Della Street and The Case of A Perry Mason Mystery
I watched the last four Perry Mason movies - the ones without Raymond Burr. The first two were pretty good, the third a bit less so and the fourth was dismal. I did like both Paul Sorvino's Anthony Caruso and Hal Holbrook's Bill McKenzie; each was a definite character but neither was cartoonish.
But the movies fell down for me, mostly because Della was sorely underused. She wasn't even in the end of the third one - she "flew off to Hawaii" to help a friend. She had an itty bitty scene near the start of the fourth movie. She's in the office turning things over to her assistant, Janice (Holland Taylor). In walks Bill McKenzie (Hal Halbrook) and Della tells him she's on her way to The Hague to join Perry who's arguing a case in front of The World Court. Much friendly smooching ensues (she and Perry never had a friendly smooch, just a real kiss at the end of the TCOT Telltale Talk Show Host). McKenzie wishes her well, can't wait to see you again and - get this - HANDS DELLA HER COAT. It really was a case of Here's your coat, there's the door, what's your hurry.
I was irked.
Barbara Hale/Della Street deserved better than that after nearly 40 years in the role. Don't know if her departure was her idea or the producers' idea but it really was a let down - especially since it was the last of 30 movies in the series.

The One Time I Wasn't There - FINALE -
(Part 4!! You guys are amazing!)
Hearing the soft but clear tinkling of a bell, Cora bristled with confusion, and sat up.
The sheets now rested at her hip as she caught sight of the mute nurse who'd made the noise, who was now holding up a whiteboard to her patiently.
"Um... I really appreciate your message, but I can't read it. Can you turn the lights on, if that's possible?" her patient replied with a slight irritated flare of her nostrils, flicking her gaze around the room once more
Callie gestured to the lights with a tilted head, and following Cora's reluctant approval, the dimmer lights were switched on and the writing on the nurse's board was visible without it being too bright.
Frieda said a visitor was here for you. Do you mind if they come in?
Her eyes flashing with surprise, she stilled. It might be him, and then what? Her throat was closing up just at the thought of him, accompanied by the familiar bittersweet pang of longing that showed itself simultaneously.
But she nodded despite her reservations, and the freckled nurse disappeared behind the door where the lights were too bright to look at for long. Soon after, Cora looked up from a loose thread in her gown when she heard the sharp click of the metal door, and she saw him, and he saw her, and his eyes glimmered with what she thought was relief, before he quickly came to her side, holding her face in his hands where he stood.
"I need to tell you something," she blurted out, her hands firmly on his
At Cora's outburst, he took that as a sign to step back from the hospital bed, his face going back into Squeaky Mode, amicable terror no doubt wreaking havoc in his mind again, like it always did.
She couldn't always tell what he was thinking, but often, now more than not, Cora was able to read her friend like a grade-school book.
"A-are you alright?" he managed, trembling visibly until she stroked his face reassuringly, tucking his hair behind his ears gently.
"I missed you," he breathed out shakily, finally.
He offered a timid TJ-style smile, and she cracked, unable to stop herself from reaching up and closing the distance between her and him with a emotion-filled hug, and she whispered in his ear quietly, so quiet she didn't know if he heard it, while her fingers raked through his hair;
"I love you too damn much, Anthony Caruso."

TRIGGERS: dysfunctional family dynamics
basics.
full name. anthony andrew caruso-iannelli  pen name. drew crane ( how he will generally introduce himself ) gender. cis man  pronouns. he/him  age. twenty - four  hometown. upper east side, manhattan, nyc  occupation. former child actor, more recently a graphic novelist and aspiring moviemaker
personality.
zodiac. gemini ( affectionate, curious, adaptable ) enneagram. type 7 ; the enthusiast likes. horror movies, comic books, slushies, dungeons & dragons, candy, clue ( board game & movie ), tarantulas, halloween ( holiday & movie series except for the rob zombie ones ), 80s muscle cars, long furbies, teeth, letterboxd  dislikes. boredom, alcohol, the duolingo owl, nihilism, romcoms, clothes shopping, poetry, rob zombie movies, wearing a suit, coffee, his asthma, budgeting, superhero movies, scrappy doo, pretentious indie film snobs    positive traits. sincere, bubbly, clever negative traits. irresponsible, facetious, impulsive special talents. was a genuinely not - so - bad actor and he’s an excellent painter, both of which he has basically no interest in.
