Yes, and the truth of these donations and how they're handled is complex. Some merchants hand over your money. Annual drives for certain groups (think United Way et al) are of this type.
Others, however, put all the money raised into a big pile, add enough to make it to their previously announced pledge, and take all the credit (and tax deductions).
For example, a corp might pledge $2 million to a prominent charity. Then they raise as much of that $2 million as possible from employees and customers and only add their own money when it's time to cut the check for $2 million.
How can you be sure your money is going to a group that doesn't discriminate, or works with groups you would never have wanted to fund? Or one that uses 50% of you money for admin and fundraising costs? Bottom line - research your own charities and give money directly to them. I wrote a bunch about this in my blog Why I Don't Buy Pink Ribbon Products Anymore.
I fucking hate grocery store checkout screens asking me if I want to donate $20 to end child hunger. You're a $10 billion corporation. I'm using a coupon to get 50 cents off a bag of potatoes. Why don't YOU donate $20 to end child hunger?

"Settlement" housing surveys and dominates the landscape, West Bank, Palestine
THE ARCHITECTURE OF VIOLENCE (2014)
It feels like an important time to revisit this short documentary. Part of the Rebel Architecture series, the film examines, clearly and concisely, the use of design as a weapon of intimidation and subjugation within the Palestine Israel conflict. One element it focuses on is Palestine's 'architecture of occupation': the way the built environment, even in the form of suburban 'settlement' housing (in which tracts of Israeli homes have been built in occupied territories like the West Bank), has been deliberately shaped to intimidate, surveil, segregate, and even dehumanise.
"Settlements are built on hilltops, overlooking Palestinian valleys, to dominate. They're laid out to create a suburban-scale optical device that can survey the territory. The bright red roofs of the houses are mandated by law... to allow military to understand what's friend and foe: where to bomb and where not to."
"...When you put Israeli colonies on highways, you accelerate Israeli movement through the space. In the same way, with every twist and turn of terrain, Palestinians encounter a checkpoint, a border, a fence, a valley they cannot cross..."
It's important for architects and urban designers everywhere to understand that our craft has the potential to be weaponised. It's important that, no matter whom the client, we think about how a project will impact everyone whose life it touches. But sadly, as essential as these considerations are, they're of no immediate help to civilians from both sides who are suffering in Gaza and the rest of Palestine and Israel right now. So, it seems worth sharing:
Some ways that we can help:
1. Speak up. Send an email to your elected representative. Sign petitions. Stand up in any forum you can against human rights violations, and against both islamaphobic and antisemitic behaviour.
2. Contribute to a trusted aid organisation working in Gaza, such as Unicef or the British Red Cross. Sites like charitynavigator and charitychecker can be used to check it's a group who'll use it well.
3. Understand the context. Short videos here and here provide a clear introduction/overview.
4. Boycott companies that are directly profiting from the illegal occupation, and from human rights violations.

Have seen very little discussion on this website about the situation in Haiti and figured maybe I’d try to start the conversation?
For those who aren’t aware, Haiti is the only country that led a successful slave rebellion which led to the establishment of an independent country, and a day hasn’t passed where they haven’t been punished for it. The country never had a chance to flourish as the west made sure to suck it economically dry and then dip when nothing was left.
This has left the country horrifically unstable in every way possible. However, the last few years, it has been on the brink of collapse due to absolutely no political leadership and as of now, Haiti has completely collapsed. The country is mostly run by gangs all competing for power. There is no where for refugees to escape. The west has completely abandoned any meaningful intervention and it has mostly been South American, Middle Eastern, and African countries who only seem interested in trying to bring peace. But since 2024 has begun, it is a terrifying place to be full of completely innocent people being screwed over by the west for standing up for themselves.
Of course, this is heavily over simplified and I have no personal connection to Haiti. So under the cut, I’m adding much more accurate and insightful information, as well as fundraisers, books, petitions, and Haitian run businesses and social media accounts. As someone who is studying history, it doesn’t take long to realize most nations struggling today have been victimized for wanting autonomy and freedom. From Palestine to Sudan, to DRC to Ukraine, there is so much preventable tragedy. As someone from a country who has historically inflicted these conditions on a lot of these nations, it’s frustrating to feel powerless to the injustice. I truly find the only thing that puts my mind at peace is education and spreading awareness. Don’t let their suffering be in vain.

