Note
Since I laughed at you for not having the anon asks on, I'll ask you a question. :P
Aside from Titanic, what other movies inspire you when drawing Cleon?
I love Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock so much that I want them to be my celebrity parents. But they are just best friends and always have been this way since they worked on the film Speed (1994), and The Lake House (2006) 12 years later.
When I first got into Cleon, they were the only "couple" in my mind and I have been preaching this ever since. I think they are my core of Cleon, and I rewatch Speed every month lmao.
I've also mentioned a few movies on my AO3 log, and here are MORE honorable mentions:
Action Movies:
Point Break (1991) Someone recommended me to watch Fast & Furious series for RE AU(and I have), but this movie is the OG of F&F series.
The Gray Man (2022) Kickass power couple saving a little girl, together. I use it for RE4 era ref, and I kinda have a reverse AU of Claire being trained to be an FBI agent to follow her brother's steps and Leon is just a random college boy.
Mission Impossible series I was talking with my friend about how Hollywood cliche Capcom can be.
RED (2010) & RED 2 (2013) If RE9 is about the OG team reunion like DI, they will be exactly like these movies, grandpas & grandmas still kicking ass.
Fantasy & Rom-com:
One Day (2011) Friends to lovers…The drama. In fact, my newest art has used this for ref, and you will see it in 2 days.
Now and Then (1995) Teenage Cleon. Childhood neighbors, enemies to friends to crushes lmao.
What Maisie Knew (2012) Spoiler alert I'm planning to draw a series of this. I'm not into Cleon having children but if they are, I'll do it my way ;)
Life as We Know It (2010) Enemies to friends to lovers again. And raising a baby together.
No Strings Attached (2011), Friends with Benefits (2011) Not really into FWB Cleon but you writers kinda like to write this? So I rewatch them recently, well, it could work.
The Mummy (1999) You cannot tell me Rick O'Connell didn't reference Leon's design. Again, gonna draw this soon.
The Huntsman: Winter's War(2016) Pretty average, I only use ref for outfit design but Jessica Chastain is so beautiful in this. (But my ideal live-action Claire is Rebecca Ferguson, just FYI)
Far and Away (1992) LMAO I've always thought of this movie as the prequel of Titanic.
Angst:
Drive (2011) My favorite movie of all time. And I saw someone already draw it, I reblog it to my main account a few days ago. I will draw another one soon, my fav scene is not the elevator scene so, no worries.
Marriage Story (2019) Literally just rewatched it last night. I love the arguing/fighting scene so much, and it kinda suits my idea of how Claire will leave Leon for his drinking problem.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) I don't know why this movie got so much hate, but I think the part when Steve came back and later Diana has to let him go…Inspired me to draw Cleon.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) Directed by David Fincher. It's more for Claire honestly. But the Scandinavian scenery is something I long for.
Sci-fi:
Oblivion(2013), Edge of Tomorrow(2014) Both staring Tom Cruise. And I regret that I didn't go to the theater for both of them, at the time I thought the posters were boring, but they turned out to be really good, at least for my taste.
Not gonna put Romeo and Juliet (1996) on the list bc I don't use Leonardo DiCaprio for my Leon when drawing, I use Brad Pitt more, for he has a better fashion sense haha. Claire Danes is already perfect.
Some TV shows as well:
Full House (1987-1995) Uncle Jesse & Aunt Becky, just search them on Pinterest.
My So-Called Life (1994-1995) Angela Chase & Jordan Catalano. I Only use Jared Leto's appearance for ref; characteristically speaking, Leon is more like Brian in this show.
Peaky Blinders (2013-2022) For Noir outfit or Mob AU cuz why not?
Rougue One (2016 movie), Andor (2022) I love Star Wars and fuck…Cassian and Jyn are so Cleon-coded! I'm mostly into SW fashion, they have some dope jackets in Andor. Seriously go watch, Andor is as good as The Last of Us.
Ride with Norman Reedus (2016-) They got some cool bikes in the first season and Cleon bike date on PCH…My beach Cleon is inspired by this show actually.
I didn't even try hard to think about these and can still go on for days…Still, I think it's good enough for one ask for now hehe.

