1: Where in the Thedas is your Rook from? Caius was born and raised in Rivain till his very early twenties or late teens.

2: What is your character's alignment? Chaotic Good absolutely

3: Race and subclass? Human Rogue! 4: If your Rook was a companion, where would they be found? The Rivaini Warden Forts, avoiding going home and 'researching' the forts he grew up in and around as a child.

5: What emotion did they usually pick? Very Purple Rook, but also very Honest/Emotional Rook. Towards the end of the game he became more burgundy bc the angry options just became easier to empathize with

6: What companion are you platonically close with? Taash. They flirted at first, but Caius gradually shifted into the big brother role. Because he's also Trans and Rivaini - he knows exactly what Taash is going through because it's Complicated AF to be a transman in Rivain that sort of idolizes Womanhood.

7: Romantically close with? Lucanis won out, but in truth is Lucanis and Davrin. It's about the Communication besties.

8: Who are they suspicious of? Anyone too nice, or anyone too flippant. Illario REALLY struck a nerve right out the gate

9: Does your Rook get along with their chosen Faction? With the other Ensigns? Yeah absolutely, he's both everyones little and older brother and he's not afraid to befriend the cooks and lower ranks, but also unafraid to challenge the high ranks - earns him friends and enemies that one.

10: Are they proficient in playing any instruments? He likes to think he could play something, he cannot. He can carry a tune though! His voice has changed a lot since he last really sang though.

11: Weapon of choice? He's an Archer before anything else, but his daggers come and go depending on the job. He prefers understated, fine craftsmanship.

12: What is their orientation? Caius is a Nonbinary Man, Bisexual disaster.

13: What are their thoughts on killing? Is it a necessary evil or do they enjoy it? Some people can't be saved, or want to be. Every death weighs on him, even the monsters and beasts. If it didn't, he'd have to stop fighting - you can't kill with no remorse or conscience, then you become nothing more than a husk.

14: What hobbies does your Rook have? He actually enjoys cooking, enjoys Reading, and loves to people watch. He's the sort to sketch things and journal.

15: What NPCs do they like? Which one's do they dislike? He respects the hell of out Ashur and Tarquin, and mourns the fact he could never really get closer because Minrathous fell, he never blamed them for their ire. He's close to Evka and Antoine, got their little 'against the status quo!' squad. He isn't fond of Caterina and Illario, but really likes Viago and Teia. He prefers his deceivers to at least be honest at some point.

16: Do they have a favorite creature in the Thedas? Assan REALLY hit the nail on the head, he's a major Warden fanboy and Griffons are just, COOL! But, otherwise, he really likes Cats. Especially big fat mean cats, hence where he got the nickname 'Calico;

17: Do they enjoy life as an adventurer? He does. He finds purpose and effort in the work, gratified to physically see the difference he can make.

18: What would your Rook be doing if they weren't recruited by Varric? Fighting Darkspawn. He'd just be any other Warden, but he'd probably be doing research with Antoine and Evka. Be the one to do the heavier lifting for the pair.

19: How do you think they'll meet their end? If the Calling still comes around, or if it gets worse, I think he'd hold off until Davrin's caught up as well. He has no intention of dying early, but he's a Warden, and he'll die fighting Darkspawn. If he gets the choice though, he won't die in a cave - he's going to whatever town needs help, and he'll die giving them their homes back.

20: Would they side with Solas or fight him? He starts out resenting Solas. Having heard horror stories about how Solas killed a child (personal timeline lore) and how Solas betrayed everyone...but in the end, he feels so much pity for the man. The Wardens believe everyone can be Better, but he only gives the man One chance to Be Better.

21: What is your Rook's favorite ability? Getting that perfect precision head shot??? Noice. But honeslty, he uses Arlathan's Gifts a lot because those disks flying around are fun.

