humphrey: literally anything that isn't his name. err maybe henry, francis - not francis, actually - thomas - no, not that either, they'd never hear the end of it - william? charles? george - oh no definitely not that - richard, maybe? none of those? well, that's all the boy's names that were popular in his time, so... margaret and mary are probably a bit old-fashioned, maybe elizabeth? failing that there's anne or - well, maybe not katherine. sophie's quite a nice modern name, now that he thinks about it, but maybe not that either... don't mind him, he's rambling

kitty: fluttershy, of course! or destiny. and maybe george for a boy. (there are a lot of suggestions of george from the ghosts. they weren't thinking of fanny, honest.)

thomas: isabelle. or alison, since she is so radiant that a child deserves to be blessed with her grace. and absolutely not francis, under any circumstances. but definitely isabelle. really, isabelle is a must. she should pick isabelle.

fanny: absolutely none of that modern nonsense! alison should pick a good, old-fashioned name, like ethel or archibald.

the captain: richard? adam? anthony? (alison thinks these are genuinely innocent suggestions.) otherwise, elizabeth, for a girl, after the late queen, and charles for a boy

The fascination with busts of Hamilton

After @essentialaegis pointed this out in the notes of this post, I started to look back and realize there were quite a few times people had some alluring interest or comments towards busts of Hamilton. These particular recollections being from Elizabeth Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson, and none other than Aaron Burr.

I remember nothing more distinctly than a sofa and chairs with spindle tracting legs, upholstered in black broadcloth, embroidered in flowery wreaths by Mrs. [Elizabeth] Hamilton herself, and a marble bust of [Alexander] Hamilton standing on its pedestal in a draped corner. That bust I can never forget, for centuries the old lady always paused before it in her tour of the rooms, and, leaning on her cane, gazed and gazed, as if she could never be satisfied.

After gazing a moment at these objects, the eye settled with a deeper interest on busts of [Thomas] Jefferson and [Alexander] Hamilton, by Ceracchi, placed on massive pedestals on each side of the main entrance—“opposed in death as in life,” as the surviving original sometimes remarked, with a pensive smile, as he observed the notice they attracted.

Soon after his return Burr visited Boston. Phillips called on him at the Tremont Hotel, and offered to act the part of a cicerone. Among other places they went to the Athenæum, then on Pearl Street, to see the pictures and look at the library. As they walked down the hall, between the alcoves, Phillips caught sight of a bust of Hamilton, one of the ornaments of the library, which he had forgotten was there. He tried on some pretext to draw Burr in another direction; but he, too, had seen the bust and marched straight up to it. He stood facing it for a moment, then turned and said: “A remarkable man—a very remarkable man.” Upon this he wheeled on both heels in military style and moved on again with great composure.

Take an anecdote in point. Mr. John Ant—n, a brother lawyer, had a bust of Hamilton in his office, and, from a trick or habit, A., when in earnest thought or talk, would fix his eye upon the bust. Burr had a consultation with him; and A., unconsciously, fixed his eye upon the pale Hamilton; but, instantly remembering, withdrew his sight from it, still not before Burr divined his thoughts. The Colonel quietly, slowly poked out his long fingers, pointed to the bust very deliberately, and said: “He may thank me—I made him a great man.”

He had occasion to pay some attentions to Aaron Burr during a visit Burr made to Boston after the death of Hamilton. He took him to the Athenæum, and while walking through the sculpture gallery, seeing the bust of Hamilton near him, turned off, naturally thinking it would be disagreeable to Burr to be brought before it. But Burr went directly up to it and said in a very loud tone, ‘Ah! Here is Hamilton.’ And, pressing his finger along certain lines of his face said, ‘There was the poetry!’

Arguably the most beloved busts of Hamilton has been coined as Giuseppe Ceracchi's iconic one. When Ceracchi took a trip to the US in 1791-92, he proposed a monument in honor of the Revolution and appealed to Congress to finance the project. Ceracchi had attempted to raise the funds for the memorial, and Jefferson endorsed him and told Robert Livingston that he was; “a very celebrated sculptor from Rome.” [x] He began sculpting models of the founding fathers, including others like Washington and Jefferson. In July 1792, Ceracchi wrote to Hamilton that he was; “impatient to receive the clay that I had the satisfaction of forming from your witty and significant physiognomy”. [x] When Ceracchi heard the memorial proposal was rejected by Congress on May 7th, 1792, he sent the completed busts to each of his models in 1794. Hilariously, he also sent them each a bill for the work which they didn't ask for. Though while Washington tried to return the bust rather than pay that outrageously for a marbel copy of his face, Hamilton shamelessly paid $620; “for this sum through delicacy paid upon cherachi's draft for making my bust on his own importunity & as a favour to him.” [x]

