“I feel like I have been seeing a lot of takes similar to this like "why are these two grown men fighting can they get over themselves and do something productive...rap game is dying out etc etc" I feel like I get where they are coming from in that both drake and kendrick lamar could be doing something productive like donating to funds for social justice causes. But I don't get why folks is saying hip hop and rap is dead. I'm just not sure what they mean by that. When folks say that do yall think they are speaking on the creator side or the fan side? I don't get it if it is the latter cuz I just started bumping mr morale and I like it a lot lol would not have thought to listen to it had it not been for all of this. I don't think it makes sense from the creator pov either cause didn't we just have hundreds of musicians put out their own versions of BBL Drizzy over the last couple of days?” - @nashira
This take from Questlove feels so…incredibly nihilistic.
Kendrick used his ability to call out a horrific individual in the music industry. Hip hop isn’t dead, in fact it has more meaning in directing power to folks.
Why does hip hop as a genre and culture have to die? When there are also other roots of the issue.
For example
youtube
Unsure if YouTube also censored this one by putting it under 18+ toggle but I hope not since it’s only the audio.
Our culture in hip hop has the power to give power from corporate to the people. Heck it has the power to unify and enlighten as the extra “noise” is not the focus. It’s the lyricism.
This is literally why I wrote songs and poetry. Why so many of my works have song inspirations. The time brings the delivery and flow of the words. But it’s the lyrics that bring finality and comfort.
“To ME... the point of music any genre is to put out something that is meaningful to you and something others can find meaning in. Also agree there are other roots to the issues we are facing rn with misogynoir and sexism in general, that doesn't start when a Black artist walks into the booth it starts in our homes. This whole "i get bitches u don't" one-up rappers put in every other song stems from black women as property in a sense. This is also why I feel uncomfortable when people single out rap as a misogynystic genre. It is definitely but when it's singled out I'm like hmm... hair metal??? Reggae???” - Nashira

"Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable", said the Mexican poet and academic, Cesar A. Cruz
And
“Poets, prophets and reformers are all picture-makers -- and this ability is the secret of their power and of their achievements. They see what ought to be by the reflection of what is, and endeavor to remove the contradiction.” - Frederick Douglass
These are what the arts, and in this context rap, feels to me.
Milo Rossi (Miniminuteman) made a good point about archaeology that also applies to any of the arts.
“The archaeology field needs differences of viewpoints and opinions so we can together seek the true facts and story of everything long lost. Therefore, upgrading the field of knowledge.”
Paraphrased of course from this video.
youtube
“The second-to-last-part of questlove's post makes sense to me, how blood will soon spill and then everybody gon be like rip drake 🙏🏽 or whatever but that comes from fans acting crazy that always seems to happen and my heart goes out to all victims, i hate to see musicians get killed over music.
Also I guess from some pov you could describe this whole moment we're having as mudslinging in a sense because it's a lot of rappers on the tl hopping on metros beat rapping about CSA because it's an easy rhyme. They put Millie in their songs like ammo. No substance behind it whatsoever.
Actually a lot of these BBL drizzy remixes perpetuate the same message we're clowning drake over.” - Nashira
I actually misinterpreted that part incorrectly and it felt nihilistic, but this is why it’s more brains than one. Because I actually didn’t realize it as it also falls on a creator standpoint.
You may not be able to control your audience, however you can make intent clear in every way you can. Wield that power wisely.
“Yeah agreed, I think you guys covered everything I was thinking but I think people who say usually the entire genre is dead aren't looking hard enough. Or in Questlove's case, he's probably jaded cause he literally is a rapper and producer on the more underground side so he definitely personally knows a gazillion other creators that are keeping the genre alive. But I think old heads tend to be like "everything the younger generation does is ruining this genre." - Jules
“There were a few episodes where boondocks briefly tackled rap beef and Huey talked about how it’s never long before someone gets hurt or gets shot bc of some stupid ish” - Phoenix

i don't normally reblog things like this but this is important.
you know when you read about a character that's gone through something traumatic and all they want is a hug or someone to talk to or a safe space to let it all out?
that's you. you're that character. you seek out the darkness to make sense of it. to push through to the light. to have some form of media hold your hand and tell you that you are not alone.
it's really easy to demonize content that someone enjoys and call it out for being "problematic" or "glorifying violence" or for having "too realistic" depictions of actual life events. it's much more difficult to see content that touches that darkness in you and sit with it.
this life is hard. some of us have had really shitty cards dealt to us and we have no choice but to sit with it. we have no choice but to seek out the darkness and embrace it. to know that it's the only place where all the pain could possibly make sense. and to consume media that comforts us only to hear about all the ways it's wrong has gotten fucking soul crushing.
if a piece of media makes you angry, good. if it makes you feel sad, good. if it makes you feel like no one should be watching it, good. it's reached something in you. for the love of fuck, reach back.
tl;dr: media is supposed to make you feel things. don't demonize creators or their fans for peeling back the curtain on all the pain that exists in this fucked up world
