hadestown hadestown hadestown omg omg omg (i'll mention when there will be spoilers - very much recommend seeing it) went to see this for my bday (my bday was yesterday but whatever) and ive never really been into musical theatre but WOW do i see why people like it now

the set design, costumes, story but most of all the MUSIC GODDAMN was so fucking good, the singing was amazing (madeline charlemange - played eurydice - her voice was so amazing, the vibrato was on point and her growls slayed, they were all amazing tho) a lot of the songs were jazz inspired but one was wild west themed and some of them had really cool extended techniques (especially some funky shit on the violin, it was so cool) and one of the songs had a call and response but the response kept getting longer (ritornello?) i love that one (why we build the wall)

SPOLIERS AHEAD DONT READ ANYMORE IF YOU DONT WANT SPOILERS (go watch it its amazing) ok so hades was the embodiment of capitalism and persephone communism (hear me out) hades was forcing these people to work (mining, building the wall - culminates in that song i mentioned) and later on theres a workers revolution when orpheus convinces them the world doesnt have to be like that, kinda like russia in 1917 and whats gonna happen soon in the uk (i feel like at one point orpheus was adressing the audience when he was talking about this) they talk about building a wall to keep them free (keeping out the poverty) but in reality how does a wall keep you free?? it doesnt, it was hades that brainwashed them to think that and they are still under the shackles of capitalism (or something) until orpheus shows them the light and starts the workers revolution

i could probably ramble about this for hours but i'll spare you, if anyone read this far you slay hope you have / had an amazing day and thank you for reading my rambles, i hope they were coherent

i think the tv streaming model has ruined me because every time i consider rewatching smash i realise it's 20 episode seasons with each episode being 45 minutes long and don't bother

We had a guest from abroad, and as we were walking we showed him the theatre and he assumed it no longer worked. When we said it works, he assumed it just plays movies, not stage plays.

I'm still reeling from and thinking so hard about the “You can do things without me! …You’re so good at it” from Chess to Kate because on one hand I can assume what it means but also what does that mean???!?

#kate clearly doesn't want chess to leave and has her capital i Issues with that #but the idea she's so strikingly independent other times makes sense given her nature but also?? contrasts everything we see in the show #like kate is very much independent in the second act but with chess as well? it's hard to imagine #i love my theatre appreciation class it means i can think more about scripts. unfortunately none of them are watt but whatever whatever #i'm just like this normally anyways #we are the tigers #kate we are the tigers #chess we are the tigers #no one talks about this and it's probably because they're normal and i look into things too hard that may or may not mean anything LOL

a finnish youtuber i was a huge fan of at 14 sat in front of me at the cinema when i saw the substance this week, and this experience cemented my belief that influencers are the most insufferable people on earth and they do Not know how to act in public spaces. like yeah this is not news but fucking christ i had been spared irl before this

Ope consumed my body weight in popcorn at the movie theatre and now feel incredibly ill

#3 drinks and a popcorn came out to $30 which is a sign that nature is healing #I think at least our local theatre has realized that people are willing to buy snacks there instead of smuggling #if they’re not charging an arm and a leg #that’s still a lot but in the realm of movie theatre pricing that’s shockingly low #like i remember at one point in high school a large soda at the concession stand was literally $10.50 with no refill #so they’ve verifiably lowered prices which I did not have on my late stage capitalism bingo card #but I saw beetlejuice beetlejuice with my sister and my parents and it was a really fun time #the tickets weren’t too expensive either #$14.50 #I think they’ve lowered that price too I remember them being $19 in high school #and this was a Friday night so I’m sure matinee prices are even lower #I might be convinced to join their movie club thing where you get a ticket and discounts on concessions every month #it’s literally $11 a month and the tickets roll over if you don’t use it that month #they might get me

ok so admittedly i am not the best person to explain this but. there's a series of musicals all set in the same universe (hatchetfield) and the most recent is nerdy prudes must die which was released on youtube a couple of weeks ago now (??) and it is very very good :)

the other two are the guy who didn't like musicals and black friday and they are both also very good i would recommend 100%
