It is frankly disgusting to see more than one of her fellow debutantes and their mamas simpering over her favorite uncle. “Positively sick-making,” she complains to Aunt Pen at Aunt Danbury’s ball.

"It’s hardly unprecedented for a man his age to marry a girl just out of the schoolroom,” Aunt Pen points out neutrally, eyes flickering over the assembled guests.

But the fact remains that Uncle Colin is old enough to be the (handsome, charming, well-heeled, and admittedly not truly old) father of a girl making her bow.

Of course, to find a more age-appropriate woman for him whom she and Caroline would not shudder to call aunt, Belinda will have to look to the widows and spinsters for prospective candidates, she concludes, eying the edges of the ballroom with greater interest.

Or a canon divergence AU featuring two very meddlesome nieces and a certain bachelor uncle and widowed honorary aunt.

Daphne and Simon’s Children

The duke and duchess of Hastings have five children: Amelia, Belinda, Caroline, David, and Edward. Eldest daughter Amelia takes after her mother and uncle Anthony, being a caring and protective person especially when it comes to her younger cousins and siblings. As the first to marry, Amelia’s courtship and husband are considered less scandalous, even though her husband had a bit of a reputation that he was trying to overcome. Second daughter Belinda takes after her uncle Benedict more so than anyone else in her family. She’s perhaps the most sensitive of the Basset children and can be a bit of a hopeless romantic. Like her sisters, Belinda has a fairly scandal-free courtship and marriage. Third daughter Caroline takes after her uncle Colin a lot and just like him, she is able to look innocent when she gets in trouble. Caroline also has a fairly scandal-free courtship and marriage. Eldest son and fourth child David secures the future of the dukedom. He takes after his father a lot, preferring to stay out of the spotlight. David finds his match in a dowager countess, with a slightly complicated love story. Youngest child Edward inherits his father’s stutter but has a better relationship with it than his father ever does. He's been given the space to be imperfect and knows that his worth isn’t tied to his ability to speak fluently. Edward finds his match in an American heiress from New York City and it’s a slightly scandalous match.

Amelia Diana Violet Basset

Born in 1814, Amelia is an interesting cross of her Uncle Anthony and her mother in terms of personality. As the eldest, both in her immediate family and her extended family, she takes on a similar role to her uncle, while also possessing the nurturing nature of her mother. She takes her role as the eldest very seriously and can sometimes be too much of a mother hen, especially when it comes to her younger cousins. 

Amelia’s godfather is Anthony and her godmother is Francesca.

Despite having a very close relationship with her mother, Amelia was always a little bit of a daddy’s girl. Part of it was being the first child. Simon was always besotted with her and it was a different type of besotted than the way he was with his other children. He was floored by how easy it was to love Amelia, this tiny little human who was a mix of himself and Daphne.

One summer, when she was about 17, Amelia accidentally discovered that she really loved cooking and baking. However, it was not considered an acceptable pastime for a duke’s daughter, so Amelia had to conceal her love for it. She does bribe her cooks to teach her how to make her and her family’s favorite dishes.This also allows her to forge a close relationship with her cousin, Miles’s wife, Grace who is a baker. 

Amelia’s first season ends up being a bit of a disaster… on many fronts. Her family is too protective and doesn’t back off. She escapes one too many unsavory encounters. It results in the whole Bridgerton family having to take a step back and reassess everything. Her second season is much smoother, especially given that she has Belinda to turn to. 

Amelia married Robert Joliffe, Viscount Lowestoft, in 1835, when she was twenty-one and he was twenty-nine. Their relationship starts fairly low-key, with them continuing to run into one another at events. Robert’s got a bit of a reputation, but he’s been working on being better because he cannot shake the look of disappointment in his late father’s eyes. Eventually, their interactions become tinged with romance and Robert’s working to be the complete opposite of his reputation. Amelia’s fascinated by all of these combating aspects of his personality and by the end of the season, they’re engaged. Their marriage has a rocky start, though, as they both try to find what feels right for them and their relationship. 

Canonically, Amelia and Robert have two sons named Charles and Thomas. Charles’s middle name is Robert, while Thomas’s middle name is Simon.

