, and so on.
But you could pick apart my words the same way I picked apart the leaker's and Viz's.
There will never be a one true translation. There can't be. For as many readers as there are, there are just as many interpretations to what Katsuki's words mean and what is important about them.
In every translation, you face loss—loss of information, loss of specificity, loss of ambiguity, loss of emotionality, loss of cultural meaning. Your job as a translator is to lose as little as possible, and to make sure you can stomach the things you do lose.
You also gain things in translation. New meanings, new layers, new cultural implications. By showing the audience what you see and choosing how you say it to them, you add something of yourself to the work. You can't not.
As a translator, I want to keep learning and trying and going beyond. I want to do right by the things I translate. I want to share the things I love with other people and figure out, as best I can, how to make them see what is beautiful about it.
Unlike Bakugou Katsuki, we translators can never achieve a perfect victory.
But it's always worth trying.
#I love Bakugou Katsuki#I love him with all my heart#he is my hero#he has given me so much#volume 40 comes out officially in English tomorrow#and if this line gets revised I'll laugh my ass off#and probably think about this all over again#really I'll never stop thinking about this stuff#because as much shit-talking as I'm doing here#it really is so so exciting to see how other people translate things#I love language#I love manga#and I love Bakugou no Kacchan#image of victory#and perfect boy#a creature of love#who loved another boy so truly and so deeply#that I dedicated hours and months and years of my life to learning Japanese even better#so I could see him properly#thank you Kacchan#and thank you to everyone who reads my blog#I think this is the longest fucking post on my blog ever so if you made it to the end#seriously#thank you#mha 322#mha 323#mha 404#mha 405#mha 406#mha 408

I struggle to convey to people just how toxic Iron Might was for the series. It was NOT cool and it was NOT hype. It was a straight up betrayal of the themes of the old generation stepping down to light the torch for the next. All Might did the equivalent of taking food out of Class A's mouths so that HE could get personal glory. HE gets to fight his nemesis, while using a setting breaking armor that he shouldn't have that logically should have taken years to produce. It also provided confirmation that apparently All Might doesn't teach or care about Class B and neither does the author, because none of All Might's moves referenced people from the other class. Before it was highly ambiguous. We see Izuku's POV mostly and he doesn't hang out with Class B, so maybe All Might trains them when we're not looking. Monoma never complained about Class A getting special treatment, right? Well, actually, they do. He was right. Class A is the favored class. Why couldn't we have just had all of Class A lined up to throw some hands and duel AFO? We get to the same end place with Stain showing up for the assist and Bakugo getting the final blow if we must, because Bakugo blowing up a baby was certainly a choice! They had a built in excuse to let Class A stand a chance here. If AFO is being rewinded in time, why wouldn't his stolen quirk factors also be rewound? Those aren't a natural part of him. If the dude actively was losing powers and techniques as he got rewound, he'd get progressively weaker. Your post about Momo and Tsuyu being left off the thing reminded me of this. Why aren't these two more popular? Because they don't get to DO ANYTHING. The fights in this series aren't anything to write home about already, but the series didn't even want to give them anything. A "big moment" in this series is something like Kaminari being used to block a lightning attack from a guy and display the ability to absorb electricity when he couldn't do that before. Okay, and? Does he get to go on a rampage with this absorbed power? Do we see him demolish a battalion of guys with a mega charged indiscriminate shock, perhaps having something like 4.4 million volts? No, the story just moves on to the more important people. This story catfished us. The school setting would make you think you were watching something like Assassination Classroom, but actually it was just Naruto but the side characters get treated even worse.
Yeah, I have a lot of problems with Iron Might, and I think it took away more from the endgame than added to it:
the suit broke the world-building and previous power scaling
AM comboing all of Class A quirks of kids he never interacted with for several chapters overshadowed the class A combos in Ch 322 (which lasted for like half a chapter)
The themes were just backtracked from AM who learnt to move on without a quirk and wanting to live to becoming suicidal again and only seeing his own value if he can fight (and sadly that came back again with Izuku's flip-flop ending)
I really hated everything about IronMight and I think the armored suit should have first appeared in the epilogue as Izuku's earned ending - all the quirks he studied, the Class A bonds, the relationships he built with Melissa and Mei etc. In my mind, the suit would have been awesome and more fitting for Deku than for All Might.
I also agree that the balance of focus in the end between the adults and kids were absolutely horrible. Not only All Might, but Endeavor and Hawks also didn't need to hog so many chapters, especially because they didn't add that much new explorations to the characters, while the kids desperately needed highlight moment and awesome fights.
I think what he did to fans of popular characters like Kirishima, Momo or Kaminari who stuck around for 10 years waiting for their fave to get a nice highlight or heartfelt moment in the end was really a letdown. I understand if he's personally more invested in some characters than others, but this is basic respect to his fans to show that he knows that there is someone out there who is most excited to see what Ojirou gets to do in the end and he gives them something.
For how much they marketed Class A and sold those characters, and are still trying to make money off of them and off of people's love for them and longing for content is really disgusting. Hori knows what his fans wanted, but in the end, he just focused on what he personally enjoyed. And it did a lot of harm to the franchise and left a lot of fans with a bad taste. And it's really sad.

