Question: why do people refer to Tobias in Megamorphs 4 as a "quasi-voluntary" controller? I don't have access to my copy right now but I don't recall anything that would imply he had any knowledge of what he was joining/cooperated in any way? Did I miss something?
So I call Tobias quasi-voluntary, because I think — from my read of MM4 — that Tobias is about as voluntary as any "voluntary controller" ever gets. Which is not that voluntary. Tobias goes to a Sharing meeting because Jake's there, but pretty soon he gets sucked into the cycle of love-bombing: "When you attend your second meeting of The Sharing they assign you a guide" (MM4). In Tobias's case it's a guy named Bill, a few years older, who spends every meeting praising Tobias, and talking up how the Sharing cured his depression and being a full member changed his life.
Bill waits for Tobias to say "I want to be a full member." And then he asks if Tobias is sure, and Tobias says "Yes." Bill presses all the way to "You trade a little bit of freedom for a lot of belonging" and gets Tobias to agree a third time. When the time comes for the "ceremony" (infestation), Chapman makes Tobias explain why he's joining, and Tobias does. Three more times Chapman asks, and three more times Tobias says, out loud, that he wants what's going to happen next. Chapman explains why they want Tobias's consent: "We only have problems in twenty-one percent of willing members. And there are... fewer incidents of contested control." Tobias withdraws consent when he realizes they're about to put a slug in his brain, but by then it's too late.
Later Tobias says "Most painful of all was the image of myself swallowing everything the Sharing told me. I had walked, willingly, to my own destruction. At the time I'd seen no alternatives." So is Tobias voluntary? Well, is Chapman voluntary? He agrees not to resist in exchange for Melissa not being recruited, and he keeps his end of the bargain (#2). Not only does he not fight back while there's a yeerk in his brain, but there's every possibility he's one of the people allowing the yeerk to slip out of their brain and then quietly walking to go wait in the break room without supervision.
Okay, but surely the taxxons are voluntary. They chose to ally with the yeerks... Only it turns out their options were ally with the yeerks or starve to death (#53), and just because their leaders chose the yeerks doesn't mean individual taxxons were okay with it (Andalite Chronicles).
But then, we all know Taylor is voluntary. Because she gave up her freedom for little old things like... relief from pain. And escape from discrimination. And basic health care that didn't cost her family their life savings (#33). And she could never change her mind, because she got punished by Sub-Visser Fifty-One for misbehaving (#43).
But Mr. Tidwell's definitely voluntary. He chooses to have a yeerk in his brain even after joining the YPM. Only he was so depressed he couldn't take care of himself when he joined (#29), and probably would have literally died without the yeerks.
Hang on, is Tom voluntary? He spontaneously offers to "be quiet" and "never trouble you again" when Temrash 114 starts trying to recruit Jake (#6). We don't know for sure that Tom isn't hanging out in that same break room after the events of #1, in exchange for Jake not being recruited.
So on. We know the Sharing targets people who are unhoused and/or mentally ill, and that the ones with happy, stable home lives (Tom, later Jake) tend to go unconvinced. You have to be vulnerable to end up voluntary, the series shows, so vulnerable that your whole ability to consent is seriously called into question.

“average yeerk murders 3 subordinates a year" factoid actually just statistical error, average yeerk murders 0 subordinates per year. Decapitations Esplin, who has an andalite host and kills over 10,000 each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted

I know this is mostly a cracky shitpost from the universe where Edriss’ is second human host is called “Jenny Leafs” (sic) rather than “Jenny Lines”, but if I ever get around to writing my “Edriss got hooked on oatmeal & Esplin 9466 the Lesser became Visser One” fanfic, this is an actual plot point, and weaponized.
Yeah well I just talked to the council of thirteen and they said they’d never heard of instant maple and ginger oatmeal

list of fictional kids who could handle/overcome a yeerk invasion (feel free to add more)
-the mystery twins (self explanatory. if they could deal with weirdmageddon as humans they could kill visser three as animals)
-the gaang (it would take them a while though)
-madoka
-jenny xj9
-wordgirl
-as much as i hate to say it, the south park kids would demolish them
-the membrane family, but mainly gaz
-phineas and ferb
-gumball, darwin, and anais (it would take them a total of thirty minutes)
-the powerpuff girls
-ben 10
-morty and summer smith (very on brand overarching seasonal plot material)
-yakko, wakko, and dot (it would also take them a total of thirty minutes)
fictional kids who have a solid fifty-fifty chance of overcoming the yeerks:
-steven universe (i think he could do it. but only AFTER he dealt with the gems. and it would take forever. and if greg universe got a yeerk in his head? it's over. even if steven figured out there was a yeerk in there idk if he has the stomach to listen to his dad cry for three days)
-star and marco (i never finished this show but like i think they could probably do it)
-the belcher kids
-timmy turner
-the cutie mark crusaders
-finn the human
-the ninja turtles
fictional kids who could NOT handle a yeerk invasion:
-chowder lol
-johnny test
-dib membrane alone. that child is not ready for more than zero aliens even if he thinks he is
(i'm mostly just including things i've actually watched lol)