Belinda Minerva Daisy Basset

Born in 1815, Belinda is similar in personality to her Uncle Benedict. She has a lot of traits from her mother as well, but in general, she has a similar role in her family to her Uncle Benedict. She’s sensitive and kind and has a creative mind, often jotting down random poems and is talented at the piano. She also tends to be the most sensitive when it comes to names and does not like when people make fun of her name or other people’s name. 

Belinda’s godfather is Colin and her godmother is Eloise.

Belinda is, in many ways, more Bridgerton than Basset. Appearance wise, she looks a lot like her Bridgerton relatives with chestnut brown hair and her Uncle Colin’s green eyes. Her personality also aligns more with the Bridgerton family than her father and his family members.

Belinda ends up having a close relationship with Lady Danbury. It doesn’t really happen until Belinda has her debut into the ton. She’s standing there, watching some sleazy, old lord trying to make his way to her when Lady Danbury shows up. She’s always been a fixture in Belinda’s life, but suddenly there’s something different about it. Agatha Danbury is going to keep an eye out for the Basset kids, her own great-grandchildren, and their many cousins. 

In 1838, at the age of 23, Belinda married Kellan Butler (30), the earl of Wexford. He was not what Belinda expected for a husband. He’s Irish and Anglican and doesn’t come to London that much, as he wasn’t one of the representatives in Parliament of the Irish peerage. It wasn’t until the winter of 1838 that Kellan found himself having to serve in Parliament and his mother suddenly set herself on finding him a bride. Eventually, he and Belinda met. Belinda, determined not to make any mistakes after watching her sisters marry, put Kellan through his paces. Despite this, it was a relatively simple and straightforward courtship.

Canonically, Belinda and Kellan have one daughter named May, who was born in 1839. Her full name ends up being May Agatha Butler. She’s named after her paternal grandmother, Mary Butler, and Agatha Danbury.

Caroline Agatha Daphne Basset

Born in 1816, Caroline takes after her Uncle Colin quite a bit. They’re both the third sibling. They’re just similar in personality. Caroline is quite friendly, always ready to make a new friend. She’s also figured out how to look innocent whenever things occur and it doesn’t go the way that she wants to. She doesn’t have his appetite, though. She shares his desire to make her own mark on the world and have them remember her.

Caroline’s godfather is Benedict and her godmother is Kate.

Caroline starts talking a few months later than both of her older sisters. She wasn’t delayed, and she started walking before Amelia and Belinda, but it still scared the hell out of Simon. Daphne has to remind him that even if Caroline did stutter, that doesn’t mean they won’t love her any differently than their other children.

Caroline is closer to Simon than Daphne. She also takes after Simon in appearance, the only one of her sisters to take after the Basset family in appearance as opposed to the Bridgerton family.

Caroline really admires her Aunt Francesca and Aunt Hyacinth. There’s just something about them that makes Caroline want to be like them. She’s more like Hyacinth than she is Francesca, which isn’t surprising given that she’s rather similar in personality to Colin.

Caroline married Lord Geoffrey Findlay-Wyatt, a second son, in 1837, when she was twenty-one and he was twenty-five. They’ve got a bit of a love at first sight vibe, where they caught one another’s eye across the ballroom and fell hard. It’s not the easiest journey towards love, but it is simpler than her sister, Amelia’s courtship. However, a lot of people sort of laugh off Geoffrey’s pursuit of Caroline because he’s young and everyone assumes that he wants to spend his 20s unmarried. Maybe he would have, but he really loves Caroline and wants to be married to her. 

Canonically, Caroline and Geoffrey have two children named Henry and Victoria. Henry’s middle name is Simon, while Victoria’s middle name is Caroline.

David Anthony Edmund Colin Basset

Born in 1817, David is more outgoing than Simon, but not by much. He’s still an introvert and prefers to observe everything that goes on in front of him. His sisters are the true extroverts of the Basset family. David is the first Basset child to take after Simon and not a Bridgerton. 

David’s godfather is Gregory and his godmother is Hyacinth. 

David is a momma’s boy. He has a very close relationship with Daphne.

Upon learning that he finally had a son, Simon worried and stressed. The biggest worry was that David would stutter and that he’d screw David up because of the grudge that he had held towards his father. There was also a momentary sadness that Hastings line would continue, but that disappeared the moment that he finally saw and held David.

