today I tried to convince my gen z coworkers (23 & 21 yo) not to use chat gpt for their college assignments. I told them it's better to fail in style now than finding out in five years that they don't understand shit and can't do their job properly. They, of course, use it for a myriad of things and have no idea how to really use search engines, so I offered to help them if they need to. They're good kids, I think, and they deserve to at least know how to use all the tools available.
I don't think they cared much tbh 🤣 but they told me they'll try to use it less now. I know it was a "shut up grandma" thing, it makes me so sad they waste their brains in AI slop

Photographers all know about polarizing filters. They remove reflections off the surfaces of objects. We use them to see into water or windows that are obscured by those reflections. But anything with an even slightly glossy surface has a layer of reflection on top. So if you have a shiny green plant, it can remove the shiny and reveal a very saturated green underneath. Polarizers also remove a lot of scattered and reflected light from the sky. Which reveals a deep blue color you didn't even know was there.
Here is a photo I took of my circular polarizer.
Tumblr media
And the first thing I noticed when walking outside during the eclipse was the color of everything was more saturated, just like in that circle. Apparently, an eclipse significantly reduces polarized light and I got this creepy feeling because I was only ever used to seeing the world like that through the viewfinder of my camera.
The other thing I noticed was my outdoor lights. I leave them on all the time because I never remember to turn them on at night. And usually the sun will render them barely visible during the day. On a very sunny day they almost look like they are off.
Tumblr media
But you can clearly see they are shining and even flaring the camera during the eclipse.
Our eyes adjust to lighting changes very well so it was hard to tell how much dimmer things were, but that is a good indication. I took this photo a few minutes ago and you can see how dim the lights appear after the moon has fucked off.
Tumblr media
I did a calculation using the exposure settings between these two photos. The non-eclipse photo has 7 f-stops more light. That is 128 times or 12,700% more light.
A partial Pringle eclipse cut the sun's light by 99.2% and somehow our eyes adjusted to make it seem like a normal sunny day (with weird ass saturated colors).

“chat gpt said” or “I asked google Gemini and” ok - your mom called and said she misses when you had innate curiosity and a yearning for knowledge that lit up your eyes.

I thank every God that I'm both Mexican and brown so I don't have any white guilt lmao
Because I see people saying things like "Oh my God! I can't believe people are making Jayce violent just because he's brown! That's so racist"
And I'm here like "You mean the character with the giant hammer? the league of legends character with the giant magical hammer that shots lasers? that's the character you call non-violent?"
Because seriously, what do you think he's doing with the hammer in the game? Giving away flowers and candy?
And you might say "but that's only in the game"
And I'm like: his fight with Vi, his 2 fights with Viktor (though the second one was more like Viktor kicking his ass), that time he killed Salo, that time he shot Viktor while Viktor's guard was down
But my point is, while it is true that Jayce isn't inherently violent; saying that Jayce ISN'T violent at all is also just wrong
Because it's funny that I've seen people going to extremes with Jayce and Viktor lmao
Like Jayce isn't a Himbo, but he is naive in a lot of ways; he's kind, but he isn't exactly soft; he's harsh but not merciless; he's smart, but a lot of times he misses the forest for the trees; he's aggressive, but not in a brutish way
He's a complex character that is very similar to a real man, and I don't think you can fit his whole personality within a post on Xwitter or Bluesky lmao
That's why I love JayVik, because these two are two very complex characters, very flawed and contradictory and yet, they still managed to fit with each other; because Jayce is capable of looking at Viktor with all his flaws and love him, not despite of them, but because those are also him. And I think for Viktor is the same, he loves Jayce with all his flaws
But then people just say: "it's racist to say that Jayce is violent" and I'm here like
Listen, you need to recognize that at some point in your need to not make something accidentally racist you've gone 360 and are completely back at basically saying that brown people aren't capable of the complete range of human emotions, ergo, brown people aren't as complex as white people. Which, this goes without saying, that is bad
And while it is true that there's a stereotype about brown people being more aggressive, in Jayce's case being violent is not his entire personality, like I said; he's a complex character, if his only characteristic was being violent then yeah, that's a problem, but violence it's just something that he does depending on the context. Like, you know how human beings are known to be violent at times
And see, I think that's the problem with the fandom's characterization of both Jayce and Viktor
Because, for example, when I say "Viktor isn't mean" I don't say it in a "Viktor will never be mean towards anyone" way, but more in a "there are very specific circumstances under which Viktor will be mean, and interacting with Jayce in an every day scenario isn't one of them" but I wholeheartedly believe that Viktor could be mean if the situations called for it. Just look at how he basically deadnamed Jinx, you can't tell me that wasn't Viktor purposely being mean lmao
So, with Jayce, I don't believe that his first reaction would be violence on most occasions, but say, if someone was harassing Viktor, would Jayce punch them without thinking? Yeah, probably

jayvik au where viktor is the name of an ai automated lab assistant in jayce’s workplace that operates various precision tools like the hexclaw, and viktor slowly gains sentience as the researchers shift his role from mechanical aid to full on lab butler getting coffee for them and shit
eventually viktor falls in love with jayce because jayce is the only person in this lab of complete assholes that says thank you after viktor helps them