The amount of time I have spent thinking about gender and sexuality in Animorphs....
Gonna preface this by saying that I think the presentation of gender and sexuality in Animorphs is a product of the time they were written and 100% think it would be handled differently today - like I don't think it would be assumed that almost everyone is straight and cis. But anyway.
Gender for the Hork Bajir seems pretty straightforward and familiar. They have the recognition of male and female genders and a pair-bonded child rearing arrangement. No one in the books is getting into granular detail about how exactly their reproduction works, in terms of sperm/egg/childbirth, but it's pretty recognizable to the humans. Same deal with Andalites, with bonus sexism.*
*Something I really enjoy that KAA explored! I wonder if it initially started from a standard male=default mindset - like every Andalite character she showed us for the first part of the series (with the exception of Ax's parents) was explicitly a member of the military, so she made them male without thinking about it much. Then at a certain point maybe she realized that there was no particular reason for them to be male, and worked that into her worldbuilding as another example of Andalites not being such great folks.
Taxxons.....I would have to re-read 43 to be 100% sure, but I don't know that there's any actual mention of Taxxon genders, breeding or family life. (Thank Glob.) Arbron is referred to with he/him pronouns, but he identified as male in his Andalite body, so I'm not willing to draw any conclusions about Taxxon gender or sexuality from that.
The Yeerks is where things really get interesting to me. They are stated to breed by three Yeerks coming together, becoming one, and then breaking into (dozens? hundreds? thousands?) of smaller grubs. Which is so interesting, that the act of reproduction is also the act of death for them! How does that work with regards to who breeds? Is it an honor or is it an assigned duty? Their culture as we see it is highly individualistic; I just can't picture Visser Three deciding to die to propagate the species, you know? Is breeding the end of the natural life cycle for Yeerks? So they eventually choose to die? Or do they automatically get the urge to breed when they are close to dying? Or when population numbers get low, does the Council of Thirteen order a bunch of lackeys to breed/die whether they like it or not?
The fact that there are three Yeerks involved in breeding suggests one of two possibilities to me: either there are three genders and one of each is needed to reproduce, or Yeerks are functionally genderless, and any individual Yeerk has the capability of breeding with any other two. I'd say the textual evidence supports the latter position more.
Throughout the series we get a lot of information about the Yeerks. I don't recall ever seeing a Yeerk identify as a different gender than their host body. The one exception might be Visser One - in Visser, her Hork Bajir body is referred to as being male. However, this is being remembered by her in her current host body of Eva, and she certainly seems to identify as female in the present day of the book. So did she identify as male initially since her Hork Bajir host was male, and then switch to identifying with Jenny/Allison/Eva's female gender?
There is a reference in Visser to any good Yeerk picking up the mannerisms of their host body. To me it seems like gender is a part of that. Like to a Yeerk, the gender of their host is akin to their language or personality- something that the Yeerk will use and mimic to be more successful in controlling them. They certainly pick up the human desire to pair-bond (seen in 8 and Visser), even though there's no real reason why pair-bonding would have evolved for them, given their means if reproduction.
Given that we have multiple first-person Yeerk narratives and never a mention of any gender other than their hosts, I interpret that as meaning that Yeerks don't really have gender, either culturally or physiologically.
It's interesting to contrast the Yeerk way, where they pick up the gender of the body they're in, with the Animorphs view of gender as they morph. They never once identify as anything other than their human gender, even when they are explicitly in morphs that are the other gender.
(I think that KAA was obviously trying to keep it PG with regards to never having an Animorph morph a human of the other gender, because, let's be real, if I was in a relationship with someone of the opposite gender and I had the ability to morph, I would COMPLETELY want to morph each other and feel what sex was like for a guy. Maybe that's just me? But like I do not buy that Marco, for example, never thought about morphing a girl. But that's neither here nor there.)
Thank you for coming to my lecture, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals. Stay tuned for Part 2: Tar Gibbons from Aliens Ate My Homework is an NB Icon.