David is very close with his cousin, Miles Bridgerton. They’ve always been close and even end up getting married the same year. There’s something about being born in the same year and attending school together that bonds you forever. In fact, Miles is the godfather to David’s only son, Reg. 

David takes his duties as the heir to the Hastings dukedom quite seriously. He’s not as serious as his cousin, Edmund, but David knows that being the heir isn’t something that you can take lightly. People will be depending on you and screw ups can be devastating for those that rely on you.

David has had a crush on Phoebe Wycliff, the dowager countess of Royce since he first saw, when she wasn’t yet a dowager countess as her first husband was still living. Nine years later, David finds that his feelings for Phoebe are still there. So, when she approaches him with an offer to become her lover, David jumps at the chance. Slowly, but surely, David’s feelings grow stronger and all he wants to do is make her smile with a genuine smile.

David married Phoebe in 1844, when they were both twenty-seven.

David and Phoebe have three children, Rex (or Reg), Seraphina, and Goldie. Their eldest is a son named Reginald David Simon Basset, who is called Reg by David and Phoebe and Rex by everyone else. Their second child is a daughter named Seraphina Daphne Basset, who is three years younger than Rex. Their youngest is a daughter named Marigold Tabitha “Goldie” Basset, who is four years younger than Seraphina.

Edward Simon Gregory Benedict Basset

Born in 1834, Edward takes after Simon. He is quiet and taciturn and the most introverted Basset. He also stutters, much to Simon’s dismay. However, Edward never had the issues with it that Simon did. His family were very supportive and gave Edward the space to be imperfect. It probably helped that he was the spare. In fact, it takes Simon longer to accept Edward’s stutter than it does for Edward himself to accept it. Edward has always known that his worth and intelligence is not tied to his difficulties speaking.

Edward’s godfather is Phillip and his godmother is Sophie.

Edward is a momma’s boy, but he is also quite close to Simon. There’s such a large age gap between himself and his siblings, that Edward spent more one-on-one time with his parents than any of his siblings ever did. 

Edward is quite close with his cousin, Anthony “Ant” Bridgerton. In fact, Edward takes on a similar role to his father in their friendship, as Ant is rather similar to their Uncle Anthony. Ant is also the godfather to Edward’s son, Gus. 

Edward is the tallest Basset. He is an inch taller than David and is very pleased by that fact. He enjoys being the tallest. 

Edward marries Molly Campbell, an American heiress. They have a slightly rocky start and Molly was supposedly engaged, but eventually they fall in love.

Edward married Molly in 1859, when he was twenty-five and she was twenty-one. 

Edward and Molly have four children, each two years apart. Their eldest is a daughter named Evelyn Daphne Basset, their second child is a son named Augustus Simon Edward “Gus” Basset, their third child is a daughter named Julia Molly Basset, and their youngest is a daughter named Violet Agatha “Lettie” Basset.

Bonus: August Edmund Colin “Auggie” Basset

Born in 2014, Auggie only exists in my modern AUs, where he is the twin brother of Amelia and he’s younger than her by ten minutes. However, he doesn’t take after either of his parents. Instead, he takes after his Uncle Colin. He’s a daredevil, too, and always comes traipsing in with some new minor injury, usually a black eye or a split lip.

Auggie’s godfather is Colin and his godmother is Eloise. 

Despite his daredevil ways, Auggie’s profession is rather mundane. He follows his father’s footsteps and becomes the vice president of the Hastings Foundation, a nonprofit his father founded to provide education and therapy services for people with communication disorders. He sees the good it does firsthand, with his kid brother, Edward, and the way his younger sister, Belinda, works as one of the foundation’s speech language pathologists.

Auggie is bisexual, something he realized as a fairly young teenager. He comes out at 16, during one of the family’s gatherings. His mother is interrogating him about his broken wrist and he just blurts it out, mostly to divert attention from his broken wrist and the grounding that he knows was coming. Plus, his family has always been chaotically supportive and he trusts them. 

Auggie falls in love with a man named Ernest Livingston. Ernest is an electrical engineer and also shares some of Auggie’s daredevil ways. They first meet when Ernest brings his nephew to the Hastings Foundation. 

