What has been happening in the world of motorsports?
I probably forgot a lot of stuff since I took too much time to post it, but the roundup is under the cut. All mistakes are my own!
Drivers and teams
All teams will have a shared launch event in London for next year, all drivers are confirmed to take part in it and there should be famous names like Madonna and Justin Bieber (who is funnily enough blacklisted from Ferrari after repainting his against their rules hehe) also Max already stated he would rather be sick that week than be included
Update there is slight backleash from fans because it sold out very quickly and then tickets already get resold for much higher price
Also Ferrari already announced their own launch event in Maranello and all Italian fans (or fans physically in Italy) that buy tickets to their museums can be entered into the giveaway for tickets to get there
In 2025 VCARB should be named Racing Bulls
They should also be using some parts from RB20 (I think suspension?) on for Las Vegas which should speed them up
Dan Fallowes left Aston Martin’s position of technical director after Brazil
Also Aston Martin scored a new partnership with Puma for 2025
According to FIA’s newest controls Red Bull didn’t use the front bib to alter the ride height between quali and races so there was no cheating from their side
Antonio Fuoco will do a junior FP1 session for Ferrari in Abu Dhabi in Carlos’ car after Ollie can no longer be considered as junior (he drove 3 races and the rules specifically state no more than two to be considered junior)
Nico, Este and Carlos has been cleared from their teams to do Abu Dhabi post season tests for their new teams
The same cannot be said about Lewis but the date when he will go to Maranello for the first time has been set already, as have been the details of him driving f1-75 since only old spec is allowed outside of texting and filming days
To nobody’s surprised Alpine will use Mercedes PUs from 2026 onwards (it should be a 5-year deal as of now and since it ramps up the value of the team I expect them to start looking for a buyer after 2026)
Inaki Rueda (yes, THE race strat head from Ferrari that we made petitions against) joined Audi under Binotto (he replaces Zehnder who will move into a different position in the team)
Red Bull accused certain teams that acquired their engineers and mechanics over the years from cheating with tyres by inserting a small amount of water in them to help cool them down and Pirelli responded that they found no evidence for this so far (also red bull thinks so because they were the ones who tried to find a way to cheat with this but weren’t successful SO FAR)
James Vowles mentioned how after all the heavy crashes, with only 3 races to go and a small budget, it will be difficult to bring parts to Las Vegas which caused a few ill-minded articles about no Williams in Vegas BUT the truth is they might bring in old specs and with no spare parts but they will be there
Merc is preparing a special goodbye livery for Lewis for Abu Dhabi (and you can be a part of it if you sign up on their website and get chosen)
Audi (or Stake because it will be funnier what I say next) is selling a stake in the team to Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund
Recent interviews with Toto (a motorsport podcast and the new motorsport book) show him as a pretty big loser because he spoke about Lewis mentioning that Sainz Sr told him about the move in Abu Dhabi 2023 and he texted Fred who left him on read and he also said that Lewis saved him some trouble hinting that they would need to get rid of him because of… *checks notes* lack of cognitive sharpness since everyone has shelf life??
