PWHL 2024-2025 Primer

It's that time of year again folks. PWHL starts on November 30th.

The sections of this primer are: What is the PWHL, Where can I watch, Rules/League Structure, Official league pages, journalists to follow, and an introduction to each team (what they did last year, who's on the team, notable players, you should root for them if you..)

What is the PWHL?

The Professional Women's Hockey League was created in 2023 and launched in January 2024. It is currently the sole professional women's hockey league in North America.

Heading into the 2024-2025 season, the PWHL has six teams: The Toronto Sceptres, Boston Fleet, Minnesota Frost, New York Sires, Montréal Victoire, and Ottawa Charge. Each team plays 30 regular season games per team. You can find the full season schedule here.

Where can I watch?

Disclaimer; We don't have an official 100% confirmation on the American and non-North American ones yet, just reports from journalists who I do deem trustworthy. I will edit any changes and highlight them in bold if necessary.

On Television/Streaming

Canadian fans will have games on TSN and its affiliates (such as TSN+) primarily, with select games on CBC and Prime video.

French broadcasts of Montreal games can be found on RDS (18), Radio-Canada (6) on ICI TÉLÉ and ICI TOU.TV

Full streaming/television schedule for Canada

All fans not in Canada are available to stream on the PWHL Youtube regardless of location (so if you're "in market" there's no black outs like there is NHL games)

Last year regional games were held on: Bally Sports North in Minnesota, NESN/NESN+ in Boston, MSG/MSG+ in New York, Sportnet Pittsburgh has carried select games. Not 100% confirmed this will be the case last year. Even if your regional sports network carries it, however, you should be able to access it on Youtube in America

What are the rules? The League Structures?

Who makes the playoffs and what do they look like?

Please keep in mind that with such a young league, it's possible this will be tinkered with.

Each game is worth three points: 3 for a regulation win, 2 for an overtime win, and 1 for an overtime loss

Last year, the PWHL had 4 of the 6 teams make the playoffs. The number one seed got to choose their opponent between the third and fourth seed.

All series were best of five series, the two semi finals and then the finals.

Rules

If you are an NHL fan looking to jump in, here are the differences in the PWHL. The rulebook is also here.

Bodychecking is allowed in the PWHL, so long as it is done in an attempt to play the puck or gain possession. While women's hockey has always been physical, bodychecking at this level is fairly new, the SDHL in Sweden started to allow it just in 2021 and then the PWHL last year, so refs and players are adjusting in how they're going to draw the line between legal and illegal. This is also not the case in international competition, so it is a little different than the olympics or worlds if you are used to watching those.

The PWHL has a "jailbreak rule" which means that if you are shorthanded and score, the penalty ends.

In shootouts, a player can go as many times as they'd like.

New this year is the "No Escape" rule where players of a penalized team are required to stay on the ice to start the penalty kill.

Coaches can challenge delay of game puck over glass penalties.

Hits to the head, headbutting, and grabbing an opponents helmet strap, throat protector, or hair is an automatic major penalty and game misconduct.

Who are the Boston Fleet?

The Boston Fleet were last years runner up in the league.

Their roster can be viewed here, with updates to be expected in the next few days as training camp cuts and contract being signed, the waiver period starting for teams to sign players that got cut from other teams training camps, and final rosters are made.

Notable players: Hilary Knight (captain), Aerin Frankel (Star goalie), Alina Müller (Swiss hockey star), Hannah Bilka (first round pick this last draft.)

You should root for this team if: You like defense-first hockey, strong New England college hockey connections, rooting for the youngest ice hockey player to win an olympic medal (Alina Müller), a player who got a custom outfit for pride night (Jamie Lee Rattray), Jewish hockey icons (Aerin Fankel), and players who are also podcasters and make a lot of tiktoks (Lexi Adzija and Taylor Girard)

Who are the Montréal Victoire?

Who are the Toronto Sceptres?

The Sceptres were the first place team in the PWHL last year.

