Two Chikungunya Deaths Confirmed in Small Brazilian City
Tumblr media
While the Federative Republic of Brazil continues to lead the Americas during the Chikungunya outbreak in 2025, with over 53,000 cases and 27 related fatalities, a small city recently confirmed an unusually high case fatality rate.
According to local media reporting on March 18, 2025, the city of Xanxerê registered its second Chikungunya-related fatality of 2025.
According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Chikungunya infections are seldom fatal. Estimates vary throughout the Americas, with case-fatality rates ranging between 0.5 and 1.3 deaths per 1000.
Located in Santa Catarina, southern Brazil, this city of just over 50 thousand inhabitants has recorded about 107 Chikungunya cases this year, indicating a very high fatality rate. This news article did not explain this data.

Virus Hideout
The mosquito-borne virus chikungunya, affecting about 3 million a year globally, can cause long term arthritis, among other complications. On infection, macrophages – large cells of the immune system – are chikungunya reservoirs which can be reactivated. This study reveals the molecular mechanisms of entry, production and spread of the virus in and from macrophages

Chikungunya Associated Deaths Continue in Brazil
Tumblr media
The mosquito-transmitted chikungunya disease virus has been reported in Brazil since 2014, with 2024 setting record increases in cases and associated fatalities.
According to Brazil's Ministry of Health Arboviruses report on February 25, 2025, 16 confirmed chikungunya deaths were confirmed this year, on pace with the 236 deaths in 2024.
Unlike last year, the case/death ratio currently exceeds the data reported in the previous year.

Change the Channel
Blocking the budding of viruses – when they wrap themselves in the host cell membrane and move off to spread the infection – could be a good strategy to stop them in their tracks. Researchers interested in alphaviruses – a type that includes chikungunya and Sindbis viruses – examined the role of a protein called 6K in virus assembly and spreading. They found that it functions as a channel to let molecules pass through membranes, like has been seen in proteins of HIV and influenza. This ion channel activity was needed for the formation of vacuoles in the cell, which promote the transport of proteins to the cell lining where they are incorporated into new virus particles (these proteins in red spread throughout the membrane, left, compared to clumping in the absence of 6K, right). Interfering with 6K action could be a new way to treat infection, and nip budding in the bud.