biography.
andrew caruso-iannelli was born and raised in new york city. he's the son of renowned oscar winning film director anthony caruso & upper east side royalty priscilla caruso-iannelli, and the youngest of a whole bunch of brothers. he grew up hollywood famous ( a few small appearances in some of his father’s films and walking the red carpet at countless events alongside his family ) and upper east side rich ( private school, hamptons house, robust trust fund ).
it was an open secret among their social circle that his family’s public image of being ‘ the perfect celebrity family ’ was just an act. behind closed doors there was a lot of tension, a mother who relentlessly attempted to push her sons into the spotlight, and a workaholic father who only ever had time to spare for his youngest son, his favorite. when he wasn't around ( somewhat often ) drew tended to slop through the cracks, and so from a young age he was relatively free to do as he pleased so long as he didn’t attract any negative attention to himself. no one cared if he was out all night long at a horror movie marathon, or if he inexplicably acquired a pet tarantula, or if he spent three straight days drawing alone in his room because he kept up his grades, stayed out of the way, and didn’t land the family name on the front cover of gossip rags.
the youngest, often - forgotten child of the bunch did not make friends with ease while growing up. he actually got picked on a lot throughout his school years, although this never really bothered him much as horror movies and creating art held most of his attention through the majority of his school years.
natural talent supplemented by constant practice ( and very expensive art classes ) and combined with his love of horror led to drew creating comics based on his favorite horror tropes & fully written and illustrated by him beginning when he was a teenager. his first few comics were … kinda terrible, in hindsight, but still good enough to impress the rhode island school of design, also known as RISD where he would enroll in their illustration program. he looked forward to leaving home more and more with each passing day as his familial relationships never improved.
by the time he was about halfway through art school, no one in his immediate family was living together or on speaking terms with one another. much to the horror of his mother's upper east side compatriots, his parents even got divorced. his mom kept the brownstone in manhattan and scrambled to rebuild her reputation while his dad moved across the country to los angeles where he still lives while working on his various movie projects. drew tried to stay with him during his longer breaks from school, but he's a new yorker at heart. he stays in a property owned by his grandfather whenever he's in manhattan.
every single one of drew’s brothers is pretty famous now ( probably actors in big name productions like marvel movies and starring in netflix shows ). he’s the only one that enrolled in college and chose to gradually step away from the spotlight as he grew up. he hasn’t spoken to any of them in years and has no plans to reach out any time soon. he carries a lot of resentment towards all of them due to feeling that they abandoned him, which is something he plans to unpack around,  saaaaaay, never.
drew got a publishing deal for his graphic novel series before he had even graduated art school. he’s aware that his ( real ) last name probably had something to do with how it was pretty much handed to him, but it’s also a fact that one of his art school instructors shared his work with friends in the publishing business which is what sparked initial interest in his creations.
his debut graphic novel titled drive - in was released under his pen name of drew crane in early fall 2023 and was an instant success. the love letter to his beloved slasher flicks is about an undead drive - in movie theater employee embarking on a bloody rampage at his old job. it currently remains at the very top of bestseller lists all over the world.
since he owns the rights to his work, drew was able to almost immediately begin planning a movie adaptation. certain that he wanted to direct and author the screenplay himself, drew shadowed his father for about eight months in order to learn from him, which of course is very nepo baby of drew. he would agree with that himself, but he isn't familiar with the term. some controversy was caused recently when an interview clip of him was pulled out of context and went viral. the journalist asks him flat out how he feels about being a nepo baby and he appears confused but still responds that he doesn't think he is. the interview just went downhill from there and even ended a few minutes early. drew was upset and confused. he still is. the full thing was posted online a few weeks ago, which is when the controversy and ridicule kicked off. he's still a target on the internet and he's worried that the plans for his movie are going to crash and burn any second.
he's in chile for the first time to visit his partner ( luna ) and unplug for a while. he currently doesn't plan to stay, but as we all know that's going to change !
wanted connections.
tbd. :)

Character Actor
Anthony Caruso (April 7, 1916 – April 4, 2003) Film and television character actor in more than one hundred American films, usually playing villains and gangsters, including the first season of Walt Disney's Zorro as Captain Juan Ortega.
