Since joining forces in late 2016, Chicago rappers Quentin Branch and Brian Warren have become more lyrically pointed and sonically experimental with each new release. Their 2017 debut Ok! sounds positively poppy despite the self-lacerating lyrics. By 2019 on the EP Talkshit!, the music is darker, drawing from Detroit techno and industrial music as much as underground acts like Clipping and Dälek. On their latest album, The Legend of ABM, the pair combine ferocious dexterity and radical truth-telling with the coruscating sonic architecture of producer Formants. As Andrew Forell noted in his recent review, “Rapping from within the belly of a diseased beast, the pair rely on human rhythms that dodge and weave the noise of the city ricocheting around them.”

A lot of Dick’s novels inspired some of the writing for The Legend of ABM, especially the themes that deal with existential struggles with technology, authoritarian governments, paranoia, and consumerism. A lot of those core themes are explored in his book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Wu-Tang Clan — Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)

One of the most influential albums in music history. This album taught us how to channel some of the most traumatic aspects of being Black in America with humor and charisma while being accessible to people unfamiliar with said aspects.

Charles Bukowski — Women and Factotum

Most of his poems came from the perspective of the dying working class: working while pursuing art, alcoholism, suicide, and the American dream. His books, most notably Women and Factotum heavily influenced the writing on this album.

Public Enemy — Fear of a Black Planet

This group is very significant to us. The way they infused political messages critiquing American racism and the media have had a profound effect on our own music. One project that has had a huge influence on our style is Fear of a Black Planet.

Paul Thomas Anderson — There Will Be Blood

2007 American classic directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film explores the dark side of capitalism and the American dream in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Similar themes are exposed in The Legend of ABM.

The duo perfected the art of juggling themes of self-inflicted struggles and interpersonal relationships. They also helped me with my approach towards some of the writing process on The Legend Of ABM, especially the album Stankonia.

Kendrick Lamar — Damn

This project taught me the art of balancing the flaws within oneself and keeping a level head in a crazy world.

Safdie Brothers — Uncut Gems

A movie directed by the Safdie bros with its unique and unsettling camera speed and turbulent atmosphere gave me the inspiration to rap as chaotic as the feeling you get when watching this film.

Earl Sweatshirt — Some Rap Songs

An artist that has a profound Influence on my lyrical content as well as my approach to the artistry. His ability to step out of the box while pushing his artistic integrity to new levels is unmatched.

Coen Brothers — No Country for Old Men

A huge theme that stuck out to me was the passing of time and generational change. I wanted to make lyrics that made the listener feel as uncomfortable as Anton Chigur's cold but calculated nihilism.

“I’m gonna go to the restroom,” you whisper to Arthur, as his older brother, Lorenzo is telling a story at the dinner table.  Arthur nods his head, letting your hand go, he looks back and smiles at you before returning his attention to Lorenzo.  His smile has your heart melting, Arthur and his pearly whites.  

After you left the table, Charles silently followed after you.  He caught up to you in a back hallway to the restrooms.  Wrapping his hand around your arm, to stop you, it set your skin a blaze.  “I know you,” Charles said with a bit of a glare.  

“Yeah, we just met tonight at dinner…” 

“No, I know you from before tonight,” Charles corrected his earlier statement.  

“I don’t know what you’re talking about I have never seen you before tonight,” you said, trying to convince yourself that you were wrong and Charles isn’t the one you slept with.  

“You’re the girl from that night, the one that was in my bed.” 

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” you don’t know if you’re trying to convince Charles that he's wrong or if you’re trying to convince yourself anymore.    

“Don’t lie, I haven’t forgotten that night,” Charles says softer this time, his tone gentler now.  It would be a lie to say that your heart didn’t skip a beat with how Charles talked.  

“I don’t want to remember that night,” you say this time, trying to push the memories from that night away from your mind.  Charles took a step closer to you, when someone was coming down the hall to use the restroom.  His cologne surrounded you, you couldn’t describe what he smelled like but it caused your mind to go fuzzy.  You felt overwhelmed with his presence.  

