I just finished Partners, by Grace Livingston Hill. I loved this book so much. Five stars, no question. I tend to like her books that are set around Christmas time. Maybe because I love Christmas so much.

The book follows Dale Hathaway, a young secretary working in a big city. She meets George (GLH always names her male protagonists George) Rand by accident one day when he helps her pick up her groceries after the bag rips and they go rolling in every direction on the ground. They don't see each other after that encounter until late one evening in the middle of a terrible snowstorm, George comes to her door to ask for help. He's just found an abandoned baby lying in the vestibule of their apartment building.

Now the two of them must work together to save the poor little baby, freezing cold and suffering from pneumonia. Will the baby make it, and will this experience form a lasting bond between them?

June reading wrap up

In June, I completed six books :)

Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch: I loved this book so much. I bought it on recommendation from my favorite Booktuber Merphy Napier, who gushes over it. The only thing I disliked was the language. It was rather coarse.

Oceans of Mercy by Mallory Ford: I enjoyed this one. Friends to lovers, one of my favorite tropes. The mystery took a back seat to the romance, which wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't a deal breaker.

The Maid in the Mansion by Fiona Grace: I hated this book. It started out okay, but took forever to get to the murder mystery. Once the murder finally did happen, the falsely accused trope made its appearance and I despise that trope. I read one page a day until I finished it because that's all I could stand to read at a time.

No Other Place on Earth by Sheillagh Herrera: I loved this book. It made me cry several times. Sometimes, happy tears, much more often sad tears. A bittersweet, happy ending.

Last of the Mohicans by James F. Cooper: I liked this book okay, but it was way too long. The plot points repeated themselves several times and the characters were too similar and I kept confusing them.

and Thyme to Depart: I loved this book :) A romance story on the side that didn't take away from the mystery, and old house being restored, all fun parts of a good story. The ending made me roll my eyes a bit, as I do not believe in ghosts, but I still enjoyed this one a lot.

It was yesterday when I realized I now own paperbacks of the four Christian fiction books set during the Great Chicago Fire.

If you know of any others, I'd love to hear! I couldn't find any.

Through these "big" moments in history, authors are able to show the ways fictional characters characters are altered and God is the same faithful God.

In #theUncertaintyofFire, Whimsy faces many challenges that mature her and change some preconceived notions she had of the world

In #IntotheWhirlwind, Mollie losing her business forces her to reconsider what she is capable of - and gives her forced proximity with a particular man

In #VeiledinSmoke, Sylvie finds herself struggling with the same ailment her father did while Meg works to defend his name

And in #UntiltheLightBreaksThrough, losing everything he owns forces Luke to step back and look at his own unhealed pain and the wrong ways he'd been handling it

Each of these books is so so different from the others with different portrayals of the Fire and aftermath. With all four, a fuller picture of life in Chicago in 1871 is possible!