You should root for this team if you: love all the Team Canada players who grew up outside Quebec and also the coaches (all but three players are Canadian and many have played internationally for Canada, the coaching/management also largely from team canada and shares stylistic similarities), are interested in Nursey Nights (Sarah Nurse's collaboration with Black Girl Hockey Club during Toronto Sceptres games!), want to root for the other league favorites, love noted pancake enthusiasts (Kali Flanagan), or if you're more on the savory side, love a hot dog enthusiast (CJ)

Who are the Ottawa Charge?

The Ottawa Charge finished fifth in the league last season

You should root for this team if you: Have an interest in Czech players (Mrázová, Vanišová, Tejralová), you like podcasting players (but gay this time), enjoy a team that regularly updates their youtube channel and does a fan fest and has some of the best player created content, like a team that is not afraid to make bold roster moves

The Minnesota Frost are your inaugural PWHL champions!

You should root for this team if you: Have a lot of midwest pride and like teams in the WCHA, value speed when watching hockey, like players with unconventional paths to stardom (Hensley, who played at Lindenwood in college and made team USA only after college finished), want to root for the ultimate playoff sicko (Michela Cava, who has 4 championships across four leagues, two finals MVPs, and is over a point per game combining all playoffs), like franchise cornerstones who are besties and call each other 'the dog to their cat" and vice versa (Heise and Zumwinkle)

The New York Sirens finished last in the PWHL last year

You should root for this team if you: want to see a team really build itself up from the ground floor, as theres a lot of roster turnover this year and a new coaching staff, with a lot of exciting draftees. like a team that has a little more physicality/grit. want to maximize the number of crossovers with other professional sports teams possible, like the nickname pizza rats. Want to enjoy some of the best mic'd up content (Roque)

ᯤ expects it to be like a normal football game at first. that is, until you explain the rules of rocket league - that there are basically no proper rules at all ᯤ he’s actually kind of appalled that you have to play one to four aside instead of eleven, and each match is only three minutes long ᯤ “offside! did you see that? that was clearly offside!” ᯤ (you, trying to stifle your laughter) “ren… there is no offside…” ᯤ he keeps playing it just to make you laugh but quits after two weeks ᯤ preferred game mode: hoops (because at least it’s not soccer he’s defiling)

ᯤ loathes the game with all his heart. his gaming reflexes are pretty decent but he thinks the game is stupid and an insult to soccer. (“you're never going to be able to play soccer with cars.”) ᯤ regularly challenges rin to 1v1s. rin never refuses and seeing his brother lose so spectacularly fuels sae’s ego ᯤ he got twitter and insta and tiktok just so he can clown the game. his angry rants on car soccer rack up hundreds of thousands of views in mere hours. rocket league reaches out to him for a sponsorship deal. sae’s manager makes him say yes. ᯤ preferred game mode: he hates the game, didn’t you know? if he had to choose though it would probably be classic 3v3. b-but it’s not like he likes it or anything!!

Jealous Hits Hard - Jack McBain

Summary: Y/n gets accused of being a puck bunny which sends Jack into a rage.

They were fine that morning.

Actually, they were more than fine. They were laughing in bed, Y/n tangled in Jack’s arms and the duvet as he kissed her awake, hands warm under the comfy blanket, teasingly trailing along her spine. The kind of morning that felt like forever could start there and neither would complain.

He kissed her temple. She stole his toast. He tugged her into his lap when she reached for the coffee pot.

Easy. Soft. Comfortable.

“You’re coming to the game tonight, right?” he asked as he tied his hoodie strings lazily.

Y/n grinned, barefoot in his oversized socks. “Actually… no. I was thinking I’d stay in. Watch from here. Maybe order some junk and yell at the refs from the couch like you do.”

Jack faked a betrayal. “Wow. Ditching me for food and imaginary arguments.”

She cupped his jaw, thumb brushing his cheek. “I’ll be wearing your jersey, though.”

That shut him up real fast.

“Okay, that helps.”

She laughed into his chest. “Go score something pretty.”

“Go miss me,” he whispered against her mouth.

He left smiling.

The game was a tough one from the beginning. Carolina always brought that out of them: aggression, jaws clenched, a constant edge of something just about to snap.

And it snapped in the second period.

Jack skated toward the bench when one of the Hurricanes’ wingers - cocky, too-smug-for-his-own-good - chirped something as they passed.