You watched Charles' gaze flicker between your eyes and your lips, “I don’t want to remember that night either,” Charles says clearly dazed.  Charles moves his other hand to cup your face, you want to have the strength to stop him.  But Charles makes your heart flutter, and your brian go hazy.  There’s something about being in his presence, being so physically close to him, that makes you forget about everything else.  

“I should…” you take a deep breath, but it doesn’t help because all you can smell is Charles’ cologne.  “Arthur,” you whisper, you’re trying to say you should go back to Arthur, but you don’t get all the words out.  

The mention of his brother has Charles halting.  “You should go back to the table,” Charles says, letting you go and taking a step back.   You nod your head, before walking away.  Charles doesn’t know what came over him.  He hasn’t stopped thinking about that night.  For the past three months you have invaded all his dreams, for three months Charles couldn’t get you out of his head.  For three months he wondered, what your name was, what you did like, how you looked before the morning after, who your boyfriend was.  For three months Charles has only thought about you.  

Charles remembers that night so clearly, he remembers what started that night even.  Him and Charlotte got into an argument about something unimportant, so Charles went out in an attempt to forget about it.  There at the club with a few friends, he spotted you.  You were dancing, and drinking with what looked to be a few girlfriends.  The sight of you sent shivers down Charles' spine.  He came over to dance with you, and you allowed him to.  The feeling of your body against his sent shocks through his system.  Your perfume caused his brain to fog up.  Something about you had Charles in a trance.  

When Charles finally returns to the table, you both pretend nothing happened.  You take Arthur’s hand in yours and you smile lovingly at Arthur.  You notice Charles takes his girlfriend, Charlotte’s hand, and kisses the back of it.  You and him look at each other, you don’t know what passes through his mind, but thoughts of that night pass through your mind.  Suppressed memories of Charles hovering over you, filling you.  His hands on your body, his lips on yours, his body pressed against yours, all those memories fill your mind.  You turn back to look at Arthur, trying to stop the heat crawling over your body.  

After you break the gaze, Charles looks down to his lap, having to adjust his pants.  He knew he was fucked when one glance from you did this to him.  You knew you were fucked, when at the end of the night when Arthur placed a kiss on your lips, your mind still play thoughts of Charles.

“Come on, it’s gonna be fun,” Arthur says, as he drags you along.  Charles is taking the yacht out today, and Arthur insisted on you coming along, even though you already told him that you would prefer to stay at home.  Against your wishes, Arthur drags you along nonetheless. 

Charles picks you and Arthur up from the dock, before moving onto the yacht.  When you finally get aboard, Charles and Arthur don’t waste any time, immediately jumping into the water.  When they come back aboard, you feel your heart pound, as water drips from Charles’ bare chest. 

“Someone like what they see?” Charlotte asks from behind you, as she holds out towels for the boys.  

“Huh?” you pull your gaze away from Charles to look at his girlfriend.  

“Arthur, you like what you see,” Charlotte says pointing to Arthur who was standing behind Charles.  

“Yeah, of course,” you say, as the guilt begins to eat away at you. Charles looks at you and he knows you weren’t looking at Arthur.  You grab a towel from Charlotte, walking past Charles to hand it to Arthur.  “How does the water feel?” You ask Arthur.  

“Nice, refreshing,” Arthur says with a flashy smirk, grabbing the towel from you.  

“You girls should take a dip,” Charles says, you feel his gaze on you, his voice sends goosebumps down your skin.  

“Maybe I will,” you say in a hushed voice, Arthur thinks you’re talking to him, but you know you’re talking to Charles.  

“Oh? I should join you,” Arthur says with a playful smirk, as he sets down the towel.  You pull off your shirt, and you step out of your shorts to jump into the water.  You still feel Charles gaze on you, you feel him stare at you.  

“They look good together, yeah?” Charlotte asks Charles, as she hugs his arm, watching you and Arthur jump into the water.  

“Yeah,” Charles mumbles, not hearing what Charlotte says, too focused on you.

That night so many drinks are shared that no one really makes it back to shore.  Charlotte is tucked away in Charles’ room, while Arthur is passed out in another room that Charles set aside for him.  Any other friends that Charles had invited out for the day, are already fast asleep.  There's only you and Charles left up, nursing your drinks.  You sit far away enough from him, that his scent doesn’t surround you.  

