every article and headline i've seen about this so far has been about the cruelty of hamas (unsurprisingly) but even in an article absolutely dripping with israel apologia they still had to admit that israel didn't give a fuck about these hostages until they became easier to propagandize

“Delphos” dress, Mariano Fortuny, early 20th century
Metropolitan Museum of Art C.I.46.9.82, Gift of Miss Irene Lewisohn and Mrs. Alice Lewisohn Crowley
Fortuny’s Delphos gowns were made by sewing a rectangular shift dress and then shrinking it through pleats, which were heat-set using a special process patented by Fortuny and unknown today. These pleats can be kept in near-perfect condition simply by rolling up the dress for storage, even today. Glass beads were always sewn to the hem to weigh it down and help it to follow the natural lines of the wearer’s body - she was not supposed to wear a corset under it. As the dress was designed in the 1910s, when corsets were still commonly worn with day- and evening-wear, the original long-sleeved version was worn only as a tea-gown in the privacy of one’s own home. During the 1920s, as the fashionable body was meant to be free of corsetry, it became acceptable to wear in formal situations.

Robe de style, Jeanne Lanvin, 1922; silk, metal, glass
Metropolitan Museum of Art C.I.62.8.5, Gift of Mrs. Stephen C. Clark
The robe de style was invented by the French designer Jeanne Lanvin, though other couture houses produced their own versions. It was characterized by the wide, full skirt, held out with a hoop skirt or two side-hoops in imitation of the gowns of the mid-eighteenth century. This version has a bodice with very little shaping, but some were more fitted. The front of the skirt is open over an attached petticoat, with a geometric beaded pattern on either side of the opening. Both of these features recall eighteenth century fashion as well.

Mantua, British, late 17th century; wool, gilt silver
Metropolitan Museum of Art 33.54a,b; Rogers Fund
An earlier incarnation of this mantua was featured in the early 20th century in both Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion I and Nora Waugh’s Cut of Women’s Clothes - however, in the 1970s it was restored to its original appearance. (This is documented in an issue of the Met’s magazine.) In the early 18th century, it had been remodeled to be more fashionable. The restoration removed the stomacher, increased the size of the robings, and closed them over the front. This would have been worn as court dress during the winter.

what's with ppl who insist on calling David Attenborough or Terry Pratchet "Sir"? like since when did we give a shit about knighthoods lol?
I get that it's a very juvenile like "i get to emphasise that this guy is cool" thing but it's soooooo embarrassing lol.
"SIR David Attenborough, put some respect on his name" I'm putting respect on him by calling him his name, stop sounding like a monarchist lol

how badly do you need to fuck up a kingdom (laos) that one of your princes joins the communist party and then gets declared president of the communist republic that overthrew your kingdom? that seems like a bit of a failure to keep your heirs in line.
having three princes who supported communism, neutralism and monarchism respectively in objectively funny though, Pokémon starters type shit.