“She finally scored lucky with you, McBain. She used to text me, y’know.”

Jack turned his head, heart thudding.

The guy smirked. “Tried real hard. Told me she liked guys with strong hands. Typical puck bunny. Guess she had to settle for you.”

The words sliced deeper than Jack wanted to admit. That nickname. Puck bunny. That accusation.

He didn’t even hesitate.

Gloves off. Fist flying. Nothing but red behind his eyes as he grabbed the guy by the collar and shoved him into the boards, fists landing hard and fast. Refs screaming. Teammates rushing in to help.

He barely heard them. Just that player’s voice again and again.

Later, in the locker room, silence buzzed around him until Guenther sat beside him on the bench.

“You wanna tell me what the hell that was?”

“He said she used to message him. Said she tried to get with him. That she’s just another puck bunny.”

Guenther exhaled slowly. “Did she actually talk to him?”

“She never told me anything.”

“That doesn’t mean it’s true, man,” Keller said. “You know how some of these guys talk. Just trying to mess with your head.”

“But what if it’s not?” Jack snapped, louder than he meant. “What if she did and I’m just the idiot she ended up choosing later?”

“You really believe that?” Guenther challenged gently. “After everything she’s been with you through?”

Jack fell silent. He didn’t. Not really.

“She’s not like that,” Keller added. “You know that. Come on.”

Jack sat there, tape unraveling in his hand. He’d known Y/n long enough to know she wasn’t chasing jerseys. She chased him. His sarcasm. His sleepy good morning kisses. His dumb laugh when he got too excited about breakfast sandwiches. She never asked for anything from him.

Still, the shame was already sitting heavy in his chest.

And she wasn’t at the game.

Not in the stands. Not at warm-ups. Not watching him when he looked up during penalties. The first time since they started dating that she wasn’t there.

His stomach sank. Suspicion rising.

Back at home, he opened the door slowly. She was curled up on the couch, the TV still playing post-game interviews. His jersey hung off her frame, and when she saw him, she blinked - cautious, quiet.

Jack didn’t waste time.

“Why didn’t you tell me you talked to him?”

Y/n froze. “Who?”

“That Carolina guy. Said you used to text him. That you wanted him before me. That you-”

“What?” Her voice cracked. “Jack, I never- he messaged me. Once. Like over a year ago. I blocked him when he kept going. He said something gross, and I didn’t want you to get upset.”

“Well, I am upset,” he said, voice tight. “Because I heard about it from him, not you. And then he called you things I can’t unhear.”

She stood slowly, arms crossed. “So, you believe him? A guy who probably calls every girl who ignores him a slut just because he’s got nothing else going for him?”

Jack was quiet.

“I didn’t tell you,” She whispered, “Because it didn’t matter. Because I didn’t want to drag trash like him into what we have. I didn’t want you thinking I ever wanted anyone but you.”

The silence between them stretched long and heavy.

“I was so mad,” he said finally. “And then I realized I wasn’t even mad at you. I was mad at myself. For letting someone else get into my head. For not trusting you enough to know better.”

Her shoulders softened.

“I’m sorry,” he said, stepping closer. “I shouldn’t have snapped. I shouldn’t have let it get to me. I should’ve come to you first.”

She let him hold her. Her cheek pressed to his chest, the way she always did when he was worn out from games, from life.

“I hated that you weren’t there tonight,” he murmured. “I kept looking. Even after everything.”

“I didn’t want to watch you fight again. Not like that,” she said quietly. “It scared me.”

He kissed the top of her head. “Come to bed with me?”

She hesitated.

“Not like that,” he added gently. “I just… miss you next to me.”

She nodded.

Life was great. Your team won last year's NCAA championship, and against all odds, you guys were headed into this year's Sweet Sixteen. 

Life was great. You're going into your senior year, your last year of playing with your favorite people. You've gotten close to all the girls on the team, and they've essentially become your sisters. You're favorite, above all, was your girlfriend, Mackenzie. 

Life was great, and it was about to get even better. You and Mackenzie were talking to several WBNA, and both of you were slated to be within the top five picks. You guys may end up across the country from each other, but you'd make it work because this was your dream.