The Roman stylized bust paints Hamilton like an ancient senator, with a slash of the Order of Cincinnatus over his bare chest—Likely referring to the Society of the Cincinnati, which you can read more about here and here. The original is inscribed on the back in Latin; “DE FACIE PHILADELPHIAE EX ECTIPO FLORENCIAE FACIEBAT JOS. CERACCHI CIDDCCLXXXXIV” Which translates; “Executed in Philadelphia and copied in Florence, Executed by Joseph Ceracchi, 1794.” [x]

The Hamilton family kept the bust until 1896 when they donated it to the New York Public Library, there is also a copy on display at the Grange. This bust would be utilized as a common reference for Hamilton's appearance posthumously, as Trumbull used the bust as model for a series of 1804-1808 portraits of Hamilton, that would later be used for reference on the ten dollar bill. [x] And the first US Postal Service stamp to honor Hamilton was an 1870 30-cent stamp using this bust as a model. [x] Also in 1880 while the bust was owned by Hamilton's son, John Church Hamilton, he lended it so it could be used as a model for the head of the granite statue of Hamilton by Carl Conrads. [x]

In The Unknown Terror, a millionaire (John Howard) leads a remote jungle expedition to find the legendary “Cave of the Dead” where his wife’s (Mala Powers) brother had disappeared long ago. Instead, they stumble upon a mad doctor who has created a horde of foam-spewing, fungus-covered monster-men. In The Colossus of New York, when a brilliant scientist (Ross Martin) is accidentally killed, his preserved brain is transferred to the body of a giant robot so that it can continue to serve mankind. But when it gains awareness of its own hideousness, this steel colossus embarks on a rampage of destruction. In Destination Inner Space, when an object of unknown origin is detected in the area of an underwater laboratory, scientists investigate and come face to face with the object—an extraterrestrial saucer! They board the craft and discover a mysterious cylinder, which they take back to the lab for closer inspection. It is then that events take a monstrous turn!

(Francis I) appears to have met Anne de Pisseleu d’Heilly on his return to France in 1526, and, soon afterwards, she was acknowledged as his favourite mistress. Her rise to political actor, however, did not begin until about 1538–1539, and she becomes a central figure in 1540–1541, when ambassadors to France, charged with keeping their lords up to date on François I’s attitude toward Henry VIII and Charles V, began to solicit her alongside other highly ranked contacts. Etampes’s credit only grew throughout the final years of the king’s life: in 1542 papal nuncio Dandino reports that the king was “completely in the thrall of Madame d’Étampes...”. By 1545, imperial ambassador St. Mauris complains to Charles V that Protestants at the French court were receiving great favour because Madame d’Étampes “inclines to the Lutheran discipline.” In October 1546, Étampes was still attempting to mediate an agreement between the English and the king, convinced that François I would break with the pope if Henry VIII would make the first move. Throughout her tenure, she performed her role as lady-in-waiting to Queen Eleanor of Austria with irreproachable deference.

Anne’s political influence and her role in influencing the king during the 1540s are no longer in doubt. Her relations with the king’s close advisers Anne de Montmorency (1493–1567), Philippe Chabot de Brion (1492–1543), Claude  Annebault (1495–1552), and François de Tournon (1489–1562) were pivotal in the last decade of the king’s reign...The Imperial ambassador in 1541 reported that no councillor dared approach the king about anything without checking first with Madame d’Étampes if she approved it. The following year, though the king was with the army in Languedoc, dispatches from the front in Flanders were forwarded to her at Lyons. Her intervention in the appointment of Jean du Bellay as Archbishop of Bordeaux in 1544 was widely commented on at the time. In this period she employed the standard political tactics of a Renaissance politician: the placement of friends and allies at court, many drawn from her extensive kindred on her father’s side and from the relatives of her mother, the Sanguins. Her status is reflected by her inclusion — as the only non-royal woman — in a series of fifty or so woodcuts created by Hans Liefrinck the elder at Antwerp, which included the most powerful dynastic figures of the day."

this might be kinda niche and i have absolutely nothing to back it up but i’ve been thinking about it and i thought it was interesting. in Sink or Swim, Adam says that his middle name is Charles. we also know that Leo’s is Francis which i love but that’s not relevant to the headcanon. i personally believe that the kids middle names keep the ABC pattern, just in a different order. Adam’s middle name starts with a C, therefore Bree’s middle name starts with an A and Chase’s with a B. again there is absolutely nothing to back this up but i think it’s fun.

so Adam’s middle name is Charles as we know, and i think that Chase’s middle name is Beckett and Bree’s is Alanna.

i just like the way they sound. other names i considered were Bowie and Adeline. PLEASE COMMENT OTHER IDEAS IM SO ENTHRALLED IN THIS

Dear President Biden,

We are heartened by Friday’s release of the two American hostages, Judith Ranaan and her daughter Natalie Ranaan and by today’s release of two Israelis, Nurit Cooper and Yocheved Lifshitz, whose husbands remain in captivity.

