#BaguioEats: Savoring authentic Japanese delights at Chaya
Hubby and I recently took the fam on a much-deserved break in Baguio, the charming city known for its cool weather, scenic landscapes, and delightful dining experiences. Aside from the sightseeing and the meet-ups with family and friends, the family certainly looked forward to the foodie adventures that the City of Pines has to offer. Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Publishing Group for providing me with an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review
âœ©đŸ–€đŸ’„Review:
“Of Light and Shadow” is an epic Indian fantasy romance!
Bhathena draws inspiration for her novel from Indian bandits throughout history—specifically from the famous female bandit Phoolan Devi. As someone who was not familiar with Phoolan’s historical impact before reading the book, I enjoyed learning about her through Bhathena’s fictional protagonist Roshan Chaya. Roshan closely resembles Phoolan in that she, too, was wanted for robbery and kidnapping after capturing Prince Navin during a raid. Despite her crimes, Roshan is beloved by Jwalian villagers—just like Phoolan was greatly admired by the people of India— because she does what she can to fight for their rights.
Bhathena successfully weaves magic into her narrative to add intrigue. In the world of “Of Light and Shadow” there is life magic, death magic, and soul magic. The reader learns more about life magic and death magic through Roshan’s perspective. As a life magus, Roshan uses her energy to heal rather than harm. Though she saves many lives, the papers villainize her for being an outlaw. I for one found her character to be very admirable. She is a strong warrior who only wants the best for her clan. She does not shy away from a fight and knows how to hold her own, which is refreshing to see in a female protagonist.
Prince Navin’s perspective offers readers insight on soul magic and palace life. In addition to using his voice to manipulate emotions, Navin’s soul magic allow him to see the aura of those who are bonded to him. But his powerful magic does not come without cost. As a soul magus, Navin is subject to painful mouth blisters when he overexerts himself. Up until he was held hostage by the Shadow Clan, palace hakims, healers, were at his beck and call whenever he used copious amounts of magic to avoid his responsibilities as the spare prince.
At the beginning of the novel, the pair consider each other enemies. However, the longer Navin spends time with his captives while they wait for the queen to meet the clan’s demands, the more he begins to realize that his people are suffering under his grandmother’s rule. I loved watching Roshan and Navin butt heads while they worked together to enact change and struggle to deny their romantic connection before ultimately acknowledging their feelings.

Everworld Series (4/12) By K.A. Applegate
Tumblr media
Realm of the Reaper
Another book another POV. This one is from Jalil. You finally get to understand the relationship, if that's what you want to call it, between him and Senna.
Jalil has an interesting little issue. In the real world, he's got OCD, like bad. He can't handle dirt at all, but for some odd reason he has no issue what-so-ever in Everworld. Weird. But
"W.T.E Welcome to Everworld".
It doesn't surprise me. Neither does the talking pig. Or maybe warthog is a better name for it cuz when I think of pig I think of like Wilbur or Hen Wen. They take a swim, find another town. They get into the town just fine. But they aren't getting out easily.
This lovely little town is controlled by Hel. Loki's daughter. And she is bat shit crazy. She's also this half-dead, half-alive being that really just gave my imagination the creeps. They end up in a pit, and at of the end of the path what do they find.... you got it a pot of gold... still no Lucky Charms Leprechaun,  just a pissed off dragon that sends them on a quest to get his shit back. From who you wonder? The fairies, the fae, the lurachmain. Yep, Leprechauns. we found Christopher's leprechauns finally.
Oh did I mention they find Senna again? Well they do.
This is where the book ends.

Ari Drennen and Alyssa Tirrell at MMFA:
At a September 7 rally in Wisconsin, former President Donald Trump again repeated his baseless claim that schools could be providing gender-affirming surgeries to minors without parental consent. Mainstream outlets have debunked Trump's claim, assuring readers that “no children are going to school and receiving surgery there for gender dysphoria.” According to CNN, “Trump’s own presidential campaign could not provide a single example of this ever happening.”  But accusations that schools "groom" children into identifying as trans have circulated throughout right-wing media and politics in recent years. Some outlets and media figures have gone even further.