Williams will add more yellow color to their Vegas livery for Keeper sponsorship
Silly season
Sauber confirm both Valtteri and Guanyu are out of the team at the end of the season and their 2025 driver line up is Nico and Gabriel Bortoleto (who untied the relationship with McLaren where he was on loan)
There are growing speculations (almost confirmed tbh) that Val could become Mercedes’ reserve driver
There are also MANY speculations about Franco: Horner visited Williams’ motorhome and they rumoredly offered to buy him for 10m and Williams said no unless they come up with a bigger check (Briatore is also looking at the possibilities of hiring him which would put Jack Doohan aside after he signed the deal with them for next year)
There are rumors Checo could get replaced next year, there are ones he will keep the seat and that he will bring more sponsorship money (choose your fighter)
What happened in the sport recently
Toto Wolff was missing from Brazilian GP
To celebrate Senna, Brazil had special pole award with Brazilian colors, special top 3 caps for the podium in yellow and green and with “Senna” at the back and Lewis drove Senna’s McLaren as the honorary citizen of Brazil
McLaren said the WDC was never their priority, and they always went for the constructor’s title after Brazil where they made Oscar let Lando in front twice in the same weekend (el oh el)
Little hats off to Fernando (it’s not really news but he deserves it), his back pain was so bad in Brazil he couldn’t even get out of the car afterwards, yet he decided to finish the race for the mechanics that worked to get the car repaired for the race after he crashed it in qualifying the same day
Women in motorsport and juniors
Alex Powell became Italian F4 rookie champ for 2024 I thought that is very neat
Rafaela Ferreira becomes another confirmed member of F1 Academy’s 2025 line up and will be driving for VCARB (she is the first female race winner of the Brazilian F4 Championship)
The 2024 F1 Academy champ (so most likely Abbi Pulling) will get a fully funded GB3 seat with Rodin for 2025 and 20 paid days of testing in the car before the season
Callum Voisin will stay with Rodin in F3 for 2025
There is rumor (which I wouldn’t believe so far) that Briatore is interested in Franco Colapinto and would like to set Jack Doohan’s contract aside for him
Dino will be racing for DAMS in F2 for the rest of the season to replace Juan Manuel Correa (yes but also nooooo)
With Jack confirmed for Alpine 2025 (for now at least) there are speculations of Paul Aron possibly becoming their reserve driver since the current TP of Alpine was also his boss in Hitech
Max Esterson will finish the season for Trident in F2
There is a RUMOUR for now that Roman Staněk could have a deal with Invicta in F2 for a full season seat next year (please and thank you)
Thomas Bearman (yes, Ollie’s baby brother) became first confirmed British F4 driver for 2025 (he will be racing with Hitech since he already had two races with them)
Chloe Grant is leaving the world of single seaters but wants to explore other racing options
Hailie Deegan will be driving Indy NXT in 2025 with HMD Motorsports
Richard Verschoor is switching to MP Motorsport after leaving Trident, meaning Denis Hauger is out of F2 for the rest of the season (he will move to Andretti in Indy though)
Nikola Tsolov (my arch nemesis) became the newest part of Red Bull junior academy
Roman Bilinski will be Rodin’s F3 driver in 2025

Fia, rules and future of the sport
Honda got fined 600k for engine budget cap breach (incorrectly filled out documentation) and Alpine got fined 400k for engine budget cap breach (late submission of the documentation)
GPDA made an Instagram account and put up a joint statement/an open letter to Bey Sulayem mentioning swearing, jewelry and underwear rules and urging the president to change his tone when talking to and about the drivers and be transparent about the use of money they get from all the financial fines as it is unclear as it stands now
FUNNILY enough, Sulayem who is biggest voice calling for lack of politic gestures and speech from all sport figures in F1 congratulated Trump publicly on his elections campaign
Domenicali said to be ready for the news very soon which should be linked to the rotating calendar for European races he couldn’t stop talking about for a year now (after Monaco extended its contract it could be Spa and Zandvoort and also potentially Monza and Imola)
Oh, also he said that Argentina is among the candidates who would like to get added to the calendar
Race director Niels Wittich was fired from his role unexpectedly (according to him, he only got told on Tuesday morning) and he will be replaced by Rui Maques from Las Vegas on
Paolo Basarri also left the role of FIA compliance officer (and yes, he was most likely fired as well)
Monaco will stay on the calendar at least till 2031 after extending their deal, the date will be moved back to the start of June starting from 2026 (happy pride to all the non-straight non-cis chirlies out there we stay winning) so it will no longer clash with Indy 500 and the new deal includes higher hosting fees (of course)
Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei leaves his position in the lead at the end of the year but will continue as an adviser (they are apparently restructuring so let’s see how it goes)
Drivers will have cooling sets for extreme heat races from 2025 onwards (when FIA proclaims the race as extremely warm one that is)
The rookie sprint got a green light from all teams but they will need some preparations to make that happen so they will aim to have it ready for 2026
Also there should be gender neutral wording in the FIA rules starting with 2026 onwards
Ohh and! If a car cannot start the race, the grid should now be brought closer

Arthur Leclerc’s team Scuderia Baldini won the Italian GT championship
Kinda not my playing ground but: Norman Nato will be driving for WEC Jota Sport team (they partnered with Cadillac tho, also he will be teammates with Jenson Button)
Joseph Loake drove Aston at Silverstone as his prize for winning Autosport Young Driver of the Year (and apparently his time was pretty good?)
