simple skincare routine (+ product recommendations based of skin types)
hi angels! skincare has been a big passion of mine since i was around twelve and began to develop some hormonal skincare issues. these really made me insecure and i still struggle with my skin. but being consistent and developing my routine, working out my skin type, eating with my skin as a focus and trial and error has got me to a place where im much much happier with my skin - and id love to share some tips and products with you!! remember your skin is exposed to so much and such a delicate part of your body, treat it with the love and respect it deserves. ˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
firstly: figuring out your skin type
im not exaggerating when i say the basis of a good skincare routine is knowing your skin type. it makes it easier to buy products, work out what your skin needs and how to achieve the look you want.
dermatologists agree that there are four skin types:
oily (skin produces more oils and sebum).
dry (produces less oils and sebum).
normal (produces a normal amount of oils and sebum).
combination (areas of skin which are dry and areas that are sebum heavy/oily).
so…
how do you work out your skin type?
well there are two easy at home methods!
watch and wait (requires cleanser): wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. wait for half an hour or so and observe your skin. shiny all over = oily. tight and perhaps flaky = dry. shine in t zone = likely combination. hydrated and comfortable but not too oily = normal.
blotting sheet method (requires blotting sheets and cleanser): wash face with gentle cleanser, pat dry and waist for half an hour or so. press blotting sheets to chin, cheeks, forehead etc and examine the oil left on the sheets. lots of oil = oily. almost no oil/no oil = dry. oil mostly in t zone = combination. minimal all over face = normal.
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
secondly: building a routine
now youve worked out what skin type you have it’s time to build a routine! i personally have combination skin that verges more on the dry side.
my am and pm skincare routines look like this…
am: cleanser, ice face, oil face and do gentle gua sha routine, moisturiser and spf. applying facial sanitising spray regularly throughout the day.
pm: double cleanse, ice face (only if feeling puffy/sore), moisturiser, 1 - 2 spot treatments and sanitise face.
am products:
cerave hydrating cleanser.
corsx moisturiser (great for dry and spot prone skin, little goes along way).
la roche posay spf 50+.
jojoba face oil.
vital baby face spray.
pm products:
la roche posay effclar duo.
avene hydrance aqua cream.
two over the counter spot treatments.
you may need to cleanse your face more/less, use less moisturiser etc. developing your skin care routine is through trial and error, just be observant of your skin and take notes on any effects or changes a product seems to have.
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
thirdly: product recommendations
here’s a list of some product recommendations! some i have personally tried (they will be starred), others are popular ones based of your skin type loved by many.
cleansers
dry: cerave hydrating cleanser ⟡
oily: la roche posay effclar duo cleanser ⟡
combination: neutrogena skin balancing purifying gel cleanser
normal: paulas choice perfectly balanced foaming cleanser.
toner
dry: laneige cream skin toner
oily: body shop tea tree toner ⟡
combination: innisfree green tea toner
normal: la roche posay toner
moisturisers
dry: corsx moisturiser ⟡
oily: glow watermelon pink juice moisturiser
combination: byoma moisturising gel cream
normal: la roche posay cicaplast baume B5+ ⟡
spf
la roche posay spf 50+
black girl sunscreen
supergoop unseen sunscreen
˚₊‧꒰ა ♡ ໒꒱ ‧₊˚
thank you for reading angels! feel free to give any skincare product recommendations or reviews. im planning on doing an in-depth personal skincare routine post soon. hopefully you enjoyed!!
love, m.

How Beauty Sleep Boosts Your Skin's Health
In our fast-paced modern lives, prioritizing a good night's sleep can often be a challenge amidst various commitments. However, did you know that sleep is not just crucial for your overall health, but it also plays a significant role in the health and beauty of your skin? It's true! Getting enough quality sleep is like a secret weapon in your skincare routine, and overlooking it can lead to a myriad of skin issues. In this article, we'll explore the profound impact of sleep on skin health and reveal why catching those Zs is the ultimate recipe for a radiant complexion.
Cellular Repair and Regeneration:
When you curl up in bed and drift into dreamland, your body springs into action, embarking on a remarkable journey of cellular repair and rejuvenation. During the deep sleep stages, blood flow to your skin increases, nourishing skin cells with essential oxygen and nutrients. This process is vital for the renewal of skin tissue, collagen production, and maintaining a resilient skin barrier. Regrettably, skimping on sleep can disrupt this critical restoration process, leaving you with lackluster and fatigued-looking skin, and hastening the visible signs of aging.
Banishing Dark Circles and Puffy Eyes:
Have you ever woken up to find dark circles and puffy eyes staring back at you in the mirror? Sleep deprivation can cause blood vessels around the eyes to dilate, leading to the unwelcome appearance of dark circles. Additionally, fluid retention can create under-eye puffiness, making you appear tired and worn-out. Prioritizing ample sleep can significantly reduce these pesky under-eye concerns and brighten up your overall complexion.
EltaMD Renew Eye Gel is one of my favorite undereye brightener. It minimizes eyebags and dark circles, it also helps to reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
TULA Skin Care Eye Balm is another favorite of mine
A Calmer Complexion Through Stress Reduction:
Stress directly impacts our skin health. When stress levels soar, our body releases cortisol, a hormone that triggers inflammation. Persistent inflammation can worsen skin conditions like acne, eczema, and psoriasis, and can even expedite the aging process. On the flip side, sufficient sleep helps regulate cortisol levels, promoting a more balanced and serene complexion.
