Audible and Amazon are a blight on the publishing and writing industry, to the point that Ursula K LeGuin, while she was still alive, actively and vehemently asked people to never purchase any of her books from Amazon.
PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. If you love books. If you love literature. If you love stories. If you love writers. If you love libraries. If you love authors. If you love the power of the written word, DIVORCE YOURSELF FROM AMAZON. No more kindle. No more Audible. No day-of shipped books from Amazon. There are other ways to get what you need without sacrificing yourself and everyone else, and especially the authors you love to, "The B.S. Machine," As LeGuin called it.
Utilize your library. For the love of whatever God or whatever Ideal you hold dear, Utilize Your Library.
How to Ditch Amazon
Support your local libraries and the small businesses that are actually making the products you want. Fuck Jeff Bezos and the systemic, universal worker abuse, gaslighting, and brutality they live off of.

yesterday I went to a little meeting at my local queer community center and I was admiring their bookshelves and mentioned that I work at the public library and someone said "well I bet they don't have any [LGBTQ+ books] at our library" and I was like um. yes we do. we have tons of them. half of our employees are queer leftists so they said "oh well I bet they don't in [nearby rural county]" and I was like uh once again yes they absolutely do. gay people live and work there as well
so here's a quick reminder that if you don't think your local library has enough queer centered materials you should actually check before assuming, and if you're not satisfied with their collection you should submit a request for more such books. I don't know what the political landscape of libraries looks like outside the us rn, but within the us no matter where you are, I promise you there are employees at your library fighting for inclusion and intellectual freedom and they can't win without vocal public support
#literally maddening thing to hear#we were fucking at pride this year#i know missouri is a hell hole but there are people working really fucking hard to make it better and we could use some support here#just fucking go to your local libraries website right now literally right this second#and look around#you may be shocked at the stuff you discover there

Good news!
Found a bobbin lace making book in my library catalogue, it's currently on loan but I've places a hold.
And in doing so I've found out I can actually get books from one library on hold to another.
I knew that my card was usable for all allerdale libraries but I didn't know that so that's really cool, instead of going into a town I don't go to on a regular basis and I can just walk to my towns one.

unsung benefit i think a lot of ppl are sleeping on with using the public library is that i think its a great replacement for the dopamine hit some ppl get from online shopping. it kind of fills that niche of reserving something that you then get to anticipate the arrival of and enjoy when it arrives, but without like, the waste and the money.

btw if you borrow dvds or cds from library you can rip them onto your own blanks or onto your hard drive or whatever. librarians don’t care and they won’t know if you do it or not
#not pjo#chitter chatter#library tag#when I was training as a page one librarian was showing us the music section#and was like people come in and take out a bunch of cds and rip them onto their phones and return them the next day#it’s materials moving in and out baby that’s all that matters#get yourself a library card#(not all libraries have a music and dvd/bluray section but it’s worth checking!)#(and get a library card even if you don’t use it)#(but check out your local library to see what they do offer bc there’s lots of programs and other things too)#(not every public library is perfect but you can help influence it to make it the space you want)#100#1000

Leafed through what I think is one of the best Spanish translations of North and South, 30 dead, 79 injured.
#we rag so much about the status of the editorial industry and whatnot#but certain standards like “updating” a text to make it “more readable” for a contemporary audience#are a severe mistake#Your Victorian writer should sound Victorian!#Spanish authors in the 19th century were using ran on sentences and a wider vocabulary too!#btw forever tickled by the back cover of Alba's edition of Mr Harrison's Confessions#(the only Gaskell book at the uni library for unfathomable reasons)#quoting Dickens' Scheherezade comment to Gaskell#because it immediately reminds me of “if I was Mr. G I'd beat her”#That would make a great back cover quote too :P#In a less jokey note I think back covers of Cranford should include Rushkin's comments#both the “I don't know why you stopped going on would have allowed you to kill more characters”#and the “I threw the book across the room when Captain Brown died and my mom had to insist several times that I read on”#North and South should have as back cover quote Dickens saying he wished Gaskell's characters stood more firm upon their feet#(meaning that they died less and less often)

You don’t even have to go! You can get an electronic library card and use it to download things with Libby and Kanopy! Depending on where you live, you may even have access to OTHER libraries besides your local. (All three of the major public library systems in New York City will issue electronic cards to anyone who lives, works, or goes to school anywhere in New York State, for instance.)
I think it’s time for us to all collectively return to the library. Get a card, go to a club meeting, volunteer on an off day, rent some equipment. You don’t even have to read a book. But since the digital world is rapidly becoming a subscription-only hellscape requiring a criminal amount of private personal information to use even CASUALLY, the library has become our last safe haven to just exist with information present and not have our labour or information exploited for money.

saw a twitter post the other day where someone lamented how they wish university libraries were public and, if you are in the US, most public libraries (if not all, but I only am very familiar with one out of many) can request books from libraries across the country AND world, including major universities. My local library is, in fact, connected to the largest university in the county.
I'm currently reading a design book from a library that is across the country from a university because it's relatively academic and niche. If you can, take an hour to just dig through your local library website, or even better, call them!
Support your local libraries! It's free :)

you know, i can handle a little bit of fun "Nandor is dumb" talk, but i have a net-zero tolerance for any implication that Nandor is not educated.
Nandor would have been incredibly educated in his lifetime.
even (or especially) as a soldier in the Islamic World. being a soldier was more like getting sent to boarding school that's also a military camp. they weren't just concerned with creating loyal fodder for war. they were building the next government officials, generals, accountants, advisors, etc. it was important that young men knew how to read, write, speak multiple languages, learn philosophy...sometimes even studying art and music was mandatory.
if he was nobility (and its most likely he was), take all that shit and multiply it exponentially. Nandor would have been reading Plato at the same age most people are still potty training. he would have been specifically groomed in such a way to not be just a brilliant strategist and warrior, but also diplomate and ambassador of literally the center of scientific and cultural excellence of the age.
so like yeah, he can be a big dummy sometimes, sure. but that bitch is probably more educated than any of us will ever be.
#wwdits#nandor the relentless#Nandor#what we do in the shadows#i think its obvious by how much Nandor loves to read that he grew up educated#it's one of my favorite character traits of his#anyways#this was just your local psa abt the depth of Nandor's character and intelligence#and how the medieval islamic world was like - so much more advanced than it's western counterpart it's hilarious how ppl mischaracterize it#(by hilarious i mean it makes me want to break something)#this was in my drafts lolol what did i read that made me vent this? idk#also 'islamic world' is just a term some historians use to describe a specific geographical location and historical age#kind of how 'western world' is used today#it doesn't mean it's specific to one religion or nation but the broader time and location#meaning that Al Qolindar or Persia or Ilkhanate or w/e you want to call where Nandor came from#the same expectations of education and it's vibrant social/cultural world remain an accurate image of the middle east in the medieval age#if you come from the west like me#think The Forum + The Library of Alexandria + Paris/Florence + and idk anything else u think of when u think of 'Western Excellence'#and then imagine of all of that in one place at one time and then u might get close to what the world Nandor was living in as a human

I am 🌟 COLLECTING 🌟 library cards
Reminder that the Libby App (library app - has books, audio, graphic novels) let's you add multiple libraries, you just need your card number and pin, and when you search for materials will search all of the data bases you have access to! Making the chances of you getting the book (and quickly for example if one library has a wait-list for the book, another might not) much better!!!
Don't buy books from Audible/Amazon when you can use free public resources even if you can't leave your house! You can even apply for library cards online without going in and usually get a 30 day grace period before having to go in with a license/id for a permanent library card 💖💖💖