“Does he know?” Charles asks, breaking the silence first.  

“He knows, he doesn’t know it was you.”  You don’t need the context to answer the question, you already know what Charles is referring to.  

“What did you tell him?” 

“That it was a terrible mistake, that I don’t remember who the guy was, that I would never do it again,” you answer truthfully.  There’s no one around, there’s no reason to lie anymore.  “Does she know?” 

Charles takes a sip of the beer in his hand.  You can see the debate go on in his mind, he takes a second before answering, “no.” 

“I should go to bed,” you stand up from your seat, placing your drink down on the table.  Charles matches your movement standing up with you.  You watch Charles, make his way towards you, closing the distance you put between the both of you.  He wasted no time, cupping your face and grabbing your waist pulling you in close.  You feel his lips brush against yours, not a full kiss, “don’t,” you whisper, closing your eyes.  “Don’t do something we’re gonna both regret,” you get the words out this time. 

“I want to,” Charles whispers, “I want to kiss you, even when I know I shouldn’t.”  You don’t dare to open your eyes to look at Charles, afraid that as soon as you open them, you’re gonna succumb to your desires.  “Look at me,” Charles whispers, noticing that you’re not looking at him.  Against your better judgment, you obey.  You open your eyes and look at Charles.  

You do it.  You push yourself slightly higher, pressing your lips against Charles’.  It's almost instant with how he responds, pulling you closer, holding on to you tighter.  You wish you stopped at a kiss.  You wished you stopped after you fell back into the seat.  You wish you stopped when he moved to your neck.  You wish you stopped when he moved down to your chest.  You wish you stopped when he continued to move down your body.  You don’t stop him.

“We can’t do this Charles, Arthur is asleep,” you whisper.

“You had my baby,” Charles answers honestly.  You place a hand on your stomach, you feel your eyes well with tears.  You’re in too deep and you know it.  

“y/n,” Arthur’s voice cuts clean across the room, your heart drops, “who are you on the phone with?” 

You pull the phone away from your ear, hanging up the call before anyone can say anything else, “it was my mom, she pressed the wrong button.”  You lie so easily to Arthur, you have gotten good at hiding things now.  

“Okay,” Arthur says, deep down he feels like you’re lying to him, but he just thinks he’s being insecure.  

“Let’s go to bed,” you say with a soft smile, turning off your phone.

You shut Charles out completely.  You block his number, you block him all on social media platforms.  Anytime Arthur invites you out with his family, you fake an illness.  You do a marvelous job of avoiding Charles completely.  So much of a marvelous job, that Charles forces you to see him.  You don’t know how he does it but he shows up at your front door demanding to see you.  You couldn’t help yourself but open the door to him.

You make sure it’s the last time you ever see Charles.  That very same day, after Charles leaves your place, you break up with Arthur.  You tell Arthur the truth, the easy truth.  That you fell out of love with him, that your heart doesn’t feel the same anymore.  That you’re sorry and ashamed that your feelings changed so drastically.  

Arthur doesn’t even know if he wants the answer, but he asks anyway, “were you cheating on me?” 

You think about your answer carefully, you think about what your answer would mean.  What it would do, how it would affect everyone, what was the best thing to say.  You take the time to answer Arthur’s question, you think very carefully before answering.  “I was, you don’t know him, he’s someone from back home.” 

“What was it about him that I didn’t have?” Arthur asks, again he doesn’t know if he wants the answer but he still asks.  

You have to think carefully again, Arthur and Charles are similar in so many ways.  There's so many things that they shared, “nothing,” you finally answer.  “He wasn’t better than you, my heart just chose him.”  

“Are you gonna be with him now?” 

The answer comes fast this time around, “no, he has a girlfriend.”  

“What are you gonna do now?” Arthur asks, this time he knows he wants the answer.  

This time you don’t have to carefully word your answer, “I’m gonna go back home, I think i’ve been away too long.”  