Ashwaganda such as ORGANIC INDIA Ashwagandha Herbal Supplement helps me a lot with stress reduction.
You can also start your night by taking a bath or shower with Dr Teal's Foaming Bath with Pure Epsom Salt or Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief followed by
Bath & Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief - Eucalyptus + Spearmint Body Lotion.
Unlocking Skincare Product Potency:
Your nightly skincare routine is undeniably important, but did you know that its effectiveness can be amplified by a well-rested state? During deep sleep, your skin becomes more permeable, allowing skincare products to penetrate more effectively. This means that your favorite serums and moisturizers can work their magic more efficiently when applied before bedtime.
My favorite nighttime serums and moisturizers include:
EltaMD PM Therapy Facial Moisturizer Lotion
CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion
Neutrogena Triple Age Repair Anti-Aging Night Cream
L'Oreal Paris Revitalift 0.3% Pure Retinol Night Serum
L'Oreal Paris Age Perfect Cell Renewal Midnight Serum
Conclusion:
The notion of "beauty sleep" is not a mere tale; it is an essential element for maintaining glowing and healthy skin. Prioritizing sufficient sleep is not just a gift to your overall well-being; it's a profound investment in your skin's health and beauty. The next time you find yourself compromising sleep for various obligations, remember the remarkable impact it has on your skin. Embrace the power of a good night's sleep, and you'll be rewarded with a complexion that radiates vitality and inner beauty. Sweet dreams!

My Routine for Doll Skin✨
i absolutely love having a thorough skincare routine. it makes me feel like a scientist, haha. i unfortunately have bad genetics when it comes to skin, so no amount of “drink water”, “cut out dairy and sugar”, or “manage what you eat” will ever help improve my skin. i simply need an effective routine, and here’s what works best for me.
the morning
in the mornings, i usually prep my skin for the day. this means i use products that protect my skin from the UV rays, pollution, makeup, and other nasty stuff that it’ll come in contact with.
cleansing: in the morning, i do not use a cleanser. i just rinse my face with warm water.
toner: i don’t use witch hazel or any other astringents; instead, i use toners that hydrate my skin instead of drying it out. i love the kikumasamune sake high moisture toner and the pyukang yul essence toner.
serums: during the day i need serums that will adequately prepare my skin for makeup. because i’m oily, i use the ordinary’s niacinamide + zinc serum since it is great at oil control. i also have a 1% salicylic acid serum that helps with oil control as well as lightly exfoliates my skin, making it smooth and clearing my pores so my makeup has a great base. if i have recently had any acne, i use either a vitamin c serum or an alpha arbutin serum to clear up any dark spots. for those, i like the ordinary and the inkey list.
moisturizer: finally, to lock in everything i put on my face i like to use a moisturizer. even if i have oily skin, i use a moisturizer or else i’m just drying out my skin. i use light creams or gels. my favorites are the ordinary’s natural moisturizing factors, the primera watery cream, and the iunik centella gel cream.
spf: every morning, my skincare routine ends with me putting on sunscreen. when using chemical exfoliation, it’s pertinent that you use an spf afterwards because if not then it undoes all your hard work; however, even when you aren’t using chemical exfoliants you always need to wear spf because sun damage makes your skin tone uneven and you obviously don’t want skin cancer. yes, even if you are darkskinned, when you’re inside if you have sun coming in through your windows, during the winter, when it’s raining. it’s also important to use spf 30 or above and be sure to reapply every two hours. for the initial application, my favorite sunscreen is the purito green level if i’m not going to be in the sun all day. for reapplication over my makeup, i use the supergoop spf spray.
at night
my skincare routine for the nighttime is focused on barrier repair and hydration. this is when i use products like chemical exfoliants because using them makes the skin more sensitive to harmful uv rays from the sun. i like to layer hydration here in order to balance out my morning routine which isn’t very hydrating.
oil cleansing: i make sure to double cleanse by using an oil cleanser first and then following up with a traditional cleanser. if you wear makeup, have oily skin, or wear spf (and you’re supposed to wear spf every single day!!!), you need to double cleanse or you’re still leaving some makeup and spf on your face, which can cause acne. i like to use the farmacy cherry balm, but i also like the oat balm from inkey list.
traditional cleansing: for my traditional cleanser, i use gel cleansers because i have really oily skin. i like to dry cleanse, which is basically rubbing the cleanser onto your skin without water for about 30 seconds before wetting my hands and continuing to cleanse my face with water for the remaining 30 seconds. yes, i wash my face for 60 seconds and so should you. we’re supposed to wash our hands for at least 30 seconds to truly clean them, so why should our faces be any different? my favorite is the glow recipe blueberry bounce gentle cleanser, but i also like the simple micellar gel wash. i remove all my cleansers with a warm, wet cloth.