At a 2023 event, Rafael Cruz, father of Texas senator and onetime Trump primary opponent Ted Cruz, claimed that children were being “mutilated” by gender affirming care in public schools. Right-wing outlets including National Review, The Federalist, and The Daily Wire have all promoted claims that public schools are providing cross-sex hormones to children, leaving out of their headlines the important detail that parental consent is required to access this treatment.  The day before Trump made this claim, the account Libs of TikTok also appeared to make the same unsubstantiated accusation by implication.
The National Center for Youth Law notes that under the law in question, only very specific services can be provided for minors without parental consent, such as STD testing, abortion care, and treatment for sexual abuse. Those services do not include gender-affirming care, which cannot be provided to a minor without parental consent in the state of California.  Libs of TikTok has a documented history of posting misleading and false content. Chaya Raichik, the creator behind the account, has maintained a right to do so as recently as February 2024, asking an interviewer who questioned the policy, "Is there a law against lying?”
[...] Right-wing activists appear to see Trump’s words not as statements to be evaluated for accuracy, but rather as non literal expressions of presidential priorities. And indeed, the former president has laid out a draconian set of policy proposals targeting the trans community in a hypothetical second term.  These proposals include targeting federal funding for hospitals providing gender-affirming care, creating a “new credentialing body” for teachers that promotes conservative ideas about the nuclear family, and asking “Congress to pass a bill establishing that the only genders recognized by the United States government are male and female, and they are assigned at birth.”
Where did Donald Trump get his berserk lie about schools and gender-confirming surgeries from? Right-wing anti-trans extremists such as Libs of TikTok.
These are the same extremists who falsely equate gender-affirming care to “mutilation” and baselessly equate trans identity to “social contagion.”

A Year in (Book) Review: My 2024 Reading Journey 📚
Tumblr media
#19 - Resistance by Jennifer A. Nielsen
Historical fiction / 333 pages / published 2018 / Finished Feb. 8
One Sentence Review: The most heartbreaking book I've ever read, made all the more so because it was based on true events and people, this book is a picture of the worst of humanity and also the best, for when evil rears its ugly head, true heroes always emerge to say, “No.”
Favorite Quotes
"Never stop hoping, right? That's what keeps us alive, to never stop hoping for a happy ending."
*
"May we never forget. May we live with honor at all times, regardless of our circumstances. And may we choose love, a weapon that will defeat hate every time. Love is the resistance."
*
"Our children never know how much we love them."
*
"Historians might say that the Jews lost every uprising we attempted in this war, that every resistance movement failed. I disagree. We proved that there is value in faith. There was value in loyalty. And that a righteous resistance was victory in itself, no matter the outcome. We got our three lines of history."
*
"Just because God allows something to happen does not mean he wants it to happen."
*
"'What good is faith if you're dead?'
'What good is life without faith?''
My rating: 5/5
A Few More Thoughts (Spoilers)
It was so good - very well-written and interesting, had me at the edge of my seat the whole way through - and it was by far the saddest and hardest book I've ever read. Chaya is such a strong, heroic protagonist, and that she was based on real-life girls is incredible.
Along with the sheer atrocity and horror at this glimpse of the Nazi regime and WW2 in Poland, I found myself most struck by how the ZOB resistance in Warsaw - all resistance, actually - fought for something so much bigger than themselves, knowing most of them would die, but that wasn't the point. They fought and died not for their own lives, but for the lives and futures of their people.
I don't have words to express how horrific the very real atrocities from the Holocaust I read about in this book were. But it did help remind me that when evil does rise, so do good, selfless, heroic, and lovely people who are willing to do and sacrifice anything to help those in need and fight the evil with no regard to their own lives, just those of others.

Book Blurb: "Haunting, exhilarating, and a howl of vengeance." —Andrew Joseph White, New York Times bestselling author of Hell Followed With UsFrankenstein meets Inglourious Basterds in this stunning Jewish historical horror novel from the award-winning author of The City Beautiful
Vera was made for vengeance.
Lithuania, 1943. A father drowns in the all-consuming grief of a daughter killed by the Nazis. He can’t bring Chaya back from the dead, but he can use kishuf — an ancient and profane magic — to create a golem in her image. A Nazi killer, to avenge her death.
