German security chiefs face questions over Christmas market attack

Germany’s security and intelligence chiefs are due in court on Monday over the explosives attack that killed five people and injured more than 200 at a Christmas market 10 days ago.

They will be questioned about possible missed evidence and security lapses before the December 20 attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg, where police arrested 50-year-old psychiatrist Taleb al-Abdulmohsen at the scene.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, officials from the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the heads of Germany’s domestic and foreign intelligence services are expected to hold a closed-door committee meeting in parliament from 12:00 GMT.

Abdulmohsen is the only suspect in the attack, in which a rented BMW sports car ploughed at high speed through a crowd of walkers, leaving a bloody trail behind it. Investigators have yet to announce a motive for the attack.

Earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the scene of a car attack on a crowded Christmas market that killed five people and injured more than 200. He called for unity, condemning the “terrible catastrophe.”

He promised Germany would respond to the attack “to the full extent of the law” but also called for unity as Germany faces a heated debate over immigration and security and moves towards elections in February.

The centre-left chancellor said it was important “that we stick together, that we stick to our guns, that it is not hatred that defines our coexistence, but that we are a community that strives for a common future.”

He said he was grateful for the expressions of “solidarity … from many, many countries around the world,” and added that “it is good to hear that we Germans are not alone in the face of this terrible catastrophe.”

Daniel’s hoisting another case onto his side table to begin unpacking bottles when he makes eye contact across the way with the prettiest, brightest, loveliest blue eyes he’s maybe ever seen.

The guy is at the hand-crafted soaps stall kitty-korner from Daniel’s own, sniffing a bar as their eyes meet. He glances away but Daniel doesn’t.

He’s beautiful, and blonde, and not looking cold at all, dressed in jeans and a jacket, a couple of small bags in one hand.

Daniel’s been shivering most of the evening, wearing layers of long-johns and sweatpants, a hoodie, his jacket, mittens, a beanie… He’s got those reusable handwarmers you crack to release the heat stuffed in his jogger pockets.

His hands – gloved but with the mitten portion velcro’d back so his fingers are free – are stalled on a bottle of wine he’s meant to be unpacking and adding to the display, replenishing what’s been sold already. But he’s frozen – because of the cold and the beat his heart skipped – and staring.

The guy puts down the soap bar and opts for another to sniff, and his gaze glances back to Daniel for a brief second before looking away again. There’s a blush blooming on his pretty cheeks – high and pink on his cheekbones – and Daniel hopes he looks again.

Daniel swallows the lump in his throat – nerves because this is the prettiest boy he’s seen in a long time – and gets to work unboxing his wine bottles with their special labels, putting them into the wine racks at the front of his market stall.

 When he looks up again from re-setting the case back underneath the table and out of sight, Blue Eyes is right in front of him.

“Hi,” Daniel says, unable to help the smile breaking on his face. He’s even more gorgeous up close. Sharp cheekbones, square jaw, pink lips and pink cheeks. “Would you like to try a sample?”

Across from him the guy smirks.

“Aren’t you supposed to offer to buy a guy a drink after you’ve been eyeing him up?” He asks and it’s Daniel’s turn to blush.

“I-“ he stammers, laughing a little. Caught out.

“It is of course okay anyhow because I was looking also,” the guy says with a little shrug and a grin.

“I’m Daniel,” Daniel says, laughing a bit. “I make wine,” he says, vaguely waving his hand around at his holiday stall.

“Max,” the guy says. “I buy wine from the cute wine guy at the Christmas market.”

The guy – Max – has impossibly too much rizz and confidence and Daniel might explode here on the spot. At least he’d be warm, then.

Max leaves with a bottle of Daniel’s special Christmas red and Daniel’s number written on his receipt.

A few hours later he gets a text.

A photo of a glass of red wine on a coffee table, Christmas tree illuminating the background. ‘what are you doing New Years?’ It reads.

Daniel grins, leaning against the trailer hooked up to his truck, once he’s all packed up and broken his stall down. He’s clearing his calendar, that’s for sure. He climbs into the truck, types out his message, and hits send.

‘kissing you at midnight I hope.’
