Romantic Subplots That Don’t Make Me Want to Eat My Laptop

✧ The enemies-to-lovers pipeline is not just “we yelled once” and now we’re making out. Where is the tension? Where is the mutual respect beneath the knives? Where is the unbearable yearning while they patch each other up post-battle, covered in blood and unresolved feelings?

✧ You do not have to pair everyone off like it’s a high school dance and the chaperones are judging. It’s okay for characters to stay single, or in situationships, or be in love with someone who doesn’t love them back (ouch, but delicious).

✧ If they fall in love because they’re “both hot and there,” I am going to demand emotional receipts. What do they see in each other that nobody else does? Give me the specificity. “He brings her tea when her hands shake.” “She doesn’t mock his cursed poetry.” That kind of slop.

✧ Consent is hot. I don’t care if they’re vampires, enemies, rivals, or literal gods at war. “Do you want me to kiss you?” with the voice drop is sexier than 87 pages of unspoken tension ending in a sudden smooch that makes no sense.

✧ A love triangle is not “who is hotter.” It’s “which future does this character want.” One boy represents safety, the other chaos? Great. But we’re picking identities, not abs.

✧ Please stop writing characters who fall in love after knowing each other for twelve seconds and one trauma. That’s not love. That’s a bonding exercise at Emotional Camp and it will implode. At least let them flirt awkwardly first.

and people always forget that ‘actual soulmates’ is immediately followed up by ‘…not that souls are a real thing that exists’ like obviously that’s just dan trying to defuse the tension and it doesn’t detract from the message but……. the WHOLE phil section from big starts from ‘and obviously we were more than friends’. and it just blows me away every time. dan kneww the public’s eyes would be on him and he used that moment to say yeah by the way this phil guy was a cornerstone in my queer journey and i want everyone to hear our story

its extremely important to read widely and deeply in a variety of genres. read obscure self published shit that only 4 people have read. read culturally relevant works of literature that have helped shape the canon. read horror. read women's lit. read historical fiction and comedies and nonfiction and hentai and poetry and science fiction and fantasy and mysteries and romance and good things and bad things and things u hate and things you love and things you COULD like if only the author changed x y and z and things which are beautiful but not meant for you.

doing all of this reading will lay a groundwork of rich complexity in your heart. so that you can write really good porn

I'm so sad in such a strange way to hear about the Corporation for Public Broadcasting officially shutting down. It's a weird feeling. Most of it is the intellectual level of "oh this is SO fucking bad and terrifying that we'll no longer have federally supported public information channels anymore, it will ALL be through the private market, not to mention the stark reminder of the US government's continued descent into anti-intellectualism and fascism," all of which makes my stomach sink.

But on a smaller level it is the disappearance of something that was so ubiquitous to American childhood. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of Americans can hear the exact intonation of this phrase in their head: "This program made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and by viewers like you. Thank you."

There is a lot more that could be said about the likely repercussions of this. In addition to being sad, I am also exceedingly furious. I wish despair upon all the Republicans who helped kill the CBP just because it took its mission seriously and refused to broadcast overt right-wing propaganda as news.