chemical exfoliation: this is truly how i get my skin together. i’m a bit advanced when it comes to chemical exfoliation, so unless you’re used to it do not copy me. your skin will hate you. bha 2 days a week, retinol/differin once a week, and azelaic acid on alternating days = doll skin, period. this combo gets rid of my skin congestion, clears my pores, smooths out my skin, and gets rid of any pimples with the quickness. i use the paula’s choice 2% bha, differin, and the ordinary’s azelaic acid (or paula’s choice if i want to splurge a little).
toner: again! i’ll admit it, i put my skin through a lot as someone who wears a full face of makeup everyday and has oily skin. however, it’s important to not be constantly stripping your skin of moisture. every other product in my nighttime routine is focused on keeping my skin barrier in tact and healthy. some people like putting their toner on a cotton round and wiping it over their face to get off excess dirt, but i cleanse my skin thoroughly so that isn’t needed. i always pour a bit of toner into my hands and press it into my damp skin like a serum.
essences: this is literally just for extra hydration. essences are like toners, but they can be thicker and are always hydrating, so they feel more luxurious. my favorites are the hadalabo premium hyaluronic solution and the cosrx snail mucin essence.
serums: at night, i only use hydrating serums. i love the ordinary’s niacinamide + zinc serum at night because niacinamide not only helps with oil control but it also helps with barrier repair. i also like to use their marine hyaluronics serum. my favorite barrier repair serum is the purito centella buffet serum; as soon as i put that on, any irritation is immediately soothed. krave’s great barrier relief and paula’s choice omega complex serum are both great if you’re willing to spend a little more.
moisturizer: because i don’t have to worry about keeping my makeup on all day, i tend to go for heavier moisturizers at night. during this time, i only use moisturizers that have ingredients formulated for barrier repair, such as ceramides, centella extract, and squalane oil. i use the one kind dream cream and the cerave moisturizer in a tub.
occlusive: an occlusive is what i put on my face during the night so i wake up with soft, plump skin and don’t suffer from tewl, or trans-epidermic water loss. if you wake up with skin on the dry side, you should probably put on an occlusive at night. i used to use a facial oil, but i found that it wasn’t occlusive enough for me. now i use the cerave healing ointment, but plain vaseline works well, too.
weekly
here are the things that aren’t needed more than once a week for me. these are all either addressing issues that i don’t have as often, for special occasions, or could even be detrimental if done too often.
face shaving: i do not do at-home dermaplaning, but i do use an eyebrow razor to tackle my mustache area and in-between my brows. i also shape/tweeze my eyebrows and tweeze wherever else needed at this step.
masks: depending on where i’m going or what my goal is, i usually use either a sheet mask, a hydrogel mask, or a clay mask. sheet masks are honestly just hydrating serums, and i like to do these in the winter when i’m feeling especially dry. i use hydrogel masks tend to target certain areas such as the under eyes or lips. when i need my makeup to last a very long time or i’m about to go on a really important event, i use clay masks to completely mattify my face. when removing clay masks, i like to use a hydrating spray (my toner in a spray bottle) to make the mask wet again so i don’t tug on my skin as much during the removal process.
spot treating: i don’t get pimples often anymore, but when i do i like to get rid of them asap. i don’t pop my pimples because it’s unsanitary for a number of reasons, but i do understand the urge to pick at them. that’s why i put a spot treatment on them. i use zapzyt which is a 10% benzoyl peroxide acne treatment gel or the sulfur spot treatment from face reality. if my pimple accidentally does “pop”, i clean the area and quickly put an acne patch on it. i love the peace out acne dots with salicylic acid and the hydro-stars from star-face.
lip care: especially now that winter is coming up, it is important to not have dry, nasty, cracked lips. i use a lip scrub to exfoliate all the dead skin off, then apply an overnight lip mask. the lip scrub i use is the seraphine botanicals orange + cream lip polish. my favorite lip masks are the tarte sea jelly glaze lip masks and the laneige lip sleeping masks. obviously, throughout the day i wear lip balm and while i really love the jack black intense therapy lip balm and the dior lip glow balm, i only use vaseline now for medical reasons.
#i have to post this bc tumblr keeps messing up the format like always#anyways like i said i do a LOT when it comes to maintenance#skincare#skincare routine#if anyone wants any clarification on any of these steps or products just send an ask lmfao

For all my girlies out there who have had hormonal acne issues that have been really starting to pick up in their early 20s… I got you.
You need to try Differin adapalene gel 1%.
Differin has truly transformed my skin. Not only are my breakouts completely gone, the texture of my skin has dramatically improved, and I’m only left with a little discoloration from remaining acne marks!
Unfortunately, it is not a miracle cure. You need to use it consistently and you need to be prepared for the side effects… mainly purging. My skin purged bad from Week 2 through Week 6 and my skin didn’t completely clear up until Week 11.
I wish I had before and after pictures to show you but just know I had pepperoni face below my nose. My entire chin and sides of my mouth were full of inflammatory acne and now I only have minor discoloration (that is slowly disappearing) in the places where I had really bad breakouts.
If you’re interested, this has been my routine:
Morning
Salicylic acne cleanser by la roche-posay
Cerave AM moisturizer with sunscreen *
* use an additional sunscreen afterwards if you plan on being outside that day
Night
Cerave hydrating cleanser
pea sized amount of Differin gel
Cerave PM moisturizer
When the purging was bad, I started using the mighty patch hydrocolloid patches and oh my fucking god they are a godsend, I used them during the day and night and they really helped drain and heal my acne.