In some of his television roles, Caruso played sympathetic characters, like "Ash", on an early episode of CBS's Gunsmoke, and again in 1960 as “Gurney”, a murdering, yet ultimately sympathetic cowboy. He also played “Lone Wolf” in a 1961 episode entitled “Indian Ford”.
In 1954, Caruso played Tiburcio Vásquez in an episode of the western series Stories of the Century. He appeared in the first Brian Keith series, Crusader.  In 1957, he appeared in the fourth episode of the first season of the TV western Have Gun – Will Travel starring Richard Boone titled "The Winchester Quarantine".
In 1957, Caruso appeared in episode "The Child" on NBC's The Restless Gun.  In 1959, he was cast as George Bradley in the episode "Annie's Old Beau" on the NBC children's western series, Buckskin.
That same year, he portrayed Matt Cleary on CBS's Wanted: Dead or Alive episode "The Littlest Client", with Steve McQueen. Also 1959, he also guest-starred on the ABC/Warner Brothers western series, Sugarfoot, in the episode "The Extra Hand", along with guest stars Karl Swenson and Jack Lambert as well as the series star, Will Hutchins. The same year he appeared in the 'Syndicate Sanctuary' episode of The Untouchables.
In 1960, Caruso played a Cherokee Indian, Chief White Bull, in the episode "The Long Trail" of the NBC western series, Riverboat, starring Darren McGavin.
Also in 1960, he returned to Gunsmoke playing a murderous cowboy named “Gurney” in S6E5’s “Shooting Stopover”. Again his character was a hard man, but through the character’s death, Caruso successfully made him sympathetic.
In 1961, he appeared twice on the ABC/Warner Brothers drama series, The Roaring 20s, including the role of Lucky Lombardi in "The Maestro". He was also cast with Will Hutchins in a second The Roaring 20s episode entitled, "Pie in the Sky." Early in 1961, he was cast as Velde in the episode "Willy's Millionaire" of the short-lived ABC adventure series, The Islanders, with Diane Brewster.
Caruso guest-starred in an episode of the ABC western series, The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters, based on a Robert Lewis Taylor novel of the same name. Caruso guest-starred three times on CBS's Perry Mason. In 1962, he played Keith Lombard in "The Case of the Playboy Pugilist." Also in 1962, Caruso played Cody Durham in "Cody's Code" on Gunsmoke. In 1965, he made two Perry Mason appearances, both times as the murder victim: first as title character Enrico Bacio in "The Case of the Sad Sicilian," then as Harvey Rettig in "The Case of the Runaway Racer."
In 1964, he guest-starred in the Bonanza episode "The Saga of Squaw Charlie" playing a Native American man shunned by almost everybody and with only two friends, Ben Cartwright and a little girl named Angela. In 1969 he starred alongside Ricardo Montalban in Desperate Mission, a fictionalized telling of the life of Joaquin Murrieta. From 1966 to 1970 he guest-starred three times on the long-running NBC western The Virginian, starring James Drury. In 1965 he guest-starred on ABC's The Addams Family as Don Xavier Molinas.
Some of his other roles were that of the alien gangster "Bela Oxmyx" in the classic Star Trek episode "A Piece of the Action", Chief Blackfish on the NBC series Daniel Boone, and Louis Ciavelli (the "box man" or safecracker) in The Asphalt Jungle. Caruso played the comical character of the Native American "Red Cloud" on the 1965 Get Smart episode "Washington 4, Indians 3," and Chief Angry Bear in the episode "You Can't Scalp a Bald Indian" of Rango.