When Vera awakens, she can feel her violent purpose thrumming within her. But she can also feel glimpses of a human life lived, of stolen kisses amidst the tragedy, and of a grisly death. And when she meets Akiva, she recognizes the boy with soft lips that gave warm kisses. But these memories aren’t hers, and Vera doesn’t know if she gets—or deserves—to have a life beyond what she was made for.
Vera’s strength feels limitless—until she learns that there are others who would channel kishuf for means far less noble than avenging a daughter’s death. As she confronts the very basest of humanity, Vera will need more than what her creator gave her: Not just a reason to fight, but a reason to live.
Review:
Frankenstein meets Inglorious Basterds in this Jewish historical horror story about a grieving father who's daughter is killed by Nazis, and thus he creates a Gollum using ancient magic.... and human body parts in the image of his daughter to have the golem become a Nazi killer and avenge his daughter's death. Vera wakes up in a world she doesn't know but the only thing anchoring her is the violent purpose thrumming in her. She is made of clay, human parts, and magic... and her only purpose is to get revenge for Ezra, the father of Chaya... Ezra made Vera from Chaya's dead body after she was murdered and he wants Vera to avenge Chaya... yet Vera is beginning to get bits and pieces of Chaya's own memories and feelings, making her question who she is and what part of her is truly her? Vera is a gollum yet she is beginning to feel things, to have her own thoughts, and yet she'll have to navigate revenge, war, and the memories of a girl who is gone. This is a fantastic mixture of Frankenstein with historical horror and Inglorious Basterds. I was absolutely captivated by this book. Vera's struggles with finding her own autonomy and her own place in this world was so well done and the question of what makes a monster really a monster and the struggle of understanding humanity was so well drawn out. This is a fantastic read and I would highly recommend it!

Wrath Becomes Her review
Tumblr media
4/5 stars Recommended if you like: historical fantasy, Jewish folklore, revenge plotlines
This book held so much potential and while it was enjoyable it also fell kind of flat for me. The main problems I had were that the plot kind of felt like it drifted along from beginning to end without really a main 'push' at any point and that it still felt like we didn't really know Vera by the end of the book. When a character grapples with their identity and who they are and what it means to be human (or not), you want to really be able to sink your teeth into that and walk away feeling confident that the character knows who they are. Unfortunately, in this book I think Vera was still kind of wishy-washy at the end of the book. Finding purpose is not the same as finding self.
Related to that is the fact I feel we don't really get to know any of the other characters very well either. Chaya's father isn't really in it for too long, Akiva is in most of the book but there's a distance between both him and Vera and him and the reader, and then other characters that pop in and out and don't really have much of a chance to develop. I do feel like I got a good grip on Miriam though, which is kind of odd since she really wasn't in most of the book.
Vera starts right off the bat as an interesting character. She is a golem made with forbidden magic in the image of her creator's dead daughter, Chaya. He built her with emotions so that she could feel the rage and grief Jews were experiencing at the hands of Nazis and be able to exact meaningful revenge. I thought her exploring what it means to be golem vs. human was interesting and I really enjoyed how she had a connection with the scribes of the past, Chaya and Ezra, and the river she came from. I definitively would've liked to explore more of her inner world and see more of her coming into herself. I actually thought Vera was plenty emotional, but I definitely would've liked to see more of it, more of everything re: Vera, actually. I think Polydoros had some really interesting themes and questions going and I liked seeing Vera figure stuff out about herself and the world, but I think that needed to be a bigger focus of the book, and maybe the book even needed to be longer, so that Vera felt more like a well-rounded and developed character by the end.
Akiva was Chaya's lover and is still reeling from the pain of her loss, as well as all the other losses he's suffered since the Nazis invaded Lithuania. He definitely had rage in abundance. I did at times feel like I felt Akiva's emotions more than I felt Vera's and it was somewhat of an odd juxtaposition between someone who said they were rageful and someone who actually is. While on the one hand I can understand that Akiva's trajectory and everything he does in the book is inevitable considering his past....I also kind of felt weird about how he ends the book.
