Rocks recently exposed to the sky after being covered with prehistoric ice show that tropical glaciers have shrunk to their smallest size in more than 11,700 years, revealing the tropics have already warmed past limits last seen earlier in the Holocene age, researchers from Boston College report in the journal Science. Scientists have predicted glaciers would melt, or retreat, as temperatures warm in the tropics—those regions bordering the Earth's equator. But the study's analysis of rock samples adjacent to four glaciers in the Andes Mountains shows that glacial retreat has happened far faster and already passed an alarming cross-epoch benchmark, said Boston College Associate Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences Jeremy Shakun

- Welcome, Japanese archaeologists, to a new installment of the land of the rising sun in which I will explain to you what the tsuyu is, having said that, make yourselves comfortable and let's get started. - What is tsuyu and what does it consist of? Tsuyu, in hiragana つゆ and in kanji it would correspond to 梅雨. This corresponds to the summer months in Japan: May to July, you have probably all seen the film Tenki no ko, by director Makoto Shinkai, in which this phenomenon can be seen very well, to give an example. In these two months, huge downpours of water fall in torrents, which for some people will be a pleasure and for others a torture. What is it like for you, do you like periods of rain? - I hope you liked it and see you in the next posts have a nice week.

Climate of Kadalia
Tumblr media
Kadalia, despite it's relatively small size, is very diverse climatically. 21 Köppen climate types are found there, from Af (tropical rainforest) to EF (polar ice cap). Since Kadalia is located in the Southern Hemisphere, it's northern parts are the warmest and southern ones are the coldest.
Kadalia's southernmost region, Sejuk, is dominated by frigid tundras. Due to close proximity of Sagastan it can become extremely cold during winters and barely gets mildly warm during summers. To the north, around the ice-capped Besar Mountains, warmer "austral zone" is located, with moist austral rainforests and "beech taiga" west of the mountains and dry semi-deserts and steppes east of them. Eastern coast has summerwet precipitation pattern. A few spots in the west have Cfc rather than Dfc climate.
Even more north is the area dominated by Dfb warm-summer continental climate; steppes and temperate forests are located there. In the east Dfb is replaced by Dwb. Northern coast of Sea of Sejuk is semi-arid, and in the west, the Dege Peninsula, mild Cfc/Cfb is most prevalent. Dege coast is the wettest part of Kadalia. Inland Dege is more continental. Hpt-summer continental is absent from Kadalia.
To the north, the mountain range divides the climates of west and east coast more drastically. Eastern Kadalia turns humid subtropical, summerwet at some localities. West coast, on the other hand, becomes winterwet mediterranean and then arid, with a large desert existing at the northern half of Voay Peninsula. Finally, Tanana Peninsula is tropical, with it's west coast dominated by Aw and Am and east coast being Af.
Such varied climatical zones cause Kadalia to be extraordinarily biodiverse.

"What the oil industry doesn’t want you to know", July 25, 2024
Uncover the oil industry’s decades-long campaign to discredit climate change science regarding the danger of fossil fuels. -- Throughout the 1980s, oil industry reps discussed the dangers of burning fossil fuels, acknowledging the risk their product posed to the future of humanity. However, instead of warning the public or pivoting towards renewable energy sources, they doubled down on oil — and launched a decades-long campaign to discredit climate change science. Stephanie Honchell Smith digs into Big Oil's tactics. Lesson by Stephanie Honchell Smith, directed by Sofia Pashaei. TED-Ed

May Zeus and Poseidon, Gaia and Aeolus, have mercy on the souls who have been claimed or marred by hurricane Helene, and may the corporations responsible for the earths decline, and with it, their deaths, never know peace before they die, when they die, and long afterwards as well. To all my Hellenists, polytheists, nature witches, and other good people who have lost people or homes to this storm, don’t stop fighting for our planet, don’t stop fighting for your lives, don’t stop fighting for your homes. We can’t fix climate change entirely, not that we know of, but there’s still time to hold responsible those who bore it upon us. Never forget to curse the names of Blackrock, of Exxon, of Chevron, Shell, and so many others. Do not let them or their ceos know peace, and don’t stop fighting for a better, safer world from the rape of corporate greed. Love y’all, stay safe. 💚

absolutely LOSING it over what minor to pick PLS help and doing a bunch isnt an option unfortunately T_T
to give some background im currently a biochem/physical sciences (an odd concoction of physchem + stats + math) double major with an option to do a minor on top of that
current future plan is to get a masters in nanoscience/nanotech. but that is very much subject to change.
id highly appreciate some advice/unfiltered life stories from people who were in similar situations of being able to add extra words on diploma ahahaaaaaaaha 🦠💉🧫biology🦠💉🧫
-with my current course load i can basically get this minor through doing one singular class
-the con is that im already doing a biochem major so it feels a little bit pointless
-quite a few fourth year seminar courses im interested in, ex virology
📶💻⚙️stats📶💻⚙️
-smartest option on the list as machine learning and ai are very big tools across all fields im interested in (it will probably be more useful than my physical sciences major in the short run T_T)
-gives me an actual theoretical background bc rn my usage of neural networks is very much inputting random weights and hoping it works core
-im going to be doing a lot of stats in my computational physics class though so this may be a little repetitive but idk.
🌏🗺⛰applied climatology🌏🗺⛰
-if we are being super fr im more drawn to climate/environmental/field adjacent work rather than medical research
-but the way this continent is going i feel as if all of the climate job programs may shut down soon
-if im really feeling very antsy about this i can get a volunteer research position at a computational climate lab and achieve similar experience/stepping point
-parents are extreme climate change denialists and may not be too happy that $$$ are being spent on this one
would be happy with any stories that ppl have to share about the importance of minors to their life choices!!

Enbata or galerna is a weather phenomenon of the coast. Wind suddenly changes to WNW and it gets really strong. The consequences of this are: sudden drop of temperature, rise of pressure and humidity, the state of the sea gets worse, and sometimes there are also dark clouds and rain. There are two kinds of enbatas: typical and frontal. Typical enbatas usually happen on sunny, very hot days, in days when there's almost no wind or it's mainly from the south. Galerna starts to get into the coast of Bizkaia moving towards Gipuzkoa and in the meantime it gets stronger; when it arrives to the shores of Lapurdi, it disappears. Typical enbatas usually happen between May and September. Most of them are little, but sometimes when wind changes, it can reach up to +90km/h, even +120km/h. In just 10 minutes, temperature can drop 8-10ºC and the sea can turn from being completely calm to be rough. Enbatas are dangerous because the weather change is very sudden. That's why it's important to follow the recommendations of getting out of the water and leave the beach, and also fold every sunshade and beach umbrella.
Source
Most visitors haven't witnessed a galerna in their lives and may think it can't be that bad. It is. The change is dramatic in an incredibly short period of time, and you'll surely see us Basque people running home because we know what's coming. So if you're visiting and through the speakers it's said an enbata is coming, leave the beach as fast as you can: these storms come mainly in the evening, and probably next morning will be sunny, so don't be sad to leave the sea. Don't risk yourself!
We're expecting one today at around 20h, let's hope it's a little one!

Why misinformation about wildfires is spreading and how to combat it, June 17, 2023
As unprecedented wildfires continue to spread across parts of Canada, so does misinformation about them. Whatever the catalyst for any particular wildfire, the science clearly shows that climate change is making wildfire events more frequent and extreme, yet some media outlets and individuals are denying this reality for ideological and financial reasons, Michael Mann, director of Penn Center for Science, Sustainability and the Media, told CBC News.