Auggie married Ernest in 2044, when he was 30 and Ernest was 29 (and four months shy of thirty). 

Auggie and Ernest adopt two children. They adopt a three-year-old girl, Nova Eunice Livingston-Basset, and two years after Nova, they adopt an infant boy who they named Amos Simon Livingston-Basset. Therefore, there's a five year age gap between Nova and Amos.

“I did not think I would marry,” Kate admitted to Charlotte. “I was quite convinced your Aunt Edwina would make a grand match and I would be content as her children’s favorite aunt.” “What changed?” “I was compromised,” her mother said baldly. “But compromise alone would not compel me to marry.” “I had no idea,” Charlotte breathed. “But Mama, why are you telling me this now? When did you agree to marry Papa, if not then?” “Because I wish to impress upon you that there is always a choice. It was odd, Michael had never been short of female attention but since he had married he seemed to have more girls squabbling and crying over him than he had before he married.

He loved Francesca more than life itself but he couldn’t help but indulge the pleas of his Newest admirers.

“Noooooo Lottie it’s MY TURN!!!” Caroline called, tears calling down her face

“No Caroline!!! You went last time! It’s mine!” Cried her sister Belinda

“No no no!!!! Uncle Micky stopped with you last time! You got loads of extra time!!!!” Lottie, the three year old, cried at her older cousins as all the boys watched their sisters with amusement.

That was until the youngest of the group toddled in, her hand in her Papa’s. Little Vivi Bridgerton, her mother in absolute miniature, like Charlotte was a mini Kate, Violet was every bit her mother.

Her little blonde curls loose down her back and in her little white dress she looked as angelic as they came.

She had learned to walk a few weeks ago but they had only arrived in London and it was the first time Michael had seen Violet walking and he gasped at her “well I think we have a winner girls! You’re going to have to share”

“Iiickkkkkyy!!!” Violet squealed as she spotted him, dropping her papa’s hand as she made her way over to her Uncle.

She had problems with her M’s and Michael just chuckled as Lottie, who had always been her favourite cousin gasped “vivi nooooooo!”

“Icky Vivi want up peas” she asked with all the innocence of a one year old and Michael scooped her up and sat in the chaise.

“There is more than enough Uncle Mike to go around girls! Come on up and we can have a big group hug” he chuckled as they all ran over and jumped on him.

This was the best sort of female attention, and the fact it infuriated his brother’s- in -law a little bit, well was just a bonus.

Peerages & Titles: how titles apply to the children of peers

[Full list of disclaimers is in the master post but tl;dr is that sources for this information are not consistent, sources may be modern, names are all Bridgerton characters unless in red, and this may be edited/expanded at anytime as my research continues.]

The eldest son of a Duke, Marquess or Earl uses his father’s subsidiary title as a courtesy title, without the use of The. For example, The Duke of Hastings is also The Earl Clyvedon so his eldest son [and heir apparent] is be Earl Clyvedon.

If a Duke, Marquess or Earl does hold any subsidiary titles, it’s common for his eldest son to make one up entirely. He may be addressed as Lord Windsor, despite his father not holding any peerage of Windsor, or the title of Viscount Windsor or Baron Windsor to avoid confusion with an existing Lord Windsor.

A holder of a courtesy title is not a peer, therefore not entitled to sit in the House of Lords. However, until 1999, by way of writ of acceleration, a peer with more than one peerage could enable his heir apparent to attend and vote in the House of Lords while he was still alive—using one of his father’s subsidiary titles. It was introduced in the mid 15th century and was a rare occurrence, only used 98 times in over 400 years.

If an eldest son did not receive a writ of acceleration, it was not uncommon for a new peerage to be created for him. There are examples of this happening where the father is a baron, meaning that he has no subsidiary titles.

Until the 20th century, it was relatively easy for eldest sons with no courtesy title or peerage to be elected to the House of Commons if they still wished to be in politics.

Eldest daughters do not get a courtesy title, because they are not heir apparent.

In the peerage of Scotland, both heir presumptives and heir apparent of a peer use the title/address of Master or Mistress. For example, The Master of Edinburgh. This is not a courtesy title, and the heir of a Duke, Marquess or Earl may still use a courtesy as outlined above.

