I love thomas but why do some of the characters act like what he did to jimmy wasn’t assault? When bates said “why are you being such a big girl’s blouse about it” why do you think 😭 thomas had been making him uncomfortable for weeks and then he woke up in the middle of the night to him kissing him like ofc you’d freak out and be angry. It’s a normal reaction even without the added layer of attitudes towards gay people in those days. They can never make me hate thomas barrow he’s my favourite but that was all handled so weirdly by the other characters

Similar to mary and kemal. She denied that he forced himself on her when we clearly see him do that in the episode

The writing on this show is always questionable

thinking deeply about thomas just wanting to love and jimmy just wanting to be loved.

like thomas above everything else just wants to be able to offer himself fully and leave nothing spare. he wants to dedicate his entire soul, his entire heart to the person he loves even in the harshness of a world that wants him to live that love in secret.

and jimmy wants to feel true, actual love that’s not just based on the facade he’s created. he wants someone to see through the bravado and the tendency to be perceived as a good-time-guy and to fall for the pieces of person he’s trying to be.

and so together they can fill the holes in each others hearts. it’s about the look on thomas’ face when he calls jimmy his darling boy and jimmy grins. it’s about jimmy shaking with nerves and anticipation and desire the first time they’re intimate as he realises that this can be about love too. it’s about thomas brushing jimmys hair out of his eyes so tenderly as he falls asleep and knowing that he’s made someone feel safe and love in his arms. it’s about jimmy putting on a show, performing for the servants hall with ragtime tunes and cheeky winks thrown at housemaids, but feeling settled and safe in the knowledge that when it’s just him and thomas he can be shy and awkward and that’s a part of him that’s worth loving too.

just the two of them truly being that pair, heads always together, hands sneakily entwined under the table, companionable silence, warm cuddles on cold winter nights, fingers carding through hair, cheek kisses, shared cups of tea, safety and comfort and love, love, love.

Saw a reel of tug of war in the 1908 London Olympic Games, went 👀 and immediately thought of Downton.

Did a bit of research:

Considering how well Team GB did in this sport, it could be quite respected among the Brits around that time. Then, was there more serious contempt for Thomas in Jimmy’s questioning about whether he could manage this rather formal and popular sport? Like, there’s difference in asking someone who attempted breakdancing if they found it rough in the 1970s vs today. This certainly adds another layer to Jimmy’s passive-aggressive behaviour.

Meanwhile, I can only imagine a “Downton Club” standing on the podium. What a pity they cancelled it after 1920. We should really bring it back.