I am planning on incorporating the ordinary’s niacinamide and hyaluronic acid back into my routine. I had used these products before using differin and although they helped my skin’s moisture barrier, they did not do anything for acne.
Feel free to message me if you have any questions!!

2020 in Review: Skincare
2020 was a year of ritual and maintenance for me. I already had a strong foundation of basics - having spent most of 2018 and 2019 experimenting, this year I settled into with a tried and true routine focused on simplicity, working with my skin, and a slow and steady approach. I prefer a minimal routine to provide consistency for my sensitive skin. Changing work environments, from traveling back and forth from campus to working from home did affect my skin. I had to cut way back on using acids because of some irritation and generally tried to stick to what I know and love to keep my skin “happy”.
Here are my top skincare finds of the year.
Skincare
I am a huge proponent of quality over quantity and consistency above all else. I don’t need my products to be expensive if they are effective and affordable. That is to say, I avoid buying skincare products based solely on ingredient hype or branding and do not assume a higher price point equals quality. Instead, I consider how it works for the seasonal needs of my skin. If I suspect something won’t work for me based on past experience, I’d rather spend my money on something more promising/aligned with my needs.
My skin is on the drier sensitive side, so I usually wake up and splash my face with water, and maybe use a half pump of a hydrating cleanser, add eye cream, moisturizer, and finish with La Roche Posay Anthelios Ultralight Sunscreen Fluid in SPF 60.
Typically my evening routine involves removing my makeup and sunscreen with a reusable pad and a micellar water (Garnier or La Roche Posay), a round of massaging in a hydrating gel-cream cleanser, an active serum, and moisturizing. I used Cerave Hydrating Facial Cleanser religiously for two years, but recently, started feeling a light tingle when using it. I’ve since switched to the La Roche Posay Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser. It is nourishing and light and is the perfect second cleanse.
After moisturizing, I move onto a buffer - applying Cerave Eye Repair Cream and a light layer of La Roche Posay Toleraine Moisturizer which is hands down, my most simple but monumental find of the year, before applying my active serum. This moisturizer is a DREAM. So soft, so light, my skin feels plump and soft for hours after using. Full credit goes to @littlecrusty and @queerforspf on IG for the influence on this one.
I didn't used to use an eye cream, but after experiencing some contact dermatitis (I suspect from acid use) earlier in the year ... and turning 30, I now use one. This helps me minimize irritation and potential dryness. I used two tubes of Cerave Resurfacing Retinol, which is encapsulated and quite gentle - easing into retinol helped acclimate my skin and I’m glad I introduced retinol slowly over the course of a year and a half. Recently I “graduated” to a more potent serum. Currently I’ve incorporated Dr. Sam Bunting’s Flawless Nightly Serum which is a 4 in 1 active formula. The formula includes 5% azaelic acid, 2% granactive retinoid, 1% bakuchiol, and 10% niacinimide. It was a splurge, but it also replaced multiple steps in my nighttime routine. I have been using this for a month and am now applying nightly. I will see how long a small nightly dot lasts me and report back.
Body
Honestly, I don’t pay as much attention to my body skincare as I should. I suffer from, what is perhaps undiagnosed Eczema, particularly in high temperatures (I live In Arkansas, so that’s most of the year) and high stress periods. With that in mind, I don’t use many products for my body. Usually a gentle body wash and focus on moisture retention.
This year I discovered the Bioderma Atoderm Cleansing Oil and it was a true game changer. It lathers, doesn't leave a residue, and is comforting for my usually irritated legs. I can’t see myself buying anything else for the time being, the large bottle has lasted me 6+ months. When I remember, which is rare, I moisturize with Cerave’s Moisturizing Cream, which is lush and doesn’t leave a sticky film. I need to remind myself to repurchase in a tube, because I am wary of any and all products that come in a tub, hygiene wise.
I’d love to know what products you tried and loved this year!

Skin Care Products and Tips!