Hello! I’m interested in donating to charities regarding the conservation of endangered animals. What charities do you recommend, which ones do you not, and how do I go about spotting the bad from the good? Sorry if thats too many questions! Thanks!
This is a great question and something I definitely think about a lot! My cousin worked in the law department for a big non-profit and told me that many of them do not allocate funds the way you’d expect. She recommended Givewell and CharityNavigator to vet charities and make sure your money will go to good use. They don’t have every cause but are helpful especially for larger charities.
The only conservation charity I have consistently donated to over the years has been the World Wildlife Fund. Beyond that, I like to find smaller projects that are more personal to me to donate. For example, I’ve donated to the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow fund to support efforts to save the critically endangered bird, and the Archbold Research Station to preserve declining scrub ecosystems that are home to gopher tortoises and other threatened animal species. If you can find a project that is in your community I think it’s great to support something close to home!

If you’re like me and don’t have the time and/or energy to fact check all the Gaza fundraisers going around and don’t trust some random tumblr users to vet them for you, here are some lists of organizations that support Palestinians:
CharityWatch has a list from Oct 10th 2023, I was unable to find a more recent list, but you can check for updated status on each organization
From TheNewHumanitarian:
“The report is part of the SCORE series, which are perceptions surveys that try to groundtruth reach and effectiveness by interviewing people who use aid (in this case, 810 people in Gaza by phone in February).
Gaza’s biggest aid provider, UNRWA, is “by far the most present and effective”, respondents said. Others mentioned include: the Ministry of Social Development, the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, the World Food Programme, UNICEF, the UAE’s Red Crescent, ICRC, the Palestinian NGO MA’AN, celeb chef José Andrés’s World Central Kitchen, the development organisation Global Communities, and MSF. Also: Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan are playing prominent roles in aid, interviewees said.”
[this paragraph is here with hyperlinks I added because the article didn’t have them ): ]
ImpactfulNinja I wasn’t sure about this site but several of its recommendations are on the other sites as well, so it’s probably good, though there isn’t an exact post date
CharityNavigator names several support for Israel groups at the start but has Gaza/Palestine groups after them
HumanRightsCareers one more, just to top it off
The only Palestine related thing I’m against is spam in my inbox. I ain’t got time nor energy to vet the shit ton of campaigns I get sent, not do I trust the random ass tumblrina guy over there to vet them for me, and I report spam as spam, cause deleting doesn’t decrease the amount I get, fucking deal with it
And I don’t support Hamas pr other antisemitic groups or individuals, “from the river to the sea” was coined by Hamas and is about killing all Jews, stop using it unless you’re an antisemite, I ain’t arguing with you shits

I know you all wanna help, but make sure your donations are actually going to their intended recipients. I've been contacted by and researched plenty of randomly sent claims that money donations will directly help a family in Gaza and found out a majority of these are fake accounts trying to pass themselves off as vetted GFMs by employing similar usernames or hijacking vetted lists.
CharityNavigator is useful, as well as organizations like UNFPA, ICRC, and Oxfam.
Unfortunately people will try to benefit and scam others in times of crisis so it's kind of important to know where your money is going and if it's actually helping people who need it the most.
#◈ ooc#I was able to make some smaller donations before surgery happened but I honestly have not been receiving ANY unemployment from my job at al#i literally do not have money rn

Do you or any followers maybe know if savingwildcats.org.uk (the organisation mentioned in the article about scottish wildcats that you linked to a while ago) is a legit one? I've checked charitynavigator but it's not on there.
Are you sure that was me and not @felinefractious? I couldn't find anything like that in my posts, but it is mentioned in one of theirs:
Anyway, no, sorry, unfortunately i'm not very knowledgeable about wildlife conversation. Can anyone else here help?

Was feeling powerless today and went looking for charities actually doing something to help long-term in addition to immediate humanitarian aid. I found ALLMEP, Alliance for Middle East Peace, a coalition of NGOs that promotes people-to-people cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians to change attitudes and build peace. CharityNavigator rated it at 80%, three stars out of four (“If this organization aligns with your passions and values, you can give with confidence.”)