The plot, as mentioned, is a bit drifty up until the very end, which made it feel kind of disconnected from the rest of the book. It's obvious from the beginning that that's where the book is going, there's no other option except for Vera to facedown some Nazis in a big showdown, but at the same time, so little of what happens feels active that it almost felt like a different book. I would've liked to see more partisan action leading up to the ending, and honestly probably more action at the end too. There's a good action scene or two in there, but considering the themes of vengeance and rage, I would've liked to see more.
In all, I think this is an enjoyable book that grapples with questions of human vs. non-human monstrosity as well as what revenge can look like when everything's been taken from you. I did like the characters but felt like there was some emotional distance between them and me that I would've preferred not be there.

Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and historian Erickson and return from a time travel to observe the dawn of the Orion civilization while Doctor McCoy alogside historians Grey and Aleek-Om and they notice something strange. It seems that they does not know who Spock is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aboard the Enterprise, thet are received by Engineer Scott and he also does not recognize who Spock is. The First Officer's position is occupied by an Andorian named Thelin instead of Spock. After consulting the memory banks from the Enterprise's library computer, they learn that Mr. Spock was killed at the age of seven and his mother died in a shuttle accident.
Tumblr media
Kirk and Spock are beamed down again to the planet. They asked Grey and Aleek-Om if they used the Guardian while Spock was in Orion's past. They have found that both historians were 30 years in the past of planet Vulcan where Spock died on his maturity test.
Tumblr media
He remembers that a mysterious cousin named Selek saved him from death at that age. Spock assumes the role of that cousin and travels to his native planet Vulcan back in time using the Guardian of Forever.
Spock arrives to his hometown, the city of ShiKar, close to the twentieth day of the month of Tasmeen, shortly before his younger self was ready to enter the Kahs-Wan maturity test. As Selek, adult Spock met his father, Sarek, his mother, Amanda and his pet shelat, I-Chaya.
Tumblr media
Young Spock enters the maturity test followed by I-Chaya and secretly followed by adult Spock. In the journey thru the desert, the young Spock face the attack of a ferocious creature, le-matya. During the ordeal, adult Spock saves the life of his younger self by applying the nerve pinch to the creature. During the battle, I-Chaya was hurt by the poison of the le-matya. Young Spock has to run across the desert to find a healer to cure I-Chaya. He has to choose between to give his pet a longer but painful life, or release him from his suffering. With the advice from his adult self, young Spock choose to put to sleep I-Chaya. Then, the young Spock decides to follow the Vulcan ways of his father, Sarek.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the life his his younger self and his mother were saved, the timeline was restored and Spock returns to the present thru the Guardian of Forever.
Fascinating Facts:
This is the only story written by D.C. Fontana for The Animated series. Fontana's main duties on this series were Story Editor and Associate Producer. At The Original Series, Dorothy Fontana served as Writer and Story Consultant. She wrote four stories, co-wrote three stories and scripted four stories.
D. C. Fontana wrote this story to look back her experience on The Original Series. Spock was her favorite main character and she made her focus on two stories he wrote on him, “Journey to Babel” and “This Side of Paradise”. She wanted to explore on Spock's formative years, specially on his early relationship with his family.
The shelat pet, I-Chaya was mentioned first in the TOS episode “Journey to Babel” as “a fat teddy bear” with six-inch fangs.
Tumblr media
In addition to the mention of Spock's pet in “Journey to Babel”, another source of inspiration Fontana used for I-Chaya, was her cat named Bobby McGee. His name is inspred by a song from Janis Joplin.
The Guardian of Forever appeared for the first time in the first season episode of TOS, “City on the Edge of Forever. In TOS, it was voiced by Bartell La Rue but in this episode was voiced by James Doohan.
Jane Wyatt was not available at the time for recording for the character of Amanda Grayson. Mark Lenard was one of three guest stars to voice their characters on both TOS and TAS. The other two were Roger C. Carmel as Harry Mudd and Stanley Adams as Cyrano Jones.

[RERUN] Yesteryear (Time travel that doesn’t necessarily mess up the timeline)
[All images owned by Filmation and Paramount. Please don’t sue me]
Tumblr media
Possibly one of the most powerful episodes in The Animated Series was a call back to The Original Series episode The Guardian of Forever...