LSAD Seminar 02: 3D Studies with Elaine Riordan - Part 2 (I ran out of space edition)
This was originally all included in my last post on the 3D Studies seminar, but I ran up against the "30 images per post" limit that our cruel overlords imposed upon us. Basically I want to run through the seven elements of 3D studies outlined in the seminar and share an artist, found through my own research, who I feel exemplifies that particular element.
Form
Tumblr media
Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois is so renowned it almost feels like cheating to include her on a list like this, especially given the breadth of her work, incorporating many disciplines and techniques in her work. I chose Bourgeois for "form" as I feel she pushed the boundaries of what could be considered "form" as much as any artist ever has. Utilising mirrors like canvases, for example, makes us question where the form of a given piece lies. Similarly incorporating other elements such as structure, location, and space allowed her to express ideas in an entirely new way, unburdened by a dogmatic sense of what form "should" be. In this way Bourgeois' work broadened our understanding of what form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Structure
Tumblr media
Georges Vantongerloo
Georges Vantongerloo was a Belgian abstract sculptor and founding member of the "De Stijl" or Neoplasticism movement. Proponents of De Stijl advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and colour; they simplified visual compositions to vertical and horizontal, using only black, white and primary colors. This idea of using reduction to find an underlying meaning led him to explore structure in his art. Vantongerloo never achieved major success in life and is often considered to have been too devoted to his movement. But through his sacrificial nature we gained insight into the pure structural nature of art, and the truth and beauty found therein.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Texture
Tumblr media
Anni Albers
"Besides surface qualities, such as rough and smooth, dull and shiny, hard and soft, textiles also includes colour, and, as the dominating element, texture, which is the result of the construction of weaves. Like any craft it may end in producing useful objects, or it may rise to the level of art."
A quote from the woman herself sums it up better than I ever could. Anni Albers is one of the most important textile artists there ever was. Her work elevated the standing of textile work in the art world and paved the way for the many artists to appear in her wake. Like many who work with 3D, she blurred the lines between art and design, gaining recognition for the traditionally feminine world of "craft" often excluded from the wider art world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Volume
Tumblr media
Bruno Catalano
Bruno Catalano is a Italian-French sculptor best known for his sculptures of figures with substantial sections missing. In my previous post I described the concept of "volume" in 3D studies as having to do with negative space, we must perceive an absence of some kind to truly grasp the volume of something. Much like the visual hollow of a glass informs its volume, Catalano's sculptures express volume specifically through their substantial missing portions. We as observers are forced to contemplate the "how" of a work, in such a way we would never need to with a conventional sculpture. Similarly Catalano's common practice of clothing his sculptures in everyday attire achieves the same effect in an additive manner, rather than a subtractive approach.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weight
Tumblr media
Sheila Hicks
Sheila Hicks is another who could reasonably be argued to define basically every element on this list. Her work is similar in ways to Anni Albers, whom I placed on this list under the category of "Texture". While Hicks works undoubtedly deals with texture, as it does sculpture, colour, and narrative among others, what has always stood out to me first and foremost about her work is it's sheer weight. Hicks is particularly known for the contrast in the scale of her works, ranging from minute to massive. What intrigues me though is how through her work, we see the minute become the massive. Common, lightweight elements like wool and string become enormous behemoths, stacked like rocks in galleries or flowing like waterfalls through ceiling installations. There are many artists who work with heavy material but few who convey weight regardless of material.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Space
Tumblr media
Chiharu Shiota
Chiharu Shiota was my immediate pick to exemplify the element of "space". Her work is not location-specific as it can be rearranged and displayed throughout many galleries but it is absolutely space-specific. Her installations dominate the space they occupy like few others. Shiota's work leverages the element of space to create ideas around the body and flesh, territory, and alienation. I feel there's not much else I can write here other than I'd love to visit an installation of hers one day and see the sheer scale of the space for myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Location
Tumblr media
Lady Pink
I chose Lady Pink for the element of "location" as her signature graffiti work is deeply tied to her hometown of New York City and her identity therein. She began her career in graffiti in 1979 after the loss of her boyfriend, tagging his name across the city. I wrote in my last post that my understanding of location as an element, is that it's deeply attached to a work's context. Something so inextricably linked it would lose meaning were it removed from it's location. From the beginning Lady Pink's work has been inextricable from her life in New York.

More information about the house and Eduardo Catalano can be found...
Here
Here
And here
For a brief stint in the 1950s, Raleigh had as many (or more) Modernist houses as Chicago thanks to the North Carolina State University's School of Design. Eduardo Catalano was one of the architects connected to NCSU and this is the amazing hyperbolic paraboloid roof he designed for his family house--a design which even earned the praise of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Unfortunately, this house fell into disrepair and has since been torn down and McMansions have overgrown the old site of this house. (That's the fate of a lot of these really interesting Modernist buildings around here.)

TASK 2: Plane + Balance + Site
Paper, Card and Plywood
Once again it is evident I am intrigued by visual contrast with the white paper visually contrasting against the other materials, concrete wall and background. I believe the piece is also well balanced and has a directional, arrow like quality that holds it to the plane. This is definitely a piece that encourages you to view it from multiple angles, with an additional focus on negative space. The 'windows' clearly show an awareness of space that highlights the background as an integral element of the piece. This also makes the piece appear larger than it actually is. Furthermore, the heaviest of materials (plywood) is held up by flimsy card highlighting not only a visual balance but a physical balance. This piece is definitely a result of autonomous experimentation and construction. I researched the artists BRUNO CATALANO specifically his ‘Missing Pieces’ sculpture that brilliantly uses negative and is site specific. Also, RASHEED ARAEEN for his minimalist works, specifically 'zero to infinity' because I like how he made the structural component obvious, displaying blue cubes organised in a lattice design. This also invite the viewer to view the works from various perspectives as the cubes are hollow.

There are situations I’ve found archiving images from a campaign when the designer client/Fashion House’s usage period expire. For one reason or another were not submitted in an editorial set, used on social media and/or in a branding campaign.
Case in point this series of three images by the boardwalk in Ashbury Park, NJ. They were shot on the first day of a 2 day campaign for Heritage India Fashions in June 2021.
