Carl Rasmussen (August 31, 1841 - 1893) was a Danish painter who worked for many years in menial jobs while taking art classes when and where he could. Finally in 1862 he was given a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy, and he graduated in 1866.

Soon after he started traveling, esp. to Greenland where he visited several times. Unfortunately he fell overboard on the journey homeward while painting a marine onboard the vessel Peru and drowned, leaving his wife and 8 kids behind...

The Mysteries of Kirsten’s Swedish Clothing - The Limits of Historical Research

This skirt with an attached bodice might be what Kirsten’s outfit was based on. You might think that since it dates to the 18th century, it is not accurate to what Kirsten would have worn in Sweden. The recorded examples of folkdräkt (“folk costume”) from the province of Småland are very similar, although it seems it was more common for bodices and skirts to be separate pieces. They appear to have similar construction and layering as working class clothing from 18th century England. There is an example of a bodice with rattan cane "boning" which would likely have taken the place of a corset for adult women but other examples from the same time period do not have this.

In the 1850s, even farmers like the Larsons were moving out of the folkdräkt and into more modern clothing. Folkdräkt is documented as being worn for special occasions like weddings and church holidays but made in finer fabrics like silk. The couple on horseback is a bride and groom. The modern clothing is simple, like the plaid dress shown here.

To add to the confusion, the designs of regional folkdräkt became more standardized to make them easier to replicate in the 20th century. Unfortunately, two books that would greatly increase my understanding of what Kirsten and her family would have worn in Sweden are both impossible to find in the United States, and only available in the Swedish language, although one of the books apparently has an English language index. (The books are Kvinnligt mode under två sekel by Britta Hammar and Pernilla Rasmussen, and Underkläder en Kulturhistoria by the same authors.)

Saturday, June 24, 2023, marked the 50-year anniversary of the UpStairs Lounge Fire, the second largest mass killing of LGBTQIA2S+ people in United States history.

Around 7:53 PM on June 24, 1973, an unidentified arsonist (believed to be Roger Dale Nunez), emptied a seven-ounce can of Ronsonol on the front stairs of the UpStairs Lounge and produced a spark. At 7:56 PM, a downstairs buzzer rang repeatedly within the bar’s main room, leading bartender Buddy Rasmussen to ask a patron to investigate. When the staircase door was opened, fire met oxygen, and flames exploded in a backdraft. Decor in the space ignited instantly. Rasmussen, an Air Force veteran with fire experience, led approximately forty patrons through an unmarked rear emergency exit that led them to safety. Other patrons, trapped in a far corner of the main room, attempted to break through the windows, but the windows were barred by iron bars, preventing their escape. Those who could not slide through the fourteen-inch gap between the bars perished in a pile of bodies that New Orleans Parish Coroner Carl Rabin later called a “mass of death.” The fire, extinguished by 8:12 PM burned for less than twenty minutes but claimed thirty-two lives and injured at least fifteen others.

In the aftermath of the fire, some victims could only be identified from their dentist's dental records. One man was identified by his watch. Ferris LeBlanc was identified by his ring. Three men were never identified, most likely, author Johnny Townsend concluded, because "Their closest friends died with them. There was no one left who knew who they were."

In the closet of 1973, the fire outed its victims and survivors alike. The story, front-page national news on Monday, June 25, receded to interior pages by that Wednesday when the UpStairs Lounge was confirmed to be a “gay bar. ” An abundance of locals, including first responders, made crass jokes about "flaming queens" alongside chatter that all attendees of the bar were "hoodlums" and "sinners." Several fire victims were denied religious funerals and burials.

With the indifference of the community around them, the queer community of New Orleans came together: at the conclusion of the July 1st memorial service, everyone was offered the option of exiting through a back door of the church in order to avoid the potential stigma and harassment of attending the memorial. But no one chose this option; instead, everyone decided to face the media and present a unified front to honor those who had died in the fire. Even still today, however, despite being the worst fire in New Orleans history in terms of loss of life, and the second largest mass killing of LGBTQIA2S+ people in United States history, most people are not aware the fire even occurred.

The English title, Land of Mine, is an unfortunate but perhaps irresistible pun. The original Danish title was Under Sandet -- "Under the Sand" -- which lacks resonance with its central theme: the cruelty inflicted by victors on the vanquished. Land of Mine at least picks up on that theme, the patriotic urge to revenge one's country on those who attacked it, as well as indicating the action of the film, the defusing and disposal of land mines planted by the Germans along the Danish coast during World War II. It focuses on the Danish Sgt. Carl Rasmussen (Roland Møller), tasked with training and supervising a company of German prisoners of war who are the ones who do the terrifying work of locating unexploded mines along the seashore. When we meet Rasmussen, he is brutally beating a German soldier who has had the audacity to pick up a Danish flag as a souvenir, so the officers in charge of the land mine detail are fairly certain that he will be no softy when it comes to handling the POWs. It turns out that the prisoners are very young -- barely out of their teens, late conscripts into the German army in the waning days of the war. Rasmussen and the POWs are billeted on a woman who has a small farm near the shore, and who shares his hatred for the Germans, stinting on the food she is supposed to provide the young men. She also has a young daughter, who in her innocence bears no grudge against the men and happily plays with one of them until her mother sends him away. It's a situation full of suspense, of course, but writer-director Martin Zandvliet can't seem to stay away from the obvious plotting clichés. We know that there will be some sort of rapprochement between Rasmussen and his fresh-faced charges. When we see that two of the young men are twins, who have dreams of returning to Germany and using their bricklaying skills to help rebuild their country, we're pretty sure that one or both of them will have to die. The hard-bitten sergeant shows no affection to anyone except his dog, so we're certain that the dog's a goner. We're not surprised when the little girl wanders off into the minefield and has to be rescued by the Germans, causing a change of heart in the girl's mother. And so on to the end of the film, which is supposed to be heartwarming but really feels like a foregone conclusion, a working-out of the movie's moral vision. Forgiveness is a fine and necessary thing, but Land of Mine too often sacrifices the drama for the sermon, just as the intrinsic facetiousness of the titular pun undercuts the seriousness of the film's intent.