Arthur nods his head, he stands up to leave.  It feels weird, almost unsatisfying.  You thought Arthur was gonna yell, shout, cry, but he didn’t do any such things.  Before he makes it out of the door, he turns back and says, “I hope you find someone who makes you feel like how that guy made you feel.”  Arthur then shuts the door behind him, in that moment you caught a glimpse of Charles in Arthur.  You leave Monaco within the week, you try not to think about it.  

However even when you get back home, thousands of miles away from Charles, you can still feel his lips on your skin.  You can still feel his hands grip your waist.  You can still feel the shocks he sent through your system.  You can still feel the blaze he set to your body.  Even thousands miles away, your body still longs for him.

My apologies if you've already answered this somewhere, but do we know what Charles Hartnell did for a living/what his life was like after losing his older brothers?

Hi there!

Charles Hartnell trained at Chatham Dockyard for several years and ended up becoming a shipwright like his father, grandfather, great-grandfather etc. At one point, in the 1881 census, he was a lead shipwright at the yard.

He married Hannah Owen in 1852 when he was 24 years old and had five children with her, including his son Thomas (!!) who worked as a steam engine draftsman at Chatham. In the census records, it shows that all of his children were educated (listed as 'scholars') and one of his daughters became a schoolteacher. I've heard that Charles seemed to prize education and was insistent on his children being literate and making something of themselves.

As to what his life was like after his brothers' deaths, it's hard to say. I do know he wrote quite a few letters to the Admiralty which are currently held by his family and not available to the public. The letter declaring John's death and debt was delivered to him personally, and Thomas' Arctic service medal was also delivered to him. He seemed to be the most insistent on preserving their memory, as his descendant Donald Bray was the one who provided the "may we be spared to meet on earth" letter to researchers and his other descendant Brian Spenceley was the one who served as photographer to his great-great uncle's exhumation and provided a painting of Charles as an adult.

I do wish we knew more about him and his thoughts and feelings about his brothers. All we currently have are a few comments from his now-famous letter (which includes a phonetic spelling of his Kentish dialect!):

Dear Brothers  This comes with my kind love to you hoping it find you both in good health as thank god it leaves me at present. It is nearly three years since we parted but I hope it will not be that time before we meet again. There has [written as 'their as’!] been great changes taken place since then. [...] But if I tell you all the news now I shall have none to tell you when you come home which I hope will not be long as three long years have nearly passed away[.] [...] I wish you a prosperous passage to return safe home as no more at present from Your Affectionate Brother Charles Hartnell

Day 11. AU 

Stardew Valley AU

This one has been on my mind for ages and while my life is violently beating me down and I have no energy or time to write an actual fic, I wanted to share this one nevertheless.

There are endless possibilities how this could go, but these are the two I've had.

1. Charles as the farmer.

Kurt had taken the charge of Brian Xavier's company when he had died, turning it into a souless corporation, where Charles now works, but has no real power over. He is sick of Kurt's treatment of him and all the pretencious people who try to get close to him just to gain something. The frustration of the situation and the backstab world of business world makes him seek for an out. He finds  out that there is a farm that his grandfather had left for Brian and which had then been passed to him. So, he decides to leave the company and head towards Stardew Valley (Genosha Valley? Maybe not X'D)

The farm is in shambles, but Charles is not too defeated and starts to fix everything up slowly but surely. He meets the people who live in the town and most of them are happy to welcome him to the Valley and are encouraging of his efforts to start his farm. But when Charles meets Erik, the local blacksmith, when he brings most of his tools for a fixing, the other man is not too impressed. He fixes the tools, it's his job after all, but doesn't think that Charles, a rich city boy, will last even to the end of the year.

Well, Charles is ready to prove Erik wrong and works twice as hard as he had before. The beginning is rough, he knows next to nothing about agriculture, but he is if nothing else but stubborn and slowly learns and succeeds to turn the farm back to it's former glory. And maybe he also develops feelings towards Erik along the way. And the blacksmith also learns that there was more to Charles than he thought in the beginning.

