Mark's Dilemma

*This theory contains mild spoilers for the Season 2 finale based on published reviews*

There are a few reviews hinting that Mark will face an impossible choice in the Season 2 finale, something that will make us question if it can ever be a good thing to sever your own soul. I think this "impossible choice" might tie into this scene from the title sequence:

Basically, the opening sequence is rife with images of outie Mark, in red, looking for information while traversing places full of balloon heads of innie Mark.  In the scenes right before this one, we see multiple innie Marks lose their head in a snowy field and fall to their knees, and outie Mark uses one of innie Mark’s balloon heads to go up to a new scene. 

Then we see an innie Mark carry outie Mark to that green field/book being examined by Cobel.   

Across from outie Mark is innie Mark being carried by an outie Mark.  That implies that innie Mark is going on a similar but inverse journey – using outie Mark’s severed balloon heads to get somewhere new. See it again:

What’s most interesting to me is where they end up in this scene.  The outie Mark we are following during the intro sequence is carried by innie Mark to a field full of decapitated innie Marks and balloon heads of Ms. Casey.  Meanwhile, the innie Mark on the other side is being carried to a field full of decapitated outie Marks and balloon heads of Helly. See it again:

To me, this could represent:

That choosing Gemma means decapitating innie Mark

That choosing Helly means decapitating outie Mark

This feels fairly straightforward to represent Mark’s impossible choice. Choosing one love interest means working against the core identity of one of the Marks.  No matter what, a reintegrated Mark has to mourn the love that a part of him felt.

But I think there’s a possible twist, too.  Namely, if we take the Helly and Gemma head balloons to mean that the two women also have been “decapitated” like we see happen with innie Mark, then a path that prioritizes innie Mark’s journey might end up in Helly being "decapitated"/harmed, and a path that prioritizes outie Mark’s journey might end up with Gemma harmed.  Basically, everyone in this sad quadrangle can get turned off forever, and the Marks might be working inadvertently against their own interests. 

I find this possibility way more interesting, though I can’t come up with a coherent theory on how it happens.  Best guess it plays into Cold Harbor.  Innie Mark completing Cold Harbor probably results in Helly never being back on the severed floor (aka dying), though innie Mark doesn’t know this yet.  Meanwhile, we don’t know what Cold Harbor will do to Gemma, but it’s safe to say it will do something.  If Cold Harbor is meant to bring back her consciousness fully, then completing it is good for outie Mark.  But if he can’t finish Cold Harbor because he is reintegrated, or because innie Mark fights him, then he would lose her (or what is left of her, at least). 

One other factor that could play into an “impossible choice” is a pregnancy. (Though it's starting to feel like a red herring to me IMO). Yet another is Gemma herself. Is she really "there" anymore? If she isn't and outie Mark chooses her, holding fast to his grief, it will mega hurt to have lost Helly, too.