22: What languages is your character fluent in? Rivaini foremost, which is basically an indentity crisis of different languages (canonically Rivain is the America of Thedas, melting pot) but then Common, and he picked up the Anderfels from Warden work (german, austrian, and etc)

23: What do they do after an absolute crisis? He held himself together for a long time. But the moment the sun rises, Solas is gone, and everyone can breathe? He can't breathe through his sobs. He has to lock away for a week, desperately fighting for his sanity because he can't be a leader if he can't surive his own heartbreak.

24: Does your character believe in the afterlife? It's changed a lot after..everything. He would like, maybe, to be a Wisp. To float around, learning. He thinks being a Spirit of Curiosity would be the best way to come back, if he does at all.

25: What specialization best represents your Rook? Given the options for a Rogue: Veil Ranger, The Antivan Duelist , and Lord of Fortune Saboteur - He chose the Ranger. Doesn't quite have the patience for dueling etiquette and artificing.

26: What animal best represents your Rook? Griffon? Honestly. He's got the Roar, the Grace, and the Heart. He embodies a Griffon, but not of old. He's the Griffon of Arlathan, the protector and friend who choose to fight for others.

27: What was their life like before the events of Veilguard? He's been a Warden for a while, and it's been good to him. He grew up stressed and lonely, fighting for identity in a world that didn't like that... becoming a Warden meant becoming Him. He took the Surname of the Lieutenant that recruited him and let his old rivaini life became his quietly closed first chapter.

28: Is your character the de facto leader of the party? Or do they consider someone else to be the leader? Caius doesn't outright think of himself as the Leader because he's More Than - he tells Solas outright, "Someone needs to do it" and if he needs to step up, he will. Just as much as he'll step back. He doesn't think the Veilguard needs a Leader. No god, king, or leader makes the world - the people do.

29: If you could choose a different faction for your Rook, which one would they have joined and why? If he hadn't ended up with the Wardens, he'd have been a Lord of Fortune. Escaping his village and taking up adventure with likeminded individuals.

30: What's your favorite thing about your Rook? Caius has so much room for compassion. He looks at the wolrd and sees an Opportunity to Learn - it's why he gets on with Emmrich and Bellara so well, but also why he could band together so many different people - he sees the world from angles, from refracted mirrors. He sees People and knows they have unique stories, and he honors everyone's right to their individual story.

listed in tentative order of playthroughs, but after my first one i'll probably have a better idea of which character i really want to play after tess.

thérèse "tess" de riva - human - antivan crows - rogue

- the "do you want me to kill them for you? :)" @ a minor inconvenience friend

- born in orlais; her father was a judge and her mother an anti-imperialist gossip girl

- someone hired a crow to get rid of them; thérèse wasn't supposed to be there, but she came across the scene and the crow ended up taking her with him back to antiva, rather than kill her too (the contract didn't say anything about kids!!)

- basically that "killed the monster, only to find out that they had a kid nearby" rpg staple, except for the protagonist

- trained to be a crow; made friends with some other kids in the same boat as her, until one tried to kill her in order to advance in the ranks. she nearly killed her bestie back. thanks to SOMEONE killing off crows elsewhere, rather than getting rid of the two troublemakers, they were separated and thérèse was taken by the crow who'd brought her there in the first place, training her on the road with him.

- returned to antiva in her mid-20s and made peace instantly with her former bestie, who outranked her by a country mile at that point; thérèse (who was going by "tess" at that point for ease of being hired) was a-okay with this. tess kept a low-profile, taking on jobs that wouldn't make her too important, but became very fond of staying in treviso whenever she could. naturally, the entire business with the antaam marching in there was something she took personally, and she struck out not out of a desire to advance her position, but merely to protect her home.

- and then the backstory blurb happened.

