Happy Mother's Day! 💖💖
And Happy Day to the literary moms! 💖 That's why I'm sharing a scene from my last original story "Dark Circus: the most precious treasure" which is very important to me! 💖💖 Here there is:
– Nicholas!! –
Marcus screamed, as we ran to the fence. The dazzling light of a flash allowed us to see each other, for a couple of moments. Nicholas looked up terrified at us, then widened his eyes and began to shout in turn, his voice broken by tears.
– Dad!! MOM!! –
I inhaled and suddenly it was as if the whole world around me had stopped turning. Mom.
I blinked, as Marcus pushed the swinging gate, probably already disented by bad weather, to pass to the other side. Mom.
The lapping of the waves in flood against the cliff. Our steps in the race. Nicholas shouted, a few meters from us and we saw the brilliance of the diamond rolling away from the swing. Mom.
– Nicholas!! – I screamed again, torn apart, suddenly blocking myself. Silence.
My heart went crazy, galloping with loose briars. I closed my eyes.
– Mom!! –
His voice, desperate. I reopened my eyes and before I even realized it, my body moved on its own. For some absurd reason, I remembered Elizabeth telling me how she had tried to prevent Alexander from jumping off the terrace and how she couldn't, seeing him go down until he ended up in the water and I started running past Marcus who could not stop me in any way, this time. Without heels I was faster... and I was light. I ran feeling the perception of the earth becoming more and more muddy under my bare feet. The rotating light coming from the lighthouse illuminated the dark expanse in front of me. The ocean was in full storm. I caught my breath and jumped. Un, deux, trois. Demi Plie et Grand Jetè.
I had never gone on with dancing, although as a child my mother had insisted that I take classes. Since it wasn't something that could get my father's attention, I had soon lost interest. And yet, those noble and grandiose steps had something extraordinary, in their quest for perfect execution. But there was nothing extraordinary about that jump. Only the mechanic remembered positions tried and tried again until they were exhausted on the parquet of a room full of mirrors, but remained to haw in the memory of the body. That body that would also have been willing to destroy itself in order to save a child who, although not born from it, leained to it, screaming that name in tears. Mom! I grabbed Nicholas by squeezing him to me and managed to turn around with strength on the trunk. The pain of the tear that followed was excruciating, the strongest I had ever felt in my life. A few seconds separated us from ending up in the water, always assuming that the waves had not overwhelmed us before. But I would have sold the leather at a high price. I had learned to fight, to resist. And for my son I was willing to do anything. I looked at him. The thick black-haired head pressing on my chest, clinging like a little koala trembling over me. At that moment I didn't think we were going to die. I felt like crying at the memory of the first memory of him. After a long night and the interrogation of joint agencies given to Harriet Cruise and Varban Petrov, in Norfolk, we had reached Lex and the others present at the hotel. The presence of a child who could be considered a potential biological weapon had been what we had not yet been able to reach a point of agreement on. All we knew was what Alexander and Alejandra Ortega had reported, namely that Nicholas had always been kept under the key by the Reyes, owners of Cruise&Sons Pharma, and that his plasma had been the subject of study for alleged biological immunity to chemical agents of various kinds. When Kate joined us with Jace, holding hands of what Morris considered a danger to public safety, all I had seen was a six-year-old boy who was thin, underweight, wearing a jacket bigger than him, thick and disheveled black hair, the low and frightened look of those who were afraid of being mistreated again. I had approached it, with an impetus that I had never felt before and Nicholas had looked at me for the first time, revealing his blue eyes, the same cut as those of his late mother, for a moment, before he went back to hiding behind Kate. And, in those eyes that revealed all her pain, I realized for the first time in my life, I who had given up the idea of becoming a mother, that for that child I would be ready to give even my own life. I had sworn to Karina, after Nicholas' adoptability was declared, that I would do anything for him. And, when we could finally hold him in our arms as our son, I had confirmation that this would be the case for Marcus too.

Cori Reads: Magica Riot
I was fortunate to join Bluesky right in time to find out about the release of Kara Buchanan's Magica Riot (@magicariot), a love letter to magical girls of all kinds (especially trans/queer ones <3), different forms of queerness, the magical girl genre as a whole, indie bands, and Portland, Oregon, a city I’m more than a little fond of myself. Minor spoilers to chat about some favorite elements!
There’s both familiarity and freshness here for fans of Magical Girl Things™, which makes for a comforting yet engaging read. The magical girl transformations include gender affirming magic and outfits with an alternative twist. The most frequent baddies have big horror movie monster energy, with lovingly gross descriptions of their own transformations. The conflicts have musical overtones, since the girls aren’t just squadmates but bandmates who wield their powers through their instruments, and there’s an interest in things like the difference between often-lumped together concepts like beat and rhythm. Each of the Magica Riot girls brings a different type of feminine power and queerness (there's even a polyamorous pan/bisexual in there which I really appreciated <3), and they are unified in their celebration of and care for each other.
The wicked magical girls (yes thank goodness we love a wicked magical girl) have, of course, hidden depths and inner conflicts as well as ominous devotion to their mysterious evil mistress. The romance is sweet and gay and notably untortured, with a lovely scene in the Portland rose garden where main character Claire gets to see her own beauty and femininity reflected through the camera of the girl she adores. And instead of the genre’s frequent obsession with keeping secrets, this story likes to get things out of the closet and into the open, which I found especially refreshing in the romance. Several times I braced myself for genre-typical angst at a crossed wire or missed text or date or whatever and then it just DIDN'T HAPPEN because that's not what this story is doing and also these women actually default to talking to each other when in doubt, even and especially when it's awkward, and it was SO NICE.
The prose and pacing is brisk, keeping the scenes and set pieces coming. But some of my favorite moments were when the story took a moment to linger on delightful, specific oddities: a local juice cart and its endearingly in-character owner; a beloved band van with a storied history and a sturdy frame; a [gender-intentionally-left-blank] Dark Souls-obsessed IT gremlin (ilu hikariii <3) I enjoyed the sense of place; this story is set in Portland, and while you don’t need to have been there to enjoy it, there’s little treats if you have (it’s been too long since I’ve been to “Howell’s”) and clearly lots more for the actual PDX locals.
I had a fun time with the girls in Portland, and I look forward to seeing what’s next for them! Preview and links to purchase here: https://magicariot.com/