Jak Crawford became Andretti’s reserve driver for Formula E
REMINDER MACAU GP THIS WEEKEND (before I forget :))
Another thing I am not really following but I just learned Nascar works in playoff system until 4 people stay (Joey Logano won for those who wanna know!! Also, the guy with most points ended up p5 WHAT)
Logan Sargeant did a seat fit with Meyer Shank Racing Honda and will be testing with them next week as well
Seb is in talks with WEC next year with Porsche (probably for Le Mans only tho)

Car fucker fun fact of the day: Bugatti W16 mistral set a new open roof speed record of 453.91 kmph
Las Vegas is apparently struggling to sell out the tickets for the race so there are many exclusive offers and sales (also apparently, they are giving away a lot of ticket packages to influencers)
Ferrari partnered with Gladiator movie producers so the main actor (Paul or Pedro I forgot I am sorry) went to Austin with them and on the other hand Charles and Carlos went to the premiere
Daniel and Max played padel which is something I would normally not mention on my blog even at the gunpoint but apparently a 13-year-old kiddo beat them (which makes it funnier that they did good when max was partnered with Charles that one time so I am automatically ranking him highly above most other drivers and you cannot stop me)
Carlos was at Maranello this week and the Scuderia clubs (are they still called that?) threw a little goodbye party for him with cake and a little plaque
McLaren will have a little fashion show with Abercrombie in Las Vegas
Speaking of Vegas, they partnered with Snoopy and made a special edition merch only available in shops there
Kit Kat became F1’s official partner (which is sus when they have publicly been Checo’s sponsor for years now)
Wait ok this rumor is so funny I need to add it: apparently there are rumors at Norwegian gossip websites that their princess could be dating Franco
Max was on some charity sim racing and apparently his car made fun of Lando, so people got into a lot of discourse
Ollie will be at Autosport Internation Show at NEC in January
Damon Hill is leaving Sky Sport after 13 years with the team
Yeah help, did you see Pierre has told kids in a podcast that him and Charles got asked for a threesome/polyam by some fan once????????

Marcello Gandini’s cars were made to stop the traffic. The Italian designer, who has died aged 85, created supercars for the super-rich, and such exotic machines as Lamborghini’s Miura and Countach, Alfa Romeo’s Montreal and Maserati’s Khamsin were guaranteed to draw crowds of admirers when parked outside the grand hotels of Monaco, Rome or London.
As the chief designer of the Bertone company, he also worked at the more modest end of the market, creating the little Autobianchi A112 and the original version of the Volkswagen Polo, and restyling the British Mini for the Italian Innocenti firm. For those wanting a miniature supercar, there was Fiat’s two-seater X1/9, a striking little wedge with its four-cylinder engine mounted transversely behind the cockpit, mimicking the location of the Miura’s mighty V12.
Gandini designed for the space age, renouncing the smooth curves that defined the aesthetic principles of his predecessors. To him the Miura, which first appeared in 1966 and which many consider the most breathtakingly beautiful car ever made, was a flawed compromise. “The audacity was made acceptable by the sweetness, by the flow of the design,” he said. “Nobody rejected the Miura. There was immediate consensus. Even more than it deserved. I was at the beginning of my career and I didn’t have enough autonomy to be able to do exactly what I wanted.”