A couple questions:
1. How do you order the Animorph chain of command
2. How much do you think yeerks can shirk pain off to their host so they can ignore and fight through it
2. It’s mentioned in #41 that yeerks can’t ignore hosts pain, and there are hints that’s true of other sensations (e.g. Edriss can’t stop taking cocaine while using Jenny “Lines” as a host in Visser).
1. The chain of command and the chain of succession in the Animorphs team are two separate things, which is interesting because the chain of command is present during the “ordinary” missions while the chain of succession only comes out when shit goes wrong.
The chain of command is who has more or less informal “rank” within the team.  Jake’s their leader, and Marco is his default second.  Cassie is roughly in third, Rachel roughly in fourth, Tobias in fifth (?) and Ax in sixth.  My evidence:
Pretty much any time the Animorphs divide into two mini-teams, Jake takes charge of one and Marco’s in charge of the other (#9, #15, #31, #51).  When Jake puts Tobias in charge of Marco in #30 (because Marco tends to get reckless around Visser One), they both balk at the arrangement, and Marco ends up calling the shots for their mini-team anyway.
Command tends to flow to Cassie any time the kids are in a new ecosystem.  In #4 (ocean), #25 (Arctic), #11 (rain forest), MM2 (Cretaceous era) and even #18 (Leera), she’s the one that everyone looks to for leadership.
Neither Rachel nor Ax is a long-term thinker, and they both trust Jake more than themselves when it comes to ethical decisions (#22, #52, #18, #26) so any time he starts deferring to Cassie or Marco, they do the same.
Marco and Cassie are the ones most likely to tell Jake he needs to do something different.  Everyone argues with him on occasion, but those two often say outright “we’re not doing that; we’re doing this instead.”  And when they do, the team tends to listen.
Tobias is... weird, as I’ve said.  He has the least respect for Jake, but he’s also the least likely to take charge.  He disagrees with Jake indirectly, with passive-aggressive comments rather than clear challenges.  He’s more than happy to go behind Jake’s back with Rachel or Ax, but never hesitates to follow Jake’s orders when they apply to him.  Ax is clearly the bottom of the chain of command because that’s where Ax wants to be, but in some ways Tobias is outside of it entirely.
The chain of succession, on the other hand, is who takes over each role within the team if any given teammate is down.  It’d be the same as the chain of command in a real military unit, but the Animorphs don’t roll like that.  Jake’s the default leader, and Rachel is his default replacement.  Marco takes over if both Berensons are out of commission. Tobias is marginally more likely to lead if those three aren’t present.  Cassie and Ax both prefer to work alone if they can’t rely on Jake or Rachel, so I don’t know who would lead on a team of just those two.  My evidence:
#29 draws a lot of attention to the chain of succession: Jake falls ill, Rachel takes over.  Rachel’s ill, so Marco takes over.  Marco falls ill (and Ax is already ill), so Tobias and Cassie spend a few minutes passing command back and forth like a hot potato before Tobias falls ill.
In MM3 and #22, no one questions Rachel stepping into Jake’s role the instant Jake dies.  In #29 and #37 there’s a little more debate, but in both cases Jake is gone and Rachel ultimately takes over the team.
Ax has a lot of leadership potential, IMHO, but he’s extremely gun-shy about telling humans what to do about human affairs on a human planet.  Boy drinks his Respect Sovereignty and Destroy Imperialism juice with all four hooves, but staying in his lane often means never ever telling his team what to do.
Tobias is... weird.  Still.  He takes over when he and Cassie and Marco are alone in #24.  He’ll snap out a “run to your other left, the controllers are that way” or a “glide, don’t flap, you idiots!” in the heat of battle, but he doesn’t take command.  The only reason I’d tentatively put him ahead of Cassie is that he does in fact go behind Jake’s back and take command of a mini-team of Ax and/or Rachel on occasion (#3, MM2, #46) whereas we do not see Cassie doing the same.
Anywhoo, I do find it super interesting that the chain of command and the chain of succession are so different — it’s nonstandard, but it speaks to the closeness within the team.

animorphs analysis graphics (1/???)
She sees Edriss at her closest to human. In Visser, she appears to consider compassion, or sympathy, even if she never gets as far as forgiveness: she says “I thought I’d found something decent inside you.” No one else ever gets that close; no one ever sees as much humanity as Eva sees from her; and Eva looks that fragile, thin humanity in the face and says, Kill her. She’s not worth mercy. Eva gets given all the information, the full opportunity to forgive or condemn, and she chooses to condemn.
— @exigencelost ‘s analysis of Eva and Edriss [x]
[ID: two graphics with text. The first is a close-up photograph of the bottom half of a woman’s face. The woman has long, straight black hair. The text is centered. It reads: “She says, ‘I thought I’d found something decent inside you.’ And Eva looks at that fragile, thin humanity in the face and says, ‘Kill her’.” There are semi-transparent red blood splatters behind the text. The second is a gif that has a black background, with abstract red shapes suggesting movement and spattered with blood. The topmost line of text reads: “Kill her”. The names Eva, Edriss, Jenny Lines, and Allison Kim are overlaid across the background. The bottom line of text reads: “Kill her. She’s not worth mercy.” The animated component features a thin, bright red cross-out line. It appears over “Jenny Lines” first, “Allison Kim” second, and the words “not worth” third. When it appears over the word “mercy”, the cross-out lines form an ‘X’ over the word. End ID]