Life was great. So why the hell did it feel like a lie every time you said it?

First Person POV

I hop around lightly, bopping my head to the music blaring from my earbuds. I shake out my arms, pulling them across my chest to stretch. I sat on the locker room bench, dropping my head and closing my eyes to focus on breathing. I could feel a presence sitting next to me, but I ignored them until I finished my exercises. 

I open my eyes and pull out my earbuds, looking toward the new presence. When I see it's Mackenzie, I smile slightly, "Hey you."

"You alright?" She asks, nudging our knees together. 

I soften, nodding, "Just nervous, I guess." I shrug. 

Mackenzie scoffs, "Unlike me, this isn't your first Team US selection." Her tone sounds joking, but it still has that underlying bitterness I've come to associate with our conversations. I ignore it and shrug.

"Selection doesn't mean anything if you can't bring home a win," I tell her, frowning. 

"Would you relax? This is only for gold medals and participation trophies." She snaps at me. 

I roll my eyes, standing. "Can you just leave? I need to focus."

Mackenzie scoffs and turns to leave, mumbling under her breath. I ignore her, which seems to be a theme these days, and return to stretching. I stay like that until Coach comes to collect us. I don't acknowledge Mackenzie as we begin walking toward the tunnel, my mind only on the game that's about to happen. 

I jog out of the tunnel when I hear my name called. I wave to the crowds in the stands, then run down the line, slapping hands with my teammates. I join the line, greeting the rest of my teammates. Once the introductions are finished, I get into position for tip-off. 

Tying my hair back and getting low, I watch intently as the ref tosses the ball into the air. I grin as the ball is batted in my direction, catching it and taking off toward the basket.

Caitlin and Paige sat side by side, watching the game. When they heard you were selected for the team, they knew they had to get tickets. You were everything they wanted to be as a basketball player, not to mention you were fucking hot. 

"Dude fucking look at her go," Paige nudged Caitlin, pointing toward where you just made a tough layup. 

Caitlin nudged her back, "I see her," She mumbled, not taking her eyes off you. 

In fact, neither one of them had taken their eyes off you since you came out of the tunnel. You were magnetic, electric, and just plain fun to watch. The entire stadium seemed to roar for you, and you basked in the attention readily, sending winks and kisses into the crowd. 

Only one thought was going through their mind as they watched you: I have to have her.

Such a good episode! Not plot-heavy, just a silly episode. I'll gladly take it as my late birthday present. And it's great to have Swag back, kinda was half-expecting Chris to just pop out.

I've said this once and I'll say it again: I wouldn't mind if the rest of the year is just filled with goofy episodes. After all, we just came from WOTFI and we do need a bit of a break so the Team could work on the next arc. (From the looks of things, we might get goop!4 *cough cough*)

Loved the bits of animation and Mario's expressions as always.

Now, I know there is some talk about the SMG4 Crew/Mario Does Things being on hiatus and merging with the Saturday videos. If you can even call it that. Personally, I don't mind it. I completely understand if doing 2 episodes per week is a lot for the Team to handle, though I do wish they would give an explanation for it. I think the best solution would be for the Team making an announcement of the change, the reasons behind it, and how it may be different from the regular Saturday episodes. Also make it clear that "hey, the title says this so it doesn't impact the main storyline".

Anyway, it has been overall a pretty funny episode and I quite enjoyed it! Now, if you excuse me, I'm gonna cry my eyes out watching the rest of Arcane Act 3 and bring that angst to the next episode concept :)

My headcanon is Enot is a star ally, and learned copy abilities to use for stupid reasons (mostly to impress) so...

My art challenge to you is this:

Enot/Inv/Sofanthiel (your design of choosing btw) gaining a copy ability (of your choice) from anything IN Rain World! Iterators, Creatures, even the slugcats??

The rules are simple. This isn't Smash Bros logic. It HAS to be a copy ability FROM the Kirby series! Meaning for example:

Pole Plant gives Whip!

NOT Pole Plant gives Pole Plant.

The point is to think creativity with the things you choose and it's result!