Tumblr media
...which featured a portal capable of sending individuals back in time. Following the episode was to have taken place, the Federation put restrictions on the Guardian’s use to avoid altering the timeline (a “Temporal Prime Directive”, if you will)
Which brings us up to speed. If you would like to see the original review, you may do so here. If you would like to see the episode, it’s available on Paramount+, or if you don’t have a subscription it’s available on Internet Archive.
[Quick note: One thing I didn’t mention in the series review was the cost-cutting measures for the voice cast. First off, Filmation originally just wanted William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley (those three for obvious reasons), James Doohan (who, thanks to his versatile voice (he gave over half a dozen accents when auditioning for Scotty before Roddenberry settled on the Scotsman), could convincingly voice any male character the producers needed (including Lt. Arex and all but one of the supporting male characters in this episode), and Majel Barrett (for the female characters, including Lt. M’ress), but Nimoy refused to join the cast unless George Takei and Nichelle Nichols were brought in as well. Poor Walter Koenig gets no love.]
The Enterprise is assigned to assist a team of historians using the Guardian to study Orion history (the military on an academic mission? What could possibly go wrong?) While McCoy assists the historians, the Guardian (voiced by Doohan) announces the return of Kirk, Spock, and a random redshirt...
youtube
(Thanks to CBS)
And this is why you don’t use a time vortex unsupervised, kids!
Tumblr media
The scientists admit they were scanning Vulcan history while Kirk, Spock, and the redshirt were in Orion’s past. In the new history, Spock’s younger self died during the kahs-wan maturity test. Spock recalls he was saved from an attack by a wild animal during that time by a cousin named Selik.
Kirk and Spock concluded (through some wild speculation) that “Selik” was Spock, gone back to the past to save himself (which couldn’t happen since Spock was already in the time vortex when the historians viewed Vulcan using the Guardian. Does your head hurt yet?)
Spock prepares to return to Vulcan to repair the damage (hopefully without changing history further). Thelin realizes this will mean he won’t be on the Enterprise after the repair is made (so? You’ll probably be First Officer on some other starship, no doubt still with distinction), but wishes Spock good luck.
Tumblr media
While this isn’t the first visit to Vulcan (that happened during the TOS episode Amok Time), it is the first glimpse of the Vulcan landscape (Amok Time just showed a mountaintop that spanned the length of a soundstage).
youtube
(Thanks again to CBS)
Geez Sarek (voiced by Mark Lenard, who played Sarek in The Original Series), no pressure or anything!
Spock recalls that he had gone into the desert as a “practice run” for the kahs-wan on the day he was attacked.
Tumblr media
Of course, he remembered after his younger self left (with I-Chaya following)
Tumblr media
“Selik” catches up with Spock as the boy is being chased by a Vulcan carnivore known as a La Macha.
Tumblr media
I-Chaya manages to fight off the beast until “Selik” could subdue it. Spock then has a heart-to-heart with himself (confused yet?) and reveals that Vulcans aren’t emotionless, but merely learn to suppress them in favor of logic and reason (the first time this is ever mentioned in Star Trek)
In the middle of this revelation...
youtube
(Thanks to St ar)
Forgive me, I have a bit of loss of innocence in my eye *sniff*
Tumblr media
Spock returns to the present to see all is back to normal (including McCoy being his usual semi-racist self toward Spock)
Tumblr media
Filmation, upon reading the original script, didn’t want to have I-Chaya’s death in the episode, but Roddenberry insisted they use DC Fontana’s script as written, and it made for an important lesson in dealing with loss for kids.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go have a good cry now.

Whenever Oklahoma teenager Nex Benedict was bullied at school for being transgender, their mother Sue Benedict would encourage the 16-year-old to rise above their tormentors.
“I said ‘you’ve got to be strong and look the other way, because these people don’t know who you are’,” Ms Benedict told The Independent in a phone interview.
“I didn’t know how bad it had gotten.”
The bullying had started in earnest at the beginning of the 2023 school year, a few months after Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill that required public school students to use bathrooms that matched the sex listed on their birth certificates.
A few weeks ago, on 7 February, the bullying allegedly erupted in violence when Nex suffered severe head injuries during a “physical altercation” at Owasso High School, according to the Owasso Police Department.