The Countach, altogether more extreme, even outlandish, was closer to his ideal on its unveiling in 1974. Sightings on the streets of London gave rise to the rumour that the width of its huge tyres made it the only car in the world that could not be wheel-clamped by parking wardens.
“For me,” Gandini said, “it represented the dream. It took years before it was totally accepted. Some people liked it straight away, but most, including journalists, took a long time. So much so that it remained in production for 17 years.”
Born in Turin, Gandini was the son of a pharmacist who, after the arrival of five children, had abandoned his first career as a classical composer and conductor. It was hoped that Marcello would become a concert pianist. There were piano lessons from the age of four, continued when he went to a Salesian boarding school at eight. But as a child he dreamed of cars and when, during his days as a student, his parents gave him the money to buy a Latin textbook, instead he spent it on a book called Motori Endotermici (Endothermic Engines) by Dante Giacosa, the great designer of the highly successful prewar Fiat 500 “Topolino”and its 1950s successor, the ubiquitous Nuova 500. His course was set.
At the age of 25, Gandini approached the celebrated Turin coachbuilder Nuccio Bertone, who gave him a job in the design studio. Soon he would take over as the firm’s chief designer from the prolific Giorgetto Giugiaro, who had drawn up the Maserati Ghibli and various handsome Alfa Romeos before leaving to start his own business.
Sometimes Gandini seemed to exist in the realm of the “concept car”, prototypes that explored new ideas without restraint, displayed at motor shows in much the way that Parisian couturiers produce extreme designs for the catwalk. The four seats of the unique Lamborghini Marzal, for instance, were upholstered in silver leather, while its bodywork and fittings made use of a hexagonal motif. The famous vertically opening “scissor doors” of the Countach were first seen at the 1968 Paris Motor Show on Alfa Romeo’s one-off Carabo.
Gandini was said to be responsible for around 200 designs. Among them were two mid-engined classics of the 1970s, Ferrari’s Dino 308 GT4 and the Lancia Stratos. The dramatically wedge-shaped Lancia won the world rally championship three years in a row between 1974-76 in the hands of Sandro Munari and Bjorn Waldegaard, while Munari also won the Monte Carlo Rally three times in a Stratos.
A car, Gandini believed, was not a work of art – “but it has in common with art the ability to generate emotions”. He played down the significance of his innovations. “I didn’t invent penicillin,” he said. “These are just ideas that came to me.” After leaving Bertone in 1980 to set up his own studio, he worked on many projects, including industrial and interior design.
The father who had wanted him to become a classical pianist finally overcame his disappointment at Marcello’s choice of profession when he was taken for his first ride in a Miura. “Only then,” his son said, “did he understand that I knew how to make other notes sound – those of engines.”
Gandini is survived by his wife, Claudia, with whom he lived in a restored abbey at the foot of Monte Musinè, outside Turin, their son and daughter, Marco and Marzia, and three grandchildren, Lucrezia, Costanza and Pietro.

WIP Wednesday
Adding to my Thunderbirds fic with OC Lieutenant Tamara Fielding & Jonesy (both firefighters who work with Chief McCready). The fic is written completely out of order (my brain refuses to be anything but chaotic!)

Tam set her coffee down on the countertop of the front desk and dragged an office chair towards her.
God she hated paperwork, especially during the winter months. Maybe she could shred the whole pile...create a fire in the foyer - anything to thaw out her frozen hands. Then again, arson, as a rule, was somewhat frowned upon within the firefighting community. Killjoys.
Tam cradled the quickly cooling coffee, attempting to leech the remaining heat from it.
"You gonna drink that or buy it dinner?"
"Oh I'd take it to bed with me if I could, but I've somehow gotta make your numbers look good so Chief McCready doesn't fire your ass."
"Sounds like an easy day to me. I am, after all, Jonesy... the living legend."
Tam arched a brow as he flexed
"Hmmm...those weren't the words I was thinking of."