- the "i haven't had a day off in eight weeks" friend

- taken in by the mercar family after his mother, a freed slave, was fatally wounded during her escape attempt. the family's official story was that he'd been a foundling, but they'd been actively helping his mother, caia, in her escape efforts, and honored her after her passing by naming her son after her

- trained in swordplay along with his adoptive siblings, as the family's military standing was reputable and he was eager to follow in their footsteps. when his magic manifested, he was young enough to adapt to it without missing the blade too much, but he's always looking to incorporate it into his battlestyles anyways

- while he loves his family dearly, the knowledge of his origins had always spurred him toward a very specific vision of justice and right/wrong, and he fell into the arms of the shadow dragons pretty much as soon as he was able. he views tevinter as it stands at present as the cause of his birth parents' deaths, and wants to dismantle it, or die trying.

- takes himself very seriously, almost to a comical degree. like, to a batman level of taking himself, justice, and his Brand seriously

dulcea laidir - dwarf -lords of fortune - warrior

- the "hey, watch this!" friend (said ten seconds before disaster)

- her family backed the wrong would-be-king in orzammar, and intentionally fled to the surface to avoid retribution, having previously been part of the warrior caste. dulcea was about 13 years old at the time, so she remembers bits of orzammar, but not enough to miss it with a lot of sincerity.

- while her family members remained deeply rooted in maintaining their yearning for their former-home, while she took to wandering and being enraptured with everything that she could discover on the surface. for years, she worked hard to support them, but one day she caught wind of a trader heading to rivain, and she left in the dead of night to travel with her. her parents woke up to a chest of gold and a silver goblet, with a note simply saying "More where this came from! -D"

- she remained a fish out of water for the entire trip. if she wasn't so good with her own weapon (a hammer she named "finesse"), she'd have been mugged and swindled more times than she could count. eventually, though, she caught the eye of a ship captain who needed some extra muscle for a job he was running, and dulcea was hired on.

- the ship nearly went under during a storm, and she almost drowned because she couldn't swim. at first, the crew teased her about it, but when she started to actually cry over it, they realized how terrified she'd really been and all rallied together to teach her how to swim (wholesome!!!).

- now, she's 110% comfortable enough in the water to do cannonballs in search of lost treasure. as a member of the lords of fortune now, this happens often.

- and then the backstory blurb happened.

castor thorne - dwarf - grey wardens - rogue? warrior?

- the "am i the only normal person here?" friend

- surface dwarf, worked as a stablehand in south reach until the fifth blight rolled around. survived, but hid through most of it and never forgave himself for being a coward while so many tried to protect their home and died.

- following this, he went to amaranthine to pledge himself to the wardens, feeling that he owed someone something. along the way, he met a fellow recruit: an elf named "thorne" who spoke frequently about leaving his clan to become a warden. they became fast friends, and trained together often. neither of them had combat experience, so it took them a while before they were skilled enough to undertake the joining.

- thorne always assumed that castor was a dwarf from orzammar, and he'd never corrected him. the night before the joining, though, castor revealed the truth, embarrassed at his own weakness yet again. thorne laughed, revealing that he wasn't dalish either - he was just a city elf, wishing he could have had a stronger connection to something greater than him. they agreed that, as wardens, they'd both finally have that, and pledged to serve as brothers, going forward.

- castor survived the joining, but thorne, unfortunately did not. devastated to have lost his first brother-in-arms before his service had even begun, castor took on thorne's name for himself, so both their names would be recorded in weisshaupt eventually. has faithfully served the wardens ever since - diligent and reliable, never hiding again.

- and then the backstory blurb happened.

- the "friendly reminder (shares some sorta horror)" friend

- intentionally not going into how he ended up in the grand necropolis as an infant. that's either gonna be the one story that he'll never know, or it'll have to be something that the game itself gives to me, because the big ol question mark that that provides at present is too much fun for me to want to crack open for him.

- he tells himself that he was made inside the tomb, most likely. that the undead just put him all together, bones and then organs, and then skin, and pretended that they found him. that is, of course, ridiculous, and he knows this, but will tell that to you with a straight face anyways. it's as likely a true story as having parents out there who care about him still, after all.