jayce x viktor [322][AO3]
summary: Viktor has left and Jayce is left with the pieces of himself.
tags: jayvik, angst, set right after viktor leaves, drabble, jayce in mourning teehee
a/n: yipeeee! pain. sped written in the middle of a class lecture so ngyehegheh it's rushed. but absolutely loved this scene. had to.
Jayce had been all open-mouthed cry with no wail. That tormented sculpture of a face, downturned and deformed by grief, while remaining silent and unnoticed. But Viktor noticed. He always noticed.
Now there would be no Viktor. The aftermath of the bombing had sequestered the man into those hexcore confines Jayce had tried desperately to decode. And one day stumbled into two, stumbled into three, and fell and scraped itself into two weeks—maybe his partner would not awake. The thought clutched and crawled up his chest, a wilderness thing that stole rest and appetite.
Even as Viktor woke and clambered out of comatose, he didn’t really return.
Hesitation made Jayce recoil for a moment. Viktor’s different. Subdued. He regards Jayce with a sort of objectivity he hadn’t worn since they first met, as though he’s taking in facts—square jawed, strong brows, shock-slacked mouth. But empty somewhere inside, devoid of the weight sentiment gave.
And there’s that final blow, the grip that wrenched at Jayce’s guts and pulled his heart nearer his feet.
It was affection that held us together.
The one thing he could not comprehend. Had that been the body of their… friendship, relationship, partnership, whatever it had morphed into, a frame of a creature parading around a decomposing heart?
Viktor’s ghost remained in the lab, trailing behind Jayce as he tidied up the space. Perhaps if the desk was clear, his mind would find clarity; if he watered the one plant they had, maybe he too wouldn’t look so withered; that if he mended the little inventions they’d cobbled together, his heart would follow suit.
He’d curled over his knees at one hour, the heaving occupying his time, just breath after breath remaining futile. Hollow. Something else had been there, he swore. Something full and whole. Which, it seems, decidedly walked out the door with Viktor.
When did affection become the last thread? When did affection become insufficient?

Guys,Ochaco knows Izuku isn't into her. Like,I think she is beyond well aware.
In chapter 322 when Izuku faints and Bakugo catches him.
Everyone but her and Todoroki are concerned. They know Izuku needs Bakugo in that moment, especially Ochaco.
she knows who makes Izuku smile the most.
Like in chapter 8,Izuku sings Bakugo praises right in front of Ochaco, she saw how personal Izuku and Bakugo's feelings were. That's why Izuku's complements were so specific. Unlike his complements for Ochaco.
That's probably why she looks a little annoyed, because Izuku misunderstood what she was trying to say,and how...impersonal the complements were,I mean, "Your hair-style suits you," BITCH,this is sadly one of their most romantic moments too. (I genuinely feel bad for Izuchakos, mainly cuz all the hateful antis are giving them false hope.)
Honestly,Izuchako is so underdeveloped, like,I understand if you like the dynamic,I understand that, but you can't sit here and say that their relationship is deep and meaningful and is going to be cannon because they blush next to each other. (Izuku blushes around every girl in the first few seasons, and then he doesn't even blush when BOOBS are in his face,if anything he looks pissed.)
I mean Izuku's never seemed to like Hatsme very much. But,still.
Ochaco Is extremely aware that Izuku is not into her,she knows Izuku is into explosive blondes. I personally think that the only people who know Izuku's feelings for Bakugo are romantic are,AFO,Compress,Todoroki, and Ochaco. I think the rest of Class A knows the two are special to each other, but I don't think they know it's romantic. (Why did I say Compress? He called Izuku out on his possessive nature for Bakugo. The villains just have really good gay-dars.)