In 1970, Caruso made a guest appearance on the ABC crime drama The Silent Force in the episode "A Family Tradition." In 1974, he appeared in the final episode, entitled "The Fire Dancer," of the ABC police drama Nakia. Anthony Caruso also had a memorable, recurring roll as “El Lobo” on The High Chaparral.  (Wikipedia)

˗ˏˋ nolan carusso-iannelli ⟶ introduction
nolan carusso-iannelli picked up their key from the front desk eight years ago. the thirty-two year old uses he/him pronouns and is a film director from new york city, america. according to their apartment application, people have told them they look a lot like logan lerman, and the character they identify with most is elsa from frozen ( jokes on you sam i did it ). santa moneda gives you a warm welcome, and we hope you enjoy your stay. ( s/star, 25, she/her, est, )
B A S I C S
˗ˏˋ full name ⟶ nolan benjamin carusso-iannelli ˗ˏˋ age ⟶ thirty-two ˗ˏˋ pronouns ⟶ he/him ˗ˏˋ place of birth ⟶ new york city, america ˗ˏˋ star sign ⟶ leo
I N T E R V I E W ( bio & backstory )
I:  can  you  state  your  full  name,  age,  and  how  long  you’ve  been  living  at  santa  moenda,  for  the  record  ?
N:  while  the  camera  is  non-operational  and  the  room  empty,  nolan  sits  slouched  against  the  back  of  the  chair,  tapping  a  cigarette  against  his  leg  impatiently.  but  the  moment  the  lens  is  opened  and  the  interviewer  sits  down  across  from  him,  a  metamorphosis  occurs  and  he  sits  up,  his  smile  and  mannerism  indicative  of  someone  who’s  been  doing  this  for  years.  “  nolan  carusso-iannelli.  i’m  thirty  two,  and  i’ve  lived  at  santa  moenda  for  eight  years  now.  “
I:  let’s  start  at  the  beginning  :  where  were  you  born  ?  what  is  your  family  like  ?
N:  personal  interviews  are  the  worst  kind  of  interviews.  he  hates  them.  all  these  questions  that  he  doesn’t  want  to  answer,  about  his  life  and  his  family,  when  all  he  wants  to  do  is  talk  about  his  work.  his  lips  purse  into  a  tight,  forced  smile.  “  my  parents  are  anthony  and  scilla  caruso-iannelli    ──  you  might  recognize  their  names.  a  lot  of  people  do.    “  there’s  a  formality  in  the  way  he  says  it,  as  though  these  are  people  he’s  never  met  and  not  his  own  parents,  “  i  had  brothers,  too.  we  all  grew  up  in  a  fancy  home  in  the  upper-east  side  with  hedges  and  a  perfectly  trimmed  lawn,  done  by  professionals.  “  is  that  bitterness,  nolan  ?  would  say  the  headlines  if  this  were  a  public  interview  and  not  just  an  internal  questionnaire.  he’s  masking  it  well,  he  thinks,  under  layers  of  false  enthusiasm,  but  there  are  no  personal  anecdotes  about  his  childhood  he  feels  vulnerable  enough  to  share.  “  i  think  if  i  were  to  try  to  explain  each  and  every  one  of  them  to  you,  you  end  up  going  way  over  your  interview  time.  i  have  nothing  but  nice  things  to  say.  next  question  ?  “
I:  what  was  your  childhood  like  ?
N:  oh.  it’s  worse  than  the  first  one.  nolan  searches  for  a  quick  but  well-crafted  answer  that  will  continue  to  play  up  the  facade  that  his  mother  has  carefully  curated  for  their  family  ──  how  they’re  nothing  but  the  standard  of  american  celebrity  perfection  ──  without  him  having  to  lie  through  his  teeth.  even  though  they’re  no  longer  on  speaking  terms  (  and  haven’t  been  for  months  ),  he’s  still  terrified  of  what  the  fallout  would  be  for  all  of  them  if  it  was  revealed  scilla’s  golden  boy  was  no  longer  calling  for  family  dinners.  rumours  have  a  habit  of  circulating  through  the  press.  “  i  was  really  blessed  to  be  given  a  lot  of  really  incredible  opportunities.  my  parents  being  who  they  are  afforded  me  a  lot  of  privileges,  ones  i  used  to  help  me  get  where  i  am.  ”  he  speaks  slowly.  each  word  practically  burns  on  his  tongue.  “  and  i’m  grateful  for  that.  i  can’t  complain.  “
I:  what  kind  of  kid  were  you  ?