- very much a "child who was never really a child", he grew into adulthood without fanfare and has never really understood why some of the other necromancers have looked at him sadly over this.

- and then the backstory blurb happened

basil aldwir - qunari - veil jumpers - rogue? mage?

- the "i didn't do it" himbo friend

- the son of a tamassran who escaped the qun with an elf that she'd fallen in love with

- his mother had been pregnant with him when she and her love fled, using an attack from tevinter as the perfect opportunity to disappear unnoticed.

-the pair eventually found the elf's clan, and it was only through his faith in her that they allowed her to stay. when her son was born, she took her husband's surname and gave it to the baby as well; they called him "hallan", after the halla (the only other horned members of the clan, aside from them)

- he was raised amongst the clan's children and didn't worry too much that his grey skin and horns made him stand out. he was always able to reach up high for his friends, and he made for an excellent beast to be slain in their games together. he was happy, if not a bit mischievous, and daring to a fault. his mother taught him discipline, and his father taught him to appreciate the beauty of nature and the beauty of a heritage that wasn't really his own, but he valued it as if it was.

- eventually, he encountered the veil jumpers and offered himself as "a noble sacrifice to their cause". he mostly just acts as a distraction, because he's very distracting.

- along the way, he cheekily adopted "basil" as a moniker, enjoying the slight jab at himself, for how the qunari would look at him, and how it was easier for humans to say and accept.

- and then the backstory blurb happened

Aaron Claw - overused his magic and was getting annoyed with a classmate.

Rayan al-Mena - Overused his Unique Magic + a classmate was getting on his nerves.

Elise Page - got blamed for someone else's mess, got mad about it, and lashed out.

Jian-Yu Song - miscommunication and also a stupid classmate.

Aster Nightshade - Annoyed with a classmate, someone ate his cake, and overuse of magic.

Longwei Jiang- overuse of magic.

Caius Luna, Xavi Luna, and Varian Luna - all three overblotted at the same time because they argued among themselves, so there was lots of netative emotion there.

Ester Thorn - overuse of his Unique Magic + lost control of his own emotions.

Xue Long Yang - a build up of negative emotions (self-doubt, doubts about friends, feeling as if some things were his fault, not telling anyone he had problems.)

For Caius!

The Fool: Where did Rook's journey begin? What were they doing before joining the Veilguard? - Caius was an active Warden Ensign, and he did a lot of investigative work like Evka and Antoine, but more so in Evka's role. He would do the physical labor and hunting down for experiments and investigations.

The Magician: What are Rook's thoughts on Solas? Do they change as the story progresses? -Caius started out believing Solas was a heartless bastard. Someone capable of killing a child (personal lore). Someone capable of dooming the world. By the end? He was just....sad. He saw a lonely, heartbroken, and abused spirit turned man.

The High Priestess: Which does Rook obey more: their head or their heart? -Caius obeys both, but this of course means his head. He puts logic to what he feels, he tries to be mature but he still gets yanked around by a compelling enough emotional burst.

The Empress: What does family mean for Rook? -It's.....complicated. Found family means the world to him, like any self respecting Transman, you know? His actual blood kin live in Rivain, and he hasn't spoken to any of them ever since he left for the Wardens. He....doesn't think they'd even recognize him, outside of his obvious bithmarks.

The Emperor: What does Rook's leadership style look like? -Everyone not only has a voice, but deserves to be heard. He accepts that his role is to be the actionary - he takes everyone's opinions and their insight and he breaks it down into as objective a choice as he can. Doesn't make the most popular man, or the most hated one.

The Hierophant: Is Rook religious? How do they feel about the religious organizations that impact their life the most? -Caius grew up in touch with Spirits and the free to try style of the Rivaini. It's a very mix bag style of religion, and he tries to be really open minded! But this whole Veilguard situation.... he doesn't trust the ancient texts to be in favor of the modern man, type scenario. He peoples faith in people, not old hymns.