Sue Benedict told The Independent she was called to the school that day to find Nex badly beaten with bruises over their face and eyes, and with scratches on the back of their head.
Nex told her that they and another transgender student at Owasso High School had been in a fight with three older girls in a girls bathroom. Nex was knocked to the ground during the fight and hit their head on the floor, according to their mother.
Ms Benedict said she was furious that the school had failed to call an ambulance or the police. She said the school then informed her Nex was being suspended for two weeks.
She took Nex to the Bailey Medical Center in Owasso for treatment. They spoke to a police school resource officer at the medical facility and were discharged.
That night, Nex went to bed with a sore head and eventually fell asleep while listening to music, Ms Benedict said.
On 8 February, Nex was getting ready to go to Tulsa with Ms Benedict for an appointment when they collapsed in the family living room.
Ms Benedict called an ambulance, and EMT officers arrived to find Nex had stopped breathing. Nex was declared dead that evening in hospital.
In a statement, the Owasso Police Department said they were “conducting a very active and thorough investigation of the time and events that led up to the death of the student”.
Owasso PD spokesperson Nick Boatman told The Independent that police were awaiting the results of toxicology and autopsy reports from the Oklahoma Medical Examiner’s Office before determining whether anyone will be charged.
Mr Boatman said “all charges will be on the table” once a cause of death was confirmed.
In an update on Tuesday 20 February, Mr Boatman said detectives were interviewing school staff and students and would be submitting their investigation to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution review.
An Owasso Public Schools spokesperson declined to provide information about the assault or the school’s response when contacted by The Independent, citing the active police investigation.
LGBTQ advocacy groups have described Nex’s death as a “hate crime”, and linked it to the “hateful rhetoric spewed by leaders in our state” and the Libs of TikTok account run by far-right social media influencer Chaya Raichik.
Ms Raichik, a New York-based former real estate agent, became a cause celebre among conservatives for using her Libs of TikTok account to post edited, anti-trans videos that target public school teachers and librarians.
An Owasso High School teacher who Nex had greatly admired resigned in 2022 after they were featured in one of Ms Raichik’s posts.
Ms Raichik did not respond to a request for comment by The Independent. On X, she denied any link to the death and said she was unjustly being blamed for a murder.
Like many parents, Sue Benedict and her husband Walter at times struggled to understand the nuances of Nex’s gender fluidity.
Ms Benedict is Nex’s biological grandmother, and raised them since they were two months old along with her five other children. She formally adopted Nex a few years ago.
She told The Independent that Nex was always understanding if she used an incorrect pronoun, or called Nex by their birth name.
“Nex did not see themselves as male or female,” Ms Benedict said. “Nex saw themselves right down the middle. I was still learning about it, Nex was teaching me that.”
“When you’re old school, you don’t always understand it,” her husband Walter told The Independent.
“But it would be very boring if we were all the same. It’s on the inside that matters the most.”
The family, who trace part of their roots to the Choctaw Nation, encouraged open discussions about questions of gender and identity.
“I was very open with my children to be who and what they thought was best,” Ms Benedict said.
“They could talk to me about anything, as long as that respect goes both ways. A child needs to figure out who they are and what they want to be, and you cannot force it upon them.”
Nex’s sister Malia Pila, who is also a member of the LGBTQ community, told The Independent in an interview that Nex’s fluid gender identity “was not an issue nor anything that anybody cared about” within the family.
Nex was a straight-A student who enjoyed drawing, reading, playing video games Ark and Minecraft, and was devoted to their cat Zeus, Ms Benedict said.
“I was so proud of Nex. They were going some place, they were so free,” she said.
In April 2022, Owasso High School teacher Tyler Wrynn was featured in a surreptitiously filmed Libs of TikTok post telling students: “If your parents don’t accept you for who you are, f*** them.”
The incident sparked a backlash in the small Oklahoma city of 40,000 residents, and Mr Wrynn resigned from the Owasso Public Schools system.
“Nex was very angry about it,” Ms Benedict said. Ms Benedict said that teachers who encourage debate about gender issues were not promoting sexualised content.
“They’re allowing the students to be who they are.”
Ms Benedict said she first became aware that Nex was being bullied at school in early 2023.
