tablet charging port broke. Fuck. Here’s what I got done for studying some concepts for a design on Alastor Alevtina
Tumblr media
this was mostly to play with faces, I wanted to give her big doe eyes so I played around with their shape a bit, and while I think I made them too big the shape is exactly what I want moving forward. I’ve done deer monsters before, though they’ve been based on stags not doe’s. I think I might create the human concepts for the casts designs first then move onto full demon designs, it might be easier to distort their forms that way.

I have an idea for a Guilty Gear character again, but this time it's a Rival Character for Sin Kiske. The idea is, basically, make a reverse Sin as far as a design standpoint goes. Not inverted, but reverse his formula. Looking at Sin, he kind of feels like his foundational idea was Sol-As-Ky. Not in practice, since that's a shallow way to describe his nuances, but in base terms. A character who looks related to both of them, but was shaped by one more.
So, reversing them would be something like Ky-As-Sol. Looking at them shallowly, Ky is (was) a human prodigy child soldier who fought in the Crusades. He has (had) a black and white view of the world and sought justice (Justice) through that lens. Sol, when you simplify him down to a bunch of circles connected by strings, is a gruff bounty hunter with a dark past. He doesn't like to try hard, he's largely apathetic to the world, but when he exerts effort it is for a good reason.
So, a Rival Character following the stuff I laid out would be a gruff child soldier with a prodigal level of magical skill who doesn't enjoy trying hard. Although he's fairly apathetic to the world and to justice, he can be convinced to exert effort for strong reasons.
Since I like to age characters around Sin's physical age, then the Rival would probably be Australian to fit the child soldier thing. That's an area that could probably canonically erupt into conflict frequently, or have an elongated Holy War due to distance. Probably a red-and-black colored character to contrast Sin's blue-and-white.
I'm interested in this idea a bit. In order to be a human rival, I think he'd have to fight pretty dirty. I'm thinking maybe he'd throw a landmine at Sin's head or something.

Dina and Tano from the Shamer Chronicles
At it again with those childhood favourites, so here's another one!
For those who don't know the story follows a matriarchal family with the gift to look anyone in the eye and see their memories of guilt and shame. These women are usually used as judges, but as Dina comes into her powers, war breaks out across the continent and her family's right to determine truth is shattered.
Been wanting to draw these two since... since I started drawing, really. And this was a really fun character design exercise! Going to try and see if I can draw some of my favourite scenes !!

When you create characters, how do you usually go about it? I can understand the first few phases, such as mapping them out, but I would like to know more about some artist processes and you seemed like the best place to start.
By the way, have I told you you look absolutely ✨stunning✨ this fine time of day/night?
when it comes to making characters, most of the time the visual idea is already in my mind as is the character's personality,,, often times i get inspiration from the songs i listen to so the 'personality' so to speak of the song might reflect in that character! (for example, octavia's current design was heavily inspired by '100%' by angelspit, so she kind of has a personality that would reflect the singer if that makes sense?) when it comes to the design itself, i like to chose 1-2 themes or motifs that i think relate well to the character (such as needles and pins with their cobweb motifs, or velvet's 'double x' motif) and a color pallete that will give the 'vibe' i want for them! (such as royal blue for regal characters - for me it's pretty standard color language stuffs) i like to include symbolism relating to the character/anything that could foreshadow their furure role in the story as well >:] shape language is one of the most important parts of visual design for me as well - i choose one shape, occasionally two, that i think will relate to the character best! i also have to make sure the way the shape is applied doesn't contradict with the character's personality (such as why would a smart, prim and proper character have messy spiky hair or poking out bits in their silhouette?) then i apply that shape everywhere i can!
for personality and character itself, i think of three things -
1. the character's role and presence in the story - will they be a major character, or just show up once or twice? are they an ally or an enemy to the protagonist? does that change? the way the character will/can develop should be explored if they're a major character. if your character dies as well, it's good to establish who they were as much as is needed before that happens (say, a dead mom can be portrayed as caring for the short time she's alive) - but it's interesting to leave them vague and mysterious, so you can really go either way!
2. the character's goals - what do they want? are they loyal to one person or a lone wolf? what will they do to get what they want? this can help to explore the character's morals and see if they'll change as the story continues!
3. secret third option - who is the character? do they have any strong likes or dislikes, hobbies, or anything that could 'contradict' with their visual design or outward personality? (such as octavia's love for creepy-cute mascots juxtaposing her violent profession and brutal personality!) technically this could be called humanisation but secret third option is funnier. it helps to explore what the character may not be comfortable with or vice versa because it can help to express the character to the audience without doing too much work.
thats basically it! sorry if this didn't make much sense or was too long ,,, this is just the way i personally go about characters so id recommend coming to others for advice! thank you!! :D

re-energized and ready to work on those sketches! the nap did wonders ♪(´▽`) still groggy, but i'm feeling better. coffee should be a good enough pick me up!
related: i've been thinking about it, and i may do a LITTLE altering for LWJ in IMBSB just for helping him look a bit different from COI LWJ since they're both "angel LWJ" lmao.
when i get around to doing a reference for COI LWJ i'll probably add onto it so i can have a slightly different one for IMBSB- it'd be fun to give him a fat loose braid i think, i like the art i've seen of him like that and i think it will be fitting ✨ i'm very attached to how i currently draw his hair though HAHA idk though don't hold me to anything, haha just considering options.
ALSO i am trying to get back into the writing groove after essentially tanking in production this week, but i will update you guys if i end up feeling like i will be late on this week's GOM chapter [See more GOM art here]. i really need to catch up with stuff so i may need to skip the update this week since 16 isn't even half done yet, but i will make sure to tell you guys if that is the case.
Thanks for reading if you got this far!

Decently aged wip of me working on a redesign for Alastor before my more recent reimagining concept, early on I only wanted to really alter some concepts with the character while attempting to keep things similar (the most notable change was making his animal a goat instead of a deer — people usually do that for Charlie, but my idea for Charlie and Lucifer has always been to use birds instead of goat imagery) and give him a larger swing and jazz inspiration, one of my notable inspirations was screamin’ Jay hawkins. He was also loosely based on the goat man of New Orleans. There’s a version of this sketch with goat eyes but I’m too lazy rn to grab it. Under cut is some info of my new concept
Ok so I’m order to keep some concepts of Alastor intact while still heavily remixing them, I made him a her. This kills two birds with one stone, as a female led show I think female characters being in the majority of the main cast helps, which will only help with me deciding to give nifty a more prominent role in the cast. My lady’s current name while I work out the details is Alevtina, and she was a famous musician in her life time who disappeared under mysterious circumstances which only heightened the level of her popularity post mortem. I decided to switch her sun with pentious’ in my last post so she is now largely represented by the envy sin. I couldn’t help myself with this I just love making evil women who you lowkey want to succeed in being downright atrocious, eventually I’ll reveal everything about her once I have sketched a few solid concepts with this version of the character, she’s likely going to be the one I focus on rn because I think she’d be the one I have the most reference pieces for (1930s fashion has a lot of results and catalog pictures I’ve found, including hair tutorials and different types of clothes depending on the occasion, that and I’ve saved so much freaky deer shit) and it’s a good chance to work on fem anatomy. After her the character I have the most for reference wise is nifty, I moved her to 1950s France so that I can keep some of the visuals aligned with her clothing, and there’s a lot to read on 1950s French womens wear. One thing I wanna do for each of the characters is solidify small things that they enjoyed in life that have an enhanced meaning after death outside of larger associations already center stage in their characterizations, so right now a lot of this is writing and collecting images and pieces of inspiration.