reposting this bc the OP blocked me (and is blocking anyone else who disagrees which means blocked people can't reblog) and i want to say this loud and with my whole chest!!!!!
another Dragon Age fic was recently outed as being AI, and this is what the writer had to say for themselves about it:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so actually, Grammarly uses generative AI and is just as bad as ChatGPT. it also objectively makes your writing worse, it sucks the voice out of your prose and turns it into corporate sounding homogenized paste. it's also unethical for all the same reasons any generative AI is unethical. get a writing group and have a real human beta read for you if you don't trust yourself to check your own grammar etc. but honestly something unpolished and written entirely by your human brain and human imagination will ALWAYS be better than AI slop.
also, the part about published authors doing this is patently untrue. i know this is a huge problem in the self-publishing space, but most publishers now are including clauses in their contracts that expressly forbid the use of AI in ANY part of the creative process. this includes using ChatGPT to generate or clean up outlines or Grammarly to spellcheck and revise. so if you're trying to publish, don't fucking do this or you could literally be asked to return an advance if you get caught.
i've posted about this in the past, but AI detectors are actually shocking accurate these days. i've tested them extensively recently and they can consistently and correctly flag individual sentences written by ChatGPT in an otherwise original passage. and they almost never flag false positives. so the argument that AI detectors can't be trusted is just flat out wrong. are they correct 100% of the time? no. but can they indicate with a high degree of accuracy if AI was used in some capacity? absolutely, especially if there is additional evidence.
and for all the people hand wringing about AI detectors flagging false positives, let me just say this: if something is not AI written it is very easy to prove. you can't write anything of any considerable length without leaving a massive paper trail of notes and drafts. almost all writing software tracks changes and makes it very easy to prove you wrote something yourself. being falsely being accused of AI isn't actually a real problem and is only being made to seem as such by people who are trying to get away with and justify using AI or who are worried about getting caught.
i think a lot of people are just lured by a seemingly easy shortcut, and to their untrained eye, what the AI is spitting out feels "better" to them than their own writing. but i promise you it's not. trust your own brain and put in the work to improve at your craft rather than outsourcing the gift of your imagination to a robot that steals from other people's work.
i will continue to die on this hill!!!!!

DON'T SCROLL PAST!
please, listen. i'm writing this to inform you about @laylaayman-blog 's campaign, which has already been verified by @90-ghost , @bilal-salah0 , @a-shade-of-blue and others:
Laila is 24 years old and has to sustain not only herself, but also her children and the rest of her family. we can only imagine how difficult surviving is in a place that's being constantly bombarded and surrounded by drones.
we can't abandon her, especially considering that her campaign has not even reached HALF of its planned goal!
please, donate if you are able, even the smallest amount can make a big difference. and remember to share this campaign widely, which costs you NOTHING.
DO SOMETHING USEFUL WITH YOUR LIFE AND HELP THIS FAMILY. HISTORY HAS ITS EYES ON YOU.

do you think it's weird or unfounded to not want to use chat gpt due to the environmental cost? i feel really strongly that i want to completely avoid it (and, like, recreational/work related ai in general) for that reason, but people seem to think this is really weird when i express that as a reason. but i feel like i should be able to make this call if i want to and that's a good reason to not use it. i don't know?!?!?! i don't get anything anymore?!?!?!
#my workplace is really leaning heavily ai#and people keep seeming to think that i too will use it#and i'm always just like 'NO!!!!!!!'#so far no one has pushed me on it and it's not required at all#but idk. is it going to stop being our call & become mandatory one day? D:#because (and i know this sounds so weird) morally i don't want to touch it!#this reminds me of one time when i was in acting class in college#and the prof was out so a TA was teaching#and we were playing a game where everyone had to repeat what everyone else had said and then add something on#and when it got to me i refused to do it because there were a bunch of swear words and i don't -- alas -- cannot -- swear#and i got in trouble with the TA and almost got kicked out of class lol#(but the other students stood up for me so i didn't!)#i get very rigid about things and i'm like 'sorry can't EVER do it!'#the swearing may be. ya know. completely morally neutral.#(though i still don't swear anything that can't be said on old timey network tv! because i'm weird!)#but i feel like i have way more of a case with this chat gpt stance#dollsome's deep thoughts#p.s. does this way of my brain operating suggest some profound neurodivergence?#i often wonder.#society told me swearing was bad when i was a kid and i've internalized it FOREVER.#i said 'shit' once when i was like 10 (in homage to a line delivery from mrs doubtfire!)#and then i cried inconsolably for like two hours and never swore again#(this was totally internally enforced btw. i don't have any memory of any adults ever caring whatsoever.)#even to this very day i wouldn't even swear alone.#does my brain work like that of merricat from we have always lived in the castle? maybe a little.#these tags have gone a lot of places#the point is. i think it's okay to be anti-chat gpt for moral reasons. and also coolness reasons.#and swearing = fine obviously. but not my style.#unless i'm writing and then there's no rules obvi