BONUS: if you REALLY wanted to go the extra mile... Other Kirby game GIMMICKS ARE allowed such as the Robot Mechs from Planet Robobot and Copy Ability Combinations from Kirby 64! IF IT FITS WHERE ENOT GOT IT FROM, use your research!

TL;DR copy Ability designs from Kirby but applied to Enot and where they might've gotten it from! Use the copy abilities as image/design refs and apply it to our freakish scug friend.

ABOUT THE CHARACTERS:

This is just for those that will be drawing from their own imagination (or just want to know more)!

Master Hua / Lin Meixiu

Former Goddess of War. In her human life, she used to be a general, who got gravely injured during war and decided to spend her last moments with the people, leading to her hearing how everyone was grieving losses or dying from injuries, cursing the war, the rich and the generals themselves. A strange man saved her - the (then) God of War - and appointed her as his disciple. She trained under him and after his demise, she became the new Goddess of War, with everyone praising her strength and intelligence. After the Great Heavenly War against the devils, Goddess Lin Meixiu concentrated on trying to protect peace, so no more wars would ever happen. Her companions, the other Gods, took in disciples after that, yet she was the only one who refused any disciple, stating that the best God of War is self-made and only by being strong enough to defeat her can anyone hope to replace her. This angered a student who desperately wanted to become her disciple, to the point where he'd train every day and challenge her every year - but he would always lose. He and his friend (who turned out to be the son of one of the devils she killed in war) hacked a plan to get rid of all the current Gods and replace them. Their plan was successful, and after watching all of her brethren die, Lin Meixiu was prepared to join them, but (because of her great inner strength) she survived, injured and weak. Instead of returning to the Heavens, she stayed in the mortal realm and lead a simple life there.

Xiao Shuilong / Guo Xifeng

Her true form is that of a dragon, but she has successfully cultivated a human form. When she was little, her dragon village faced a great disaster. The Heavens blamed the dragonfolk so they sent the Goddess of War to investigate and kill them. When she arrived, however, she quickly understood the situation and saved the dragons, instead. Before she left, she performed a dance for them, as a gift to the young hatchling of noble blood. The dragons then swore their undying loyalty to her. When Guo Xifeng grew up, she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming the Goddess' disciple, so she headed to the heavens to sign up as a student. She won every competition and caught the eye of all the Gods, who allowed her to choose any God she wanted as her master (assuming that God agreed to it, as well). She instantly asked for Goddess Lin Meixiu, but was informed of her passing. During her moment of shock and horror, she was appointed as the disciple of the current God of War, instead. Every day, she would ask about her Goddess, but no one gave her a truthful answer about her passing. One day, long into her training, she overheard her teacher discussing the matter of Lin Meixiu's death, in which she found out the truth. In a fit of rage, she decided to avenge her Goddess by murdering the two Gods, but she was defeated and sent to the dungeons. There, the devil's son poisoned her with his demonic energy and she went mad, turning into her dragon form and destroying half of the place before being defeated again and sent crashing down to the mortal realm, heavily injured and with amnesia.

THEM

The injured dragon was found by a woman, who helped heal the dragon enough to give it a human form and drag it back to her home to further heal it. When the dragon lady woke up, it was obvious she had lost her memories. The strange woman introduced herself as an ordinary flower spirit named Hua. She named the dragon Xiao Shuilong, since she was found in the waters outside. Although Hua wanted to continue living her life, Xiao Shuilong was determined to retrieve her memories, so the two of them started investigating her origins. Every so often, the demonic energy in Xiao Shuilong's body overwhelms her, making her go crazy and turn into her dragon form - but Master Hua found that with dual cultivation, she is able to suppress demonic energy and bring Xiao Shuilong back to sanity. This might have heavy consequences later down the line... The rest you'll just have to read when the novel comes out 😉

2. A piece your proud of and why

It definitely has to be the short Tenma/Guriten comic I made. While there are little things I wish I did differently or could redo I'm still really proud of finishing a comic with this much detail! It's the most ambitious mini-project I've done. I'm really proud of the backgrounds especially since I rarely put much thought into them but I really wanted to get the familiar settings right and recognizable! But also I'm just proud I actually finished it. I have a terrible habit of dropping a lot of comic ideas so this was a huge feat.. hoping this will help me dive into more!

