Chen Duling as Wen Xiao has me fascinated the same way Cheng Yi as Li Lianhua does. They both tapped into very specific mannerisms, expressions, ways of speaking, and it makes the characters feel so incredibly real. like I could run into them at a grocery store any day. obsessed

I took quite a long break from this blog in order to sort out some chaos in my personal life, and more personally because I really wanted to do my best in composing the most heartfelt review of The First Frost (2025). I finished A Dream like the True Love after starting it yesterday - it's a mini (so significantly shorter episodes than a normal drama), but I also pretty much binge watched it because it COMPELLED ME.

Loved it from the beginning to the end. The heroine was a genuine delight to watch - she had a girl power arc, but written in such a way that it made sense for her time period. She started the story as a poor and uneducated peasant girl, but because of her bravery and morals, she essentially gained the affection of a noble family, the gratitude of an emperor and the eternal love of their son.

They did a very good job with the hero as well, who was forced to take what is usually a stereotypical feminine role - to be the concubine of a powerful person and bend to said powerful person's whims, the cost for disobedience being harm or death. This horrific backstory also explained why the hero essentially becomes a monogamous man in a polygamous society, who refuses to marry anyone but the heroine, even with her gone.

Fellow mutual @dangermousie explained it best when she said that they are two wholesome people thrown in a crazy narrative. It was very satisfying to see them survive against all odds and find happiness together.