But our relief is tempered by our overwhelming concern that 220 innocent people, including 30 children, remain captive by terrorists, threatened with torture and death. They were taken by Hamas in the savage massacre of October 7, where over 1,400 Israelis were slaughtered - women raped, families burned alive, and infants beheaded. 

Thank you for your unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people, who have been terrorized by Hamas since the group’s founding over 35 years ago, and for the Palestinians, who have also been terrorized, oppressed, and victimized by Hamas for the last 17 years that the group has been governing Gaza.

We all want the same thing: Freedom for Israelis and Palestinians to live side by side in peace. Freedom from the brutal violence spread by Hamas. And most urgently, in this moment, freedom for the hostages. 

We urge everyone to not rest until all hostages are released. No hostage can be left behind. Whether American, Argentinian, Australian, Azerbaijani, Brazilian, British, Canadian, Chilean, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Eritrean, Filipino, French, German, Indian, Israeli, Italian, Kazakh, Mexican, Panamanian, Paraguayan, Peruvian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, South African, Spanish, Sri Lankan, Thai, Ukrainian, Uzbekistani or otherwise, we need to bring them home.

Natural history as the basis for trade and commercial agriculture mediated the link between overseas expansion and the development of European scientific thought. By virtue of its strategic location in the moist tropics, Peninsular Malaysia made a significant contribution to natural history and, thus, to colonial science. [...] Botanical and zoological collections from insular Southeast Asia were of seminal importance, for example, to the pioneer studies of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace. [...]

The search for economic produce was actively promoted by both the English and Dutch East India Companies [...]. Modern European plant science had its roots in [...] the creation of physick and, later, botanic gardens, established [...] in Pisa, Padua, Florence, [...] Leiden, Oxford, Cambridge, [...] and Edinburgh. Among other functions, these gardens served, as institutions for training physicians for service in the colonies. The lead role they played in discovering and inventorying plants [...] forged a crucial link between botanic gardens and the quest for products, territory and empire.

Garcia D’Orta (c. 1501/2-68), a Spanish physician who served several viceroys in Goa, established the botanic garden near Bombay [...]. His Aromatum Historia (1563) [...] has been described as ‘a landmark in the history of civilization’. [...]

Hendrik van Rheede’s ground-breaking 12-volume Hortus Malabaricus (1678-1703) [was] based on [...] Ayurvadic knowledge and the services of Ezhava collectors and tree climbers in the Malabar. [...]

[T]he connection [Linnaeus] established between natural history and national wealth was widely influential. It struck a cord with Adam Smith (1723-90) and other political economists [...] who placed their faith in agricultural improvement [...]. These developments put a premium on naturalists and [...] Sir Comte de Buffon [...] and Joseph Banks [...] served as agricultural and medical consultants to sovereigns. [...] [T]he concept of environmental determinism informed Adam Smith’s philosophy of the superiority of Western nations, endowed with temperate climes, over the people of the tropics. [...] The person who brokered the link between desire for material wealth and the search for its location and procurement overseas was the indomitable and widely influential [Joseph] Banks, President of the Royal Society (1778-1820) and, from 1773, de facto director of the Royal Botanical Gardens. Also a member of the Privy Council Committee for trade – the organization most directly concerned with augmenting wealth and self-sufficiency -- he used his influence with the Royal Institution and the Board of Agriculture to forge a successful link between science and empire. Carolus Clusius who held the Chair of Botany in Leiden (1592-9) reputedly obtained ‘Malaysian’ specimens from Sir Francis Drake.

Again, following the death in 1695 of the VOC [Dutch East India Company] botanist, Paulus Hermann, his notes and manuscript [...] were acquired and used by William Sherard (Sherwood), founder of the Chair of Botany in Oxford.

In 1778, the English East India Company (EIC) appointed J.G. Koenig, a pupil of Linnaeus, as ‘Professor of Botany and Natural History’ in Madras. [...]

His appointment, believed to have been initiated by Banks, firmly established colonial science within the purview of imperial economic policy. [...]

