a brief note on American Exceptionalism

I find the conversation about American Exceptionalism extremely boring. I don't ask my students about it, I don't bring it up in class, I don't care.

But I will say this: this is something I have picked up in my travels, and I present it to you, the internet, to put into your pocket. Carry it around with you, and retrieve it as needed.

If a European ever says to an American something like "the United States is not special," the affect of this will often be that they are inviting the American to come off the pedestal and just be a normal person with everyone else. If only that were so.

Sometimes that may be their meaning, but surprisingly often, you may, on their behalf, insert the following qualification: "The United States is not special because Europe is special."

Europe could be Europe. Depending on the narrator, it might specifically be the United Kingdom, or Scotland, or England, or Ireland, or France, or Poland, or Switzerland, or a specific city like Amsterdam (even a German might secretly be thinking it in their heart of hearts).

They won't admit this, but I promise you it is what they are thinking in almost every instance.

14. What little things remind them of each other?

They are SIMPS!! Anything and everything jsdgbsjg But Jackie has this cologne that smells like oak, ginger and incense and it tickles Graves’ brain. And Jackie’s favorite color has always been blue but it’s been ramped up to 110 because of Graves’ eyes 🤡

19. What values do they not share? How do they reconcile those differences?

Jackie joined the CIA because he was a victim of someone who played too fast and loose with the rules and put his life on the line. Graves started Shadow Company because he was tired of being told to wait for orders or until they were given the green light to move, and as a PMC, he gets to make his own rules (within reason.) Shepherd himself said that Shadow’s rules of engagement helps them cut some red tape. In his mind, Jackie knows that all Graves wants is to do the right thing, that’s why he has his own set of rules, but he can’t ignore his personal feelings about it either. They somewhat come to a silent compromise. Jackie’s free to step out and distance himself with Shadow’s activities as needed
