In which Christmas is a hard time for Steve and Eddie notices that Steve's a bit subdued but doesn't yet understand why.

For Steve, it's that time of the year again.

Ice slicks the roads, Deck the Halls and Winter Wonderland play in endless loops at Melvald's, the scent of pine saturates the air, and coloured lights glow darkly against Christmas trees and yard displays.

Steve has a system that he's refined since '83. When driving, eyes forward and any blinking lights are forced to become a blur in his periphery.

When heading past Karen Wheeler's carefully decorated banners and tree, head tilted to the side and down; he doesn't need to look to know the steps towards the basement.

When at home, the curtains determinedly drawn to block out any rainbow-like glow from his neighbours' competitive displays.

It's not a sophisticated system, but it's the best that Steve's got.

Robin contributes her part like the chaotic gremlin of his heart that she is. Having 'accidently' lost part of the yearly decorations at the Buckley residence and Family Video.

Still, the nightmares predictably increase. Strobing effects behind closed eyes. An expanding pinprick that shows only the one terrible film. A ceiling spitting out the maw of daggered teeth.Yellow. His bat in another boy's hands while his own grasp at empty air. Green. Steve's helpless. Useless. Blue. His friends torn to wet, bloody pieces scrawled against the walls. Splattered over flickering Christmas lights. Red.

Eddie's not sure what's going on with Steve. He's walking, talking and acting like the bitchy goofball that he knows, but it's all a little faded. A little dimmed.

It could be that the former King is still hung up on his ex. Bummed to see her with her still very current boyfriend whose visiting for the holidays. Eddie's theory feels depressingly confirmed when he nearly walks in on the former lovebirds in Steve's kitchen on movie night. Nancy and Steve's heads bowed close to each other, her hand clasped around his bicep, voices at a low murmur.

No beer is worth prodding the familiar bruise at the thought of Ser Steve finally reuniting with his fair maiden, so Eddie abruptly 180's out of the kitchen back to the living room before the two maybe-soon-to-be-reunited-lovers see him.

Back to the paused film, to Robin and Vicki cuddled together in the love seat, Jonathon next to a cooling cushion with Argyle wrapped securely in blankets on the floor by his feet. A self-proclaimed Californian burrito for the dude missing his sunny home.

Back to the sadly blank Harrington walls with nary a cheerful decoration to be seen. If it weren't for Vicki's santa hat themed socks Eddie may have guessed that Christmas had come and gone for the winter of '87.

He can't do much for Steve in the love department. As much as he very much would like to, though maybe not in the direction his straight friend would expect. But maybe Eddie can help lighten his load a little. Relax with a bit of Christmas cheer.

He and Wayne can never resist adding to their holiday collection every year so they always have plenty left over. Maybe Eddie will stop by tomorrow with a box of Christmas decorations to help brighten Steve up.

chaotic career coaching

i'd signed up to career coaching offered by my uni to help me figure out what i want to do with my life. i was given the task to work through the first section of their application guide which is about analysing your interests, strength, and needs. and of course i left starting on it until the afternoon before when it had already become impossible to actually finish it. i think it's safe to say that doing tasks in a timely manner is not one of my strengths!

this morning the meeting with the coach took place - online due to the coach dealing with a bad cold. and because i hadn't slept enough and struggled to get out of bed in the morning, the meeting started while i was still on the train on my way to uni. and later on the bus and finally perched on the edge of a massive plant pot...

but it was actually helpful so i'm really glad i'd signed up for it!

#physics #studying #university #studyblr #she said she enjoyed meeting me on the go like this lol #and said she liked the backdrop of the plant at the end :)#but i think the main takeaway is that i can give myself the permission to explore broadly #and enjoy the process of exploration instead of feeling like i have to know exactly what i want #and that it's ok to change interests and not know what you want to do #it was a really positive experience!#and also she said i was willing to take risks based on some example of things i was proud of #(guerilla decorating some plants in the department during the holiday season and going to work and teaching dressed as a bat on halloween)#i would not have thought of as risk taking hahaha #tbf the whole thing could be summed up as 'oh you have adhd? don't worry there are jobs out there for you where you can be happy'#but it's nice to hear that from someone even if that's literally their job!#............#also they put christmas hats on the statues and busts at uni!!! and it made laugh