The sons (and son’s wives) of Dukes, Marquesses and Earls who are not heir apparent are addressed as My Lord/Lady or Lord/Lady, using their first name and surname—though the surname may be dropped following the first use/reference. For example; Simon and Daphne’s son (aside from the heir apparent) would be addressed as Lord Edward Basset. That son’s wife is Lady Edward Basset. This title persists after the death of his father, but because it is considered a courtesy and it is not inherited by his children.

The sons (and son’s wives) of Viscounts and Barons are addressed as Sir, Mr, Madam or Mrs. This is why Benedict, Colin and Gregory are all Mr Bridgerton. To differentiate between brothers, Mr Bridgerton would refer to the eldest son and the younger sons may use their first names as well when required. [Much like the bottom point, about daughters].

The daughters of Dukes, Marquesses and Earls who are addressed as My Lady or Lady, using their first name and surname—though the surname may be dropped following the first use/reference. For example; Simon and Daphne’s daughters would be addressed as Lady Amelia Basset, Lady Belinda Basset and Lady Caroline Basset. If they married a man with any peerage, or courtesy peerage, they would take that rank and title. If she marries a commoner, she retains her rank and title but uses her husband's surname instead of her maiden name. Her husband does not gain any right to a courtesy title/style. For example; if Amelia married commoner William Brien, she would become Lady Amelia Brien, but he would remain Mr William Brien, and their children would not inherit any titles.

The daughters of Viscounts and Barons are Miss (unmarried), Mrs (married to a commoner) or Madam (married or unmarried)

The eldest unmarried daughter of a family is addressed using their surname, and all subsequent daughters are addressed using their first name with the surname optional. This is why it is Miss Sharma for Kate and Miss Edwina or Miss Edwina Sharma for Edwina. Once Kate marries, Edwina should be formally addressed as Miss Sharma.

So let's say that in this au, Kate never went to London and Penelope never had London debut. To help with the family finances Kate set out to become a nurse/governess (I am aware they are two different positions, but just roll with me.) After discovering Lord Featheringtons debts Portia only had enough money to debut one more daughter. After debating she decided to place her bets on Felicity. Neither ever met the Bridgertons.

Somehow Penelope ended up as a sort of apprentice/partner to Kate and the two found a good job within the house of the Duke and Duchess of Hastings. With two of them they are able to take care of the children, Auggie, and Amelia, when they are younger and later teach them as well as any other children the Duke and Duchess may have.

The two get along well with their employers and they have each other so the loneliness that usually comes with their kind of position isn't as bad.

Then comes 1816 aka the year without summer. Things were wet and cold, some of the ton had decided to forgo that season and stay in their country homes. One of those families was the Bassets, who decided to invite the family to Clyvedon for the rest of the season, with possibly taking some time to go to Aubrey Hall.

Of course Kate and Penelope are also at Clyvedon, helping take care of the young lord and ladies.

"Oh Kate, Penelope," Daphne greeted as she walked into the nursery. "You two can take a break for a little while. Just bring the children down to the drawing room, my family will be here soon and I'm sure they'll want to see the babies."

"Yes your grace," Kate and Penelope bowed.

"Thank you-," Daphne cut herself off with a yawn. "Oh forgive me on that."

"It is alright your grace," Kate said.

Daphne fought another yawn as she walked out of the nursery.

Kate and Penelope looked at each other before letting out soft giggles.

"I suppose we'll have another little one soon enough," Kate said as she held onto Auggie's leading strings in one hand and held Belinda in another.

"Good for us, it keeps us employed longer," Penelope joked. She gently bounces Caroline, while her other hand holds Amelia's leading strings. "Looks like you won't be the baby for long young miss."

Kate grinned. "That it does."

The two lead the children down to the family drawing room where Simon was waiting. After that they were temporarily free for probably most of the afternoon if this was like the other visits from the duchess' family. Not that Kate and Penelope haven't really had any more than brief glimpses at the infamous Bridgertons.

After that Kate went to take a walk while Penelope went down to the kitchen for some leftovers cook left since she missed breakfast.

Enter Anthony and Colin.