N:  “  a  busy  one.  auditions,  events,  red  carpets,  you  know  the  drill.  “  nolan  doesn’t  want  to  explain  to  this  stranger  that  he’s  never  felt  like  he  was  a  kid.  from  the  moment  he  was  born,  his  mother  was  carefully  crafting  the  person  that  nolan  was  going  to  be  and  putting  that  person  out  on  display  in  front  of  the  cameras.  he  was  shuffled  from  place  to  place,  closer  to  her  sparkling  chanel  handbag  than  an  actual  child.  he’s  been  behaving  like  a  grown  up  since  he  learned  to  talk.  he’s  pretty  sure  he  raised  his  brothers,  keeping  an  eye  on  drew,  matty,  the  others,  trying  to  convince  them  that  they  need  to  clean  their  shoes  and  sit  up  straight  so  that  way  they  don’t  have  to  deal  with  mom’s  wrath…  ──  until  he  left  anyway.  nolan  tries  not  to  think  about  that.  in  fact,  he  tries  not  to  think  about  his  childhood  at  all,  blocking  it  out  like  a  bad  dream,  but  all  these  questions  are  forcing  a  lot  of  it  back  up  to  the  surface.  he  taps  his  fingers  rhythmically  against  the  arm  of  the  chair.  “  i  didn’t  have  the  most  typical  childhood  ;  i  don’t  know  if  i  even  knew  what  a  grass  stain  was  until  i  was  about  twenty.  “  everything  was  so  clinically  white  and  perfect.  how  much  he  hates  remembering.  still,  he  laughs  lightly.  “  but  there  were  good  moments.  there’s  always  good  moments.  “
I:  the  career  that  you  picked:  what  made  you  decide  to  go  in  that  direction  ?  how  do  you  like  it  ?
N:  nolan  finally  perks  up.  ah,  yes,  this  is  what  he’s  been  waiting  for.  he  loves  talking  about  film.  even  if  it  was  forced  on  him  at  a  young  age  as  an  attempt  to  try  and  bond  with  his  mostly-absent  father,  sitting  behind  a  camera  (  or  an  editing  screen  or  his  script-writing  software  )  is  the  one  place  nolan  feels  like  he’s  home.  “  well,  obviously,  my  dad  has  won  a  few  oscars.  “  it  sounds  like  a  brag,  but  that  isn’t  his  intention.  his  enthusiasm  is  now  genuine,  his  eyes  lighting  up  with  excitement.  “  so  i  was  introduced  to  the  industry  before  i  was  even  born.  some  kids,  i  guess,  want  to  get  as  far  away  from  what  their  parents  do  as  possible,  but  i  was  the  opposite.  i  was  that  kid  that  would  watch  every  single  bonus  feature  on  a  dvd  when  i  bought  it  and  then  also  went  online  and  read  the  whole  script  as  the  director  wrote  it.  i  was  really  drawn  to  how  movies  are  made,  and  what  the  people  making  them  were  trying  to  say  with  them.  couple  that  with  the  fact  that  i  was  always  a  storyteller,  and  you  have  a  perfect  recipe  for  someone  who  makes  good  movies.  i  didn’t  really  care,  y’know,  if  people  watched  them  or  if  they  were  popular…  ──  “  it’s  a  lie,  kind  of.  he  cared  because  his  mother  cared,  and  because  she  needed  him  to  be  successful,  he  needed  to  be  successful.  he’s  been  enjoying  his  craft  a  lot  more  since  he  shook  her  off.  “  i  just  wanted  to  make  something  that  maybe  others  would  see  and  identify  with.  “
I:  what  was  the  most  defining  moment  in  your  life  ?  how  has  it  impacted  you  personally  ?