HEADQUARTERS
COMMUNICATION ZONE
EUROPEAN THEATER OF OPERATIONS
AG 322 X 353 XSGS APO 887
26 December 1944
SUBJECT: Volunteers for Training and Assignment as Reinforcements.
TO: Commanding General, Southern Line of Communications.
Commanding General, United Kingdom Base.
Section Commanders, Communications Zone.
1. The Supreme Commander desires to destroy the enemy forces and end hostilities in this theater without delay. Every available weapon at our disposal must be brought to bear upon the enemy. To this end the Theater Commander has directed the Communications Zone Commander to make the greatest entire orgnization in an effort to produce able bodied men for the front lines. This process of selection has been going on for some time but it is entirely possible that many men themselves, desiring to volunteer for front line service, may be able to point out methods in which they can be replaced in their present jobs. Consequently, Commanders of all grades will receive voluntary applications for transfer to the Infantry and forward them to higher authority with recommendations for appropriate type of replacement. This opportunity to volunteer will be extended to all soldiers without regard to color or race, but preference will normally be given to individuals who have had some basic training in Infantry. Normally, also, transfers will be limited to the grade of Private and Private First Class unless a noncommissioned officer requests a reduction.
2. In the event that the number of suitable Negro volunteers exceeds the replacement needs of Negro combat units, these men will be suitable incorporated in other organizations so that their service and their fighting spirit me be efficiently utilized.
3. This letter may be read confidentially to the troops and made available in Orderly Rooms. Every assistance must be promptly given qualified men who volunteer for this service.

Now I don't really hate or dislike Bakugo character at all. But one issue I have always had with his character is that he never apologized to what he did to Deku. For all the bullying he did. People tend to forget that he told him to end his life. In the first episode of the anime.
Another thing that I don't like is that they don't do anything about his short temper. There are times where he did physically harm Deku. I have only watched the anime and have not read the manga.
So I don't know if it's different in the manga. That's my cents on it.
I am not sure how far you're into the anime, but in both the anime and the manga, we get quite a badly written apology from bakugo. This is in chapter 322 of the manga and season 6 of the anime during izuku's vigilante arc.
Now, many have covered why the bakugo apology sucks and here are some meta posts I recommend you look at if you want a deeper read into that topic.
I understand that you stated that you don't particularly dislike bakugo so I Will give a bit of a disclaimer that some of these posts might get a bit ranty or overly critical/hateful of bakugo as a character
If you want a bigger rant or some more diversified bakugo critical opinions, I recommend checking @anti-katsuki-lounge blog.
The whole bakugo suicide baiting situation incident in chapter 1 is never mentioned again throughout the manga even in bakugo's apology, which causes many to forget it or to excuse it using justification such as "izuku forgave bakugo" or "he wasn't affected by it so stop bringing it up" and I don't think horikoshi even gives what he wrote in the first manga chapter the time of day to fully delve into how harmful suicide baiting is and he later ends up dropping the ball in truly exploring how bakugo's bullying affected izuku as a person making him more flinchy, insecure and an individual with low self-esteem. This is why when many meta blogs talk about izuku and bakugo's relationship, they end up being a bit critical in that regard and the fact that izuku is essentially robbed of any introspection in the 3rd act of MHA literally having him not react or think about bakugo's apology at all but instead he faints and we get all Might saying that izuku will forgive bakugo because that's who he is or something along those lines in an earlier chapter 284 if I remember it right.

Furthermore, the narrative treatment of bakugo's short temper is something that I have seen a few people talk about. In the beginning of the manga bakugo's aggressive behaviour had clear concequences and was something that made him intentionally unlikeable while also endangering lives in some cases like what he did in the usj arc or in the training battles collapsing an entire building. The manga pages below are literally all before the 20th chapter of the series, and we see bakugo being this aggressive while it is painted in a clear, unfavourable light.

However, as the series progresses bakugo's aggression really doesn't chang except the narrative light surrounding it does change depicting his violent behaviour in more of a gag and jokey manner where even class 1a and the fandom adapts the belief of "oh this is just bakugo being bakugo." This causes scenes such as these to not be criticised as much as bakugo's earlier actions would have been.