“They’d go straight to their room and put it on their radio, and I’d say ‘OK you gotta decompress for a little bit, and then come out and talk about it’.”
Ms Benedict said she remains furious at the school for failing to call police or seek medical attention for Nex, and wants to see the children who allegedly assaulted Nex punished.
“So many people push kids to be one thing, and you’ve got to let them find themselves and be who they should be,” Ms Benedict said.
“Society has got to see them as they are. Accept them and go on, because we are all people.”
Last August, a Libs of TikTok post showing an edited video critical of a public school librarian in Tulsa led to several consecutive days of bomb threats to schools in the district.
Ms Raichik’s anti-LGBTQ posts have been linked to nearly three dozen threats made towards schools, libraries, hospitals and businesses across 16 states, according to a recent NBC News investigation.
Last month, Oklahoma’s Republican superintendent of public schools Ryan Walters appointed Ms Raichik to the state’s library advisory committee.
Mr Walters has not commented publicly on Nex’s death. He put out a video on X on President’s Day, decrying “radical woke college professors” for placing Donald Trump at the bottom of a list of the United States’ greatest presidents.
“We judge presidents by outcomes not woke ideology,” he said
Freedom Oklahoma, an LGBTQ advocacy group, blamed Oklahoman lawmakers and Ms Raichik for promoting bigotry and intolerance towards trans students after Nex’s death.
The group said that Ms Raichik “continues to use her platform in a way that leads others to threaten real harm at Oklahoma kids”.
“We want to be clear, whether Nex died as a direct result of injuries sustained in the brutal hate-motivated attack at school or not, Nex’s death is a result of being the target of physical and emotional harm because of who Nex was,” the group wrote.
Since Nex’s death, Ms Benedict said she had barely slept and been “walking in a blur”.
When it came time to place an obituary, Ms Benedict said she had provided Nex’s birth name by accident. This has led to some media coverage of Nex’s death using their birth name, or dead name.
“When you are going through something like this and you lose a child, you’re not thinking right. We’re getting a headstone done and Nex will be on there,” she said.
Nex’s funeral was held at the Mowery Funeral Service on 15 February. After the service, police officers from Owasso and the neighbouring city of Collinsville accompanied members of the local chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse as they provided an escort from the service to the graveside.
A GoFundme page set up to help with funeral costs has raised $28,000 and Ms Benedict said she plans to donate most of the money to LGBTQ anti-bullying organisations.
“Nex had a light in them that was so big, they had so many dreams. I want their light to keep shining for everyone. That light was so big and bright and beautiful, and I want everyone to remember Nex that way.”

Everworld Series (3/12) By K.A. Applegate
Tumblr media
Enter the Enchanted
So once again this starts off bascially where the other one ends except this time it's from April's POV.
We are back to a giant dragon and even more craziness.
I realize I haven't really talked about  the real life lives they are living. You'll have to read it, but they do have a whole other story line going on while they are back in the real world and how they are each copping with what's going on.
It was interesting to see how each of them have reacted to this differently. David is happy about it, he's loving being a hero and not having to deal with his crappy real life, Christopher is treating it like it's just one big joke or a dream or something and eventually he will get out. Then you have Jalil who is still a huge mystery, but is mostly convinced it's just a weird parallel universe. He's big on science.
April, at this point, is denying everything about it. She just wants to think that if she wills it enough she will stay in the real world. I think she might be losing her mind a little at this point and to be perfectly honestly, I have no idea how I would deal with this kind of situation so they are all taking it way better then I think most would.
You find out more about her relationship, or lack there of, with Senna and why there really is no love loss between these half sisters.
She ends up with a HUGE crush on Sir Galahad. The sisters fight. David is still a love sick fool, not all his fault, but still. Merlin, the knights of the round table, Loki, and the main characters all have a happy family dinner where Loki explains what he wants with Senna and then all hell breaks loose. Again. Can they just eat in peace without someone trying to kill these poor kids? No? Okay.
Off they go again running. I have to seriously ask if this author has a thing for Doctor Who because that's the only think I have ever experienced this much running in.
After some zombies, trolls and some quick thinking on April's part they get away. For a bit. Loki and his trolls catch up. Senna gets away in the chaos and they have to go try and find her again.