Hello again, back here with another one! I’ve struggled with my skin since I was a teenager (I’m 27 now). Within the last few months I’ve nailed down some skin care products, tips, and other things that I’ve found really helpful for keeping my skin clear and acne-free (hormonal breakouts aside). I must preface this by saying that genetics, your diet, and environmental factors definitely contribute to skin issues and sometimes these things can be out of your control, I understand that. But I do recommend drinking A LOT of water every day and trying to eat a healthy diet whenever you can. As far as products I put on my skin, the first thing I want to mention is a standout product: Origins Super Spot Remover Acne Treatment Gel ($19 at Ulta). I LOVE this stuff. If I ever see a zit popping up, I apply this bad boy and 90% of the time the zit never fully rears its ugly head. It’s a miracle. I swear by this stuff and I apply it to my zit “hot spots” on my face daily, even if there are no active breakouts. Better safe than sorry! I also use prescription strength Benzoyl Peroxide, but my dermatologist told me that the Neutrogena 10% Benzoyl Peroxide cream (Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Spot Gel, $6.89 at Target) is exactly the same as the prescription I receive. The next three products are all facial cleansers. The first that I use daily is the CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin ($14.99 at Target). This is a great and gentle cleanser that has ceramides to help keep your skin in check, and it’s dermatologist recommended. Winning. The next is an essential step for me as well, and I use this both day and night as well. It’s the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Medicated Gel Cleanser for Acne Prone Skin ($14.99 at Ulta). A little goes a LONGGGG way with this, so the tube will last you forever. I feel like this has definitely made a difference with keeping my skin clear and smooth. It has salicylic acid, which I have found definitely helps with any whiteheads but can also help slow the growth of those nasty cystic zits. I definitely recommend this product as well. The final cleanser I swear by is an exfoliator. Exfoliation is SO important for sloughing off those dead skin cells and unclogging those pores. It is the Clinique Pep Start 2-in-1 Exfoliating Cleanser ($19.50 at Ulta). This stuff is very gentle, not like those St. Ives exfoliators we all used in our youth that basically scraped the skin off of our faces. It’s gentle but effective, and my skin feels so smooth after use. To wrap up the skincare products, I use serums and moisturizers. My primary concern at this point is anti-aging, so if you don’t need that you can skip over that part and just know that I love the CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion for Normal to Dry Skin ($12.59 at Target). Effective, gentle, made with ceramides, and it doesn’t make my oily skin even oilier. It’s oil-free as well. For anti-aging, I use Paula’s Choice RESIST Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum, $42 on her website, paulaschoice.com. This is a pricier product, but as far as retinols go it’s affordable. I love the silkiness of this serum and the fact that it doesn’t make my skin sensitive after use. Made with retinols and antioxidants, it’s a winner. Now I’m definitely not a dermatologist but I’ve tried so many OTC and prescription topicals, creams, serums and treatments over the years with little-to-no success with clearing up my acne. I’m on birth control to help control my acne, and that did little to stop the breakouts, especially hormonal ones. Finally last June I bit the bullet and, at the recommendation of my dermatologist, started taking Spironolactone. I was worried about the side effects, specifically weight gain. But I’ve not had any side effects in the almost year I’ve been taking it, and it has cleared up my skin marvelously. My dose has had to be adjusted to get me where I am today but I’m so happy that I found something that really works. Again, I’m not a dermatologist and I am not suggesting that anyone needs to take this medication in order to achieve clear skin, but it is definitely another viable option. Something to think about! I hope this post was helpful to you and you can try out some of these products. Let me know how they work for you if you do! Thanks for reading!

A Guide to Taking Care of Your Skin
Your skin type matters
You may suspect you have dry, oily, or sensitive skin, but do you really know your skin type? Knowing your true skin type can help the next time you’re in the cosmetics aisle. In fact, using the wrong products — or even popularized Internet hacks — for your skin type could worsen acne, dryness, or other skin problems.
Read on to learn:
how to build your own skin care routine?
how to treat specific skin concerns like acne or scars
which DIY skin hacks aren’t healthy, even if they seem to work
Building a daily skin care routine
No matter what your skin type is, a daily skin care routine can help you maintain overall skin health and improve specific concerns like acne, scarring, and dark spots. A daily skin care routine has four basic steps you can do once in the morning and once before you sleep.
1. Cleansing: Choose a cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin tight after washing. Clean your face no more than twice a day, or just once, if you have dry skin and don’t wear makeup. Avoid washing for that squeaky-clean feeling because that means your skin’s natural oils are gone. Cleansers known to work well for all skin types include Cetaphil and Banila Clean It Zero Sherbet Cleanser.
2. Serums: A serum with vitamin C or growth factors or peptides would be better in the morning, under sunscreen. At night, retinol or prescription retinoids work best. Makeup Artist’s Choice has an effective vitamin C and E serum and retinol available.
3. Moisturizer: Even oily skin needs moisturizer, but use one that is lightweight, gel-based, and non-comedogenic, or doesn’t block your pores, like CeraVe’s facial lotion. Dry skin may benefit from more cream-based moisturizers like MISSHA Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream. Most brands will label their products as gel or cream on their packaging.
4. Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF 15 minutes before heading outdoors, as it takes a while for sunscreen to activate. Darker skin tones actually need more sun protection because hyperpigmentation is harder to correct. Try EltaMD’s sunscreen, which offers broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection and is recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation.
Choose products that fit your skin type and sensitivity, and remember to read the labels. Some products, such as retinol or prescription retinoids, should only be applied at night.
For all skin types
Stay hydrated.
Change pillow cases at least once a week.
Wash or wrap up hair before bed.
Wear sunscreen every day and apply 15 minutes before going out.
Start with a basic and simple routine to see how your skin reacts. Once you’re comfortable, you can then add extra products such as exfoliants, masks, and spot treatments to boost your skin’s health.
And don’t forget to patch test new products, especially if you suspect you have sensitive skin. This can help you identify potential allergic reactions.
To patch test a new product:
Apply a small amount of product on your skin in a discreet area, such as the inside of your wrist or your inner arm.
Wait 48 hours to see if there’s a reaction.
Check the area at 96 hours after application to see if you have a delayed reaction.
An allergic reaction may include irritation, redness, small bumps, or itchiness. If you notice these symptoms, wash the area you tested with water and a gentle cleanser. Then return the product and try another that better suits your skin type.