Tldr: I heavily agree with your two cents.

Achaemenid Kings List & Commentary
The Achaemenid Empire (c. 550-330 BCE) was the first great Persian political entity in Western and Central Asia which stretched, at its peak, from Asia Minor to the Indus Valley and Mesopotamia through Egypt. It was founded by Cyrus II (the Great, r. c. 550-530 BCE) whose vision of a vast, all-inclusive Persian Empire was, more or less, maintained by his successors.
The Persians arrived in the region of modern-day Iran as part of a migratory group of Aryans (meaning “noble” or “free” and referencing a class of people, not a race). The Aryans – made up of many tribes such as the Alans, Bactrians, Medes, Parthians, and Persians, as well as others – settled in the area which became known as Ariana (Iran) – “the land of the Aryans”. The tribe which eventually became known as the Persians settled at Persis (modern-day Fars) which gave them their name.
Artaxerxes V (r. 330-329 BCE) was the short-lived throne name of Bessus, satrap of Bactria, who assassinated Darius III and proclaimed himself king. Alexander the Great found the dead or dying Darius III (the original accounts vary on this) in a cart where Bessus had left him and gave him a proper burial with all honors. Afterwards, Alexander had Bessus executed and took for himself the honor of the title Shahanshah, the king of kings of the Achaemenid Empire.
Conclusion
Although the Achaemenid Empire was no longer what it had been under Darius I, it was still intact when Alexander conquered it. He attempted a synthesis of Greek and Persian cultures by marrying his soldiers to Persian women, elevating Persian officers to high rank in his army, and comporting himself as a Persian king. His efforts were not appreciated by the Greek/Macedonian army and, after his death in 323 BCE, his vision was abandoned. Since he had named no clear successor at the time of his death, his generals went to war with each other to claim supremacy.
These wars (known as the Wars of Diadochi, 322-275 BCE), resulted, in part, in the rise of the Seleucid Empire (312-63 BCE) under Alexander's general Seleucus I Nicator (r. 305-281 BCE). The Seleucid Empire occupied approximately the same regions as the Achaemenid and, though it rose to a position of strength, gradually lost territory, first to the Parthians and then later to Rome. The Seleucids were succeeded by the Parthian Empire (247 BCE- 224 CE) which fell to the Sassanian Empire (224-651 CE). The Sassanians revived the best aspects of the Achaemenid Empire and would become the greatest expression of Persian culture in the ancient world.
The Sassanian Empire preserved the culture of the Achaemenids and, even after its fall to the invading Muslim Arabs, this culture would endure and spread throughout the ancient world. Many aspects of life in the modern day, from the seemingly mundane of birthday parties, desserts, and teatime to the more sublime of monotheism, mathematics, and aspects of art and architecture, were developed by the Sassanians drawing on the model of the Achaemenid Empire.

Do you think Bakugo’s redemption was really well handled overall?
I think it was handled relatively well until Ch 322 (his apology), though there were ups and downs for sure.
Highlights were: DvK2, Remedial arc, the foreshadowing in the Endeavor internship arc, Bakugou Rising (and the previous chapter), and then Bakugou role overall in the OFA vs Class A arc.
The low point for me was definitely the JTA.
I feel like - as with everything else - Act 3 was a step down in writing quality. I was not a fan of how the final war arc mixed in that one-sided Deku-centric pining guilt into Bakugou's fights, or treating his battle death as "reborn into pureness".
I also disliked how the epilogue handled his guilt. I didn't like that the hospital scene made Deku's loss of quirk about Bakugou's feelings and renewed guilt and definitely wasn't a fan of framing the hero suit as a further redemption tool for Bakugou.
I think these writing choices all led to the awkward place where Ch 431 left them as ex-rivals and ex-childhood friends.
I think it would have been much better to have a post-apology talk about Deku's feelings and the epilogue would have had Katsuki supporting 100% Deku to pursue his dream even without a quirk but without acting like a fairy godmother in the process and more like a real partner.

