In Ammerzoden kwamen we deze ruïnekerk tegen. Volgens de legende is het grootste gedeelte van de kerk vervallen tot ruïne in het rampjaar 1672. Franse troepen belegerden de stad toen en zouden het nabijgelegen kasteel hebben moeten beschieten. Omdat de geliefde van de Franse commandant in het kasteel zou zijn, zou de commandant ‘per ongeluk’ de kerk beschoten hebben. Dit verhaal is echter niet waar, het is verzonnen in 1868 toen een Britse historicus de stad bezocht. In werkelijkheid is de, begin 16e eeuw gebouwde, kerk al vroeg in de 17e eeuw grotendeels vervallen na de reformatie en de overname van de Rooms-Katholieke kerk door protestanten. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog lag Ammerzoden gedurende de winter van ‘44/‘45 in de frontlinie. De kerk raakte nog verder beschadigd door beschietingen. Na de oorlog is de ruinekerk teruggebracht in de staat van voor de oorlog. —————— At Ammerzoden we found this church ruin. Legend tells about a story in which the church was ruined during French shelling in 1672. The French commander was ordered to shell the nearby castle, but consciously shot the church. His lover supposedly would have been in the castle. This legend isn’t the real story, but was made up by a British historian who visited the village in 1868. The real story is that the church was ransacked during the reformation around 1600, when the then 100 year old Catholic Church was pillaged and Protestants took over the church. Nowadays a part of the church is still used by a reformed congregation. During the last winter of World War 2 the village was positioned in the frontline. German and allied shooting damaged the church even further. The small village of Hundisburg in Saxony Anhalt is an old medieval yet interesting place for droning. You have a few places of interest, namely the abandoned parish church ruins of Nordhusen (1) from 1215 AD, the stone quarry (3) which is now filled with water and used for swimming in summer and of course the amazing baroque palace of Hundisburg (2) with its landscaped gardens of splendor which, built in the 12th century and renovated in 1994. All nestled nicely in the vicinity of the village of Hundisburg which has currently less than 900 residents. The baroque palace and ruins are part of the 'Straße der Romanik' one of the popular scenic tourist routes of Germany.
