Plot (it may contain spoilers)

Metello struggles to escape from the poverty that led to the premature death of his parents, and that is the lot of the working class in northern Italy during the second half of the 19th century. Metello fights his way out from his condition through hard work, a determined will to resist oppression inherited from his father, but also by taking advantage of his good looks when dealing with women. Metello progressively assumes an important role in the organization of an emerging workers movement, and attempts to conciliate his risky political activities with his private life.

Fatalismo de Guerra

Vittorio de Sica consegue um feito notável, nesta vistosa produção de 1970, juntar norte-americanos e soviéticos, em plena guerra fria, na co-produção de um filme franco-italiano.

Aos norte-americanos foi buscar uma memorável banda sonora, escrita e dirigida por Henry Mancini e nomeada para um Óscar. Dos soviéticos recebeu as filmagens da Mosfilm, realizadas por Andrey Konchalovskiy, além da atriz Ludmila Saveleva.

O argumento de Tonino Guerra e Cesare Zavattini até tem tudo para funcionar mas, no entanto, o filme perde-se, algures entre tantos predicados.

A história é básica e excessivamente melodramática. A banda sonora é bonita mas rapidamente se torna enjoativa. As filmagens dos campos de girassóis e dos cemitérios dos combatentes da Rússia são poderosas e eloquentes, mas inconsequentes. Esta é, afinal, uma história de vivos e não de mortos.

Restam apenas as notas finais do fatalismo da guerra, que determina o destino das pessoas, muito além da sua vontade individual, a dar algum sentido ao filme.

Mas sabe a pouco. Um resultado final claramente aquém da soma das partes.

From the Americans he got a memorable soundtrack, written and directed by Henry Mancini and nominated for an Oscar. From the Soviets he received the footage from Mosfilm, directed by Andrey Konchalovskiy, as well as the actress Ludmila Saveleva.

The script by Tonino Guerra and Cesare Zavattini has everything it needs to work, but the film gets lost somewhere in between so many attributes.

The story is basic and excessively melodramatic. The soundtrack is beautiful but quickly becomes cloying. The footage of the sunflower fields and the cemeteries of Russian combatants is powerful and eloquent, but inconsequential. This is, after all, a story of the living, not the dead. Only the final notes of the fatalism of war, which determines people's fates, far beyond their individual will, remain to give the film any meaning.

But it is not enough. A final result clearly less than the sum of its parts.