Resisting Project 2025's Attacks Queer and Trans Students
What is Project 2025? Project 2025 is a document produced by The Heritage Foundation, an American right-wing think tank, outlining a conservative political plan they hope to see implemented by the next Republican president (now President-Elect Donald Trump).
What does Project 2025 say about education broadly? Project 2025 suggests a wide variety of extreme measures to be taken against progressive values in public schools from promoting "school choice" (policies that, in reality, do not improve student outcomes and make education into a competitive market rather than a public good) to rolling back nondiscrimination regulations to dissolving the Department of Education entirely. Many of Project 2025's proposed policies would leave minoritized students more vulnerable to discrimination in schools and some policies support discrimination against them outright (see below).
What does Project 2025 say about queer and trans rights in school? Project 2025 makes a few proposals and claims regarding gender and sexuality:
Schools should "[reject] gender ideology" in the name of "safeguarding civil rights" (page 322)
Title IX protections (which are in place to prevent discrimination on the basis of sex in educational environments) should be rolled back (page 331)
The attempt to add a "non-binary" option when collecting school data should be rescinded (page 322)
"Sex" under Title IX should be defined to mean "only biological sex recognized at birth" (page 333)
There is "no scientific basis" for the idea that sex should be "redefin[ed]" as "sexual orientation and gender identity," a claim which they don't even attempt to cite a source for (page 333)
Being trans is a "social contagion" that causes young AFAB people to want to mutilate their bodies (pages 345-346)
Schools should forbid public education employees from using their students' preferred names and pronouns without parental consent (page 346)
We might expect to see some sources cited for these bold claims and proposals, but for all forty-five pages of the "Department of Education" section of this document, there are only 19 footnotes.
Project 2025 is an under-researched, ultra-conservative playbook that lays out the groundwork for how we can best discriminate against the most vulnerable members of our communities.
Now that Trump has been elected, what can we do to prepare for and resist Project 2025's proposals for education?
Understand what we're up against: Reading through the document itself is a disheartening process, but if you're in a place to do so, it's worth a try. The authors of Project 2025 tend to be pretty mask-off---they'll tell you all about the harm they intend to do. If you'd prefer not to waste hours of your life reading a document that periodically drops phrases so cringy they might make your soul leave your body (see: "woke diversicrats"), you can just read a summary. The ACLU has a good one that can be accessed here.
Teachers, get active in your union: Project 2025 is explicitly anti-union. It even accuses two of the US's biggest teachers' unions of "promot[ing] radical racial and gender ideologies in schools" (page 342). Working class solidarity is how we achieve the collective power we'll need to fight these policies in our schools. (Here is how the Chicago Teacher's Union is practicing resistance---a case study!)
Build community and support networks: This could mean making a point to talk to a few new people while you're attending a protest, attending school meetings with a group of fellow progressives, breaking up capitalist markets by planning/attending a mutual aid fair, or just chatting and laughing with some friends. The goal of fascism is to make us feel isolated. Don't let them succeed.
Take care of yourself: Project 2025's proposals are scary, especially for people whose very identities are being targeted. Don't let anyone tell you that you're "failing at activism" if you need to take a step back.
Teachers (and parents of minoritized students), assure your students and kids that you are on their side: If you're able, hang up a pride flag in your classroom/house, include an optional question about students' preferred pronouns on your introduction survey, and/or include minoritized authors and history in your classes. Have your students learn about Stonewall, read some short stories by James Baldwin, analyze Audre Lorde's poems, and/or introduce them to your favorite queer/BIPOC/disabled/immigrant authors and thinkers. Representation matters!
Sign the ACLU's petition to stop Project 2025: It's important to show lawmakers that Project 2025's radical and dangerous ideas do not represent what we want for our country.
Donate: The Southern Poverty Law Center, ACLU, and lots of other civil rights organizations are fighting hard against Project 2025 and the Trump Administration's policy proposals. Consider sending a donation to an organization that aligns with your values.
No matter how hard Trump and his cronies fight, LGBTQ+ people will always exist in our schools. They will never get rid of us and they will never drown out our voices. We will always demand to be safe, accepted, and included and we will win.