"Well I'm not sure you can use ruggedly handsome in a report?"
Tam took a sip of her coffee.
"I've known cats with smaller egos than yours."
Jonesy grinned.
"So why's Chief got you hooled up here anyway? I miss my partner in crime. The probie ain't bad, but I want my work wife back."
Tam took an elongated slurp of her now-iced-latte, before the phone mercifully rang.
"Hold up, I've gotta take this."
Jonesy gave a mock salute, winked, then headed in the general direction of the lockers.
"London Fire Brigade"
"Guess who?"
"Scott?"
"Guilty as charged!"
"How...err...how are you? Sorry, I wasn't expecting it to be you. Is everything okay, I mean, is there a situation we can assist with?"
"Oh! No, it's just a friendly call. I've asked EOS and John to cover any incoming calls to the station while we chat."
"That's...erm...thanks?"
"So! In answer to your earlier question - I'm well. Bored as hell, stuck doing paperwork, but you know what they say...no rest for the wicked!"
"I'm not sure anyone in your family really fits that description."
"Honestly? Even after Gordon switched the letters around on your keyboard?"
"That was him?"
"Like I said, wicked."
There was a brief pause.
"How's everyone else? I don't think I managed to catch Virgil before I left."
"Ah yes. Tyre factory fire in Madrid. To be fair, he's not one for goodbyes. But yes - the rest of the family's well. Kayo, I think, is missing the female company already as she's being proper ornery today. I think Alan's gonna have to game standing up as she kicked his arse good n proper sparring this morning."
Tam chuckled despite herself.
"Poor Alan."
"Anyway, just thought I'd drop you a line to see how life back at the station was going?"
"Oh. Well...s'been okay. Chief McCready has me on desk duty today thanks to the whole surfboard incident. Told her my head was fine, but, yeah. Here I am checking fire alarms, fitting car seats and making coffee. Life in the fast lane..."
"Hey, don't knock it. I've spent the day crunching numbers."
"You love numbers."
"Yeah, not these numbers though. Hey! We could swap? You do my Tracy Industries calcs and I'll brew the coffees?"
"Sure, I mean, only if I get to work in your office? The London drizzle and concrete doesn't quite stand up to your sea view."
"Deal! I'll bring One around as soon as I can suit up!"
"Oh, and I should warn you...don't drink the coffee. It's the cheapest instant sh*t they could find...and it's decaf."
"Ah now, that may be a deal-breaker you see..."
"Damnit"
"Yeah. Can't be pulling all night rescues on weak wanna-be-coffee."
"You wouldn't cut it here then Commander...better stick to your paperwork."
"Touché! Anyway...I better head off and let you get back to it. It was nice hearing your voice. Maybe we can grab lunch whenever I'm next in London?"
"I'd like that."
"Great, I'll get John to locate the nearest McDonald's for us."
There was a click as Scott hung up.
Tam chuckled.
"Jackass."

LONDON - Travel Poetry
I touched down at Stanstead at seven a.m.
The got the train into the city, and thus we
Passed the provincial towns in the Metropolitan
Area, where around an extra 6 million people
Live, which technically aren’t part of the
Great capitol. … Lots of people I know totally
Hate London. Whenever I go there I’m
Astounded by it’s sheer scale and mania,
And, I’ll admit, I always reap exhilaration when
I visit. … I got off at Liverpool street and
I went wandering about. I went to see
William Blake’s grave. Which isn’t in a proper
Cemetery, per se: it’s quite an odd grave in
That it’s just off the street, and built over with
Concrete. Then there is just his name,
With his bones somewhere underneath, and
I remember the immense sound of drilling nearby:
As some men were working on a building
Site close by and it was as if 21st century
London was nothing like anything in a
William Blake poem. After that I found the
Nearest subway station, and went down
Into the tunnels, with their toothpaste-white
Tile walls and their rocket-launch echoes.