8. Most challenging character to write or draw

To draw, Tenma. Idk what it is but his hair especially is a STRUGGLE to draw for me in my style. I have to more frequently go back and check that I got it right. Also my comfortable style is pretty... Soft? So I'll have to use ref to make sure I got his features right when I feel like I'm getting too far away from his signature physical traits.

9. A work from another creator you keep coming back to

Margot Ferrick's Half Gold / Half Dung has been occupying space in my mind the second I got that book. It's a collection of fromsoft drawings and I got it especially for the D/Rogier pages. I sort of cheated with this one because I couldn't pick just one work from Margot because all of their D/Rogier drawings have such a beautiful and honesty and raw emotion embedded in all of them. Something about how they draw that pairing gets me so emotional and leaves me wanting more. I truly aspire to convey even a fraction of that beauty in my own art one day! 16. Something interesting you researched as part of the process

Oh man I WISH I had more interesting research for the things I made, I rely far too much on posing and expression over story ;_; I mostly just looked up a lot of Monster things, especially Tenma's bedroom! But I did enjoy researching what name to choose for yuriten Tenma! I settled on Kazuko since it was a popular enough name close to her generation~ it's fun seeing how names change over decades, especially from different regions!

I'm going to start making my first ever cosplay soon, so I'm looking for some tips!

I'm hoping to thrift as much of the outfit as I can but I'm guessing I'm gonna have to alter a lot.

But of course I have to choose a character with so many details. . . (I may simplify)

Anyways, any tips for this character? If you wanna look into him more it's Martin from Rune Factory 5 but I have refs all around

I love to see that you are doing Rune Factory cosplay!

That said, some parts of this will be very easy to thrift and modify, and others will need a little creativity and perhaps sacrificing of accuracy. I'd suggest something with fewer armor details for a first cosplay, but that's still doable with some work.

I'm coming at this from the angle that you are thrifting due to both skill level and budget.

From the top:

The grey shirt will be quite easy. Find a white or light grey ribbed shirt or sweater, cut off the sleeves and sew the edges so they don't fray. If you got a white shirt, check the fiber content -- I'd recommend a natural fiber like cotton -- and dye it to light grey. Use the cutoff sleeves to test the dye.

If you can't find a sweater with ribs, you can get one without the ribs and sew with a twin needle to fake it.

The vest is going to be difficult to get from a thrift store and alter due to the shape. You MIGHT be able to get a blazer or vest in the correct color and alter it, but that would probably be more difficult than making it from scratch.

If altering: remove the sleeves. Cut off the lapels and the collar. Cut open the front to the correct shape, and add the side dart to fit it, as well as fitting from the side seams.

If making: Alter a pattern to have the correct front opening shape, do a mockup, and take it in to fit.

Either way, you will need to sew on the brown leather portion and then line the vest. You can add the straps yourself by sewing them out of the same fabric as your vest.

The apron is easy -- simply take a rectangle of fabric, hem it, and sew a strip of fabric onto it so you can tie it around your waist. For the pockets, I'd do patch pockets and glue on fake rivets (painted googly eyes, anyone?). The zigzags can be done just with topstitching.

For the pants, you can buy the widest leg pants you can find, paint on the stripes, and take in the bottoms. You can use the excess fabric you cut off the length of the pants to create the cuffs.

For the armor, look through our website for armor tutorials -- I'd recommend foam for budget reasons.

Good luck! This will be a challenge to thrift most of, but with some mods, you can probably get something close enough.

My God, finally someone said it.I have seen how many blogs do challenge after challenge, and each one is harder than the last or with a lot of process, I feel that instead of helping people enter the void they make them stagnate, why make something that is so easy look super hard.

They should support the idea that the void is entered by affirming and that's it, that's all.

exactly, i support everyone and how they choose to manifest, but people also need to understand these hard challenges aren’t necessary. they’re not helping you get into the void quicker. the only thing that will make you enter the void quicker are you and your thoughts.