2. Erik as the farmer

Erik is working for Shaw with minimum wage and it's slowly sucking his life out of him. He hates everything about his work, his coworkers, his boss and his current life. After one late night at work he finds a letter from his mother who passed away years ago. It tells him about a farm that belonged to her grandparents and his mother had planned to move there too, but her health made it impossible. But maybe Erik could find a nice life there. Erik hadn't payed too much attention to the farm mentioned in his mother's will, but now... It sounds just what he needs. So with a huge middlefinger, he leaves Shaw's company and heads to the farm.

It's in a bad condition, but Erik is ready to work hard for it and this time, the work feels actually meaningfull and at the end of the day he doesn't feel like he is slowly suffocating. The townspeople are pleasant too, if a bit nosy. Especially Charles, the teacher of the town, who lives in a trailer with his step brother. But as Eriks first crops grow, so do his feelings for the other man as they spend more and more time together. And suddenly Erik notices how he has become a part of the community.

Nevertheless who is the farmer, the end conflict would be:

The valley life is good and Charles/Erik has found a community there, where people care about each other and are like a one big family. Everything is fine, until Kurt's/Shaw's company arrives to the valley and threathens to change everything for the worse (capitalism, you know). Charles/Erik has to face the life they had left behind to save their newfound family. But this time, they don't have to do it alone.

And there is so much ability to customise this AU!

- Which x-men character is which stardew valley character (Even Erik and Charles don't have to be the ones I chose here. Erik could also be a struggling writer living in a cabin on the beach or a shopkeeper who is having a rivarly with Kurt's megamart. Charles in turn could also be a researcher, living with his sister's family near the mountains or a doctor, who has to patch Erik back together after a monster attack in the mines.)

- If you want a kid fic, you can make either Erik or Charles or both single fathers and have all or some of their kids there too.

- Could be an AU with or without powers. I usually prefer powered AUs myself so that's what I was thinking while planning this. But not a necessity.

- Would most likely end up as quite a fluffy fic, but there is also room for hurt/comfort for example.

Cherik Ashes of Love AU:

Charles is the sweet, innocent grape fairy whose mother is actually the deceased Flower God. When his mother gave birth to him, she gave him a medicine that made him unable to fall in love.

Erik is the Crown Prince of the Heavens.

En Sabah Nur is Erik's half brother and rival.

Sebastian Shaw is Erik's father, the Heavenly God who was once infatuated with Charles' mother (Sharon) but ended up marrying Emma Frost.

Charles meets Erik, who crashes into his garden by accident. Erik obviously falls in love with this cute fairy and wants to propose, even though he knows his mother won't approve of him marrying a small fairy.

En Sabah Nur also meets Charles and he *wants* Charles too, flirting and everything.

While these two brothers flirt with Charles, though, Charles is neutral with both of them and never shows preference or like towards one or the other. In fact, Charles is so innocent and naive he has no idea those two are flirting with him. (This is, ofc, because of the medicine his mother gave him. He can't feel love.)

Charles' bestie, Raven (a snake fairy) brings him to the Heavens and they accidentally meet Shaw and Emma.

Shaw and Emma are stunned because Charles looks 99% like his dead mother, and Shaw is *convinced* that Charles is his and Sharon's son. He's so kind to Charles and dotes on him.

Emma isn't pleased. Emma finds out Erik is in love with Charles.

She tells him Charles is, most likely, his half brother, because y'know, Shaw couldn't keep it in his pants. Erik is devastated and says goodbye to Charles, because they can never be together.

Meanwhile, En Sabah Nur has taken a different approach and he's getting close with Charles' guardian (Hank McCoy), and he finds out that no, Charles isn't Shaw's son, his father is Brian Xavier. He's elated, of course, and doesn't tell Erik.

Meanwhile, Emma, who hates Sharon (because Shaw was soo in love with Sharon at that time) also hates Charles and wants to get rid of him.

Anyway, blablabla Erik finds out Charles isn't his brother and he's ecstatic and continues to pursue Charles, and Charles starts to feel *something* towards Erik, but is it love?? Charles has no idea.. (the effects of the medicine are pretty strong, but Charles' feelings for Erik are growing day by day...)

Blablabla relationship develops, ESN is a third wheel, Shaw is creepy as fuck, and one day Charles' mentor/guardian, Hank McCoy, dies.