The Lovers: Who is your Rook's most significant relationship within the Veilguard? How do they help Rook feel seen and understood? -Davrin. Yes, Caius and Lucanis are lovers, and yes Caius and Taash are DEEPLY similar (right down to their damn ethnic cultural coding) but Davrin - another man who understands how little time Caius feels there is. How precious, and how unfair, life is when trying to do the right thing. Everyone else he of course cares for, especially Lucanis! But Davrin as another Warden is his confidant when it coms to the scary shit, and he treasures that.

The Chariot: How does Rook fight? What are their preferred abilities and damage type? -Caius is a Rogue in that he prefers the tools of the trade, rather than has the absolute agility for the work. He likes the impersonal touch of distance, but his daggers are prized weapons. He will put himself on the line, but values having the option to hang back to mid or background range.

Strength: What gives your Rook courage? What inspires them to keep fighting? -Caius became a Warden because it felt noble. It felt like purpose. So when things get so absurdly bleak, he falls back into that noble art of 'someone has to do it'. He may not want to, or be able to, but he can try or find someone better than him. He wants to help people, he wants to give people a chance. He doesn't think it's being some knightly character - but he still fights like one. Because sometimes people need to see that someone else cares.

The Hermit: When Rook is alone with their thoughts, what do they think about? Is solitude a blessing or a curse for them? -Caius isn't perse haunted, but as a Warden he does have that background radio channel of the finite. He's aware of the taint in his blood, he's aware of the weight on his shoulders. He holds a veyr brave face when in battle and public, or even just with his team - but in private, he lets himself feel the pain. Thinks it'd be an injustice not to cry for the lost, or be angry for the injustice. So only in private, does he let the guard drop and feel everything raw and intensely.

The Wheel of Fortune: Describe an interesting character moment for your Rook. What made this moment stand out to you? -The Griffons. Caius grew up playing in old Warden Forts on the coast, being inspired by the few scraps of notes and books he found, but the imagery of the Griffon, this brave animal that just was good.... getting to see the first Griffon alive? It was the brightest most thrilling proof that he was in the right place at the right time.

Justice: How does Rook feel about the circumstances that led to them leaving their faction? What does returning feel like? -Caius is a bit infamous with the younger Ensigns and Initiate's for being a sort of role model - don't talk shit if you can't take shit back, but also don't let someone punch down on you. He knew damn well it'd get him into trouble, again, but the other option was to let innocent lives die, and to betray what he felt meant to be a Warden. He has no love lost for the Warden Commander, but also he despises people that get too complacent with the laws and rules.

The Hanged Man: What does Rook do when their hard work doesn't pay off? How do they cope with failure? -He puts all those big feelings into a bottle, he ties it to his belt and carries it with him through battle, through victory or inevitable loss. Then when he's alone, he throws so bottle as hard as he can and when it shatters so will he. Then, he makes new bottles. He uses what he learned from the defeat to temper the glass, what he learned in technique to weave ropes around the glass to hold it better. Every loss is a lesson.

Death: What part of Rook do they need to kill to become the best version of themselves? -Caius wouldn't like this question. He would honestly be upset if someone told him they killed a part of themself to survive further along. Which maybe, is the fault within. He wants to be actualized, he wants to have the purpose that makes sense. A life that's just...existing...may never be enough for him.

Temperance: What does Rook do to deal with the stress of their situation? -Talk. Talk, yap, laugh. He finds company and he settles in for telling stories, listening, playing music or singing off key. He needs people to destress, because being alone means his head gets a little too loud.

The Devil: What type of demon is most likely to target Rook? Why? -Oh this is tricky. Maybe something in the same vein of 'Obsession'. He lingers on things, on the past, trying to be better means he doesn't let some stuff go. He isn't one to be tempted by desire, or vengeance, but maybe something promising retribution could sway him.