Anthony had ridden separate from his family as he had to make a stop on the way for business. Unfortunately this also meant that Anthony had gotten caught in the rain on his way. Colin had gotten back just in time for them to leave and had not yet had a chance to change out of his traveling clothes nor a chance to really eat anything. Suffice to say they did not really look like sons of a high bred family.

Kate just happened to be passing by when Anthony rode up to Clyvedon.

Kate had to stop herself from raising an eyebrow at the soaked man who was foolish to ride out into the rain. If she had to guess he may have been one of the tenets. Just as they always did during the first day of guest arriving, the duke and duchess gave strict orders that they are not to be disturbed.

"Excuse me," the man said. "You could you direct me to where Simon and Daphne are?"

Kate was taken aback. She has never heard of a tenet being so informal. "I'm sorry sir, but their graces are not seeing to any business today. The duchess' family had arrived today."

The tenet looked annoyed. "I assure you they are expecting me."

"Sir," Kare sighed, then yelled when he pushed past her. "Sir!"

That's when Kate heard the bell designated for the nurses and governesses. Well fine, she'll just let her employers handle the tenet.

Meanwhile Colin had sneaked down to the kitchen. He was a growing boy after all, and he hadn't eaten all day.

He was surprised to see a cute red down there happily eating an eclair.

"Is there anymore?" Colin asked her.

Penelope jumped, just barely catching the custard that fell. Turning towards Colin she did in fact raise an eyebrow. She has not seen this man before. Penelope could place almost all the servants at Clyvedon by face and she has seen this one. Plus his clothing does not look like anything any of the servants would be wearing. Nor is he looking at her food like anyone else she has met before.

"I'm sorry sir, but this was the only one Cook had set aside. The rest are being served to her grace's family," Penelope said.

The man's eyes lit up at the mere mention of more food. "Really? Oh must show me where they are!"

What was this man? Some kind of interloper? Penelope would rather not show him where the duke and duchess are, but blast. It looks like she might not have a choice. That was the bell to summon her and Kate. Well hopefully if he does follow the duke will take care of it.

Kate and Penelope met at the entrance of the drawing room both of them looking at their partner with a questioning look at the strange man following.

Before Kate or Penelope could stop them the tenet and the interloper both walk into the drawing room.

"Anthony!"

"Colin!"

Oh fuck, Kate and Penelope knew those names. Those were the names of the duchess' brothers, the Viscount Bridgerton and the third Bridgerton. And now among the rest of their siblings Kate and Penelope could see the resemblance.

In the books Daphne and Simon had a daughter first who they named Amelia. In the show they have a son first who they named August but affectionately call him Augie. Back in 2020 and 2021, many book fans were upset that Amelia was genderswapped. But I believe the fandom have grown a bit more open-minded and forgiving towards changes made from the books to the show.

Carrie is the Basset wild child… and the reason Simon started going grey he is sure of it.

She was sweet and placid as a child but after two weeks with her Uncle Ben honing her artistic skills and developing a love of poetry, her attitude on life changed and from wanting to be an artist, by the age of 15, she wanted to be a tattoo artist.

Simon thought she’d grow out of it because she’d wanted to be a F1 driver, a footballer and everything and her passions changed regularly other than her art…

She came from school covered in fake tattoos and that was it… she was hooked…

She started smoking at 15, piercings came and she cut her hair into a pixie cut in her room. Daphne screamed when she saw it.

But they were determined to support their daughter and helped with her apprentice and didn’t baulk or lecturer her on her choice.

She was 16 when she came out to her parents as Bisexual, Belinda had cheered and said Edmund and Amelia owed her money. Confused, Carrie asked her sister what for, Bel explained that they thought she was full lesbian and she was sure she was Bi. Carrie laughed and winked at her sister explaining life was too short to choose.

She opened her own Tattoo parlour at 21 and she has tattooed a lot of her family but her Uncle Ben was her first customer.

She got into brewing her own beer and gin after a joke gift from her uncle Mike of a brew your own beer kit and she made an amazing batch of home brew beer that knocked most of them out. It was so strong and from there her passion grew.

Her homemade sloe gin lead to an eventual New Year’s Eve and a very drunk Grandma Violet…

Mike was very Impressed and offered her a job if she ever got bored of tattooing.

She never learned to drive a car but does own several motorbikes.