DIY hacks to avoid (even if everyone does it)
People report wonders from using DIY hacks like lemon juice and toothpaste for common skin problems like acne bumps and dark spots. Even award-winning actress Emma Stone claims her skin care secret is baking soda. But the truth is these hacks may cause more long-term harm than benefit because they can damage your skin’s barrier.
Avoid these DIY hacks
Lemon juice: It may have citric acidic, but it’s far too acidic and can cause dark spots to appear after sun exposure. It can also dry and irritate your skin.
Baking soda: At a pH level of 8, baking soda will stress your skin, significantly decrease your skin’s water content, and cause dry skin.
Garlic: In raw form, garlic can cause skin allergies, eczema, skin inflammation, and watery blisters.
Toothpaste: The ingredients in toothpaste may kill germs and absorb oil, but they can also dry out or irritate your skin.
Sugar: As an exfoliant, sugar is too harsh for the skin on your face.
Vitamin E: Topical application of vitamin E can irritate your skin and is not proven to improve scar appearance.
Some of these ingredients may be all natural and cost-effective, but they aren’t formulated for your skin. Even if you don’t feel immediate side effects, these ingredients can cause delayed or long-term damage. It’s best to use products formulated for your face. Talk to your doctor or dermatologist before trying DIY applications on your skin.
How to treat skin problems?
There are ways to tackle skin problems without damaging your skin. Just remember the number one rule of skin care: Don’t pick! Picking at acne, blackheads, scabs, or other skin problems can cause open wounds or darker skin spots known as hyperpigmentation. Open wounds can lead to infections, more acne, or scars. The deeper the wound, the more likely your skin will scar.
Here are some scientifically backed ways to treat problem areas.
Acne
Acne treatment depends on how deep or serious your acne is. Overall skin care is the most important step in treating acne, but for mild acne you can use nonprescription products from your local drugstore such as:
salicylic acid (Stridex maximum strength acne pads)
benzoyl peroxide (Clean & Clear Persa-Gel 10 acne medication)
alpha hydroxy acids
adapalene
tea tree oil
Always apply sunscreen after using these products in the morning, since they can cause extra skin sensitivity.
For immediate, inflamed, and individual pimples, you can also try acne patches or stickers. These are clear, thick patches that work as spot treatments to help promote blemish healing and prevent infections. Like blister bandages, acne patches pull out the fluid, sometimes overnight. It’s best to use these before you sleep as makeup can’t cover them.
Sebaceous filaments
Sebaceous filaments are tiny, cylinder-like tubes in your pores that are whitish yellow. These are often confused with blackheads, but blackheads are actually a type of acne that’s oxidized. Sebaceous filaments can make your pores look bigger, and you may be tempted to remove them by pinching your skin or using pore strips. But these methods may have more side effects than benefits for your skin, especially if you don’t do them properly.
Overtime, you can also cause:
irritation
open pores and infection
dryness
redness
peeling
Topical preparations containing retinol or retinoids can help keep pores clear and clean. You may also find benefits from massaging your face with mineral or castor oil for one minute.
Another way of removing sebaceous filaments is with an extraction tool. This is a small metal instrument with a tiny circle at the end.

Review: CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser
I’m definitely someone who likes to share what I’ve just bought or am currently using on my Instagram Stories, but the response I had when I shared that I’d just started using the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser was huge!
I had so many followers asking me what I thought; I think it’s because the brand is still pretty new to the UK (it launched March 2018), although I’ve often read about it in magazines from the US. It’s definitely got some kind of cult following and I’ve seen many a dermatologist suggesting it as a range that’s perfect for those wanting results at a budget, and without any side effects. To be clear, this is the only CeraVe product I’ve ever used, but upon reading about the rest of the line - particularly their other cleansers - it seems to be gaining a lot of love in the UK, and I really like the fact that it’s focused on hydration, whatever your skin type. I feel that, when you have skin issues such as acne, you often feel like hydration is something bad that’s going to make things worse, but it’s key for all skin types.
I don’t know about you, but when trendy ranges or products or ingredients pop up, I give it a good six months of waiting to see the feedback. Someone I definitely trust is Caroline Hirons - aesthetician and vlogger - because I loved how she told the truth about Cetaphil - one of the worst cleansers I’ve ever used that DRIED out my skin - and exposed the reason that the brand gets so much endorsement from derms and other members of the medical community, is because it’s owned by Galderma, a huge drugs company.
The reason I’ve taken a lot longer to try CeraVe was just because I wasn’t really looking for another option, particularly when it came to my cleanser. I’ve probably used Super Facialist Salicylic Acid Purifying Cleansing Wash for at least a year because it met all my needs. When you have skin that’s affected by your hormones I think you take comfort in the products that you know well, the ones that won’t rock the boat. The Super Facialist SA cleanser has never left me feeling dry but always leaves my skin clean and soft; it’s been my go-to after my oil cleanse if I’m wearing makeup, or if my face has been bare I’ll just wash my face twice with it. The only reason I ended up trying the Cerave was because: I ran out of Super Facialist and headed to Boots. Next to Super Facialist was the e.l.f. Super Clarity with Niacinamide. I have never used anything from e.l.f. before, but because it was just £6 I decided to give it a go. Also, I have been loving the Glossier Super Pure Niacinamide + Zinc Serum - literally skin-changing - so I thought, ‘why not?’ FYI the Serum has been sold out since Black Friday and Glossier really needs to hook it up.