Frieren timeline
The only timeline available on the wiki isn’t super fleshed out with exact dates and counting backwards etc. So I decided to make my own.
Notes:
1. Spoilers for up to manga ch119 (the most recent at this time)
2. Even if it’s likely just a rough measure (“three hundred years ago”), I’m gonna assume when doing my math that it was exactly 300 years, because otherwise I can’t do most of the math
3. I skip most events that don’t have an exact year, eg Fern and Stark respective being taken in by Heiter and Eisen. I do make some estimates (eg Sein’s birthday, we only know he’s in mid-30s so he can’t have been born any further back than year xx).
4. Standardised year 0 as the year the demon king was defeated
5. Realised about 2/3rds through that I could be writing down chapter citations but at that point it was too late lol sorry
behold!
-3,000: Earliest mentioned date, by Frieren re: dwarf beliefs; most people believed the dead turn to dust, so pre-Goddess. Unclear when Goddess actually starts appearing.
[Emperor Boshaft alive, so is Milliarde, Frieren in village]
-1,000: Frieren becomes Flamme’s apprentice
-950: Flamme passes away*
-510: the last time Frieren fought a demon (quite likely Macht, as in year 80 she says 600 years ago, which would be -520. What’s a decade here and there?)
-420: Frieren restores her golden arm
-422: Aura became one of the seven sages of destruction
-322: the last time Frieren saw another elf, Grandfather Voll starts to protect village
-222: the last time Kraft saw another elf
-120: Fass finds Emperor Boshaft’s alcohol, Gehn starts working on his village’s bridge
-26: Himmel is born
-11?: Hero of the South visits Frieren and dies a year later; tells her she’ll meet Himmel soon**
-10: Hero Party sets out from capital
[Hero Party kills Immortal Bose and pushes back Aura sometime during this period]
-3: Goddess arc (Himmel is 23), Hero Party seals Qual***
0: Demon King defeated, Era Meteors, Macht starts to serve^
2: Denken born
20: Macht is braceleted
28: Continental Magic Association started (at latest), Lernen was first first-class mage
29: Denken came to Auberst with his wife (who died when he was in his twenties); Denken’s wife presumably passed away very soon after
30: last sighting of a Darkness Dragon (per random apothecary); Weis turned to gold and sealed
39: Earliest possible Sein birthday (he would be 40); humanity learns to fly
45: Wirbel born
50: 2nd Era Meteors; Himmel passes away; Aura reappears, demon activity increases in north and baby Wirbel makes promise
61: Stark is born earlier in the year after winter; Fern is born some time after harvest festival but before the last three months of the year
68: Graf Granat’s son dies in war against Aura
69: Sein’s friend Gorilla left
70: Frieren and Fern meet
74: Heiter collapses
75: Stark runs away from Eisen
76: Heiter passes away; Frieren and Fern set out on their journey
76.5: half a year spent looking for blue moonweed
77: Fern turns 16 (after spring, latest autumn)
78: 3+ Months spent at seaside town cleaning beach
79: wintered with Kraft, Stark’s 18th bday (after spring), meet Sein around harvest festival (time is a bit funky since it gets cold and then warm after this?)^^
80: El Dorado arc
81: first chapter after El Dorado. As of ch119, we are here, 31 years after Hero Himmel’s death!
and in the future…
97: Tod’s “curse” will engulf the star?
100: Next meteor shower. Fern and Stark would be 39.
149: Frieren promised to be back at hero’s sword village by this time
1079: Frieren may return to the Continental Mage Association :)
*Assuming she died soon after Frieren’s last shown convo with her where she said “it’s only been 50 years”
**Unclear just when was the Frieren/Hero of the South meeting, so it could technically be anywhere before, but -11 is the most recent it could be
***Frieren says it’s been 80 years in year 77. If she’s being precise then this is the date—but I have doubts as Qual was sealed in the Central Lands, and Hero Party should be well into the Northern Plateau near the goddess monument by this point.
^Technically I think Macht starts to serve a leetle bit before the demon king is defeated, but no time frame given for how long it took Macht and Glück to have those convos
^^To be more precise: they start the year’s winter with Kraft. Then it gets warm, and Stark’s birthday happens. Harvest festivals are usually in autumn, which is when they meet Sein, and then it gets cold enough for the gang to wear their winter gear again, and they spend a winter (or a cold snap?) with Sein. When they get to Auberst they spend an additional two months training with Fern while waiting for the exam to start. But when they finally leave Auberst in ch61, and aren’t wearing their winter clothes anymore, it’s still listed as 29 years post-Himmel death??? There’s a mention of it being because they’re in the volcanic belt… But seriously, year 79 goes on and on. I honestly think the authors just forgot to find a good spot to switch that over lol
