What made you choose Qualley over Moore for best actress? Is there something specific about the performance that you preferred over the other?
I remember leaving the theater and thinking "wow someone finally figured out what to do with Margaret Qualley." Like the extremely earnest register in which she typically operates has had some divisive and even disastrous results (Stars at Noon), but letting her run rampant as a caricature of the divine feminine was some inspired casting. There's an obvious unrealness and extremity of expression to her non-character that she completely nails. The reason the movie succeeds for me is Qualley's ability to weaponize her very arch acting style and cycle rapidly through the Sexy Baby persona she channels in her Dennis Quaid scenes and the Bemused Semi-Autoeroticism of watching herself in the mirror or interacting with her neighbor, to the Desperate Drug Addict incapable of coming to grips with her non-existence, to the supercharged rage at her old self for actually existing. None of it feels like an undisciplined performance either. I was really fascinated by that "control yourself" clip that made the rounds because there's a clear choice that she's making to return to the Sexy Baby whine at the end of each shouted syllable because Sue can't stop performing desirability even when she's alone. Qualley's upper register swings work completely in tandem with those of the movie and I think maybe the success of the movie hinges on whether you're able to stomach what she's going for.

Best Original Screenplay 2024
Winner
Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World, by Radu Jude
There’s this scene with two friends sentenced to death by hanging, and one is pardoned at the last moment.  The other one complains, not that he is to be executed, but that his friend is not. In a way, I understand.  It’s easier when you’re not alone.  There’s a Slovenian joke–God tells a peasant “Make a wish. It will be granted, and your neighbor will also get it, doubled.” The peasant thinks…”He gets it too, but doubled? Take out one of my eyes!”
Nominees
The Brutalist, by Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold
Don’t be mad but your Uncle László insisted I enclose a few banknotes for you and Binyamin.  We hope he won’t be offended, and that it’s not too difficult to change these into the local currency.  Here I am so alone.  Perhaps more alone than I have ever been.  Your uncle has closed a door to me.  The man I married is inside but the lock’s combination I cannot decipher.  He no longer attends synagogue.  When I ask him why, he will not reply.  Perhaps his own narcissism will no longer allow him a relationship with our community.  Tell me how you are.  How you really are.  All our love and warmth to the three of you.  Erzsébet.
Close Your Eyes, by Victor Erice and Michel Gaztambide
If one of his films comes on TV I don’t watch it anymore.  I watched them as a little girl, not all of them.  Movies are so strange in that sense.  You see a character and you're told he's your father.  You see him from head to toe, with his voice.  It was his voice I recognized most.   Not his face but his voice.  The one I heard when he called on the phone.  His face was almost that of a stranger, always dressed as someone else, always in character.  He would appear…and disappear.  He’d take me out for walks or out to lunch, and then he’d leave again.  He never came to pick me up from school.  I never took a trip with him.  I’ve discovered I have nothing of his.  How is it possible he left me nothing?
A Different Man, by Aaron Schimberg
Nobody is gonna believe that Edward looks like him, and then suddenly he looks like me.   It’s magic! But she loves him for who he is.  If he changes, who is he then? The same person.  Same chap, new face. That’s a different person! It’s a metaphorical change.  Right out of Beauty and the Beast.  She loves him, so voila, he appears beautiful to her. But he had pretended to be a beast to prove her love.  He didn’t want to be loved for his looks. No, she loves him because he’s a beast. Or in spite of his beastliness. They’re talking about you like you’re a beast! They’re talking about Edward. Edward is not a beast!
The Seed of the Sacred Fig, by Mohammad Rasoulof
Do you think you became an investigating judge overnight?  The boss doesn’t like you.  He was against your transfer here right from the beginning.  He wanted to bring his person.  I insisted.  And now he’s waiting for the tiniest mistake on your part.  Are you trying to undermine me?  Or do you want to turn your back on your own progress and success, your wife and children?  Do you know how many people were trying to be an investigating judge in this office?  How many years you’ve been waiting to be a judge?  Iman, here you have to fight.  You have to prove yourself, especially in this case which is a direct order from the prosecutor. But I haven’t even read the case, how can I issue a punishment for “Waging war against God” and request a death penalty? Prosecutor’s order is the law, do you understand?
The Substance, by Coralie Fargeat