Anyway, once I got the e.l.f. cleanser home I realised I had made an error. When I tried the formula on my hand it looked and felt like one of those pearlescent bath foams that was destined to dry my skin out. I used it for three days and to be honest, I just felt wary of using it the whole time - and it inevitably did dry my skin out. Suffice to say, while working in London for a few days, I had to pop to my fave Boots store - Covent Garden! - and was planning to go back to Super Facialist. Instead I passed by the CeraVe section and noticed just how sold out it was; has to be a good sign, right? I saw one bottle of the SA Smoothing Cleanser left and I knew I had to try it. At £12 it’s double the price of e.l.f and £3 more than Super Facialist, but it holds more. Now that I’ve been using it for a couple of weeks, I’m really impressed with how far it stretches; I’m not even halfway through the 236ml yet.
Texture-wise, the CeraVe SA Smoothing Cleanser is super light, almost like a watery gel, and totally transparent. There’s zero fragrance which I don’t mind in a cleanser, and is described as being perfect for ‘dry, rough, bumpy skin’. Although those words kind of hurt my feelings, I get it - the more prescriptive the high street can get, the better. With a combination of three essential ceramides and hydration-boosting Hyaluronic Acid, on top of the Salicylic Acid, I’ve found this cleanser to be super softening and perfect for a double cleanse. It’s also great for mornings when you feel like you need a refresh. I say this because, recently, I’ve switched to just washing my face with water first thing - especially if I know I’ll be washing my face again a couple of hours later after a trip to the gym. I have never felt any inkling of dryness after using this, and my skin truly feels smoother since I started using it. I should point out that during this time I have also been using the Glossier serum and Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant (also Salicylic Acid) so it’s perfectly reasonable to assume that it’s a combination of all three. All I can say to that is, a cleanser is often the point of difference, because, no matter what you’re putting on your skin, it’s a waste of time if you’re not cleansing properly.
In short, yes I will be buying this again!
What’s your fave cleanser for specific skin concerns?

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FACE WASH FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE: THE COMPLETE GUIDE
There are so many skincare products on the market, it can be overwhelming to try to decipher which one is best for you and your skin type.
In this article, we will help you decipher your type of skin and the different types of face washes that are designed to work for specific skin types.
Using the wrong face wash for your skin type can cause your skin to have unpleasant reactions or make you think your skin is a certain type but is only a reaction to what you are using. We will explain it all here!.
HOW TO KNOW WHAT TYPE OF SKIN YOU HAVE
Thoroughly washing your face right before bed
Not applying any skincare products after cleansing
Keeping the room at a comfortable temperature, not too cold
Testing your face in the morning for any areas of dryness or oil
There are areas of your face that you should pay particular attention to and these are known as the “T Zone” and the “C Zone”
The T Zone includes your forehead, nose, chin and the area on either side of the nose
The C Zone is the area on the outer side of the cheeks from temple to chin
Dr. Shetty instructs you to touch the areas of each zone to check if it is dry, oily or neither, which is normal skin. If both the T Zone and the C Zone are oily, then it is oily skin. If both zones are dry, sensitive, flaky and/or red, then it is dry skin.
You may even experience a combination of both for, what’s considered, combination skin.
The products you are using could also make your skin more oily or more dry and sensitive.
DRY OR SENSITIVE SKIN
Those with dry skin are most likely lacking naturally-produced healthy oils, also known as fat lipids. You may also have a hard time retaining natural water or moisture.
Diet and environmental factors can influence the dryness of the skin. Medical conditions, like eczema, can cause redness, itchy and flaky skin. Those with sensitive skin also experience dryness and often have negative reactions to skincare products.
WHAT’S A GOOD FACE WASH FOR DRY OR SENSITIVE SKIN?
Creamy or milk-based face washes would be ideal. It is highly recommended to avoid exfoliating with a facial scrub as this can further irritate dry and sensitive skin.
Choosing a moisturizing and hydrating cleanser is recommended. Ingredients to look for include hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, to help restore moisture.
Soothing ingredients for irritated skin would be aloe vera and soy. Avoid added fragrances and products that promote anti-aging, which can be drying to the skin.
SO WHAT IS THE BEST DRUGSTORE FACE WASH THAT WILL CLEAN THE SKIN WITHOUT OVER-DRYING? AFFORDABLE WASHES THAT WE THINK YOU’LL LOVE INCLUDE:
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Cleanser
Olay Sensitive Facial Cleanser with Hungarian Water Essence
Dove Beauty Bar for Sensitive Skin
CeraVe Hydrating Face Wash
OTHER FACIAL CLEANERS THAT ARE A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE BUT ARE WORTH THE COST INCLUDE:
First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser
La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanse
Avène Antirougeurs CLEAN Redness-Relief Refreshing Cleansing Lotion
Fresh Soy Face Cleanser
Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel
OILY SKIN
The skin naturally produces oil to serve as a protective barrier and to help keep the skin hydrated. Though, too much oil can block pores and trap dirt creating whiteheads and blackheads.