As I’m always a bit slow when it comes to
Public transport, I had to ask this Irish couple
If I was waiting for the correct train coming.
They indeed confirmed that I was in the right place.
So I said to them, “Thanks. I’m always a bit
Of a numpty when I’m riding the metro.”
And the Irish man said to me, “Oh, it’s all right.
You speak English fine.” And I blinked.
I didn’t want to point out that I was from
Edinburgh, Scotland, as didn’t wish to offend
Him, but, I suppose I was heavily bearded
At that time – and most folks don’t suss me
As Scottish when they see me.
Through the oldest underground routes
In the world I flumed. I went to Hyde Park
And sat there for a while, watching the civilians
Walking their dogs, and it made me wonder
How wealthy you would have to be to live
In this metropolis; the same time as I watched
The crystalline outlines of the skyscrapers
On the horizon. Those images that bespoke
Immense wealth, international prestige.
That night I was staying with my friend who
Lived near London Bridge and so I headed
Over there, walking down towards the Thames.
It was crazy walking in that central part
Of the town where almost every street name
Had some connotation that you knew from
Hearsay or songs or culture in general.
Everywhere was famous. This was where
The plague happened, where the great fire
Happened, where the great fire broke out;
This was where the Blitz happened.
Nearly 70% of the city was burned down
In 1666. And, during the Blitz, around
43 000 civilians were bombed and killed
By the Luftwaffe planes; which was half of
Britain’s civilian toll for World War II;
Which made one in six Londoners homeless,
And destroyed at least 1.1 houses throughout
The town. And, none of those facts had killed
London. This was the place where
Bill Shakespeare wrote, performed and directed
His plays. It was where Pete Townshend was
From, where Charles Dickens form world –
‘twas a place that’d changed the world.
I got to London Bridge, and crossed it,
Watching the thick, soupy water down below,
That raced with pumping menace. It was crazy
That the Thames wasn’t in the top 100 longest
Rivers in Europe. And yet it was this complete
Brute when you looked at it, dizzily from atop
Its bridges. I reached the far side of the bridge
And headed along into the main street, and just
Then there were two flashy cars that sped by me.
As in – glitzy sports cars – and they were
Racing against each other. And one of them cracked
Into the back of the other’s boot, because the
Other had ‘won the race’ and sped past him.
Their tyres ripped rubbery snarls on the road
And there was a big dent in the forerunner’s boot.
It was basically a car crash. And it happened
About ten yards away from me, right there on
The sidewalk. But, nothing else happened either
Than that both vehicles went tearing across
London Bridge to continue their race.
I walked on and I went into a supermarket
To buy some beers ahead of seeing my friend.
Everything I saw around the shop was about
A third higher than I was used to in Edinburgh.
But I got the beers and then I walked through
The night (this was in November, 2018) of
London, along to my friend’s flat, through the
Odd mix of buildings that seemed to spar for
Space between the jostling traffic. As you
Walked you heard all kinds of languages,
And the people you passed wore a medley
Of outfits; some in suits and leather shoes,
Some in dresses and high heels, some in
Tracksuits and trainers; and all of different
Skin colours and height and weight and
Character. Nine million people crammed
Into a relatively small space, and this is
The sparky mix that you get as a result.
My friend had finished his work at 5 p.m.
And that was why I’d been wandering
About all day instead of meeting up with him
Earlier. He lived in a range of flats that
Were hard to navigate around, and in
The immediate skyline I could see the
Shard skyscraper, blinking in blue and red
Dots. I finally found my friend and we
Hugged in the doorway. He was from
California, and I’d met him years back
At university. We talked into the night,
And then went to a local bar, which
Was super expensive but it was also
Thrilling to be out in the metropolis in
The proper black night; it was sublime
To be here in Londinium, even though
It was scary, berserk and conglomerate, too.

The Brampton Hut Murder
Janice Carol Weston, unsolved murder
Solicitor, Janice Weston was found dead in a ditch by a lay-by on the A1 in between Brampton and Brockden, Cambridgeshire on 11 September 1983.