The Tower: How does Rook respond to unexpected catastrophe? -To quote, "We survived before, we will again" but honestly, he's quick on adapting. He's got back up plans, he got maps, ledgers, and takes stock of inventory. He is not a man to go into anything without prep - so when shit hits the fan out of left field, he maybe gets stressed but he buckles down and locks the hell in- tells himself to feel big about it later.

The Star: When things get dark, what gives Rook hope? -There is always something that makes someone happy. Be it sunrise, be it the first Griffon in four hundred years, or ancient tomes, or dancing wisps, good coffee, giant lizards-- people have joy inherit to their soul and knowing that even the worse of us can be happy? It means there is always something to fight for. Even if he can't see his own happiness, he knows he can help protect someone elses.

The Moon: How does Rook's past impact their values? Does their past come with any biases or blind spots they have to account for? -Caius has some Big Feelings about his past, but it doesn't exactly hold him back - it instead gives him an edge, or so I like to think. He knows what life is like in Before's and After's. He knows the struggle of being a man, a woman, and inbetween. He has perspective, and he tries hard to use it to be compassionate, which makes him a better person. He thinks everyone deserves to have their own opinion- but maybe some people really shouldn't get to voice it so vocally...

The Sun: What is Rook passionate about? How do they fuel that passion? -People. The World? Caius wants to see it all, to understand it all. Only as an outsider, a bystander, or witness - he'd be thankful to see how someone else does it. He loves People, loves their quirks and their weird curiosities. He loves how impatient some people are, or how steady others can be. Caius believes in the rich tapestry of Life and he will diligently experience it as much as he can, traveling and reading and just quietly watching.

Judgement: How does Rook approach difficult decisions? How do they cope with the consequences of those choices? -Caius will use his heart in regards to his own issues, but with other people he shuts it down and uses his most objective and logical choice. EX: Treviso or Minrathous... he feels horrible he couldn't save both. But to him, Minrathous is a literal war state with experience of siege for over three hundred years, Treviso is a merchant canal with no army, no experience, and no help coming... it was a clear choice to him, but the weight is one he carries. In the end? It's almost a relief to know that both cities would have been changed, but he at least saved Treviso from the worst...he saved one of them.

The World: What does happily-ever-after look like for Rook? Is it attainable, or just wishful thinking? -There will come a day, that Caius can no longer fight the Calling. A day where he will be plagued, and reminded of the trade off he made. Until then, he wants to travel. He wants to take the good fight to the world, to help people, to live amongst them. If he gets to have two handsome men at his side, well that's one hell of a bonus. It's a relief, sadly, to know he won't be alone in the end. That Davrin will be there with him. And it's a joy to have Lucanis till then, showing them both how to find pleasure and joy in the darker parts of life. So, until the end, he will seek the world, and offer himself to it. He will leave behind a better world for him having been in it, and he will one day die fighting for it.

Cannot emphasize enough how American Rivain feels once you break it down, this is a purple Rook through and through. He got the autopsy scars when he completed his official ensign training for the Wardens and got his first pay to chop off the extra chest tissue - because to him (he/they), the day Caius was born, is the day someone else died. What, if any, oc, do you enjoy thinking/writing/talking about the most? Is there any special reason they stick with you so much? Do any parts of them come from yourself or the world around you/your culture?

(Just want to give you something oc related that's nice, I like hearing about ocs and the thought that goes into them!)

Ester Thorn. He is my favorite and the first I made for this fandom. I just love him because he is an eccentric fairy who loves all things sparkly and shiny. He also collects lamps eventhough he only really needs one light source.

Aside from him, another favorite of mine is Xue Long Yang. Originally, Xue Long had just started as a joke character I wasn't going to use seriously. But overtime, he just grew on me and I developed his character more. As can be seen by his now extensive family.

....which has some more additions I need to update eventually.

I also love the Luna triplets (Caius Xavi and Varian). These boys are how I can show my relationship with my siblings are. And that is to be absolute menaces to one another, once in awhile teasing each other, but still loving one another in our own way.