It is important to keep in mind that stripping your skin of too much oil will lead to a production of more oil in order to provide that protection.
WHAT’S A GOOD FACE WASH FOR OILY SKIN?
With skin that feels damp and greasy, it can be hard to get that clean feeling. The challenge is getting that perfect facial cleanser that will leave skin feeling clean with a healthy amount of moisture.
Oil-free foaming cleansers tend to be most effective. Gel cleansers also provide a great balance to even out the skin, plus it offers a cooling element.
HERE ARE SOME RECOMMENDED CLEANSERS WE THINK YOU WILL LOVE THAT PROVIDE A GENTLE YET EFFECTIVE WASH AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE:AT YOUR LOCAL DRUGSTORE:
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser for Normal to Oily Skin
Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser

Dermalogica Dermal Clay Cleanser
Boscia Detoxifying Black Charcoal Cleanser

COMBINATION SKIN
For those with a T Zone and a C Zone that are both oily and dry, yes, there is a wash designed just for you too. These face washes are formulated to not strip the healthy oils while also providing the moisture needed for the dry areas.
It is essential to use the perfect formula of a gentle cleanser to calm dry skin with the right amount of moisturizer.
WHAT’S A GOOD FACE WASH FOR COMBINATION SKIN?
When looking for a face wash, dermatologists put these ingredients on the red flag list to avoid for combination skin: salicylic acid, alcohol, and benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients are often used in facial treatments to combat bacteria which causes acne.
These are not necessary for those who do not have acne, which can be caused by excess oils, dirt, and makeup.
That is the key – find a cleanser to remove these impurities while maintaining a soft, supple and healthy result.
AFFORDABLE FACIAL CLEANSERS AVAILABLE FOR THIS SKIN TYPE:AT THE DRUG STORE:

Finding the right face wash for acne is what we want to help you with.
WHAT’S A GOOD FACE WASH TO HELP WITH ACNE?
Here is where benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, and even sulfur come in to play. These ingredients are found in most acne-treating face washes to help thoroughly cleanse the skin of bacteria that causes inflammation and blocked pores that lead to breakouts.
WE’VE FOUND A GOOD SELECTION OF CLEANSERS THAT WILL HELP TO TREAT THIS PROBLEM SKIN.THE MOST AFFORDABLE, DRUGSTORE FACE WASHES INCLUDE:

How I cleared up my terrible skin
Hey guys! If you are looking for advice for acne (any skin type) I just wrote this up for someone struggling. I had terrible acne for years, and I finally found what helps.
My acne started in 5th grade, and then got really, and I mean REALLY bad in grades 7-9. I'll never forget when my best friend in grade 7 told me, "your acne makes a question mark on your forehead". Lol. I'm 21 now. After all these years, my acne finally decided to calm down shortly after high school. I think for me, it was a mix between genetics, stress, a lot of exercise (so I sweat a lot), and hormones.
There are a few things that have helped me. One of them was finding a very gentle, unscented face wash (I use Cerave SA cleanser) on my face every single day. Routine is definitely one of the most important things. If I stay at a friends place and skip one night of my face wash routine, I break out almost immediately. If you are unsure which face wash to get, watch Skincarebyhyram on youtube- he also has videos about which moisurizers are good based on your skin type, and a lot of his videos cover products that you can find at any drug store or walmart. I thought I had the BEST face wash for years because it had tea tree, but it was actually making my face so much worse. Research is key! Also, do not use physical exfoliators, they damaged my skin sooo bad. Chemical ones are ok in moderation. I use a chemical peel by "Theordinary" once per week. I forget what it's called but it's red.
Something else that has really helped me is NOT touching my face. This means no resting your hand on your cheek in class, do not pick at your acne, etc. Leave your skin alone, popping pimples can lead to scarring. Also, order silk pillowcases off of Amazon (or get them anywhere). They have done wonders for my hair and skin. And wash your sheets and pillowcases once per week!! You'd never know how much bacteria is on your pillowcases. This has also helped tremendously.
All of these things have helped me a lot, but what's helped me the most is asking my doctor for a prescribed acne cream. Accutane really helps a lot of people but there are a LOT of negative side effects, I've never tried it. I was prescribed a vitamin A Acid gel for my face, but it made my acne worse. Then, I was prescribed a cream called Benzaclin which has helped me sooo much. Unfortunately, many aspects of skincare and getting rid of acne comes down to trial and error. I'll also add that a lot of treatments (whether it be the face wash, cream, etc) will actually make your skin worse before it gets better. This is because it pulls all the nasty stuff out from below your skin, but it clears up soon after. If it doesn't clear up within a few weeks (or however long your doctor says), it would be worth it to ask to try something else.
I still get breakouts and I don't think my skin has ever been completely clear, but overall my skin is a lot better than it used to be! I've attached photos for reference (I do have makeup on in the second pic, but you can see that there is still a drastic difference). Remember that acne is completely normal, especially if you're a teenager. Just try your best, talk to your doctor, and follow my recommendations, but also remember that a good portion of how much acne you get comes down to genetics and hormones.
If anyone has any other questions please feel free to message me! After my skin in middle school, I'm basically a skincare expert hahahha. Good luck guys!!!