Charles mistakenly thinks it's Erik who killed Hank, (this is ESN scheming in the background). Charles swears revenge.

So when ESN proposes marriage, Emma and Shaw agree to the marriage, and Charles doesn't object.

Erik is furious, he's had this rivalry with ESN for years, cuz ESN wants to be the Crown Prince and is jealous of Erik.. and now ESN is taking Charles, his Charles. Erik is pissed and plans to stop the wedding.

A few days before the wedding Erik visits Charles and asks him, like, do you truly want to marry ESN? Charles says no, I am in love with you. Erik is overjoyed and promises to stop the wedding.

Wedding day arrives, Erik leads his soldiers to invade the palace and stop the wedding, he and ESN are fighting head to head, and then!!! Dramatic music... Charles stabs Erik. In the chest.

Charles is crying and his chest hurts and he just stabs Erik even deeper and Erik is crying and asking why? And ESN is laughing on the sidelines. Shaw and Emma are stunned.

Charles says "I've never loved you, Erik," and Erik collapses, he's dying. And then Charles collapses too and his heart hurts so much and he has no idea why. He's avenged Hank, he's done the right thing, right? So why does his chest hurt so much?

Charles' love for Erik is practically overflowing, and plus the stress of everything that's happened Charles just starts coughing and he coughs up that medicine his mom gives him, and he passes out.

When he wakes up ESN tells him Erik is dead, and without the medicine Charles is feelings things he never felt before, his heart hurts so much and he needs Erik to hug him and--

Charles just has a breakdown. He's never had feelings before and suddenly it all comes crashing down on him and he doesn't understand a thing.

He's hysterical, almost insane and manic. Meanwhile, ESN realizes he's had feelings (real feelings) for Charles all this time and he tries to make Charles calm down and just stay with him. Too bad Charles is just, he feels broken.

Meanwhile Emma and Shaw have a big fight, and ESN kills Shaw and imprisons Emma in an isolated tower.

Why does he hate Emma? Cuz Emma killed his birth mother a long time ago. In fact, Emma also killed Erik's birth mother, Eddie, but Emma and Eddie used to be best friends, so after Eddie died, Emma took care of Erik as if he was her own son.

Meanwhile Erik isn't dead. He managed to survive somehow, and he's heartbroken. He swears revenge on Charles and ESN.

It's been 18 years since Spring Awakening first opened on Broadway and 15 years since the original production closed. I decided to do some digging on what everyone who performed in that production is doing these days.

Part 1 covers the original cast, while part 2 will cover replacements.

Jonathan Groff Melchior

Went on to several prominent roles on TV shows like Glee, movies like Frozen, and musicals like Hamilton (pictured.) He is currently in Merrily We Roll Along on Broadway.

Lea Michele Wendla

Notably starred in the TV show Glee and has released several albums. She was recently seen in Funny Girl on Broadway (pictured.)

John Gallagher, Jr. Moritz

Went on to star in several other Broadway shows including American Idiot. He has released an album under the name Johnny Gallagher. Recently appeared in Swept Away (pictured), a musical based on the music of The Avett Brothers.

Lauren Pritchard Ilse

Has a music career under the name LOLO and was notably featured on the Panic! At the Disco song "Miss Jackson" in 2013.

Jonathan B Wright Hanschen

Had a few acting credits on TV shows like Gossip Girl (pictured), now seems to be pursuing voice over work.

Gideon Glick Ernst

Has appeared in several other Broadway shows and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for his role in To Kill a Mockingbird in 2019 (pictured.) Some recent credits include the movie Maestro and a recurring role on the TV show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Skylar Astin Georg

Has had a variety of screen roles with musical elements, like the movie Pitch Perfect and the TV shows Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Zoey's Extraordinatory Playlist. He currently stars in the TV show So Help Me Todd (pictured.)

Brian Charles Johnson Otto (u/s Moritz)

Appeared on Broadway again in the ensemble of American Idiot (pictured.) Was recently on tour singing backup for Allen Stone.