36-year-old solicitor, JaniceWeston’s body was found at 9 am on a Sunday, in a ditch on the northbound carriageway of the A1 about half a mile south of the Brampton Hut roundabout by a cyclist. She had been beaten to death by several vicious blows to the head using a car jack which was found discarded close by.
A detective said that he believed that the killer had possibly lost his temper during an argument and had gone berserk. She was found fully clothed, with no sign of sexual assault or robbery. A post-mortem examination revealed that she had fought against her attacker.
According to Janice’s husband, she had a bit of a habit of picking up hitchhikers when she was making a journey. although he had told her not to and in fact he thought she had stopped doing that.
Curiously Janice Weston had told her husband and her friends that despite her husband being abroad she intended to stay at home in London that weekend. She had spent Saturday in London shopping, getting a new spare wheel for her car and visiting her office at Lincolns Inn to catch up on some work during the afternoon. She was last seen alive at around 4.15 pm on Saturday 10th September 1983.
According to traffic reports and an approximate time that Janice left her home in Holland Park, London, she probably didn’t reach Huntingdonshire until after 9 pm on Saturday night. It seems likely that she was heading for her ‘Weekend retreat’, a country house in Clopton, Northamptonshire.
It is possible that detectives are linking the story of the tyre with the fact that forensics found oil beneath Janice Weston’s fingernails but I think it is more likely that she had changed the tyre in London and done something else, such as checking the oil in the Brampton Hut Layby.
I do not see that a killer is going to kill a woman with a carjack, discard the jack but not the wheel and then drive her stolen car to Camden, London then dispose of the wheel. I really feel that is an error in the investigation.
Janice's husband was arrested after the body was identified, he was held for 55 hours and questioned at length but he was released without charge. It had taken three days to identify the body due to her having been so severely beaten. Hence Tony Weston had returned to England before his wife was identified so police had no idea that he was in fact in France at the time of his wife’s murder.
I personally see a number of faults and failings in this case and the way in which it was handled, hence I am sitting here almost forty years on from the killing, reporting that the case remains unsolved.

Over the years I have owned some crap cars. I remember a little Nissan Cherry, it wasn't actually mine, my dad bought it as a second car, but it was that clapped out that my mam wouldn't travel in it, so I sort of got left to use it at will. It ended up being in a 6 car pile up near the Metro Centre in the North East, so that was that. Gradually over time, as business got better I ended up with a Jaguar X-type estate. I loved that car, but Ian, one of our event managers blew the engine up when I lent him it to go to London to see his girlfriend. Funnily enough he also blew the engine up in our mini camper van, and one of the London taxi cabs. Dream Car Over the years I always had a hankering for a Maserati Quattroporte. I think it is one of the most beautiful saloon cars ever made. The fact that it is a true four door 5 seater makes it an ideal family car, and the 440HP engine, limited slip diff and active suspension means it can hold its head up with many a performance car. Eventually my wife got sick of me nagging about wanting one, and I convinced her we could also hire it out as a wedding car, so eventually she gave in and we acquired a gun metal grey version with black and cream leather interior. It was the executive version, with massaging, heated, cooled rear seats that also reclined. A nice touch, but to be honest one I never took advantage of as I always drove. Maserati Quattroporte I owned that car for three years and loved it as much at the end of them as I did at the beginning. Now, my wife isn't one to swap a car in that is running OK, so imagine my surprise when she announced one day, "I think you should go and look for a new Maserati". I was worried she had suffered an unnoticed anurism or was having a breakdown but she seemed fine. Looking back I had just received my pilots licence, so I think now, it was me mentioning I fancied a share in a small Cessna aeroplane, that got her thinking once I swapped my car in, it was an excuse to put me off an aeroplane for a few