Koenig worked in the private gardens [...] in Melaka and conducted the earliest and largest botanical survey of the west coast of the Peninsula (1778-9). Bengkulen (Bangkulu), [...] where pepper cultivation was extensively researched, was declared a Presidency [...] with the express aim of developing its full economic potential. To help fulfill this objective, Philip and Charles Miller, sons of the well-respected gardener at the Chelsea Physick Garden, were engaged as botanists [...] Charles Miller was entrusted in ‘the greatest secrecy’ with the experimental planting of nutmeg and cloves, using seedlings that visiting Bugis traders were encouraged to smuggle from Maluku. [...] [T]he EIC envisaged expanding the range of Benkulen’s exports by the introduction of tea, ginger, turmeric and mulberries. [...] These efforts prefigured experiments in spice cultivation at the Calcutta Botanic Gardens [...].

Newbold took his knowledge of the tropical environment in the [Malayan] Straits Settlements to Madras, where he earned a reputation as a naturalist and an Orientalist [...]. His lecture to the Bengal Asiatic Society in 1846 [...] was hugely influential and put the Peninsula at the heart of the emerging discourse on tropical ecology. [...] [T]hose [tropical botanic gardens] established by the EIC in Penang (1794) and Singapore (1822) were integral to its commercial aims for extending the chain of ‘tropical Edens’. As centres for the [...] assemblage of exotic crops [...], botanic gardens were perceived as symbols of scientific progress and imperial might.

¿Que se puede añadir a la felicidad de un hombre que tiene buena salud, no tiene deudas y cuenta con la conciencia limpia?

Adam Smith

Fue un economista y filósofo escocés, nacido en Kirkcaldy en junio de 1723, considerado uno de los mayores exponentes de la economía clásica y de la filosofía de la economía.

Fue el único hijo del segundo matrimonio de Adam Smith oficial de aduanas y Margaret Douglas.

Poco se sabe de su infancia a excepción de que fue raptado por una banda de gitanos a la edad de 4 años y fue rescatado por su tío.

A la edad de 14 años, Smith ingresó a la Universidad de Glasgow en donde fue influenciado por el famoso profesor de filosofía moral Francis Hutcheson. Después de su graduación en 1740, obtuvo una beca para Oxford en donde estudió 6 años en el Balliol College.

De regreso a casa en 1748 a 1761 fue profesor ayudante de las cátedras de retórica y literatura en Edimburgo y fue durante esas fechas que estableció una estrecha amistad con el filósofo David Hume, quien influyó en muchas de sus teorías económicas y éticas de Smith.

A partir de 1751 Smith ocupó la cátedra de lógica y de filosofía moral cargo que ejerció durante 12 años.

Smith publicó su primera obra en 1759 bajo el título de “Teoría de los sentimientos morales” la cual era parte de la segunda parte de su curso y que le hizo ganar gran reputación.

En 1783, el aristócrata Charles TownShend, ofreció a Smith una pensión vitalicia a cambio de encargarse de la educación de su hijastro durante un viaje de tres años por Suiza y Francia. 

Durante este viaje conoció al economista francés Francois Quesnay y al cofundador de la escuela conocida como fisiocracia Ann Robert Jacques Turcot, los cuales servirían para que Smith pudiera construir su propia teoría, con diferencias respecto a la de estos autores.

También durante este viaje conoció a pensadores ilustrados como Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Diderot, al filósofo y enciclopedista francés D’alembert y al banquero Necker entre otros.

Al finalizar su viaje Smith regresó con su madre para dedicar la mayor parte de su tiempo a la elaboración de su obra “La riqueza de las naciones”, obra que intenta diferenciar la economía política de la ciencia política.

La riqueza de las naciones le llevó mas de 10 años escribirla y es por tal razón es que para algunos especialista Smith es considerado el padre de la economía política.

En 1779 viajó a Londres en donde fue duramente criticado por sus elogios a Hume y sus criticas a la religión.

A su regreso de Londres fue nombrado director de Aduana de Edimburgo en 1778, puesto que desempeñó hasta su muerte en 1790 a la edad de 67 años.

Do you think they'll ever build an Adams Memorial?

I always liked John Adams, he seemed more down to earth than most founding fathers and didn't own any slaves. It's a shame he doesn't have a memorial.

Congress has actually authorized and reauthorized the formation of a commission to build an Adams memorial in Washington, D.C. several times over the past 20 years, but plans keep stalling. I agree that John Adams definitely deserves a monument. I really like the idea of a potential Adams Memorial not only honoring John Adams, but also Abigail Adams, John Quincy Adams, Louisa Adams (and, to a lesser extent, Henry Adams and Charles Francis Adams). The two Adams Presidents and their First Ladies were important figures in the founding and early decades of our nation's history. They are worthy of being memorialized with prominent monuments in Washington. Hopefully the ideas for an Adams monument find their way out of development hell and get on the right track.