N:  nolan  finds  it  difficult  to  hide  his  reaction  to  this  question,  sucking  his  teeth.  if  they  don’t  know  about  his  rocky  relationship  with  his  family,  then  they  don’t  know  about  the  moment  he  decided  to  leave  home.  he  can’t  tell  them  that  the  pressure  built  up  so  much  on  his  shoulders  he  was  certain  that  if  he  added  any  more,  his  whole  body  would  cave  in  underneath  him.  how  his  first  movie  was  a  success  and  yet  it  still  wasn’t  good  enough  ──  he  still  couldn’t  live  up  to  the  impossible  expectations  that  had  been  set  for  him.  he  was  pushing  him  to  the  brink  of  insanity  with  how  hard  he  was  trying,  and  so  one  day  he  just  stopped  ;  no  longer  willing  to  bend  himself  in  half  because  he  knew  he  was  going  to  break,  and  that  would  have  been  ugly  for  all  of  them.  he  wants  to  look  in  the  camera  and  tell  them  about  the  day  that  he  looked  scilla  caruso-iannelli  in  the  face  and  told  her  this  time  she  wasn’t  going  to  get  her  way,  and  if  she  wanted  to  continue  to  flaunt  her  sons’  collective  success  in  the  face  of  all  her  friends  then  she  would  let  him  go  and  leave  him  alone.  he  wants  to  acknowledge  the  guilt  that  has  built  up  over  time  when  he  thinks  about  his  younger  brothers,  who  were  definitely  too  young  at  the  time  to  understand  why  he  was  going  (  or  maybe  they  weren’t  ?  he  always  thought  they  were  smarter  than  their  parents  gave  them  credit  for.  )  instead,  he  smiles  earnestly,  “  you  never  forget  what  it’s  like  on  the  set  of  your  first  movie.  “  he  says  sweetly,  “  you  make  a  second  family  there,  and  it  sticks  with  you  forever,  both  as  an  artist  and  as  a  person.  “
I:  why  did  you  come  to  santa  moenda  ?  how  do  you  like  it  ?
N:  he  doesn’t  know  how  to  expain  that  santa  moenda  was  an  escape  without  explaining  that  he  wanted  to  go  somewhere  so  different  to  his  childhood  in  manhattan  that  he  wouldn’t  have  to  think  about  the  screaming  matches  that  took  place  there.  it’s  a  small,  one-bedroom  apartment  overlooking  the  sea  instead  of  an  empty  house  with  more  rooms  than  the  people  inside  of  it  could  ever  use  ;  it’s  a  tight-knit  community  of  neighbours  instead  of  a  lonely  home  on  the  hill  where  he’s  only  allowed  to  interact  with  the  friends  his  parents  deemed  acceptable  for  their  image.  when  he’s  locked  up  for  hours,  barely  sleeping  while  he  stares  bleary-eyed  at  his  dim  computer  screen,  it’s  the  sound  of  the  waves  and  the  chimes  that  he  wants  to  hear  instead  of  his  mother’s  shrill,  demanding  voice.  nolan  has  been  a  lot  of  places  and  he’s  certain  he  wouldn’t  leave  valpo  for  anywhere  else  ──  but  he  doesn’t  know  his  brothers  are  here  yet.  “  it’s  a  great  source  of  inspiration.  “  he  settles,  nodding  along  with  his  words,  thoughtfully.  “  anywhere  you  go  in  this  city  you  can  find  some  kind  of  story  waiting  to  be  told.  now,  if  you’ll  excuse  me,  “  he  abruptly  stands,  brushing  off  his  pants  and  gathering  up  his  things.  “  i  have  somewhere  to  be.  “

drew & matty's older brother!!!!!!! the eldest child of their family he was the golden boy until he very decidedly wasn't and now things are weird for him. oops.
film nerd through and through. he is pretentious as hell because he was raised to be pretentious as hell. his movies are closer definitely those kind of oscar-bait independent-style films like aftersun, and i think he had 1 directoral debut and then one other movie that he's put out. he's working on a script for a third right now, but has some serious writer's block and hasn't been able to figure out why.
a nightowl and not really a people person. even though he knows how to be a people person, he gets really easily exhausted being around people because of the fact that he feels like he always needs to be turned on and charming them... he can't let his guard down because he's been trained to believe there will be consequences for that. instead he just tries to avoid people if he can help it.
P E R F E C T I O N I S T.
cat !! person !! has at least 2 cats that keep him company cause god knows his apartment would be empty if not for them and at least theirs something to force him to get up from his desk when he's been sat there cramped for 10 hours straight.
i'm sure i'll have more eventually but this is what i'm putting out here for now !! i know this one is a bit weirder and different to rohan and elijah but i realized if i wanted to keep the format the same i would have to do a lot more introspection because of the fact that nolan is the most likely to lie about his past... if you wanna check out his pinterest it's HERE and if you wanna plot with me you know where to find me xoxo gossip girl.