Has been in several other Broadway shows including SpongeBob SquarePants and Tootsie (pictured) for which she and was nominated for a Best Featured Actress in a Musical Tony in 2019. She most recently provided voice acting for the TV series Hazbin Hotel.

Has appeared in several off-Broadway shows, most notably Freckleface Strawberry The Musical (pictured.) Now owns a professional tutoring company in New York called Andersen Education.

Went on to join the 1st national tour of Spring Awakening as Hanschen. Has since appeared in several other Broadway shows and the national tour of Fun Home (pictured.) He is also writing his own musicals. Siluetas, for which he wrote music and lyrics, will be premiering at Power Street Theatre in Philadelphia this summer.

Gerard Canonico Moritz (replacement), Ensemble (u/s Moritz, Hanschen, Ernst, Otto, Georg)

Was in the show until it closed, by which time he was playing Moritz. Has appeared in many other Broadway and off-Broadway shows including Groundhog Day and Be More Chill (pictured), and is currently on Broadway in Almost Famous.

Notes: Fantastic video of Colin's Orpheus Debut! there is a small head obstruction in the far left bottom that obstructs nothing but Hermes legs at times. This was a very unique and stressful show for the cast as they were down a worker and had everyone in the company on in the show. the show started almost 25 minutes late as they had to rehearse and change choreo. The lights hit in wait for me and the choreo change is quite fun to see and it's unique!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Paul Badura-Skoda, singer-songwriter Bruce Barr, composer-guitarist Glenn Branca, William Butler (Arcade Fire), Roseanne Cash’s 2009 album THE LIST, Le Corbusier, Kevin Cronin, Britt Ekland, my cousin Daniel Ertel, The Fisk Jubilee Singers (1871), Ioan Gruffudd, Fannie Lou Hamer, Thor Heyerdahl, David Hidalgo (Los Lobos), the 1929 film THE JAZZ SINGER (the first major “talkie”), Mylon LeFevre, “Swedish Nightingale” Jenny Lind (she filled concert halls before microphones were invented), Carole Lombard, Thomas McClary (Commodores), The Monkees 1969 appearance on the LAUGH-IN TV show, Meg Myers, producer Jim Pierson, Shostakovich’s 6th Iron Quartet (1956), Fay Spain, Millie Small, Matthew Sweet, Karol Szymanowski, George Westinghouse, and the 1965 single by The Supremes, “I Hear a Symphony.” The song is a romantic idyll for the wonders of a lover, and it was the 6th #1 hit single for The Supremes. It was composed by the incomparable Motown Records songwriting team of Brian Holland, his brother Eddie, and Lamont Dozier. They’d been writing since they were teenagers and wrote hits for The 4 Tops, Marvin Gaye, Martha Reeves, and others. Dozier said, “We were keeping up not only with what was going on at Motown, but in the world, meaning The Beatles, The Beach Boys…There was definitely a standard…Everything that came out had a signature as well as it had to sound like a hit.” Dozier said they’d regularly go to chamber, opera, and symphony concerts “for song concepts.” Baroque, electronic, ethnic, and orchestral influences became part of “the Motown sound.”

“I Hear a Symphony” was a turning point. Early Motown hits like “Money” and “Please Mr. Postman” were rooted in r’n’b, rock’n’roll, and gospel, and they sold mostly to teens, but Motown President Berry Gordy envisioned a broader audience. Ray Charles had already merged “strings with soul,” but his audience was older. The Beach Boys, Phil Spector, The Beatles, and other British Invasion pop acts cherry-picked ideas from musicals, classical, and the avant-garde (perhaps prophesying the “progressive rock era” when Keith Emerson would do Bartok, Bernstein, and boogie-woogie in one flash). By comparison, Motown was even more pro-active about marrying classical, jazz, and pop/rock to “soul music.” Motown arrangers (Paul Riser, etc.), were inspired by Broadway and the jazz orchestrations of Duke Ellington and George Gershwin. They hired musicians from the Detroit Symphony to connect elegance with The Funk Brothers, the Motown house band. “I Hear a Symphony” features the muscular drumming of Benny Benjamin and the distinctive baritone sax solo of Mike Terry.