Hi 👋, My name is Mohammad, and I’m reaching out in a moment of desperate need. I’m a father of three young children living in Gaza, and we are caught in the midst of a catastrophic war. Our home is no longer a safe haven, and the future here seems increasingly uncertain. 💔
I’ve launched a fundraising campaign with the goal of raising $40,000 to relocate my family to a safer place where my children can grow up in peace and have a chance at a brighter future. 🕊️🇵🇸
Unfortunately, my previous fundraising efforts were abruptly halted when my account was terminated without explanation. However, I remain determined to keep fighting for my family’s safety and well-being. 🫶
If you could take a moment to read our story, consider donating, or simply share our campaign with others, it would make an incredible difference. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to safety and a new beginning. 🙏
Thank you for your time, compassion, and support. ❤

🍉This is an extremely suspicious way to advertise your GFM. 🍉
I have chosen to only donate to vetted charities to avoid the horrible people pretending to be in the conflict to get quick cash.
The following link is from the Federal Trade Commission on how to safely donate in response to this crisis. https://consumer.ftc.gov/consumer-alerts/2023/10/safely-donating-response-israel-gaza-crisis They specifically say:
Be cautious about giving to individuals on crowdfunding sites. Some scammers pretend to be concerned citizens collecting for a cause, but their true intentions are to pocket your money rather than give it to the cause. Giving to someone you personally know and trust is safest. Review the platform’s policies and procedures. Some crowdfunding sites will check out postings asking for help after a humanitarian crisis to confirm they’re legit. Others don’t.
Some things to look for when you are considering a GFM to donate to:
🍉People outside of 19 specific countries cannot set up GFMs on their own. Someone in one of those countries has to set up the GFM and then transfer the money over.
🍉The organizer and beneficiary should know each other in some way. (GFM checks this allegedly)
🍉Are people related to the beneficiary or organizer donating and leaving words of support?
🍉Does the GFM say how the money will be transferred to the family?
🍉The full names of all the beneficiaries and how they are related to each other, The name and city of the bank the beneficiary will use to receive the money (or digital way to transfer).
🍉What the money is specifically for (i.e. crossing the border, finding accommodation, acquiring legal visas, etc.)
🍉The beneficiary's social media accounts. The organizer's social media accounts. Pay special attention to when these accounts were created. There is a small chance that families created accounts after the conflict started.
GFM can check names against the list of known bad people, we can't. So, we have to search out social medias to prove that these people are who they say they are.
It is safer to donate to vetted and legitimate charities.
Below is a link to charities, which can be found at charitynavigator DOT org if Tumblr eats the link.
I sincerely hope all who are affected by the crisis receive the help they need. I extra sincerely hope the scammers taking advantage of people's kindness get afflicted with lice.
#it really sucks to be unable to just trust people#scammers are the worst#this is the 8th suspicious GFM to crawl onto my social media this week#it's only wednesday

10 DMV Charities to Donate to This Holiday Season!
The season of giving is upon us, and the options for choosing which charitable organizations you will donate to are practically limitless. November and December are the busiest times of the year for philanthropic giving, often motivated by fundraisers’ requests for bequests on Giving Tuesday (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and Black Friday) and the tax breaks for those who itemize their deductions.
If you’re feeling benevolent but bombarded, here are some ways to whittle down your end-of-year giving options, along with a list of 10 great and reputable charities in the DMV region.
First, list your passions.
Animals? Children? Homelessness? Church? The arts? A political cause? Everyone has certain causes that spark their emotions. Use this list to search out the nonprofits that support them. You can choose from our list below, or use our list as a starting point for your own list.
Next, vet your choices.
Several online sites deliver quantitative and qualitative evaluations of charities. Here are four of the most popular.
CharityWatch reports on the legitimacy of nonprofits and issues ratings on an “A+” to “F” scale, priding themselves as “America’s most independent, assertive charity watchdog.”
GuideStar offers an easy search to match your specific social conscience with like-missioned charities and then provide you with data to make an informed decision.
CharityNavigator is another research tool you can use to find charities that align with your values. They use data from the IRS and the charities themselves to rate each organization.
Give.org is the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance addresses four areas of charity accountability: governance, results reporting, finances, and truthful transparent communications. It also offers a “Scam Tracker” that you can access and file a complaint if you feel you should.
Here are just 10 of the many charities in the DMV that are worthy of your attention. These organizations earned four-star (highest) Charity Navigator ratings.