years. Quattroporte 2 I ended up speccing the new model Quattroporte in Nero black with full black leather interior. It seemed a good idea at the time. The colour is absolutely fabulous, deep black, with large flecks of colour. When the sun hits it, it looks sublime. Unfortunately you would need to be cleaning it 24/7 to keep it looking that way. I have spent hours washing and polishing it to a gleam. Withing 30 seconds of hitting the road it looks like its been neglected for months. For anyone thinking of buying their dream car all I can say is do it. Mine is totally impractical. I have had it as low as 3 m.p.g. on twisty roads with my foot down. Heck it will pass anything on the road except a fuel station. Things like tyres and consumables are an arm and a leg. And last about half as long as any other car I have owned. It is so big it doesn't fit in parking bays. My wife hates it. But I don't care, once I get in, fire it up and push the sports mode button, the engine roars. Sounding like a symphony of angels, floor the accelerator and it pushes you back in your seat, and all is right with the world. Maserati Quattroporte Wiki Read the full article

OMS Door to Door Challenge – departure date minus 4 weeks
Food Food Glorious Food
I’ve been worrying about nutrition this week. Before I met Ian, he cycled from London to Holcombe Rogus (which certain other individuals from the village) in one day. Up at 4am, they stopped at Basingstoke for a full breakfast, pub lunch and then celebrated their finish with some champers. Ian is 12 years older now and pub lunches, full breakfasts and champers at the end of each day just won’t cut it. I can see him heaving himself onto the bike by day 10.
So this week, in addition ot sorting out the first aid kit, giving some thought to theming the blog for the challenge and planning the start and finish, Ian and I sat down and had a long talk about NUTRITION.
He’s done his research by looking at British Cycling which has a very useful nutrition section for professional cyclists. Here I have tried to summarise what he told me.
Breakfast should ideally be eaten 90 – 120 minutes before he starts to cycle. But we could go with 60 minutes before, if he is planning to cycle at an easy pace. It should be a carbohydrate focussed meal, with things like porridge, oats or muesli.
During the ride, he needs to take:
2 gels
2 energy bars
3 mini pitta bread with nut butter or 2 brioche & jam.
So it seems to be to be topping up on carbs and fats, so he could also stop at a café instead of the snacks.
Liquids
He also needs to drink 2-3 litires of water per day. And talking of water, if he waits until he is thirsty to drink, it is too late. He needs to be thinking ahead for 20 miles down the road, so little and often right from the start is the way. Something like 2-3 gulps every 15 minutes. I wonder whether he needs a reminder on this bike computer if that is possible.
He should also drink 500ml of electrolyte drink during the ride to replace minerals etc. But at that quantity he will need some electrolyte tablets instead.
Lunchtime
On Ian’s longer rides, we hope to meet somewhere for lunch, whether that is eating in a café or just eating our sandwiches together with the motorhome parked up somewhere. Lunch for Ian is ideally a wholemeal sandwich with some protein like tuna.
Half-time
At the halfway mark no orange segments, like at school. On days when he is cycling for five hours or more he will need to have an extra 20g of protein, which will be in the form of a bar.
Arrival / tea-time
When Ian finishes his usual cycle rides he likes salted nuts and a beer. I thought the salted nuts were important to replace lost salts, but apparently it’s just because he likes salted nuts! And beer! So the recommendation is UNSALTED nuts and seeds and or a banana. Ian is insisting on keeping the cold beer in.
Dinner
The website says “don’t use the ride as an excuse for a full on blow out”. Otherwise, he might have one of those on his tyres the following day. Instead go for something nutritious like oily fish, broccoli and spiced potatoes or pasta.
Foods that are slow-release proteins such as hemp protein, houmous, nut butters and cottage cheese (not sure I can get that in France, although you can buy all things yoghurt). And finally, foods that are known for reducing inflammation are good, such as turmeric, ginger and garlic as are foods high in flavonoids such as berries.
And that’s it.
Have you spotted the big problem?
There is no recommendation of red wine, tasty French cheese, baguette or croissants let along duck.
